- Most people go for a 3-row SUV these days, but Automotive Engineer David Chao explains that 3-row minivans like this 2022 Honda Odyssey actually make more sense than typical SUVs. David provides 7 reasons why minivans are better than 3-row SUVs or crossovers. This is a engineer's full review of the 2022 Honda Odyssey.

Never in a million years did I think I would be in the market again for a minivan again. I drove a Honda Odyssey one when my kids were very little ten years ago. My two youngest are in middle school, and they both have big sports bags (hockey, golf, football) so I need a larger trunk. I have owned large SUVs, like the Suburban and an Expedition, but I did not like how they drove and how difficult they can be to park in tight spots or in a parking garage. I was originally going to buy the new 2023 Pilot, but when I went to the dealership I sat inside a new 2023 Odyssey, I was amazed at all of the interior space. I had forgotten how roomy and comfortable they are. I had my kids with me, so I had them test out the second and third rows. In most three row SUVs, the third row is a joke. A minivan would be great for road trips, throwing the dogs in the car, or when I have to drive their friends around as well. You can't beat the enormous trunk when that back seat is folded. I am very tempted to buy the Odyssey instead of the Pilot. If you can get past the minivan stigma, its definitely a smarter purchase.
Did you purchase the minivan?
100% agree, minivans are far, far more practical and make more sense than a an Suv. From a safety perspective I believe it’s far more safer than the majority of Suv from the roll-over aspect. I have always owned minivans and love them, they are more than a vehicle, they are a lifestyle. The only thing Suv got going for them is image.
Dave, you are correct about the practicality. I guess it’s a stigma thing. Most don’t think they are “cool”. Gotta love the sliding doors. Great vehicle. Thanks for sharing.
Don't dis it until you try it. LOL. We may get another ody to replace our 2012 in a few years.
I can't see how people don't think vans aren't cool. They're freaking great.
@@PrizeJ only teenagers think like this. No normal adult in the real world is saying this. This is a tired commentary that UA-cam "influencers" like to perpetuate. Its not true.
@@remyd8767 Yeah I know, vans are fantastic. I used to have a van decades ago. They look alot different now(and the ones that are around now, they are sadly phasing out). There are so much great uses to vans. RVs still exist and are being made and sold, but vans people don't buy...because they lack appreciation. Booooo
Never understood the cool factor thing. When choosing a family vehicle, practicality should be one of the biggest dealbreakers with cool factor being one of the least
Engineers are very methodical practical thinkers 👍great review.
My parents drive a 2019 Honda Odyssey and I got to say, it can haul quite a lot of stuff. From luggage for travel and university to wooden doors and other hardware materials. Honestly, without a minivan, I wouldn't know how we would get around. Plus aesthetically, it looks nice. Though I'll be 100% honest I'm not a fan of the front of the newer Odyssey's, but they aren't bad looking compared to other vehicles.
Crazy how minivans have more interior space than a Tahoe.
But Tahoe is luxurious and you can travel in style /s
@@remyd8767 take a look at the Sienna, comes with ottomans and the biggest second row you’ll see.
As usual David, I agree with you 110%... Thanks for posting... Even though I'm Not in the market anymore, I still enjoy your content.
The hole in the floor at the tailgate is another item we love.
Another minivan that I love is the smaller brother, the Honda Freed 1.5 JDM. It's a fuel saver but with great space inside.
Minivans weren't popular - until I want to buy one.
Good reasons:
Additionally, storage capacity. Space behind 3rd row is usually minimal in an suv but you have maximum storage behind 3rd row in minivan.
You can also use your minivan as a truck when carrying things like ply wood or other large items by folding the 2nd and 3rd rows. Some minivans' seats can also be easily detached and removed.
They are great for road trips.
I have a 2015 sienna by far the most convenient vehicle I have. Available 8 seats. The back seats fold flat for cargo if need . I love it.
I have 2 Odysseys a 2003 that's still running great and a 2012 they are both great! However wish I could get a used awd hybrid sienna for cheap lol
Hey David , can you make a video explaining the benefits of 2 manufacturers working jointly on a project ( example : Toyota/BMW , Toyota/Subaru , Toyota/Mazda etc )
Love this video. I was considering a Sienna but decided to go with a 4runner simply because it is known to be extremely reliable and comes from Japan.
Your reviews are the best!!!
I appreciate that!
@@AutomotivePress I appreciate the great knowledge and info! You should check out the Car Care Nut on UA-cam He knows Toyota engines.
Both really look similar, Vans are much more practical and useful to suit the needs of any family really. I do realize may not be popular to younger families but i would say when the kids are over 4 the vans make more sense. I've always choose vans for construction work. Currently have a Freestar very used and cheap. Take out the seats and most can fit the 4x8 sheet goods. Works for me.
100%. My wife and I purchased a 2021 Toyota sienna and that vehicle is probably the most comfortable thing I’ve ever driven and we only opted to get the LE trim. It’s going to be a family hauler and get trashed over the years.
I can't wrap my head around the fact that people hate minivan's the sliding doors but love the wing doors of Tesla X.
You are so right. Thanks for this great information. 👍
Yes! I'd like to see an Audi minivan, a mercedes minivan, a bmw minivan, an Acura souped up minivan would be a blessing . Single people or childless couples who love moving around have style too😊
There are Lexus minivans in Japan.
Hey David! Which is better, this odyssey or the Sienna? Love your reviews!
Thanks! I think the Odyssey drives better but the Sienna has better overall quality...
Reason #8. It can carry a bunch of 4x8 drywalls.
except for the sienna. The engineers couldn't be bothered to make the second rows removable.
Definitely agree. What I don't understand is why people keep buying SUVs... Most look hideous in my opinion.
David, in the Chinese mainland market, the price of the Honda Odyssey's high-end models and the Toyota Senna's entry-level models overlap. The Odyssey's low floor has better convenience than the Senna's high floor. Is the Senna's high floor caused by the TNGA platform? Do American consumers mind?
I am buying a 7-seat 4runner because I need an off-road minivan and it is the closest I can get to my requirements.
I’ve been in the third row of a Honda Odyssey a couple times before and it’s much roomier than the ford explorer 3rd row seats. It also gets better mileage than an explorer as well
Have an 05 V8 4Runner and 22 Sienna. Love both my minivans.
Follow the maintenance book and drive it as long as you want to.
It will just keep going.
I have a 2012 with 220000 my family will be driving it 400 miles to the beach soon i have full confidence in the old honda.
I agree with every word you said... Wise man... I like your thinking.
I love this!!! I’ve been saying this for years!
Yes, correct on all accounts. SUV"s can be a downgrade for former minivan owners in comfort, space, cool feaures only found in minivans, smoother quieter ride, and better handling. Oh, and better fuel economy and acceleration is better also.
Why can’t SUV or crossovers have the sliding doors? Or why don’t they?
Which is better - Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna?
Agreed! Thanks for the video!
Thanks I've had 3 .they are great to have. DO you think 2023 odyssey will be hybrid? Release date of 2023?
They're already hybrid here in Asia
@@zepp3lin still non hybrid in USA. 2023 available now but not many.
Beautiful ⚘️ and like how you measure things.
Hi David! Do you have any insights about the next-gen Toyota Innova? Photos have been swirling in Indian and Philippine autoblogs that the 2023 Innova has been spotted in Thailand and there are rumours that it will switch from body-on-frame RWD to unibody FWD, and that a diesel will no longer be offered. It will apparently not use the mid-sized TNGA-F platform and will no longer be related to the next-gen Fortuner and Hilux/Tacoma. Is this true? Does this mean it will use the TNGA-K platform just like the Sienna minivan?
I think the biggest reason is that it functions as a pickup truck. Some such as my kia carnival can have 2nd row removed giving room to put plywood 4' by 8' which means you can fit most home construction material which is usually around 8 ft long. Lower floor results in even more storage. You can be hauling ikea furniture one drive and 2 families the next.
Second-row chairs are removable in the Honda Odyssey in order to achieve a full-flat cargo space.
You nailed it !!
Nice presentation, but (there's always a but) I can not warm up a monitor. Tried them and they just don't ring my chimes. I'll take my 4Runner anyday of the week.
Monitor? Was mimi -- whoever invented auto correct should be made to drive a Rambler or a Nash.
I drive a mustang Gt and I absolutely love it when I own my own house I'm going to get a mini van to be the right hand vehicle to my mustang
“VAN” driver , user owner since Volkswagen Van 1960… Ford and Transport and SEINNA to date . Best car ever 2006 SEINNA , 169,000 miles to date … never in a dealer garage and has required only tires , brakes and std .maintenance …New struts and shocks at 140,000… 180,000 on Ford vans and 150,000 on Pontiac Transports …but SEINNA best of all .
What brand is that paint gauge?
It's just a generic one from amazon - they all function the same.
David, Almost every family vehicle makes more sense than a CUV/SUV. With double the mpg while driving to the mall or soccer practice and AWD, the Sienna makes more sense than
an Odyssey. 🤔
You don’t need AWD but hybrid would be good. Same engine as Accord hybrid.
Wish Lexus has a minivan importing from Japan like the Toyota Alphard in Asia.
Lexus already has a minivan for a while now: the Lexus LM, which is based on the Toyota Alphard; in fact, Lexus are debuting the 2nd-Gen LM in over 60 countries, including Japan (where it didn't appear initially), Europe, and Australia. Unfortunately, the LM won't appear in America.
Thank you 🙏🏽
1985: My parents drove a station wagon, station wagons are uncool, I'm getting a minivan
2005: My parents drove a minivan, minivans are uncool, I'm getting an SUV
20XX: My parents drove an SUV, SUVs are uncool, I'm getting a station wagon
1x(10/14/22)….1….2:00.,.done thank you excellent
I miss my minivan!
There are cars like the Toyota Raum or Sienta.
Not vans, but they have sliding doors.
Any car should have them!
Agree with you but offroading capability is missing
i trade in my 2021 odyssey because gas consumption is so expensive
I agree with you. but HONDA should bring 4WD and Hybrid like a Japanese version , We really need 4WD in CANADA.
#8. Car insurance is cheaper with a minivan compared to an SUV.
And by the way,you got no idea how to use the caliper. Tat explains everything
Has Toyota contacted you on your Wastegate video? They contacted my General Manager to have me to stop making videos on the subject.
Do you work for a dealership? I'm press/media so I'm in a different situation from you.
@@AutomotivePress yes I do.
The AWD Sienna Hybrid is superior to the Odyssey. Most places outside of Florida and Phoenix get snow and ice which make AWD mandatory. In addition fuel prices are through the roof. The Odyssey will cost a fortune to drive, never mind the expensive timing belt replacement.
Snow makes snow tire mandatory, not AWD. Steep hills make AWD very desirable
Odyssey ride is better and engine is much better.
@@realnapster1522 No way. It has a junk V6 that still uses a timing belt. I know someone that had a dead cylinder at only 80k miles. Pilots and Odysseys depreciate quickly.
How did this myth, yes myth, that AWD is mandatory in snow and ice ever become so widespread? This has to be one of the great marketing tricks ever pulled off in the car industry. Test after test after test here on UA-cam and in various car publications have shown conclusively that good, not even the best, just good, snow tires greatly outperforms even the most advanced AWD system in snow and ice while being much cheaper than speccing a two-wheel drive car to be AWD.
My FWD Golf with snow tires I purchased for 650 CAD - all four tires and four steel rims along with installation - can climb, stop in, and descend over 30 degree incline hills in Canada with no issues whatsoever even with a foot of snow. My friend's RWD 3 series BMW can do the same thing. If the issue is that you have no space for snow tires, there are all-weather tires - not to be confused with all-season tires - with the snowflake symbol on them that performs 80-90 percent as good as winter tires and which can be driven all year long. Look into something like the Michelin Cross Climate 2 or the Nokian WRG4.
Most people really just put down over 30k for a vehicle without doing anything beyond very basic research huh. That's how myths like "AWD by itself is great in snow" become so widespread. People who don't know ask and trust the opinions of people who also don't know any better.
@@GlassOnion23 Winter tires perform poorly on warm pavement. Weather changes rapidly so they are not an option. In addition you have to buy additional wheels to put them on. Most people don’t have a place to store them. All weather tires and all wheel drive are the only realistic option. An all wheel drive with bald tires goes better in the snow than a rear drive with winter tires. AWD cars hold their value better so it’s essentially a free option.
Actually minivans are falling out of favor and sells of minivans are falling.
How much did Honda pay this guy?
👍
85% of people will never use their 4X4 who is going to get their 40K plus vehicle scratched. lol mini van is better
Not as good off-road, though.
I’ve seen too many minivan in car crashes where the families burn alive since they can’t get out because of the sliding door being stuck so it’s a pass for me. I prefer body on frame suv.
Oh gawd!
Minivan is one of safest vehicles in crashes with lowest death rates.
LoL, don't bull crap for the sake of it, show me the statistics. Mini Van is one of the safers you can drive.
Wow dude, ur a typical engineer, talk about things that don't make sense. Every new car has a very good paint job, it depends on material and time when u start to see the paint peelinv, as for gaps between panels, has nothing to do with overall car quality, it doesn't affect the engine or ride quality🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Cope. U must own a Tesla
But you can't drive a minivan for business purposes, and young people don't like it either. Full size SUV is the way to go.
👍
