  • How to replace ball joints on a 2002 - 2008 dodge ram 1500
    This is same for 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd. Upper ball joint and lower ball joint replacement.
    I pressed out and installed the lower ball joint with a harbor freight ball joint tool kit it worked good. I did replace the upper control arm with ball joint installed. I got all the parts from amazon. Hope this helps you out. Total time for upper and lower ball joints on both sides was about 2.5 hours.

    After wrestling with the lower ball joint for 2 hours, decided to go on UA-cam university and found this video. I can’t thank you enough for sharing your video, it literally took us a minute to take it out using the C clamp press and a Milwaukee 18v impact wrench. NOW!!!!! getting the bushings in and out on the lower control arms was a challenge though, but with some persistence and patience, mostly cursing at it we managed to get the job done. Truck had 310k miles with all original suspension components, all were shot, you’d drive over a pebble and felt like the tires were coming off. Again, thank you for sharing.

    The only thing I noticed when tightening up the back bushings on the control arm you're supposed to put the tire back on and drop the vehicle then tighten those two bolts in the back this is the reason why you have to take it to an alignment shop now... of course also make sure you are in a flat surface so the tire is standing upright not leaning

    I've watched over 20 videos on Dodge Rams and I cannot find upper ball joints that look like mine it's so crazy how different every one of them are and there around 98 to 2001 my upper ball joint is a whole unit by itself that attaches to the control arm with two bolts so all I have to do is take out them two bolts and slide it out but I don't have to use a compression tool because it's already compressed when you buy them new I'm actually kind of lucky because it's going to be extremely easy to replaceI've been waiting because I didn't want to spend a hundred and fifty on renting the tool even though you get it back I just didn't have the money but all along I didn't even need literally all the tools I'm going to need is a jack probably a 5/8 bit a hammer and pickle fork.... I just find it really weird I can't find any that look like mine but when I search 2001 Dodge ram upper ball joints the ones that go to my truck are the first ones that pop-up lol watching all of these videos I've been watching confuse the hell out of me I should have just put eyes on it first cuz I've never changed them out before so when I watched the video and then looked at my upper ball joints I was very confused lol I'm good now though I know how to change them but does anyone know what I'm talking about

    • @maxwellssilverhammer5538
      @maxwellssilverhammer5538 6 років тому

      This is true up through 2005 I believe, but Dodge changed the upper control arm starting in 2006 from a cast metal "V" shape like on your truck (2003) to a stamped and welded steel "C" shape design. This new design allows for replacement of the upper ball joint without having to replace the control arm.

      The steering and suspension on a 2004 3500 4x4 is a completely different animal than the 1500 shown in this video. If it was a 2WD, then they'd be similar, but the 4WD is very different. The control arms are separate from the ball joints. You can replace both the upper and lower ball joints without having to do anything with the control arms. You can get them from RockAuto.com. Moog ball joints tend to be very good aftermarket replacements.
      Here is the title of a UA-cam video example of replacing 4x4 ball joints on a 2500/3500: "Ball Joints passenger side Ram 2500 Diesel" (won't let me cut and paste a link).

    Very deceptive on the lower ball joint. Notice how it was partially shifted downward when he started filming? It takes near a act of God to get the lower ball joint to start moving downward. He makes it appear so that just a love tap to free it up with press. In reality it takes heat and a lot force to get it moving. Tie rod end is no walk thru the park either.
