I never read anything by the trio’s h.s. teacher, but after they won TSO, Avi’s high school choral director/teacher posted at the forum on Choralnet.org (I don’t think it’s available anymore, though). He was with the PTX support group in the audience at the live finale when they won, wearing one of the yellow t-shirts. In the post, he talked about how he completely rewrote the curriculum after Avi walked in the first day of his freshman year, with his newly reconfigured vocal chords (his voice dropped the summer before). He recognized immediately the sheer talent he had in Avi and did everything he could to nurture it. One year, he brought in Trist Curless, now the bass singer for the Manhattan Transfer, to conduct a day-long workshop for all of his singers, and he made sure that Trist had a one-on-one session with Avi to teach him how to effectively use a microphone, something bass singers apparently have to work on. The teacher was also the one who encouraged Avi to go to Mt. SAC for college because their music program is that good.
Honestly it hurts me to say this, but a good chunk of music teachers aren't the greatest. Don't get me wrong theses some amazing teachers out there. Pentatonix was going to do Cher's Believe on the Sing Off, but changed their song that week because they were having problems with the arrangement. They did Video Killed the Radio Star instead. I think they kept it in mind until they could really do it right.
IIRC one of the other reasons they did that was because one of the bands they made friends with was gonna do that song if they made it to that week but had been removed from the competition so they did it as a tribute to their friends.

Pentatonix used auto tune for an effect on Believe to honor Cher who was the first to use it as an effect when she did the song. They put salutes and subtle honors like this in several of their covers. In Bohemian Rhapsody near the end where they show a star field and Mitch goes back into his electric guitar, that’s a salute to Brian May who in addition to being an awesome guitarist also has a PhD in Astrophysics. The black and white with gold accents setting in their Shallow cover is a salute to the movie posters advertising the movie A Star is Born in which the song was used.

Your comment about your life being complete with the Blue (Da Ba Dee) song is the same way I felt about it. I am a huge electronic/EDM fan and have been from way back when! I was so excited about Night at the Roxbury as well. Hi Janelle! I was XX years old in the 90's but my boys were teenagers then, so I knew every single song they sang! Thanks again for the reaction and the nostalgia!
They did auto tune in homage to Cher and the ‘Cher effect’. Great reaction. Their arrangement and transitions are impeccable! I would love to see you react to ‘Rise’ by Superfruit, and ‘Creep’ AGT performance by Brian Justin Crum (and he is featured in Rise)
Great reaction. Thank you. They out did themselves on this medley. As a music teacher, I think that you would love their performance in their video for "Come Along". Please react to it.
Hell, yes! Believe was a phenomenon in its own right and I'd annoy my mom to tears singing that song all day long (I didn't know then, but I'm a contralto, and I was super excited to find a 'girl' song that was comfortable for me to sing). Believe sounds in true form with the autotune, just like Bohemian Rhapsody's panning to the left and right of the stereo in the beginning. I love PTX for including those small details that pay homage to the original, even when they are reluctant to add effects they can't perform live.
New sub. You had me at fairies, ninjas, and dragons! Plus..."Emiliooooo, the mighty duck man..." Hi Janelle! Great reaction! Love PTX! Can't wait to check out more!

I was a little worried when I first heard this, because I thought people would unknowingly just hear the autotuning and go "Ooh! Ooh! Look! Pentatonix can't really sing, listen to that autotuning!" without realizing it's on purpose to mimic what Cher did in her song (being from the 90s and before a lot of younger folk's time). Thankfully I've been wrong so far and haven't seen any comments on any videos on it. It's still autotuning, to answer your question, but it's tweaked to such an extent that it actually makes an effect instead of subtly trying to fix someone's singing.
Loving your Pentatonix reactions! You should check out Superfruit too, Mitch and Scott’s efforts as a duo. Their cover of The Promise by When In Rome is stunning and Rise by Katy Perry with a few other guests is incredibly powerful!!
I realize you mostly take recommendations from Patreon, but if you want to hear Mitch blow you away with high notes, try the cover of Gold or Aha Shanghai Star Vista. Also in Aha, you get to hear Avi blow the speaker (it's live).
That was an actual use of auto-tune dedicated to Cher because she was the first artist to use it (on Believe) as an artistic effect rather than a corrective effect. As you said, everyone back then called it "The Cher Effect"! They really knocked this one out of the park! Great production and my favorite medley of theirs since Daft Punk!
@@gailseatonhumbert9199 Sorry, but I'm calling BS on that. A cappella simply means no musical instruments. And even old blues a cappella groups back in the early 20th century occasionally used harmonicas or other small hand-held instruments (Jew's harps for example) on their songs...nobody ever accused them of no longer being a cappella. And as for post-production effects, Pentatonix has been using studio effects of some kind dating all the way back to their very first album, just as every current a cappella group does post-production on their studio recordings.
@@larrywt656 seriously? Well then screw everything and bring in all the fake synthetic stuff you want. You had a choice- to deal with truth and admit they had abandoned the form and you still like them so the acapella doesn't matter to you but you choose lying and attacking people who state the truth and THAT is very sick. You just like Pentatonix and have decided to defend them no matter what they do. That's the bullshit and lack of integrity.
If you want to hear one of the best covers of “Creep”, listen to Brian Justin Crum’s official video (in black and white) of the full length version of this song. A truly touching rendition. His vocal abilities and breathe control are amazing. A Night at the Roxbury is a one of the few moviews I have rented regularly for the past couple of decades. Bonus: It has my favorite B-list actor, Lochlyn Munroe! (The personal trainer guy.)
The Cher effect from what I learned from other reaction videos is from auto tuning. Also, if you like these mash up Melodies, DJ, I got to pitch my forever pitch of “the Wizard of Ahhs” from Todrick Hall featuring pentatonix, made back in the day with Avi. It will put a smile on your face for days!

In the ‘90s I was listening to country and line dancing at the Borderline in Thousand Oaks, yeah that one. Anyway, besides Cher I’d heard only a couple of these songs. Now this medley is all one song to me. As are all the medleys and evolutions.
It's Autotune, They used it on "Believe" by Cher & on "Blue" by Eiffel 65, since it was used on the Original songs!!!! Also if you lookup "The Musician" UA-cam channel and look up "90s Dance Medley - Pentatonix Side by Side" it will play PTX video and music on the Left side while the Original 90s Video and Music is played on the Right side!!!! I really want to hear a full PTX treatment of Cher's "Believe". It'll be awesome!!! ..the Cher effect is auto tune applied to a vocal to modify the sound. It's not needed except for the sonic effect.

Tell me you didn't want it to go on and on! Gosh I had to listen to it 3-4 times just to process what I heard! Total awesomeness! Thanks for reacting!

This has become my feel good song. It is so hard to sit still.
Also I was shocked, impressed, and love that they could even try C+C music factory. So much talent in these 5 people.
OMG! I've gotten on here every day to see if you had reacted to this! I'm so glad because I knew how excited you'd be to hear them. And yes, they are better than the originals. There is a side by side video of this with the original artists, and you can't tell the difference!
Hi Linda 😃
@@janellecomeau4436 🤗
They did auto tune in homage to Cher and the ‘Cher effect’. Great reaction. Their arrangement and transitions are impeccable! I would love to see you react to ‘Rise’ by Superfruit, and ‘Creep’ AGT performance by Brian Justin Crum (and he is featured in Rise)
OMG YES!!! I second this
Night At The Roxbury is soooooo funny! Everytime I hear that song I bop my head just like Chris and Will did.
Oh, I've been waiting for you to react to this. Now my life is complete too! It's just so good!
I'm also a contralto, but older. My go to persons to sing with were Karen Carpenter, Anne Murray, John Denver, almost any tenor. :o)
New sub. You had me at fairies, ninjas, and dragons! Plus..."Emiliooooo, the mighty duck man..." Hi Janelle!
Great reaction! Love PTX! Can't wait to check out more!
Hi Danielle. Hahaha I say that quote to DJ all the time!
I think it was a missed opportunity that PTX didn't do the Butabi head bob, in unison, for even a couple seconds during that song. But hey, it's a great medley!
Thanks for this choice !! Great reaction ! Mitch really shines here ! His high notes, and lower for BLUE. Love PTX ! They all look fabulous, and the memories it brought me are fabulous !
It’s 100% about the memories for me too with this one haha. Such great feelings!
Oooh! I'm early. I love Pentatonix and your channel!
my favorite thing about this medley is how much fun Kevin was having.
Great reaction!!! I'm a pentaholic too, but who isn't these days?! The're awsome!!! I know you love VoicePlay, so I recommend My mother told me, the last one they did. Joeff crushed it!!! So, so good! 👌🔝
I so look forward to your PTX reactions! Your ear for the things I don't hear is amazing! I love all that you point out and appreciate about PTX! Thank you!
Still enjoying revisiting your reactions!!!
Yay! I’m so happy your back to doing some PTX, LOVE your reactions to them!! 💙
PENTATONIX is just unreal! UNREAL (Hi Janelle)... from DC
I love this mix, and watching you headbob to it, then switch to full analysis is so much fun!
I love your reactions the best to this group!!!!! I am listening to reactions while doing paperwprk and came across a couple of yours and now just going through every single one you have done including ones ive heard you do before! Love you and PTX. You appreciate music. I played a recorder in 4th grade and did childrens choir but wouldn't sing solos but really really love music.
Loving these reactions of PTX. Thanks.
Awesome reaction/ analysis DJ!
Yes I even listened to plenty other REACTORS from the PENTATONIX. Just incredible to listen to. I knew PLENTY songs & just adored them all. Thanks for putting it on! xx
Hey Janelle--I never saw the movie, but it was based on one of the best SNL skits of all time! Chris Kattan, Will Ferrell, and Jim Carey all grooving to such a great song--perfection!
Hi Meghan 🙋♀️
What's up Janelle and Janelle's husband, I love that movie too! I automatically do the head bop when this song comes on. As an adult living through the nineties these are such nostalgic songs, love it... lol! 😊
Hi Renee, I also head bop to the song every time I hear it 😄
I'm really enjoying all these reactions from a music teacher's point of view (as opposed to a singer or solo vocal coach) because you can so easily break down why I love them so much - things I couldn't put into words before! It takes me back to my choir days and I love it!
This just made my WHOLE MONDAY!
M'kay ... just fond you from PTX reaction video ... you rock dude! Looking for MORE!!!!!!!!! 😎😎🤘🤘🙏🙏🤩🤩
#1 - Listen to the wife,, "J". hahahah she knew #MitchFace ... {smart woman}
... yeah, you got that joke man. hahaha
#2 - You are totally the pause king ... BUT ..
we're here to see *you* react, we've all seen the videos. And you sir, react very well ...
and I love your breakdown of the skills {you remind me of my choir teacher, in a good way} ...
-I'll be watching your channel, as will many others I suspect, and PLEASE for the love of God, do more PTX video's. !!! 🤩🙏🤘😎🖖👍👌🤣😄
-Good Times!
-Steven
I love watching you enjoy
Like number 773
Hey there 🤗
Wow!! I am seeing this for the first time with you and I was having the same reactions!! Lol 🎙🤣
I too grew up watching Night at the Roxbury 🚘🕺🕺 LOVE IT
I also enjoyed the BLUE moment 💙
And Cher!!! 🎤🎶 a million times YES!!
my new favorite Pentatonix mix 🥰
See ya later👋🗻
I’ve been waiting for you to react! Sooo happy right now 😊
I was a little worried when I first heard this, because I thought people would unknowingly just hear the autotuning and go "Ooh! Ooh!
Finally! Been waiting for your reaction for ages! 😁
It takes me a while. But I’ll get there haha
Gold should be on the channel! At least I hope so haha.
@@TempleMusicAcademy Sorry, I found it. I was running off the playlist and didn't look farther.
The REAL impressive part is that they weren't even teens when most of these songs were created but they are more 90's authentic than most cover bands.
Another great reaction, I sure hope I can make your next live stream on Monday!
Larry not acappella though. They should just come out and say they aren't anymore and have done with it.
It gets me teary every time I listen to him sing and he makes me really feel the song (notice the tear drop running down his face at the end of the video). I look forward to seeing your reaction and I am a fan of your reaction videos (especially PTX … I love Mitch as well). Hello Janelle. 🙂
Hi back 😃
I have to agree..he's just incredible!! One of my favorite covers!!
👋🏻 Hi Janelle
Yes Ace of Base
“Cher” effect is auto tune
They are absolutely mind blowing - only PTX gives us this big of smiles during 2020/2021!
I had MAJOR school dance flashbacks during this 😆🇨🇦🥰
Hi Elyse 🙋♀️
Plus, that Ace of base song was also in night at the roxbury.
They need to make it a full album!✌❤🇨🇦
A Night at the Roxbury is a one of the few moviews I have rented regularly for the past couple of decades. Bonus: It has my favorite B-list actor, Lochlyn Munroe! (The personal trainer guy.)
Night at the Roxbury is one of my top five favorite comedies of all time. Your wife has impeccable taste.
it was an effect of straining autotune like Cher did or a vocoder which produces a synthesized voice sound.
"I had an older sister who was into it while I was into the angry metal thing..." Suuuurrrre lol. You loved it :)
Great Reaction!!
Hi Janelle! You're awesome! 😁
Awe thanks 💕😊 and Hi back 😃
@@janellecomeau4436 My pleasure 😁
The Cher effect from what I learned from other reaction videos is from auto tuning. Also, if you like these mash up Melodies, DJ, I got to pitch my forever pitch of “the Wizard of Ahhs” from Todrick Hall featuring pentatonix, made back in the day with Avi. It will put a smile on your face for days!
i love that movie just watched it yesterday.
I still do the night at the Roxbury head nod every time the song comes on the radio. Loved that movie
Hi Janel and yes night at the Roxbury is awesome. My brother and I years ago we’re driving down Bardstown Road where I live and just shaken or is it sides to the song like they did in the movie
I was just talking about and doing that classic head bob!! Awesome song and movie. And can we mention Mitch’s range on this one?!?
Hey DJ, I love your reactions; not only is the music great but I always learn something from you about it. Please react to Scott Hoying's 'I Should Tell Your Mama On You.' You probably won't get many requests for it because the video is kind of obscure but you won't regret it, I promise. It's just Scott, accompanied by Scott (you'll see what I mean), and incredibly impressive. Thanks! Keep up the great work!
Great reaction ! All you say is totally on the point! Please also respond to daft punk
A night at the roxbury is the bomb! I really love the "Careless Whisper" version from that movie! hello Jonelle! (sorry, I have no clue how to spell your name)
“Yes! My life is complete!” - same
Ninja's ...dragons?? wt?? lol NAR..lol windows!!!! Kevin's beat boxing is INSANE!!!! It hurts my head to realize we are now closer to 2050 than 1990🤯. Matt's bass...dude!! Hey loved that! You're calling them right!! It is called Cher effect..back then it was a Vocorder
you are correct on the Ace of Bass song
This new PTX medley made me so happy! I might not have remembered all the bands either, but MAN did this get me jamming. Shout out to your wife as well.
P.S. One of the guys at work didn’t know what Night at the Roxbury was when the song came on and thought we were all insane doing the head bobbing. Are 80s babies “old” now? Y’all!!!! 🤣
I assume "A little C & C music factory" refers to the previous song, it's just you said it during a Snap song. 3:08
My music era is 60s, 70s, early 80s, so I only know three of these songs. I wasn’t really into this even though I love PTX. Thank you for your review which has helped me hear the greatness of their singing and arrangement.
The effect is auto tune. Thanks for finally doing this one. Next you need to check out Voiceplays new one called My Mother Told Me. Love all your reactions.😁
voiceplay did a viking song called 'my mother told me' it will blow your mind
I have watched this video so many times and I gotta say that Scott owned those glasses
Agreed
In the ‘90s I was listening to country and line dancing at the Borderline in Thousand Oaks, yeah that one. Anyway, besides Cher I’d heard only a couple of these songs. Now this medley is all one song to me. As are all the medleys and evolutions.
Their original By My Eyes has the Enya effect in the beginning.
You have been Mitchslapped! It's a beautiful thing LOL
AWESOME!! Plain and simple!! MITCHHHHHHHHH
They sound Exactly the same to Me!!!!
Great Reaction as Usual!!!! I Love the way You Breakdown and Explain all of the Musical Terms!!!!
Much Love From Rome, Georgia!!!!
That’s a cool idea for a video (side by side). Hello, Georgia from Canada!
*waves frantically in maple syrup
@@TempleMusicAcademy Lol Lol Lol Lol, Hope you had some Pancakes with that Syrup!!!! I Did for Breakfast!!!! Lol
Also to get a feel for the limit (if there is one for Mitch ;) ) check out the video tracking his vocal range - the bit at the end where he's imitating a marker pen on a dry board :D
I really want to hear a full PTX treatment of Cher's "Believe". It'll be awesome!!! ..the Cher effect is auto tune applied to a vocal to modify the sound. It's not needed except for the sonic effect.
Middle school memories!!
And I love their cover of “Radioactive” with Lindsey Stirling.
came here for the PTX reaction, subbed for "i hope life is treating you really good"
Thanks, Chris! Welcome to the family!
love u!
There is a side-by-side for this that's fantastic.
YES!!! I sa it for myself and its EPIC how each individual tune is just SPOT ON!!..someone send a link?
Stay safe and healthy

I'd love to hear your reaction to 'Aha' at The Star Vista in Shanghai. Mitch will blow you away.
