- Hey Horse Lovers! This is an update video featuring Belle. She is my PREGNANT auction mare that's due in 2 MONTHS-MAY 2023. A few weeks ago I purchased her from an auction and well... we discovered she was pregnant about 4 weeks after purchasing her following a wellness exam! We were completely shocked but also very excited. This will be our first foal ever born at Free Spirit Farm. Here is a little background information: Belle is a 7 year old Dapple Grey, Percheron X who is just under 16.2hh. In this video you will get to see more of Belle's daily life at the farm and also tune into one of our training sessions. We will do some grooming, groundwork, and hang out at the farm. Both of you ladies looked so nice with the early spring Michigan sunshine! 💕 It’s such a great idea offering a course to help others learn. Belle is looking really good and responding so well to lunging sessions. I appreciate you constantly showing your consistency with training/techniques because we both know a horse will never trust its owner if they are unreliable. You make me smile every time because every stage of a horse’s education, you should always aim to improve and you nail it each time ending with positivity. Yes Belle is sensitive and you know more pressure isn’t always the answer. She’s beginning to understand your thoughts and words. Both of you are really starting to connect with your hearts, which is beautiful to see. You have the innate ability to open up your mind to think outside the box to make a situation better because you breathe to find your center to keep calmness. By keeping things natural you’re giving her the balance for her body and mind and foundation for confidence. Thank you for sharing these moments and I’m hoping future owners will share their stories with us 💕🌻

She’s definitely a horse you’ll have to spend some time on! And she’s so young! She's feeling frisky, that's good. It's a reflection of her health. Baby takes a lot of nutrients from its mom. She seems to be eating everything she needs to stay healthy & vibrant. Good job Shae!😊

“Controlled wandering” - I love that! I do that with mine, didn’t know that had a name! And I’m with you on letting them stop to poop. Sorry purists but it doesn’t translate to performance, they don’t stop during tests or whatever, and what the heck, a pile is easier to clean up. I think you’re right that Belle doesn’t seem to have a lot of life experience. My younger guy is much the same. Can’t wait to see the baby and then your life all together!

So excited to see Belle's little foal. If your vet hasn't mentioned it, get yourself some ph strips. If you put a little of her milk on the strip, you can get a close idea of when she'll foal. If the ph is 6.5, she'll foal within 48 hours. If it's 6.25, she'll foal in 24. This might help you get some sleep closer to foaling. 😊

I feel like your experience with Belle is like deja vu for me. 😅 I bought a young grey MFTx mare from an Amish family at auction here in CO back in 2006. We bought her in October, and later found out she was pregnant. She was super unsure of everything, and I really had to work to gain her trust. Despite that though, she tried hard and was willing to do what I asked. I feel like when I’m watching you with Belle, I am watching a version of my past life unfold. 😂😅
One thing I came away valuing the most about that experience was how much it pushed and taught me in horsemanship. It really forces you to learn and understand things from their perspective in a way that is often overlooked with more forgiving horses. It can be incredibly challenging, but unbelievably rewarding.
I’m so glad Belle ended up with you, Shae. At the time that I got my mare all those years ago, I didn’t have prior experience training a horse from the ground up (essentially untrained). It was honestly overwhelming, at times. But I didn’t want to give up on her, or myself. I’m so glad I hadn’t.
That experience, while I wouldn’t change it for the world, makes me love what you do at Free Spirit even more. One of my biggest fears back then was if I failed her, what path that would lead her down.
I can’t tell you the level of soul-deep appreciation I have knowing that there are people like you out there, giving these horses the training and tools they need to end up on the right path to a happy life.

I really enjoyed your voice-over explanation of what you are doing with Belle and your approach to working with her through peaceful cooperation and seeking a bond of trust.
It is so nice to see how you present the option of training her without force in a way that is focused on gaining positive experiences, and if she is startled for a moment, that you go the route of reassuring her by showing that you represent safety and will not beat her into submission through her fear.

❤Weird is good when working with horses. Sometimes you have to be a little wired to get your point across without scaring them to death.
She trust you and that’s the most important thing right now. Gaining their trust should be first and foremost above anything you do with a horse. If they trust you they will do anything for you. Trust is a two way street for both horses and humans. You’re not going to get very far if you don’t trust each other. ❤🐴👍
You did a great job with Belle. You also have a soothing voice when you speak to Belle to either praise or give directions. You are an excellent horse trainer. You are so intune with each horse's temperament.. I like the way you take as much time as needed with each instruction. Well done Belle.

Like I said your doing a great job. I use to be a wreck when my mares got close. Please do this , I know most of the attention will be on the baby but I was told when I got started make sure you give the mare lots of love.she will be very tired.I use to take my mares a bucket of lukewarm water with a little corn syrup or pancake syrup mixed in. It will give her a little boost.I was also told to learn everything I could just Incase I was needed, but to let the mare take the lead because she knows best.I am sure everything will be fine. Love your mare and know you will be a great mom to both.

Glad she's doing better and settling in. As you were working with her I was thinking she doesn't look like a horse that was ridden and then 20 seconds later you answered that question. At least she's halter trained and has manners. She's so pretty.

I totally agree about letting a horses stop and poop! I have always done this on the lunge and my horse is so funny cause he always turns his head to look at me after he poops! Like he's saying, thank you! lol! Also, my TWH was just terrified of the lunge whip the first time I tried to lunge! It took me MONTHS of just rubbing him all over with the whip before using it to guide him lunging. I also used a stick and string to gradually let it touch and lightly wrap around his back and front legs, have him follow it with me dragging it along side him. So sad the damage we have to undo what someone else has done! He is a totally different horse that when I got him 9 yrs. ago, and I will NEVER break that bond, trust he has in me!

You’re doing a fantastic job! I sure am looking forward to seeing the new baby. I did want to tell you something I do watch a lot of horse videos, and one thing I noticed that they do is they wrap the tail from the top to about halfway maybe a little bit more to make sure that it doesn’t get in the way from the after birth. They leave just enough unwrapped so they can swish their tail and get rid of flies. Hope that helps.
