Nice clear job. Just a FYI, I live in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The name is West Coast Salish and is anglicized from K'humux, or other spellings. The Comox Logging and Railway Co. logged the Comox Valley and around Comox Lake for at least four decades starting about 1909.
Great locomotive and review. I have the DCC Ready version in which I installed TCS WOWSound. Lots of forums said it was "impossible", and that you needed to remove the big circuit board underneath. But for me, it was a piece of cake. I didn't have to remove anything in the interior. If there is one thing I have a complaint about, it's that the pistons and crankshaft move WAY too fast. However, I'm sure there isn't a fix for that.. Oh well.
Why does the locomotive have a letter "F" on the side of the cab? It is already numbered 4. Also, the ESU decoder got its sounds from Cass, WV, from their Heisler (as far as I can tell). The bell sounds the same as on Cass Scenic Railroad #6 (as in the Heisler, not Big Six or Moore-Keppel & Co. #6), and Cass has the best collection of geared locomotives in the country.
Hey I have a question I have a Athearn diesel and a mth diesel and they don't run at the same speed, when I put them in a consist is there a way to make it so they do run at the same speed without 2 controllers?
hard to find these by any company anymore, your looking at $400 and up for these. Everywhere you look they're outta stock.. Sad, because it's one of the most interesting locos i've seen.
I like the engine but every time i start it up my ten wheeler with a digitrax decoder go's crazy. The manual says the start current surges when activated. It is now in the quiet corner because it behaves badly..
I never associate quality with Rivarossi. I thought they where along the lines of Tyco and the others of the time. Then again I thought they were no longer made. Great little unit.Scott
Honestly don't know why but I just don't feel you knew what you were reviewing. Perhaps because it's clear you model modern mainline. Few flaws you missed and some stuff you did not mention. Like the gearing or the inclines it can handle. If you get a geared locomotive you should expect it do do what geared locomotives do and we did not get any information on that.
This Bozo does not know anything .Just gets paid to promote anything even if it is bad.He use to claim he was on the buyers side. That credibility has been gone many moons and probably never was.
+Warren Wimmer What typo would you be referring to Warren? If you paid attention to the original vid, it was the pronunciation of "logging" as " lodging" Try to focus Warren, thanks.
+gearedsteam12 You are missing the point. Why do people like you look for any miner mistake to complain about? I think we know what he meant. Just enjoy the work that went into the video, because even Steven Spielberg has errors in his movies.
THIS IS NOT ON YOU!!! So please don't get defensive. You pointed out the features well. Maybe too well.... Flash on the bell? Decoder in the Cab, instead of the Coal Bunker, where there is plenty of hidden room? Hornsby responded to that with "We needed to fit extra weight in the hopper." (OK, I find the English nomenclature amusing!) BUT - why not shave a little weight out of the rear bunker, move the decoder in THERE (hidden from sight) and add more weight, distributed in the Cab roof, Cab floor, and some more in the boiler! Why did I bother writing them? Because those little things you pointed out are overlookable in a $60-$90 model, maybe even a $120 model.... But they want over $300 DOLLARS for that!!! Sooner or later, we in the Hobby NEED to stop buying overpriced and underwhelming locomotives, JUST because they happen to be available! Maybe, the exorbitant prices may finally come back down to a level where the Hobby that I've loved for 39 years will go back to GROWING instead of constantly shrinking....
Sorry, the Soapbox had to happen.... Not EVERYONE in the Hobby has a 3500+ Sq Ft Home, and over $500 per month in disposable income. Some of us are barely scraping by, but still want to enjoy this hobby...
All just say this, if the two things that bug you about this engine is that some designer didn't think to put the decoder and speaker in the coal bunker and that whatever casting die was used for the bell was slightly worn, you've got nothing to complain about. Unfortunately, everyone is feeling the economic pinch and almost no one has disposable income. That's the reason why retired folks seem to be the only ones who can enjoy the hobby, they paid their dues, made their money, and don't have too much to worry about.
I too enjoy watching your reviews but the one thing that drives me absolutely nuts is all the time you take on showing us how to open a box, how to undo the plastic packaging and showing extra parts. why can't you just mention the what warranty comes with the product and call it good. i myself would like to see the product run, how it performs instead of showing us how it would run on a module layout by going back and forth. come on side you got the room show us what it does with brass rolling stock as opposed to ready to run plastic products. show us what looks like 28th an actual train and maybe run it across a switch or 2 instead of showing us all the packaging we have to look forward to throwing away. Otherwise great job bro.
+P Mason I believe you mean geared locomotive, not articulated locomotive, as articulated would mean an entirely different thing. Just trying to iron out some ruffles :D Also, there was a fourth type of geared locomotive, a clone of Lima's Pacific Coast Shay, which forced Lima to actually develop the Pacific Coast, it is called the Willamette.
Gosh? Loging is about cutting down trees and shipping them. Log ing. Lodging (the word you are saying is about motels!) Lodge ing. Get it? Please do a bit more research on your reviews. I have watched many and sometimes come away with knowing less about a product than I did before viewing. Peace :D
+Superseanbarry Just because I had a repetitive verbal flub twice in the video that I fixed at 12:23 doesn't mean I'm too stupid to know the difference between lodging and logging. I've been on logging scenic railroads such as Roaring Camp in California and Cass Scenic in West Virginia. This video was filmed at 11pm at night after working a full day at my day job and yet still trying to provide these as a service just to hear people like you complain...so please spare me.
How could anyone know less when watching a video about a product even if not so detail oriented but is at least shown off . That is a little erroneous don't you think?
No offense intended. I have watched many of your videos. Mostly informative but many ill prepared. For example, say, how does the logging loco do on steep grades? Pulling power? As far as your altruistic view of yourself and providing a service? I think there is some ego there to perform in front of an audience no? Being tired because of a long work day? Come on man. I did not say you were stupid. If you want to provide a service perhaps you should prepare a little.
I'm not following you man, anyone who gets in front of a camera with a significant amount of subs has an ego? I'm not going to get into a back and forth with you. I do the reviews and you can like it or dislike it but they are how they are. I usually do pull tests but the tester broke and I have another one on the way. I have many other reviews and videos to get to so I can't delay a video over a pull tester being broken.

Put a few cars behind it on a level grade if it spins take one off, repeat. This would give a sort of real world demo of what it can handle.Pull gauge is nice ,but then again does not tell the real story of actual function. Just a idea you might want to consider. Thanks for your time with your videos.

Thank you! Refreshing to see a Heisler, which is one of my favourite locomotives.
Late night video guys....logging, logging...I got it down now plus I corrected myself at 12:23.

I have two (non-sound) , it will become silky smooth once broken in by running in both directions and a light oil. Thanks for the great review.
Can't wait to see the Cass Scenic Railroad HO scale Shay review! I rode the railroad in August with Shay #5 and #6 "Big 6"
Can't say this was one of your better reviews...
+Northwest Railfan oh well life goes on.

Anail??????
Rotflmao
gearedsteam12 - Why is he A nail?????? 😲 😜
Pmslotrsafykwim
are u ever going to get a 3 truck version of this? james

It identifies which shed it is serviced at on the Comax Logging network, or if you prefer a "Fantastic" runner, take your pick.
wonder if they will ever release a Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad version
How do they couple up. There different couplers do the uk.
I have several locos from the 70s and 80s including a Heisler. Is there a way to upgrade them for DCC and sound?
do you know what ESU LookSound version is uses and how many sound functions it has??
Hey I have a question I have a Athearn diesel and a mth diesel and they don't run at the same speed, when I put them in a consist is there a way to make it so they do run at the same speed without 2 controllers?
Thanks so much. It's a great looking locomotive.
Very interesting little Steam Locomotive!
Who did you buy this from? I have searched all over to get one and can't find it anywhere! Thanks for your awesome reviews!
Is Rivarossi still making trains or have they gone out of business?
Awesome review! I'm 100th LIKE!
you can see the movement under the loco it's awesome
hard to find these by any company anymore, your looking at $400 and up for these. Everywhere you look they're outta stock.. Sad, because it's one of the most interesting locos i've seen.

David Kos - DON'T use Digicrap! 😜
wait i'm so confused. ... i thought rivarossi went out of business. or did they manage to pull out of the stall they were in?
Bought by Hornby, UK.
oh ok. that makes sense. thanks.
I never associate quality with Rivarossi. I thought they where along the lines of Tyco and the others of the time. Then again I thought they were no longer made. Great little unit.Scott
Nice job as usual!
Can you try the triplex
I have a question: How much does all this cost you
also can we see your entire layout
Pretty sweet!
Cool review!
Hi. Very good lokomotiv.

Seems an unusual purchase relative to your layout.
definitely different but pritty cool
Bella loco
That loco will prolly smothen up after a break-in running session.
"Lodging"????
Logging :)
+gearedsteam12 Big deal, have you never heard of a typo?

So how is he going to know the proper pronunciation unless someone tells him?
The world we live in today....
+gearedsteam12 It is not an English test. It is just is review of a toy train!
You must be full of your self.
Un fortunately I cant find the locomotive.
THIS IS NOT ON YOU!!!
So please don't get defensive. You pointed out the features well. Maybe too well....

Its not lodging, its logging.
+Brian Barnhorn I corrected myself at 12:23

OK
"LOGGEING"
as slow as the real thing was
as far as I know, they were slow and powerful, with great traction
+P Mason I believe you mean geared locomotive, not articulated locomotive, as articulated would mean an entirely different thing. Just trying to iron out some ruffles :D

Please stop bastardizing descriptions. This is an electric model of a steam loco. In other countries, when they say steam, they mean it.
