  • How to dial a metal guitar tone.
I have 4 tips for you to try out and improve your sound.
    1. mid-range is important!
    2. don't exaggerate with the gain
    3. use an overdrive to boost your amp
    4. use a noisegate
I'm using a Marshall MG 100 HDFX with a Harley Benton 1x12 Cab with Celstion V30
MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive and a
    Rocktron Surf Tremolo .
for the backing track, I used my trusty Boss RC-3 Loop Station.
I recorded the bass myself, for the drum track I used this :
    • Thrash Metal Drum Trac...
Venoms performance from the clip I showed you.
    • VENOM - Bloodlust - B...

One thing he forgot to mention when using a noise gate is, you want find the right spot. Too little will give a little feedback, but too much will kill your high ends, especially if your a guitarist that plays leads you will immediately notice when shredding that it sounds like it's cutting off when playing the high notes. So what you want to do, is meet it halfway.

I’ve noticed with the level on a Boss SD-1 at 12:00, the gain all the way down, and the level to taste, you can get some really cool high gain tones without having to add excess gain in front of your amp. I’ve been doing it with my Randall RG3003 because of how huge it sounds and with the tone pot dialed back, the treble all the way up, the mids set to taste, & the presence dialed in to tame any problematic high end frequencies, it takes it to territory that not even a Tube Screamer could dream of accomplishing.
I use a combination of EQ, overdrive, & distortion in a single pedal rig for the stuff I play, but the SD-1 could possibly be one of the filthiest overdrives I’ve ever heard for anything high gain.

I own this amp and even though its one of many different amps i own, every time i tell someone the MG HDFX isnt as bad as you think i get laughed at... I think its a fun solid state and without a doubt still has a Marshall signature to the voicing... Is it a JCM800? Of course not... But its not shite at all... Nice work, brother.

Good insight….. I’ve also got the mg100hdfx head and cab…. I’ve upgraded the speakers in my cab to the EHX speakers and that made it really tighten up …. I do like that amp tho , for playing cleans the built in effects are awesome

Hey, great video. Thanks for the tips very informative. I just got a Marshall MG HDFX 100 amp and a Marshall 4x12 cabinet. The cabinet has one port on the back, and the silver tag reads model MG 412B, lead 4x12, 120w RMS , 8 Ohms. The amp has 2 red inputs that say minimum total imp. 4 Ohms but doesn't say what Ohm either input is?
The back of amp also reads, output 100 watts RMS into 4 Ohms. I got them together, and I'm new to amp heads and cabinets, so I was hoping you could tell me how to connect them properly...it also came with the foot switch, which I see an input for on the back. Please help me connect them

      Hey, thank you for watching!
      About your question:
Ideally, you should connect 8 ohms to 8 ohms, 4 ohms to 4 ohms etc.
You shouldn't connect an 8 ohms speaker out to a 4 ohms cab
But you can connect the 4 ohms speaker out to the 8 ohms cab
the mg is a transistor amp, so it's fine.
So short answer is : you can connect the red speaker out to the cabinet BUT (AND THIS IS IMPORTANT) DO NOT use an instrument cable, it has to be a speaker cable. The instrument cable can get hot and will be damaged.
The footswitch has to be plugged into the input saying "footswitch" so you can't do anything wrong here.
I hope that helped, it's a little difficult to write it down here.
