I was filming this when I was coming back to UA-cam after my surgery and I had just posted my update video on my beauty channel and quite frankly the comments got to me. I’m also dealing with a lot in my life and not handling it very well. I’ll update you about it all soon but here’s the attempted vlog lol

There’s something so satisfying about finishing a bunch of unfinished things. Not just books but tv shows, work, jobs you need to do etc. This video pleases my soul.
The things you are using as bookmarks. Love it. 😂. I have an “on hold” shelf and it’s way too large. I probably need to challenge myself to do this.

So sorry to hear you are going through a difficult time. UA-cam and social media in general can be very tough on you in a number of ways. Just remember that it's easy for others to sit back and criticize and we hear the one negative thing among the hundred positive. Keep strong ...we're here for you.
Honestly I'm doing really well considering but every time I post an update I have a few tough days lol
I dont know why sometimes Im really enyoing a book and I find it interesting and want to know how it continues and what happens in it but for some reason I dont read keep reading it

I love how real this vlog is. Sometimes I feel like people force themselves to read just for the number or rating. My pile of shame is looking at me from across the room right now. I really don't know why we put down books we enjoy. Hope you are doing better now. 😄🧡🧡🧡

Please take all the time you need to recover, try to ignore the mean comments (easier said than done, I realize), and know that you are loved by so many people!

Finally, someone else feels the way I do about long chapters. I thought I was the only one. Also, I don't watch reading vlogs that often because they aren't usually my jam but I watch almost all of yours because they are just really enjoyable to me and you are just so funny. I can't get enough.

i liked circe more than song of achilles. i want more from madeline miller though, she does mythology retellings incredibly well!

I agree with you about long chapters. I like to read from one chapter to the next then stop and if the chapter is long and i'm ready to stop it takes longer

And by the way, dont let the hate comments about the surgery drag you down, because you dont need to be a crowd pleaser, you make your own decisions.

My pile of shame is definitely out of hand. Life has been such a mess these last few weeks 😖, so I feel you. This year I have had 2 months in which I didn't read at all and that has never happened before. But then again there has been some great stuff happening too. So always keep your head up 🌞

I think I was mostly not prepared for that when I came back! I was super naive thinking people could not, not be supportive since it was a corrective surgery... I'm a dumb dumb haha

I am only 6:43 into this vlog but I wanted to tell you that it is so refreshing that you also have this problem. Over the weekend I had a mini “readathon” to finish a bunch of my unread books. I finished four and still have six in my pile of books I’m in the middle of.
Definitely inspired me... I had 6 books on my pile of shame all over a year old. have now finished 2 about to finish a third :)

I recently made a collection on my Kindle titled Operation Kindle Tidy Up! It is all the books I started but didn't go back to. I now need to find the courage to sit and read them! Thinking in 2020 I might set myself one book a month from the pile to finish to try and avoid putting myself in a slump.
I enjoyed both the book and movie for Practical Magic, but I definitely liked the movie a little more. I enjoyed her writing style, and the sequel was good as well!
This would be an excellent idea for a readathon I have a huge pile of shame I think a month long readathon hosted by you might get me to pick them up haha

My list of shame is several pages long, and I never seem to make any progress on it. But you have inspired me to renew my efforts! As soon as I finish my current read (Listening Woman by Tony Hillerman) I am going to pick Jade City back up and finish it.

I also like to sometimes have a physical copy of nonfiction books on hand while listening to the audiobook! So glad I’m not the only one, it makes me feel super extra. 😂

I've been having this same problem since the end of last year. I'm trying to get through the pile right now, so great timing for this vlog! I just finished One Word Kill finally. The others on my pile are: The Eye of the World, The Kiss of Deception, The Vanishing Season, Skyward, and The Calculating Stars.
The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes (yup, the author of Flowers For Algernon) has been on my shame pile for half a year now! I'm halfway and the book was so interesting (a non fiction about a man having dissociative personality disorder, he had 24 people living inside his head). For some reason I never continued, maybe because it was all very sad... but I might pick it up again after I finish Skyward, you inspired me 💪

The audiobook for 'The Rules of Magic' is outstanding!
This is actually a big problem of mine. I don't have any issues dnfing books either so idk why I do this to myself. Biggest issue is actually finishing series. I have so many series were I haven't read the last 1 or 2 books and it's not cause I don't like it! Off the top of my head is the Kate Daniels books by Ilona Andrews and a very recent one Darkdawn...Tbf at least I started DD? Lol. This has caused a bit of a slump though cause I feel like if I pick up another book then the chances of me actually finishing DD will be close to 0, so I end up not reading at all...
I loved this vlog and all your recent content from both channels! I admire you a lot for getting in front of the camera so soon after a major surgery. That work ethic is just damn impressive. So don't sweat it, just breathe, and remember that the most important step is always the next one ;)

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely fine is best as an audiobook! I thought it was pretty decent when I listened to it but I couldn't get through the physical book at all

But you need to read Kings of the Wyld. I think you’ll love it once they get to the adventuring part. I found the entire thing pretty funny, like dad joke funny. It’s a great found family and just being there for each other. Plus you see almost every mythical creature known to man in the story. 😂
Oh girl, I have the same pile. I have several books that I’m pretty sure are going to be 5-star reads but for whatever reason I’ve stopped them halfway through. Most are verrrrrry long books, which I think is why I stopped them. 11/22/63. Outlander. Game of Thrones. Just to name some of them on this list for me. I really need to finish them. 😬

I just stayed up until 3 am crying through the last 70ish pages of Song of Achilles 😭. I thought knowing what happens in the Iliad would prepare me but it just made it worse! I did put off finishing it, though, until I was in a lower stress place in my life, so I totally understand the struggle
As someone who had had a couple of surgeries, I know how much surgery messes with the brain and mood. You might just be experiencing the after effects of anesthesia and pain medication coupled with significant pain and change in your lifestyle. Hang in there Emily! "Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine" is AWESOME. Give your not-slymp situation a while, take a breath and when you feel like a medium-to-slow paced character diven novel,pick it up! You won't regret it.
I've just finished it but goodness I was not prepared! I felt like it needed 20 trigger warnings but I really really loved it.

@@user-iq9hh9gw2i I looked at what was on the cover and everything vaguely alluded to dealing with some intense stuff but not to the extent of what I would have expected. I honestly didn't look at it much on Goodreads. It kept popping up as recomended and thought it looked Interesting based on the blurb.
It’s one of my favourite books. I read the physical and the audiobook and the audio made me love it even more..
For pronunciation of most of the names in The Song of Achilles you should watch the Brad Pitt movie. I probably would have been pronouncing most of the names wrong if I hadn’t seen that version. Especially names like Briseis (Bri-say-iss).

Hmmm...Do you have any concerns about ultra violet rays hitting your books?? As you know , uv rays cause pages to turn yellow... PS: just looking the window behind you makes me nervous :)
I've been doing the same thing for the last few years, when I never used to give up on any book. I've stopped beating myself up about it as I realised that if a book truly grabbed me, I wouldn't have put it down. It's the author's fault, not mine... :D :D
There are many in my pile that I like just fine, but if I'm not feeling excited to read, they're too easy to put down and not pick up again, while I instead go for something that more perfectly suits the mood I'm in.
There are so many terrific books in the world, we will never get around to reading even a small percentage of them, so life's too short to painfully slog through a book that isn't fantastic. This is what I've decided anyway, so I refuse to call my pile of half-read books a Pile Of Shame. :D

@@BookswithEmilyFox And I liked being able to read it really quickly. I don't find the rockstar interesting at all so I read through his bits at more of a skim and I think that helped keep everything moving.
I did not like Song of Achilles or Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, so I totally understand.
I don't get why would someone consider Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine a ' super funny' book 🤔 that's what's on the cover and that's (partially) why I've bought this book. But it's so utterly sad and tragic and depressing I couldn't stomach it.

Man alive, how i hated Eleanor Olyphant Is Completely Fine by the end of it. ugh. predictable 'twist' and Eleanor drove me up the wall, across the ceiling and down the other side. it was definitely a 'finished this out of spite' read.
