The spine is NEVER "perfectly straight". A certain amount of flexion happens even when you don't visually see it. A lot of advanced lifters have a slightly rounded back. In fact, it gives more room for spinal extension to occur. As for "down in a controlled motion" - 1) he was literally demonstrating fast eccentrics to demonstrate what NOT to do 2) when he did show it properly, it WAS controlled. I don't know what on earth you were looking at. As far as the bar sliding on the shins...look a speed deadlift is with 30-40% of your max. It's not going to be locked in as much as a maximal lift.
