    Cher was the first to use autotune as a deliberate vocal effect rather than pitch correction, which is what they were doing. After all, can't get that 90s feel without that "Cher effect" 😁🎶

      I've heard that it's a vocoder rather than autotune. I'm not an engineer, but autotune didn't come on the scene until the early 2000's? Awesome sound in any case.

      @@fowlerdp06 I had heard that too, but then someone posted a link to an article about how the effect was actually done by Cher and her producer, and how she was the first artist to pioneer it. Sorry I can't find it offhand, but it was very interesting 🙂

      Cher's "Believe" single definitely utilized Auto-Tune, not vocoder technology. Here's producer Mark Taylor explaining the process he used: ua-cam.com/video/ScxV4iozqnQ/v-deo.html

      i remember the vocoder story that was being pushed at the time - then come to find out it was actually autotune because the powers that be didnt want fully put out the technology yet to protect a trade secret. you would think that autotune was a lot older than it was at that the time but it shows it was in 97 that it came out and then cher used it on Believe in 98

      I never read anything by the trio’s h.s. teacher, but after they won TSO, Avi’s high school choral director/teacher posted at the forum on Choralnet.org (I don’t think it’s available anymore, though). He was with the PTX support group in the audience at the live finale when they won, wearing one of the yellow t-shirts. In the post, he talked about how he completely rewrote the curriculum after Avi walked in the first day of his freshman year, with his newly reconfigured vocal chords (his voice dropped the summer before). He recognized immediately the sheer talent he had in Avi and did everything he could to nurture it. One year, he brought in Trist Curless, now the bass singer for the Manhattan Transfer, to conduct a day-long workshop for all of his singers, and he made sure that Trist had a one-on-one session with Avi to teach him how to effectively use a microphone, something bass singers apparently have to work on. The teacher was also the one who encouraged Avi to go to Mt. SAC for college because their music program is that good.

      Honestly it hurts me to say this, but a good chunk of music teachers aren't the greatest. Don't get me wrong theses some amazing teachers out there. But there's also teachers that will force you to change from a alto sax (with 6 years of playing experience), to the flute, because his favorite student wanted the sax. I legit refused to play a note, still somehow passed. You can't swap my instrument 70% of the way through the year

      @@samwood917 It's a good song, and I find it highly ironic with how computers and pod casts have somewhat looped us back around to "radio stars" in their own way..even though the original song was about how people of the time were somewhat wary of 20th century media tech. There's also the fact that the line "Put the blame on VCR" was originally "Put the blame on VTR" which stands for "Video Tape Recorder"..I have a bad habit of listening for differences in original lyrics vs covers and seeing what was changed.

    Pentatonix used auto tune for an effect on Believe to honor Cher who was the first to use it as an effect when she did the song. They put salutes and subtle honors like this in several of their covers. In Bohemian Rhapsody near the end where they show a star field and Mitch goes back into his electric guitar, that’s a salute to Brian May who in addition to being an awesome guitarist also has a PhD in Astrophysics. The black and white with gold accents setting in their Shallow cover is a salute to the movie posters advertising the movie A Star is Born in which the song was used.

    Believe sounds in true form with the autotune, just like Bohemian Rhapsody's panning to the left and right of the stereo in the beginning. I love PTX for including those small details that pay homage to the original, even when they are reluctant to add effects they can't perform live.

    I was a little worried when I first heard this, because I thought people would unknowingly just hear the autotuning and go "Ooh! Ooh! Look! Pentatonix can't really sing, listen to that autotuning!" without realizing it's on purpose to mimic what Cher did in her song (being from the 90s and before a lot of younger folk's time). Thankfully I've been wrong so far and haven't seen any comments on any videos on it. It's still autotuning, to answer your question, but it's tweaked to such an extent that it actually makes an effect instead of subtly trying to fix someone's singing.

    That was an actual use of auto-tune dedicated to Cher because she was the first artist to use it (on Believe) as an artistic effect rather than a corrective effect. As you said, everyone back then called it "The Cher Effect"! They really knocked this one out of the park! Great production and my favorite medley of theirs since Daft Punk!

    • @larrywt656
      @larrywt656 3 роки тому

      @@gailseatonhumbert9199 Sorry, but I'm calling BS on that. A cappella simply means no musical instruments. And even old blues a cappella groups back in the early 20th century occasionally used harmonicas or other small hand-held instruments (Jew's harps for example) on their songs...nobody ever accused them of no longer being a cappella. And as for post-production effects, Pentatonix has been using studio effects of some kind dating all the way back to their very first album, just as every current a cappella group does post-production on their studio recordings.

    • @gailseatonhumbert9199

      @@larrywt656 seriously? Well then screw everything and bring in all the fake synthetic stuff you want. You had a choice- to deal with truth and admit they had abandoned the form and you still like them so the acapella doesn't matter to you but you choose lying and attacking people who state the truth and THAT is very sick.
      You just like Pentatonix and have decided to defend them no matter what they do. That's the bullshit and lack of integrity.

    I really want to hear a full PTX treatment of Cher's "Believe". It'll be awesome!!! ..the Cher effect is auto tune applied to a vocal to modify the sound. It's not needed except for the sonic effect.

  • @rebeccafrost7731
    @rebeccafrost7731 3 роки тому

    A lot of people say that the Cher Effect is auto tune, or an effect OF auto tune. It's actually not. It's something called a "vocoder", it's digital encoding for voice effect. Basically, it's used to turn speech into a set of digitally reproducible sounds. When it's cleaned up it sounds much the same as some of the audio book readings that are done via computer. It was used in the way it was to give the song a unique sound, which it did.
