Cizzle: a killer Casio CZ-style voice from ALM / Busy Circuits

- Cizzle is a Eurorack synth voice from ALM Busy Circuits based around Phase Distortion synthesis, which Casio pioneered in their CZ series back in the 1980s.
It contains two digital oscillators that would typically be combined and used as one voice, but you can also use them independently. Each oscillator can produce four-note chords and has its own VCA, so all you need is an envelope or two to start using this as a complete voice.

Wow, a great video and loving that Ring mod electro synth section - a touch of Seinfeld bass and so funky! Nicely done Tom (and the ALM team, of course!)
Thanks Robin, appreciate that!
A polyphonic digital complex VCO is a strong, strong proposition.
The music in this video is ludicrous. So good!
Every time I watch one of your videos the module goes straight into my Modular Grid rack. 🙏
Dope sounds 🎉 well done !
Wow, I really love what you do! Very inspiring.
Love your videos, and was thrilled to see you'd made one for this module when I saw it new on modulargrid!
Fantastic review Tom! Definitely on my wish list now.
amazing patches!! love the wide range of sounds you can get with that rack
Great video. Thanks.
That’s a pretty sweet module, great demo
Fascinating module, great explanation, rockin' tunes!
Amazing module. Great video! Thanks.
Wow. Super nice sounds. And even better patching. Nice!
Great stuff!
Nice vid Tom!
best explanation of phase distortion synthesis ive seen, thank u
the Two Separate Voice patch sounds really good
Instant vibe with me - seems like a Lone machine! (like much of ALM's stuff, honestly)
This thing is especially well laid-out in such a tight package, to boot. 🎯
Very good decision from ALM that they gave the module to your hands to demonstrate it, awesome cool done 👏😃
Deep house chords beat is beeaauuutiful
killer is right.....great work 👏
ALM slaying these days.
Love this new ALM module. ALM rock. Still one of my fav companies. Great vid again Tom. Trying so hard to stop buying, this is not helping lol!
Just sounds so lush.
This looks very interesting. I have a Make Noise Telharmonic. Kind of makes me think if it, although this looks like it’s less enigmatic and easier to get your head around.
I must not get another oscillator.
I must not get another oscillator.
I must get another oscillator.
This is a lovely little case too.
Looking forward to add this to my arsenal. In the between I’ve got the VCV version🤛
You certainly know how to sell a module. Does indeed sound like a Casio CZ with added bonus of being able to modulate.
Module seems really cool, tight package for a dual osc. Also Mega-Tang, I missed that, seems awesome
Yeah, Mega-Tang has always been one of those final stereo mixdown hubs I've always admired & wanted, but never justified the space (even though getting similar functionality elsewhere would be difficult without exceeding its HP...).
Just wish they'd come out with a slim expander for CV over the Panning, and to bump that mono-send into stereo!
Cheers! Yeah, Mega Tang is great - pairs perfectly with MFX and is an all-round great small mixer for a modular 👍
Great video Tom, some cool sounding examples! Unless I missed it, you didn't mention that it's also available in VCV Rack. It's not free, but 15 $USD which is just over a tenner in the UK. Worth a try for the cost of a few pints and being digital it sounds exactly the same as the hardware. Also, software purchases are much easier to hide from your other half 😂
I bought it yesterday and did a quick patch on my channel, if anyone wants to hear the virtual version. Cheers!
Great point! I didn’t actually know about the VCV version until I’d finished the vid. Just checked your patch though, sounds ace!
Holy flip mate; what an awesome module. My wallet won't like you making it so irresistible though..😮😊
Deep house chords patch is instant John tejada ❤
Well great. How do I make 16hp of space for this one?
Great video, and quite a unique module. Seems to be full of sonic potential.
Love your demos! Was just about to buy a Sofia after watching that demo and then saw this. They seem similar in that they both have multiple sound source outs, and both can sound filtery, syncy, wavefoldy without external modules. Is there one you think is better for unique bass sounds, and also for ambient drones? I’m planning to pair whichever I get with an Ryk Vectorwave (which incidentally is the only reason I’m not looking at Odessa).
Good question! There is some crossover sonically - I'd say the main differences are that Sofia is analogue and has a few more modulation options; but Cizzle has the chord/unison mode which might be more useful for ambient drones. Usual answer: get both! :)
Thanks for the reply! I was actually going to say I probably won’t use the chord mode much (didn’t like chord mode on Plaits either) but would definitely use the separate v/oct in. Don’t have space for both so will think on it a bit. Sofia from what I’ve heard sounds lovely. But Cizzle seems to have some incredible magic to it, especially for evolving arps. Tough choice made tougher by these awesome demos!
Great video! What did you use for drums in these demos?
Thanks! Drums are from Shakmat Battering Ram, various Tiptop Audio 808/909 modules plus a couple of samples from a Disting.
Lovely! Out of curiosity, what 6U case are you using? Perfect little size.
Thanks! This is the case: www.bitbybitsynths.com/shop/skiffy-642/
Hey super video ! What’s your euro rack case ? 🤔
Thanks! It’s this: www.bitbybitsynths.com/shop/skiffy-642/
@1:09 bangs so hard
@2:00 bangs even harder! damn! nice work.
I took a look at the manual, but it doesn't explain (clearly) how you control the chords get different types. Maybe you can clarify, since you have the module, how this works?
Thanks in advance.
You set the chord type with the knob or via the CV input. It’s similar to how Plaits works in chord mode. Not sure how else to explain it other than what I’ve done in the video already - is there something else you want to know?
Awesome sounds from the demo at the beginning. If you would have said to me "phase distortion osc" I would have been like, meh, but this video has piqued my interest.
