This was a great pile of basic advice. We gardeners can get all caught up in our dreams for our garden that we sometimes need to be taken down to earth and be prepared for the pitfalls of maintenance and costs and climate. Great video.
You are such a wealth of knowledge and I greatly appreciate your analysis. I can only imagine the hours of work that goes into visiting gardens, compiling photos, interviews and research and then providing us curated content that's both accessible and thought-provoking. I'm ever so grateful! Best wishes from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. If you ever visit, I'd be delighted to show you some of our most stunning gardens.
Your vlog is perfect timing for us as we have recently moved house so we have a new garden to work with. Ive loved your channel for ages and constanlu find them helpful. Be well and be safe xx
Funnily enough, that was just what I was thinking when I put this video together. I'm not sure if I have enough good examples, but if I do, then that will definitely be on the list!
I love your videos, they're so helpful! I'm a new homeowner with a tiny suburban garden of my own for the first time, and I'm dying to bring some cottagey lovelyness to it this summer
The time to start is now! Assuming the ground isn't frozen... I've removed 3000 square feet of grass over the past couple months and I'm planting this weekend! 🎉
Thank you so much for this inspirational video! I’m especially grateful for the practical advice. Onwards with the measuring 😊 and let’s see if this is the year I really get to grips with my garden.
Good morning Alexandra, to nice to see you. Have not seen you for a while, perhaps you or myself have just been too busy. It so lovely listening to your garden advice, and it makes perfect sense. The gardens that you showed are quite stunning. I so enjoyed watching to see what those gardeners did, the ideas worked perfectly. At times we wish to change but the ideas do not work in our space. Fortunately, you can get the vibe that something is out of place. Then just stop what you are busy with, step back and take a good look to see if what you planned is going to be practical and complimentary. We have had a terrible start to the summer season, it was so hot and just horrible. The heat was lovely but we had no rain. It started to rain in moderation in our area, many a storm passed by and missed us completely. Presently there is just drizzle most days, but totally clouded over. Our major dam has been under much concern as it was just 34% full, way too dangerous to supply water for the whole of the Gauteng area. Hopefully rain will fall in desired areas which will channel water into this dam. Looking good, wishing you many blessings and all the best for this year 2025. I have a good feeling about this year, hopefully we will all stay positive and carry on regardless. Kind regards, Elize.
In UK you have a great sense of garden. You are unique and inimitable. Here in Sicily we have a nice weather all the year, but our private gardens are so squalid. Thanks Alexandra you're so inspiring 😊
Good common sense and some really brilliant ideas. The chunky wooden pergola with seating in the middle of the long border caught my eye. Nice video, Alexandra.
I have ponds in NE Florida. For stagnant ones I use BT granules or dunks (they look like little donuts). They stop mosquito larvae from maturing to adult mosquitoes and they don't impact other wildlife.
All great ideas. The one I have used is paint - using one color on all the garden structures truly does pull a garden together. Multipurpose to garden areas is also essential. Even in a larger space, if you group things for activities, it make your garden more manageable.
Another excellent video, Alexandra! You have kindly pointed out the downsides of some garden choices in a specific and very helpful manner. So much of gardening is trial and error, and thank you for remembering those of us in drought prone areas. No measurable rain here in Southern CA since the early summer. One key to watering in raised beds is to start deep watering plants as they grow, so the roots go deeper. I use a lot of larger containers for things like shrubs or trees (and even my tomato plants, which still have tomatoes), and then layer smaller pots with flowers or herbs (away from the trunk) around the rim of the pot. The larger plant shades the small pots, and any excess water from the small pots is used by the large one. Drip watering is not practical for my set up, and I normally check the smaller containers more often and top off by hand with recycled/or rain water. Happy New Year!
I have just come inside after two hours in the garden tidying and clearing as we finally have had some Sun! This Video was perfect regarding ideas for the coming year. Of course it may rain tomorrow! but.....planning the months ahead for the garden is always very exciting. Thanks for the tips and as always.... very useful.
I'm moving into new house next week. The " garden " is basically a concrete yard 😱😱, I truly hate it! Ideally I'd like the concrete removed, not sure how expensive that would be to pay someone to do it. Can maybe have a go myself 🤔. I don't want a container garden . I do want a pond. I'm hoping to get some advice and inspiration here 😅
I think you would have to pay someone to remove the concrete but I don't think you would regret it! Or you might just remove the concrete from some areas. If you're strong and good with pickaxe you could try yourself but you could hurt yourself. You may have to buy some new topsoil once the concrete is removed, but it should all return to health fairly soon. There's quite a bit about removing concrete from a garden online. Once it's gone, you'll be able to have whatever kind of garden you want.

Thank you and good luck with the new garden.
Great examples. Terrific photography.
Thank you!
Brilliant Alexandra, maybe you would do a video on paint colour in the garden, suggested tints and tones. Thank you.
Yes please Alexandra, I would find this very helpful too 🎨

Thank you, I took December 'off' as it's not a very garden-y time of year in the UK. But it's nice to be back.

Thanks Alexandra you're so inspiring 😊

That was another of Paul Bangay's borders - his garden is really rather spectacular
Happy New Year and happy gardening Alexandra. Great video as always. 💚

Thank you! Our garden is frozen solid so I haven't had to do any clearing!
You are a wealth of information. I love your videos and your accent
Thank you so much!
Happy New Year Alexandra! Hope you are staying warm in this cold weather!
It's cosy indoors! And thank you!
I've missed your uploads soooo much!!!!!! Yaaaaaaay can't wait to watch this one
Thank you! I took a break in December because it's the least 'gardeny' time of year and also I got a hideous cough/cold/flu bug.
@TheMiddlesizedGarden I hope you've recovered and you're feeling better ☺️
A very inspirational Video. Thank you Alexandra🙏🏼. Respect for your work 💐

Love your videos. Thanks.
You are so welcome!
Useful! I don't like lawns. I'd dig up the lawn to grow more flowers!
Thank you.
