Talking head, usually it is just me so locking focus and setting everything up is easier than constantly moving and changing stuff by myself. When I have tried other styles and I ask them questions it distracts them or me so I did not hear what they said. Can we get a interview challenge?
@@markbone 1-5 minutes, using at least one style, include a behind the scenes photo / video and throw in a music, b-roll, particular shot or question requirement for entry.
Mark - came back to see this gem. It is so powerful and such a great asset to anyone filming interviews. Thanks for being such an amazing person in this space.
My journalism and filmmaking masters has been off since March due to Covid. I’ve learned so much more from your videos than the course these last few months so thank you man, it’s been really helpful!
I love the point about boundaries helping you to be more creative. Total freedom can actually be paralyzing. A few boundaries can really force you to think differently and create a better end product. Thanks for the awesome tips. 👍
Soon I'm going to have the biggest project of my life - a documentary about a professional basketball player, about his life and legacy. This could make me. Excited, scared, full of confidence and doubt. But the only way of forward. You inspire me, with your advice, tips and knowledge. Thank you Mark
We love active and in the moment interviews because they convey the emotion a scene so effectively! It's such a huge part of some styles of filmmaking that we love so much on UA-cam, like vlogs! Great videos as always Mark, you're always so informative and helpful
Great stuff as always. No camera or lens will ever give you what local knowledge and experience can give you. Its techniques like these that make it irrelevant what gear you are using as long as the story is captivating and the audio is good.
I like your style of teaching. Thank you ! I wanna make vlogumentaries, navigating my daily life during chaotic times. Left eye the rapper has a documentary and she did an in the moment passive interview with herself that is perfect for the confessional mtv y2k style I’m going for.
Very nice choice of video topic, breaking down documentary filmmaking into digestible styles of approaches, each with their pros & cons and the thinking behind when to use them. Learned a lot!
Thanks for the advice. I have a couple interviews where I just let them ramble and now I'm challenged to pull out the right material. I'll go in with a plan and a set of questions next time!
Love your insight. Love your work. Love everything you’re making on UA-cam. Super helpful to beginner filmmakers who want to do docs or short films, not just UA-cam content. So thankful for these videos!
Mark, I will pay good money for your documentary course once it’s complete. I love that you have such a balance of gear vs craft. Way to many youtubers out there talking about the “new fancy whatever” and your over here talking about technique and style. Love it bro keep it up!
Thanks for the informative video. I'm just starting out my adventure channel. Although most of my videos will be adventure related, I also want to feature others who are 'known' in the sport. These techniques will help me introduce guests to the viewers in a more in-depth way than having them just show up for the episode. Thanks!
Wow Mark I just got spine tingles!! I have been loving your videos since I discovered them about a week ago.... And here I am watching this one and I saw Cole in there! I knew him and was lucky to go to Haiti with him to shoot some drone stuff a few years ago. RIP to one of the most amazing people I ever met. If you ever need anything in Dominican Republic get in touch. Keep up the good work brother
Thanks man! Cole was my best friend, very sad to see him leave too early. So glad you got to know him! I hope to get back to DR sooner than later. I made a film about the DR rescatethefilm.com if you want to check it
@@markbone dude I actually sought it out this morning after you kept referring to it and I was super intrigued to watch it. I absolutely loved it, and I didn't even know that story even though I live in DR! Fantastic work, and funny to see Genesis' name in the credits too! Yep Cole was a special one. Not fair how the world works. Bless him. Anyway I'm bingeing your vids and learning a lot about what I really want to try and master - storytelling. Thanks for all the content.
Great stuff! Really excited for that course. I feel like most people who put our courses like that, haven’t ever made good docs - and you have. You’ve made some of my favorite.
Nice video Mark. Thanks for taking the time to break this down. I like to use an interview technique which is probably somewhere between In The Moment Passive and Active where I get the person to carry out a task or activity relevant to what they do and the story and then i get them to talk about stuff whilst doing it. Not necessarily about what they’re doing but usually about bigger ideas that motivate them or reflecting on something in their life. So it’s probably a talking head but in the style of In the Moment. Keep making your great content
"in the moment active" for me is the most challenging because of the surrounding sounds.. getting the best audio in an active situation is the challenge.... So I tend to go with Talking Head....
2:31 - In the Moment Passive 4:28 - In the Moment Active 6:34 - Talking Head 9:19 - Voiceover Super helpful and informational as always. I love showing folks these different styles and the reasons why, and how that can open up so many more options and creativity to a doc.
Excellent video. Would love to see how you set up the floating talking head. Is it a two camera set up where one camera is locked and the other you are handheld getting shots of the subject that move you? Thanks
I'm starting to film interviews for a documentary I'm making at the start of June and this is just what I needed. Really inspired by the look of the interviews you did for Mercedes. Thanks Mark !
Thank you for these videos Mark! Super informative and concise! I've been using them to establish the angle and style I will use in my degree thesis project. I am an audio engineering student and traditionally most in my position would just record their own music or another band. I don't have any interest in doing this so I decided to created a short film. I have practically no experience in film but figured it would be a great learning experience. I am excited to see how it comes together!
This is awesome information! I just posted my second short form documentary, and It's so nice to hear these things laid out which I've never done. Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed this! Would definitely be interested about the documentary course.
Mark Bone thank for sharing this information. I’m definitely waiting for your full package course on how to shot a documentary. The Last Dance by Micheal Jordan was truly an amazing documentary. what makes it epic was that they had a lot of B-roll footage and I like how they take you back and forth to what happened.
Well Mark,am so thankful for these tips since its by coincidence that I will be doing an interview & also a promo vid on Tuesday and it will be my first & am so scared or I don't know what I'm feeling😂😂,but am hoping for the best.Thank you so much once again Mark.
@Mark Bone Great content Mark! Can u make a more detailed video about shooting "floating talking heads"? I usually shoot with a tripod, but I like to get more movement i my shots. But i worry a bit about moving the camera under the interview, for an example bc what if u are out of focus when the interviewee says something great...
Hey Mark, Great video brother. I went to film school and got my Masters Degree in Documentary film. You really nailed most of the key elements of Doc film making. I have just started a video production company here in the west coast of Canada. I am really struggling to get any clients or business shooting commercials. I was wondering if you had some time to help me with some advise on how I can better do things. I really need this to work. I am 65 and I have no family or other income so it is a do or die literally. Thanks brother God bless✝

Cinema verite
Its stuff like this that's hard to find on UA-cam. Most channels are about gear and capitalism. You help people tell a story.
Thanks mate!
Agree, this is so much more valuable than another gear review or b roll tips
Yeah true
Totally agree! The most important tool in every craft is knowledge
Mark Bone, you might just be one of the GOATs
I wish!!
