I actually just read the book. She was way more psychotic in the book. She actually cut his foot off, and did much more to him. Kathy Bates was incredible.
I remember in the book she had actually tied a strand of hair to each of the doorknobs in her house so she would know when he left
Same with how she dealt with the one police officer who came to ask some questions about Paul. New fear unlocked about riding lawnmowers.
Imo, one of the biggest differences between the book and the movie is how Annie presents herself at first. In the book, Paul IMMEDIATELY knows that Annie is up to no good and is afraid of her. But in the movie, Kathy Bates initially plays Annie as warm, friendly, and well-intentioned, albeit a bit of an oddball. Paul really does trust her before she shows her true colors. It's actually one of my favorite differences between the book and the movie; it makes it so much more frightening when Annie turns on Paul.
@@Silvermoon424 - It’s definitely a good narrative direction to take with the movie because it helps with making the audience feel more terrified as well. Personally though, I thought Paul was too foolish for not being more suspicious earlier on. He’s an incredibly superstitious writer who happened to be found by his “biggest fan”-being trusting doesn’t suit him, at least to me.

As someone born and raised in Colorado, I can tell you that to this day it wouldnt be unrealistic for a big storm to take everything down--including cell towers. This story was always extra scary to me becase the things she says in the intro are really easy to believe if you're familiar with small mountain towns, and the initial reveal really GOT ME
during the crash scene I flashed back to the 90s and how, even if no phone lines were down, you're basically cooked at that point. I wonder if having cell phones have saved more lives than they've taken in car accidents.
I read this book in 3rd grade for a book report and the teacher called my parents in for a conference 😂
😂😂 My dad being a King fan, would let me watch some of his films as a kid, including this one so calling in my parents would have been unproductive.
Now THATS hilarious!! 🤣🤣🤣I didn’t see the movie or read this book until I was much older, however I grew up watching Alfred Hitchcock Presents, so by the time I got into Stephen King, I had a different appreciation for this level of horror overall.

Kathy Bates was so chilling in this movie, and deserved her Oscar win, being one of the only performers to win for a horror film. James Caan was fantastic as Paul, making him likable, and had you rooting for him to escape Annie's clutches. Rest in peace, James Caan, you'll be forever missed. 😇✌🏾
Not to mention King called this his favorite adaptation of all time.

Kathy Bates is amazing as Annie.
The Just King Things podcast episode on Misery has a lot of great contextualization & insight into King not only projecting himself as the “popular author with stalkers” but how he feels about being labelled as a “genre” writer. One of the most interesting behind-the-scenes aspects of Misery to me is how it relates to how King has written women over time. He was actively trying to be better about it, but still so many of Annie’s character are intrinsically tied to negative stereotypes about women. She comes from King’s petty contempt as much as his valid fear.
I think Kathy Bates does an especially incredible job if you think about the role was given in those ways.

Fun fact Stephen King wrote has no memory of writing Misery because he had a serious coke addiction. Misery was his name for his drug the effects it had on him
Actually that’s Cujo he has no memory of. Misery was published about a year before he got sober, which is why the scenes where Paul gets more and more addicted to the pills Annie gives him.
The hobbling scene lives rent free in my head. Broken legs and ankles have been one of my worst fears ever since.

I wouldn’t say she made it “good”. But that’s one of the only Perry movies (maybe the only) where the cast had enough space and characterization to create some interest and tension.

I remember my older sister showed me this movie a few years ago. Funny thing is that I made a joke at the start about her breaking his legs with a sledgehammer. She went completely straight faced at the joke and I just sat there thinking what I said wasn't funny. Little did I know lmfao

Misery is pure gold! Fun fact, I remember reading somewhere that Stephen King said the hobbling/amputation scenes (in the book, Annie actually cuts off Paul's foot as well as his thumb) is an allegory for the writing process. When a writer has to cut scenes from a book they really like and worked hard on, it feels like cutting off pieces of themselves. Paul is forced to cut scenes from his new Misery novel that he enjoys because of Annie (who is kind of a stand-in for an editor) and then literally gets his limbs cut off.
(btw I don't think Stephen King was saying that the editing process is bad or anything, just that when you're a writer you can't help but take it personally)
The hobbleing scene was so intense that the first director quit. It was very hard on the actors and entire crew

I’m so glad you liked this movie!! It’s such a stone-cold classic, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like it because it’s just rock solid all around. Clear stakes, Annie is totally believable as an unhinged control freak, and Kathy Bates earned every inch of that statue and not to mention James Caan is so good as well
Gerald’s game is the one of the first horror movies in a while to truly touch upon my fears and my triggers. I watched it once and never again
Gerald's Game is definitely one of my very favourite Stephen King adaptations, I adore it. Misery is SO GOOD. First saw it when I was like 9-ish and I've loved it ever since

@@hannahbrown5465 Yeah, that's an essential part of her character so they can't really cut it. The story isn't so much about a woman trying to break out of handcuffs while chained to a bed as it is about a woman coming to terms with all that's happened in her life so she can break the chain of fear and shame she's been shackled with since childhood.
Definitely not a read or watch I would recommend if the subject matter isn't something you want to see.
This was a perfect post-idol palate cleanser about fame. I had intense fear of Kathy Bates for several years after watching this as a child.
Have you watched Castle Rock? The second season serves as a kind of prequel to Misery, and it fleshes out Annie. The actress that plays her is immaculate; she recreated the accent, mannerisms, and body language of Kathy Bates' performance so well that it was almost eerie! I'm pretty out of touch with pop culture so don't know how it was received, but I myself would highly recommend the show to fans of the movie

Same with me I got an entire bookshelf and a half of his novels. He’s way more than just a horror writer he doesn’t get enough credit sometimes. He’s done Fantasy, True Crime, Mystery, short story’s, post apocalyptic, spaghetti western, and even subliminal topics right under the surface like clever metaphors. Not to mention he was one of the first people to create a “Multiverse” in the entertainment space.

I'll be damned. Kennie's covering a movie I've heard of, and it's one of my favorites. This movie is just the epitome of cozy horror, and Annie Wilkes is such a fascinatingly complex villain. Though James Caan's performance as Paul Sheldon also shouldn't be overlooked; the guy nails the role of someone just trying to get through a terrifying situation that he has zero control over.
This feels like after care ,still have PTSD from The Idol. That shit was UGH
i remember watching this movie in late 2020 (it was suggested to me on hulu), i was so unsettled but it was a very good movie! kathy bates slayed with this role & deserved her oscar.

Kennie! A bad movie suggestion-Somebody Help Me (2007). It’s on Tubi. I remember watching this god-awful movie with my mom when I was around 5 years old.
It’s a horror movie starring Omarion, Minor Houston, etc.
The book is on a whole nother level, but the improvised hobbling scene was just as exhilarating.
Bad Movies & a Beat is always a hilarious treat but I would love if you did more Good Movies & a Glam! There are so many classic movies that I’d love to hear your commentary on.

I read the book first and it’s one of my favorites of his. I loved its exploration of writer’s block and feeling trapped in a box with your creativity because of expectations. I forget if this was a book thing or just from the movie but him stuffing the pages down her throat was always a fantastic scene to me, like he’s saying “damn here’s what you want, choke on it for all I care!!”
Gerald's Game was SO GOOD. It's still haunting me to this day.

I'm a die-hard S.K. fan (from age 13-present and I'm 49). My very first book of his was "Misery". Since most SK adaptations (and, sadly I do include "The Shining" here, for the same reasons the author himself didn't like it. Although it's a good movie on its own, it's not a great adaptation because it missed the mark on its main message. ANYHOW) are crap, I was so pleasantly surprised when this one came out. The kicker was that I had kind of pictured Cathy Bates in my head when I was reading the book, lol. This was the first big-screen adaptation that didn't disappoint me in some way (although let's take a second to recognize that they changed the amputation of his foot to just having it broken to pieces), and it gave me hope for future films to come.
I believe Stephen King is the last of the truly great writers, and I have read/watched every single one of his pieces, including the unfinished digital office plant story.

I haven't watched the movie but the book was sooooo good definitely the best Stephen King book I've read and the scariest book I've ever read too. Annie is even more intense and scary in the book, like before she succumbs to her injuries she was able to crawl all the way the the barn presumably to get a weapon to finish him off with

I don't even know how to describe the feeling I got from this movie when she broke his feet. Like only a few movies gave me that feeling, it's so distinct but I can't describe what the feeling is.
This movie was so good! I think it captured the feeling of fear anyone would get when they're stalked and kidnapped.

I'm not a horror movie person but during the holidays at college those of us who were stuck in the dorms decided to do a horror movie marathon, which I mostly avoided but cos I still wanted to hangout with my friends I stuck around for a couple of movies and after Gerald's game my friend couldn't sleep so we ended up sleeping in the communal living room together on the couches and I had a nightmare about a guy licking my foot at the end of the couch I was sleeping on and that's been the last time I've tried to be brave about horror movies.
So I wasn’t allowed to watch a lot of movies as a teen, especially horror. So I started a thing called Midnight Movie Hour, which was essentially watching Netflix secretly at night in my room on my much too small phone. And I would have to finish because I didn’t want it to show up on the Continue Watching section when my mom turned it on. I watched things like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Zodiac, Silence of the Lambs, and so many others.
This was one of those movies and I went in completely blind. The horror of watching this in a completely dark room.I was horrified by the hobbling, this was the only movie that I’ve stopped and contemplated quitting before reluctantly going back for. I’m glad I finished because it’s still one of my favorite movies.

The one thing I miss from the novel was the actual Misery chapter.
The novel open each chapter with an excerpt from the Misery book he is writing for Annie.
And the crazy thing is... it sounds like GREAT. I wanted to read that novel!
The chapters keep getting darker and darker, and the characters more complex.
By the end, Paul Sheldon is eating with his editor and confesses that, though he is annoyed that Annie Wilkes DID made him fell in love with writing the Misery novels again (he gets progressively more engaged with the writing), he admits that he had never written so well and that he feels he kinda owes one to Misery for saving his life.
It is then revealed that he faked that burning the manuscript for the Return of Misery by burning blank pages, saving the originals, which he publishes and is already working on the next one.
The irony that Annie ultimately got what she wanted was... kinda glorious!
I miss that, though I can't imagine how they could have intercalated The Return of Misery between the scenes.
Kennie have you ever seen the movie where the doctor dude kidnaps some woman he falls in love with and then cuts her to put her in a box so she can't leave him? "Boxing Helena" i believe. It's art.
So I think that the book is much scarier than the movie because in the book she’s much less whiny and bratty and just is much more cruel. But my favorite thing about the book is that he actually starts writing a second book in secret when he’s living with her because he realizes that it’s his best book and so basically because he was trapped in that situation, he ended up doing the best work he’s ever done. And I just think that that’s really really interesting and I wish that that I’ve been in the movie. I love Kathy Bates, but I don’t completely love how she plays this character. I feel like it comes across as a caricature rather than someone I should be scared of.
Misery is dramatic irony the movie. It's masterful.

I read the book when I was 10 years old. It used to be one of my favorites along with: "The Eyes of the Dragon" and "Dolores Claiborne." Stephen King used to be my favourite writer until I reached 16. His old stuff was proper. "Pet Sematary" was the first King adaptation I watched. Watched it at age 8 and was the reason I began reading his books. Oh, the memories of being precocious.... Lol!
