    I think I remember it being established early in the movie when Tess is talking with Keith about how she just can't leave her abusing pos boyfriend, even though she knows she should... I feel like that theme carries the rest of the movie and justifies her continuously putting herself in harms way to try and help these men, one of them being a literal pos.

    The writer for this movie was inspired to write it after reading a self-help book that included a chapter which warns women to *never* disregard their own gut instinct or to ignore red flags when it comes to men. The book itself was about tips to avoid having others commit violent acts against you. Cregger (the writer of this movie) wanted to create a movie that had a women facing/ignoring as many red flags as possible, which explains why Tess even stays in the house after realizing there's already a man staying there.

    I dont think that they were trying to say inbreeding gave "Titty" super-human strength, I think they were trying to show that kind of "mom strength" you've heard about like where a mother can supposedly lift a car off of their child or in other cases where their child is in danger. I think she was able to break through that wall and beat that man because she thought she was protecting her daughter (hence why she never did it before). Her whole character is "mom" so knows nothing else :(

    I am going to say as a black woman, I lived in an ancient house in the country as a teen. There were lots of secret passages and hidden hallways. In my room I had a built in vanity and underneath a whole that led to a locked door. I lived there for two years, I never opened the the door the entire time I lived there. I just stacked a bunch of giant framed paintings over it in hopes that if somebody lived in the walls they wouldn’t be able to just push the door open.

    A lot of y'all not understanding her motivation for going back are missing that is a part of her character (flaw). It is literally said in the beginning about her relationship with her on again off again boyfriend that she keeps going back and not knowing why hopefully this experience will finally break her of that habit.

    • @missingwalle9364
      @missingwalle9364 Рік тому +77

      I mean that would make sense tbh. But personally I felt like the story could have done a better job actually reinforcing this flaw, or just stuck with her as the audience's main conduit instead of jumping to AJ mostly. And I felt like we missed out on the catharsis for her character bc she doesn't get spared bc she learned from her flaws, it felt like it was just sheer luck she was the final girl. Which def happens, but within a narrative it feels a bit weaker.

    • @javk8673
      @javk8673 Рік тому +15

      @@missingwalle9364 well I think that depends by what you mean by reinforcing or reiterating because I feel like her continuing to go back is reenforcing that flaw. I do agree though that there could have been a better catharsis (or any really)at the end showing that this is something she now recognizes as a flaw and worked through but I can also see how just because it is a flaw in her doesn't mean the story is about her overcoming it. Every character choice doesn't necessarily need a resolution. I think that the thesis of the film about women having to be more vigilant in situations that a man can just waltz into/woman also being socialized to ignore their intuition could have been much tighter. I also agree that her being a final girl that survived through luck rather than determination/lesson learned is a missed opportunity. I think the film was trying to hard to juxtapose Mother and Justin Long (like who is the real monster) that it forgot that Tess was the main character. The film was trying to juggle too many themes/messages at once but overall I really liked the camp and fun and unpredictable nature of the story as a whole.

    • @missingwalle9364
      @missingwalle9364 Рік тому +10

      @@javk8673 oh i'm def with you on the fact that the movie felt unfocused on who we should follow bc if Tess was supposed to be it the film needed to be tighter with the perspective. It def felt like the movie was trying to juggle a whole lot at the same time and that's where my personal misgivings with the film is mainly. Otherwise this was a fun rollercoaster ride and the ppl u wanna see get their comeuppance gets it. Def wished the writing could be more focused

    As a horror movie fan, I loved it. It was refreshing because it wasn't a rehash, remake, sequel, or ripoff - and well-done at that. It committed to its premise and was a very suspenseful experience! Georgina Campbell was a fantastic lead. Definitely not perfect, & I was kinda hoping Tess and Keith would have a showdown at the end for fun but it's easily one of the best horror movies of the year. I think it was interesting how they contrasted the actor with the father as they are both predators; AJ thinks the father is a monster and obviously evil but he seems to be completely unaware, or in denial, of how he's cut from the same/a similar cloth. AJ also saw himself as a victim, which the movie gradually shows how he definitely isn't.

    My friends were really bothered by AJ’s use of the gay slur, and were worried about me as it’s not a word I enjoy hearing due to some stuff from my childhood. I actually thought it was appropriate though as it’s almost like a brick wall letting you know that this guy isn’t a good character after all. Directly after we are shocked by his use of the word, they cut to him basically admitting to assaulting the woman. So within a few seconds they establish this isn’t a good person and you shouldn’t trust or root for him. His actions later on prove he is irredeemable too, so that’s good. I was kind of worried they would make him out to be a hero despite being such a bad person.

      I think someone made a good point somewhere else in the thread that maybe Titty/Mother isn’t actually “superhuman”, but rather the adrenaline and intense feelings of motherhood that she’s been forced to have her entire life has made her do what seems superhuman. It reminds me of those stories of mothers moving cars to save their children in an accident, or protecting their kids and taking a gunshot and surviving. Titty isn’t actually superhuman, but her motherhood is the superpower. This also makes sense about the fact she only kills men in the movie and is obsessed with protecting Tessa.

    My mom and I arrived at an AirBnB once while in Mexico City (we were there visiting extended fam) and we checked into the AirBB and realized there was a man staying there as well, and we weren't informed of this during the booking. We were in our own room, but then realized there wasn't a door to the room. The man was peculiar, to say the least. He looked older, but seemed like he had had a lot of plastic surgery done and just carried himself in an off putting manner. I immediately got a bad feeling and asked my mom if we could leave because something felt off. When we started gathering our things to leave, he got frustrated and kept reassuring us he 'was a good guy' and there 'was no reason to worry'. I panicked even more, and my mom told me to get my stuff and immediately leave while she called the AirBB host and essentially fended the guy off because he was getting escalated. I am generally a very open person, I've stayed in giant hostel rooms with complete strangers before while solo traveling. But something about this man, every alert button was on. Every gut instinct was activated.
    All of this to say, if I was the main character of this movie I would have immediately called a cab back to the airport and slept there before my interview. FUCK staying over night in a random place with a stranger.

    In the beginning of the movie Tess was talking about how she has the tendency to return to bad situations. I took that as foreshadowing for all the times she goes back to help
    Also, what happened after AJ was reflecting on being (or not being) a good person, the movie is making abundantly it clear (to wrap up all the previous signs that he sucks) that AJ is not a good person, Tess by contrast is. She cares about others and actively shows this by trying to help them. Even when she killed the woman at the end the way Tess´ expression shows sympathy.
    I keep seeing people express derision towards Tess, saying that she is dumb and that her actions don’t make sense, but the movie explains why she does what she does.

    Some BG info about the making of this film that I really enjoyed, a la wiki: "Zach Cregger was inspired by the non-fiction book The Gift of Fear, citing a section that encourages women to trust their intuition and not ignore the subconscious red flags that arise in their day-to-day interactions with men. He sat down to write a single thirty-page scene that would incorporate as many of these red flags as possible. Cregger settled on a woman showing up to an Airbnb late at night, only to find that it had been double booked, as the ideal set-up for this exercise, with a rule about having to surprise the audience if he were surprising himself with the writing."
    Also, Zach has a cameo as the dude in the bar asking "did you do it bro??"

    I feel like we love it BC it’s camp. That’s why I liked it. It’s the only thing that makes dark horror movies bearable.

    You talk about whatever you like. I find it incredibly relatable to hear you mention your period as often as you do and how it affects you. Forcing yourself to hide pain for the comfort and convenience of others is bullsh*t.

    Finding out the writer/director was a member of WKUK somehow makes the plot make so much sense to me and I cannot explain myself further than that.

    Yeah when I watched it, I knew immediately that Keith was a red herring cause he was too obviously creepy. I wish it didn't jump around so much, I think it would have been better showing the old man at the start instead of doing a second hard cut to a flashback. If we knew the old man was a thing at the start it would bring up more like "is Keith or AJ related to him? are they working with him? Are they the children of the mama?" but having the random hard cuts in the middle of the movie brought it down for me. Also, the monster looking basically identical to the old lady monster in IT Chapter 2 really took me out of it. The best way I can describe the movie is "okay".

    I always love hearing how different people know/don’t know some of my favorite artists. Like when my husband knew Jack Nicholson from Anger Management and not The Shining or literally anything else, haha! But hearing Bill Skarsgård described as “discount” anything was crazy, and then “discount Evan Peters”?! Truly wild to me!
    Ps - loved the video, as always.
