Best video I have seen on something this complicated - shows you exactly what to do (and not to do). Explains tools needed and tells you why certain steps are required. Highly recommend!

Not sure who needs to hear this, but please consider researching the "Lisle 38700 Spindle Snap Ring Pliers Ford SD" if you're encountering challenges. I endured multiple iterations of pliers and the Lisle (or its clones) are the only pliers that made this repair "enjoyable."
    To the content creator:
    - I used this video the first time I pieced together my front axle years ago.
    - No matter how many times I've disassembled and reassembled my front axle, this video continues to be my go-to reference for front axle repairs.
    - In my opinion that speaks volumes to your value to the community. Thank you!

I bought the Lisle pliers, the ones I got are junk! The ratchet arm would not alllow the pliers to close like they should it would bind real bind so took the ratchet arm off and they worked.

This is an awesome demonstration. I've done this job a few times, but I wish I would have viewed your video first.
See a comment about it being tedious having to watch you remove every bolt ! I strongly DISAGREE !!! Cause it gives a tutorial to the less mechanically inclined. Plus we can always fast forward, which is better then being left wondering.
AWESOME VID !!! YOU THE MAN !
    THANKS !!

I've been a mechanic for about 30 years now that and can fix most things with no help but now that youtube exists i always run through a job before i do it so i can see where other mechanics run into problems what tools they used and get torque specs and special tool info which always makes a job easier when you can go directly to what works best thank you for putting up all the videos you put up i enjoy them and they make my life easier...keep up the good work.

Did my first F350 ball joints ever today... Your video was invaluable! I was able to take extra care and extract the old hub seal and reuse it as I had neither the install tool nor a new seal available to me. Not a bad job after I've done my first today... But I'd definitely have a new seal next time as I could see where things could go south on ya in a heartbeat 😉

Done and done! Completed my ball joints yesterday by following your step by step video. I've never done this type of repair before, but I found your video very helpful and taught me a lot. Thank you! I've also done my brakes and rotors front and rear following your tutorials. I did have to have a local shop press on the axle seal and ball joints and was charged $45 for only one side as I was a referral to them. I broke my vise, busted my workbench loose from the wall and cracked the lower support beam. So I had the shop help me out.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  8 років тому

+Rick Case Sounds like a great success story! Spending $45 per side is not bad considering the savings over having the job done elsewhere. Proud of you. Take care.

Super helpful. Someone may have already said this, but after cranking and cranking on the press and not having the da*n thing come out, DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE the value of a nap, re-watching, and then turning the press around and removing the joint in the correct direction: EASY PEASY. Thanks!

Excellent video Tim; many thanks. I must share this.......I got into one of these puppies as far as replacing the hub and the shaft dust seal. I actually managed to install the 'large' seal very carefully with a few modified left over pluming supplies. I am now the proud owner of Ford's universal tool; the sledge hammer. I permanently plugged the pathetic vacuum 4x4 actuator. Too bad engineering is not one of Ford's better ideas.

Was this the first time they were changed out on the truck? I'm doing this project on my 2003 F250 after the front end shop I took it to refused to do an alignment due to all 4 ball joints being worn out. I've removed and replaced the set on one side, and though they are a bit sloppy, they don't seem excessively worn out. I hope I'm not doing this job unnecessarily.

@@fahey6797 i don't know. i am not the first owner, but all 4 needed replaced. visibly, they didn't look all that bad - until i removed them. i think they were original as there were no grease fittings. replacements usually have grease fittings.

Thank you, Sir, for the very informative video. Very thorough, including mentioning the little things, such as torque specs, things to watch out for, proper tools, and a good workable sequence. Not only did this video help me save a little cash, I was able to fix a lot of discovery work - replacing the axle shaft U-Joints, new axle shaft dust covers, etc. I opted to replace the wheel bearings and purchased new Warn hubs.

Just caught your channel on the 2017 Holiday Greeting, watching you from Alaska, South Central area.
My old 95 F250 4X4 still serves me well, but she's getting old, just like me.

Excellent video. Question: will the OTC6697 work and be necessary for a stick/manual transmission with no vacuum too? I've got a 2007 F350, crank windows, stick, as basic as possible.

Wow Tim that was a great demonstration. Excellent lighting and angle shots. Never seen a camera mounted on a light before, that's a first, good idea. I'm not a fan of the Ford 4wd system with vac. Hubs. I like the Chevy design , so much easier. Man that was a lot of work, I'll leave them jobs to you young guys .👍

Steve Rob thanks for the complements! That's an old gopro I decided to mount to my LED light. Someday I hope to get a better camera for low light conditions. The editing took a little bit but the export and upload took even longer. Hope it helps someone. I also don't care for the hub system. I always forget to bid the seals which cost $50+ ea. I did rear brakes, tie rod ends, drag link and front end alignment and it ended up around $2700+ 😀

Thanks for the video. I followed this step by step. Very informative. Saved me a ton of money with out taking it to the shop. Very time consuming but got it done over the weekend. Also did the tie rod ends, track bar etc.

Best SD ball joint video I have seen. Thanks for you time. I have the seal tool on the way. Looks so easy compared to going without... even if I only use it on one truck. Perfect amount of information, without all the wasted time most people seem to pile in other videos. Thanks again.

@mattgilbert8396 depends what year SD you have. The coil springs are different than leaf.

Best video I’ve seen. Is it the same process and torque specs for a 2004 Ford excursion? Thank you for the video.

For all the people who say straight axles are so heavy duty it seems they are more problematic then any I.F.S that G.M has stuck with ? What is your opinion Car Doctor? Nice job on the video. Really appreciate you taking the time to video all this and put it out there for all of us.

+American made Lots of issues with these but not like the GM diffs have been without fault. Seems like one manufacturer gets one thing right and another something else. Wish they would just do what is proven to work and stick with it but then again I would be out of a job! haha. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. Getting ready to do my brothers truck today.
Lol on a side note about 18 years ago I did exactly what you said not to do. I changed the front brake pads on my Ford Taurus and forgot to pump the brakes. After I got finished I hoped in shut the door started it up and threw it in reverse. The car idled high after the first start and I came flying out of the garage at warp speed and I T-Boned my F150. The way my driveway is positioned if my truck wasn’t there I would of ended up in my neighbors front office. Luckily my kids or anyone else was around and the only thing hurt was my pride. I totaled my car due to the rear quarter panel damage and did $1800 damage to my truck which I thought it would of been a lot more. Felt like a total idiot.

Wow! Just Wow! NOT JUST A BALL JOINT VIDEO.... An absolute MUST WATCH for anyone planning on doing a tear down of the front axle. Step by step. Excellent detail. I will be replacing my ball joints. But most important for me is I need to replace my Universal joints (possibly the whole axle). Replacing Locking hubs, and quite possibly the whole wheel bearing and Hub assembly. This video shows it all on how to remove each of these pieces. Thank you Car Doc! One question if I may.... Is the torque specs you mentioned on this 2009 F350 the same for a 2008 F250 (which is mine)?
