Yes it can be a nerve wrecking process dividing tubers but it is such a rewarding process. You will have more dahlias than you know what to do with Roxanna!
Im in zone 6 as well. I dug some of my tubers and left some. The thing about leaving them in the ground in our zone is moisture and the tubers then rot. If you have them in a fairly dry spot. They should be fine.
You can do it. I’m new to dahlias . Watched many how to divide videos over the years. Last winter I took a deep breath, rolled up my sleeves and from one medium bunch got 7 plants! Fine pointed pruners/scissors make it easier.
I watched you put them to bed. It was such a lot of care to save them for spring. I’m sorry they didn’t survive. That is such a bummer. I want to have a heated greenhouse for this purpose. Temp will be kept above 45 F. That is my goal.
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. That's so sad. Its been freezing here in SE michigan too, sustained mid to low 20s. I love dahlias, but im always scared to tey & store them.
😢so sorry - I understand the feeling because I tried for years saving canna bulbs but it never worked for me. I followed your instructions and saved canna seeds. I am looking forward to your instructions to start the canna seeds. I hope the tubers grow🤞
I save my cannas by leaving them with dirt on in container in my dark storage. I have never lost any by doing that. I dont rinse them off. I think it is the dry dirt plus the cooler temperatures and dark that make them go dormant. I pull them out in the spring and put them in moist dirt and in warmth and they start growing again. Takes at least a month to really get going
My mother has so much luck saving cannas and dahlias, she does have a garage that is unheated BUT she has a heater there on and off that helps with the temps because she uses that garage for storage mostly, that women just dug out her dahlias, dirt and all and put them in a brown paper bag and left them on the floor, she had 100% success last year, I often feel like the more I baby things the less sucess I have lol
Hi Roxanna. Growing them in corten steel planters?. You clear them out at the end of the season. Wrap the steel in bubblewrap and/or moving blankets for warmth. A hoop hose so you can drape plastic to keep rain and melting snow out. Happy 2025 Gardening 👩🌾 👨🏻🌾 all🌱!
Another shelving unit! If Amazon ever delivers my lights I will get that done asap, I am doing a seedling sale in the Spring so I need the extra space.
Hi there! I have been a long time follow of your channel and really appreciate all you share! I love dahlias and I always have extras. I would be more than happy to send you 20 plus tubers in the spring if you need some. Just let me know!
You are so kind! And I truly appreciate it! I made a couple of orders to soften the loss, and I should be ok. The last thing I want is take tubers that you could use or sell.
Ugh! That’s what I’m worried about. I have no place to store them except the outdoor root cellar and las I checked it was just above 32F. The temp fob I have doesn’t always register and wish it did because I could set the alarm. No huge loss here as it will be their 3rd year and I grew from seed. However, I have glads and cannas. I just may not do bulbs after this if they don’t make it.
It's so discouraging, I am highly considering asking the hubby about building me a closet-size cooler, not sure I have the budget for it but something super small enough for my tubers in the winter.
@SoilandMargaritas that's true, but that's the fun part for me. I hope to purchase some seed from Floret for this summer. Their seed has a more consistent color palette I think.
I live in zone 9a Florida and it’s going to be 33° tonight. It’s still not freezing, but let’s see what that does to some of my perennials I put two zinnias and one Cosmo transplant out just to see if they get damaged. I have to learn how to take chances to see what works and what doesn’t works. If not, I’ll never learn.
Yes they will, provided they get plenty of time to grow. I start dahlia seeds about 6 weeks before my last frost and you can dig the plants after you had your first frost.
We get 14 f / -10 c plus and I never dig up my dahlias. For the last 4 years they have done fine. I’m not sure in honesty why people dig them up unless they get seriously cold, I’d end up damaging them with my spade! 😂
@@AmsNl2BcnEs oh, yes you should be able to leave them in ground. We need to dig them in Z5a. The last 2 winters were warm and I was going to mulch them heavily and see if they would make it, but this polar vortex is bringing it this year. Lol, I’m pretty good at finding bulbs with spade also.
Our average here is -10F to 0F (-23C to -17C) but we do get lots of snow and rain in between which I think is a huge problem for dahlias in the ground, I have tried leaving them in 2 different spots and nothing has come back for me, just not doable.
If someone would make a bulb chiller or a fridge that is slightly warmer and can be used to store tubers and bulbs, but is not a fridge? I would buy it. I left my tubers in the ground and am following Sarah Raven's "just add more mulch" plan. It worked last year, so fingers crossed. Ooh! Check out Fleur Farm. I got some of their ranunculus and anemone corms to start way early to have ready for pots, and they are super healthy, big plants. I'm going to order a few Dahlias and a few more ranunculus. The ranunculus are very specialty, but I like that this place sells single tubers for Dahlias.
Yikes! I'm sorry some of your tubers. I keep mine in an unheated garage and so far have not had a problem. Do you put them in peat moss or some similar medium? Hmmm. Well at least you have some left and now you have a good excuse to buy more LOL;)
@@SoilandMargaritasI think it depends on the garage-is it attached, insulated? Our last place had such a garage and the water lilies didn’t even freeze and it wasn’t heated-miss that.

I sure hope so!
Sorry to hear that some of your plans died out, but at least you have some of the ones you truly love
I do! Thank you!

I have tried leaving them in the ground, on different occasions, I think the snow (moisture) does not help definitely.
I’m so scared to divide my bunches of tubers! But you make it look easy, so I’ll definitely give it a try ❤
Do it! I’ll be cheering you from here!

I'm here from Hooked & Rooted. Congrats on making the top onimental gardening channels on UA-cam. I look forward to watching your content.
Awesome! Thank you!
So sorry this happened to you. Dahlias are so expensive and yours are always so lovely. I’m sure your props will work out.
I sure hope so! 🙏
I love Dahlias, wonderful how you showed how to divide the tubers!! You make it easy🌸happy Wednesday💚💚
Happy Wednesday!
Those tubers look good so I am hopeful you will get good results! Fingers crossed. 🍀

I never thought about having a greenhouse because I just don’t “need” one, but if I could keep it between 40/50 I could just fill it with tubers
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. That's so sad. Its been freezing here in SE michigan too, sustained mid to low 20s. I love dahlias, but im always scared to tey & store them.

GREAT tips! I might try to grow some in corten steel planters this year!
I have extra tubers. When I pull them out in the spring, I can send you some. Are you looking for particular varieties or colors?
I believe I just replied to your email Amy, you are awesome!
I see your new white backdrop behind you. What are your new plans? I know you must have ideas.

I don’t have a place to store tubers so I grow them from seed. It’s so much easier and you can save your own seed.
Thank you! The hard part about starting from seed is that you can't really tell which type/color of dahlia you will get.

Exactly! Every year I learn more and more in my own garden, these things that happened while sad, they teach me something.
If you start a Dahlia from seed , will it form a tuber?
Yes they will, provided they get plenty of time to grow. I start dahlia seeds about 6 weeks before my last frost and you can dig the plants after you had your first frost.
Good video. Can I suggest giving temperatures in Celsius for your international viewers?
Oh yes, sorry about that. I normally do that, next videos for sure.
