    John 3:16-21:
    16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

    You probably know this by now or you didn't run into this problem because of the way you have your storage tank set up BUT,, with the majority of the garbage can lid style storage containers, the top isn't secure enough to allow the water to back up into the hose and fill the reservoir in the diverter system. The end result is water flowing over and leaking out of the top of your barrel.. I learned the hard way, lowering the diverter to the high water mark of the barrel isn't a great solution either. The Oatey diverter I bought was from a big box store, opened and resealed and missing the red plug, plus poor instillation instructions and when you go to there website they have videos for everything but installing this product.. I searched for this item on line and finally I DID find a video created by the manufacture and it was a link to there website with the video with the option to watch it on UA-cam? Why it didn't come up on searches when I was installing it I don't know but in the video it showed the red plug, the one that didn't come in the box I had. After A LOT of trouble shooting. trips to the hardware store and swearing and frustration with trying to get this to work plus seeing the manufacture video, I'm going to install a shutoff valve in the fill line to the tank. Unless you have a sealed system that's water tight the water isn't going to back up enough in your fill tube to fill the reservoir and allow the water to divert back down the downspout.. First one of these I've done and on this end of it a lot of the mistakes I made are now common sense,
    Bottom line? the Oatey Mystic Rainwater Collection System will not work automatically with the garbage can style storage containers and you will have to put in a shutoff valve or make sure you have that red plug (I prefer a valve).. other than that its a great $20.00 purchase (Amazon). To bad no one points this out in the DIY videos I've seen.

      Thank you for all the information! Yes I found out quickly that the water doesn’t get diverted back very easily or at all when the tank is full so I ended up drilling 2 relief holes in the top of the tank cap. So now when the tank is full, the water now pours out of the top of the tank cap and works itself to the ground. Still not the most ideal situation but hasn’t been a real big issue for us. Thanks again for sharing and stopping by.

      Thank you for the comments. The only prevention and solution I have is 2 small holes drilled on either side of the cap which allows pressure to be relieved when it’s full as well as panty hose material that I put over the inlet hole to filter particles as the water enters the system. great video, but I guess it might just collect a small percentage of rain with that diverter, especially for a short heavy rain, and most rain still flows downspout. I suggest you divert all the rain to the tote and let it overflow from the top or make an overflow yourself from the near top part of the tote to divert the overflowing rain away.

    • @HomesteadersOnTheHill
      @HomesteadersOnTheHill  Рік тому

      Thank you for the suggestions. Something I may look into down the road. Honestly, after 1-2 good rains our totes are completely full. I do have relief holes in top of the cap to allow water to come out when it is full and currently not able ti collect any if the excess water. Probably could make an overflow into another tote if I had more in the setup. Thanks for stopping by!

    • @andyanderson8296

      I purchased the Oatley Diverter but after looking at it, concluded, it collects only a percentage of the water. How can they call it a diverter. It is a 52% ? diverter?

    • @HomesteadersOnTheHill
      @HomesteadersOnTheHill  Рік тому

      On a other note, If all the rain went straight to the Tote then it would fill up in one rain event. In that scenario you would then be relieving the pressure from the top vent and everything would be pouring out of the top overflow and unless you are collecting all the excess, then I personally would just want to fill up at a steady pace instead of quickly overflowing out the top but again just as personal preference

    • @HomesteadersOnTheHill
      @HomesteadersOnTheHill  3 роки тому +1

      We rely on gravity and there isn't much pressure behind it when it comes out of the tote. As it enters the tote, the diverter design allows for water to come back up to the downspout and leave that way as well. It doesn't take very long at all to fill a tote up with 1 one good rain. I would recommend setting up a few of these if you had the money and room. Thanks for stopping by!

      No the design of the diverter allows rain flow to the totes as well as out the regular downspouts and I have to manually transfer water over to the next tote by gravity and a hose.

    I was going to ask about using dark paint instead of the plastic, would it really be easier? Does it peel easily? I live in a pretty windy state and wonder if the wind would whip the plastic around and eventually tear it. Do all of the IBC totes have a screw hole at the top and a spigot at the bottom? A friend has some I can get for free but I haven’t seen them yet. I’m planning on connecting two together. I’ve been planning on a rain harvesting system for way too long and it’s time! We get maybe 3 really good rains in the spring and I’m confident I can fill two. Summers are ridiculously dry here. This will be used for my vegetable garden! Thanks for your help

      If you wrap up your tote like a git and use the all weather duct tape you shouldn't have any problems. When you place the tote back in its cage its protected as well and we also have some extreme winds at our place as we are elevated compared to those around us and after year haven't had a single spot that is coming apart. I'm not sure how well the spray holds up or if its better and have heard it works well but we chose plastic and no particular reason other than its what we saw most people do when researching as well. Yes, connecting a few together would be great and I know ours is almost full after a few hours of good rain so yes something nice to collect if you're able to. Thanks for stopping by!

    • @HomesteadersOnTheHill

      I’m surprised in that it wouldn’t catch a lot of water in the setup. So far mine has done well a year into now I believe. 1 good heavy rain day and it’s pretty much full. I’ve added a second tote this spring to transfer the water from collection tote to a holding tank and we have been very pleased so far. Only thing I can say isn’t the greatest is the water pressure. One could always add a pump to the system but gravity is rather slow,but does work when dispensing the water through a hose

    I always question why people fill their rain barrels from the top like this. You could simply fill the tote from the bottom up using the outlet to fill and empty the tote. I.E Tee in the inlet to the outlet and have gravity fill the tote from the bottom up. Because your cap had a built in breather there was no need to install a breather line to let the pressure escape.

    • @spicano6309
      @spicano6309 2 роки тому +1

      Would not work filing from bottom; would require the total weight of the water (contained in the downspout) to be greater than what is currently in the tank for full IBC tank water fill. The downspout is narrow (e.g., 2"x3", by maybe 20 feet tall), while the IBC interior is approx 48"x40", by maybe 48" high). Ignoring height for the moment, the IBC interior area is [40/2] * [48/3] = 20*16 = 320 greater area than the downspout area. With an empty IBC tote, you would would get maybe 1/2" fill, above the inlet, before the downspout backs up, then into the gutter, and water falls over the roof line.

    • @spicano6309
      @spicano6309 2 роки тому

      Actually, this would indeed work (i.e., fill from bottom; ignore my first reply), as the pressure in all columns (all tanks connected in series) will be the same, in an "open" system. #1: Possibly one negative is that the lowest portion of the downspout needs to become pvc to withstand increase water pressure w/o any leaks or ridges in common gutter connections. #2: Another negative would be that fill-from-top could be 3" pvc (for attaining high capacity input fill during a heavy rainstorm) while fill-from-bottom is typically 2" pvc (primary use for slower output control). So there is a burst-mode transitory advantage for fill-from-top. #3: Top-fill gives you low pressure fittings, so can insert filters along the way, without pvc glue, for easy cleaning. With fill-from bottom, you may need to introduce some unions along the path for cleanouts? I believe all these small advantages (plus others) of the entire system is why fill-from top is widely accepted.
