Thanks Jess! Yes, pricky pears are on the mind as I'm wanting to make a big batch of Jelly this year... since the prickly pear picking video is already made that is! Natural progression is for the jelly video... you game? joe
Quick, cheap and easy. Well done Joe. I must admit that I was suitably impressed by your illustration skills, and especially loved the details of the red prickly pears at the bottom of the illustration. Stay well. Charl
Thanks Charl! This illustration was fun... but it's hard to do it quickly without using up too much hard drive space. That's why I keep it simple... I enjoy a pencil and paper more but it doesn't show up on camera as well;) Joe
I love this! Born and raised in the city my soul has always yearned to a more simple life closer to nature. I love your videos. Thank you! Hugs from Miami =)
Thanks AS! sorry for the super slow response... I normally like to be more on top of it, but I've been tackling rainwater projects as the rain has been falling:) Anyways, so cool to hear from Miami! Hugs back to you from AZ! Joe
Thanks so much Fadsad! So far it's working well... just got about 3" of rain and it's all overflowing now! Planning another one on the back side of the property now:) btw... sorry for the super slow response... I always love hearing from you and appreciate your comments:) Joe
This is genius. I've got lots of ground not growing anything. If I could convert it into water collection that would be great. Thanks for demonstrating how it works.
Great idea! I bet that tarp will hold up for quite some time. You could always lay some boards down in there with the rocks if the wind gets bad. Cool video dude!
Thanks Kevoh! I actually plan to get some clean gravel like pea or decomposed granite to put over it to help aid in sun exposure and blend it in a bit too:) But the boards with the rocks would probably do a much better job of holding it down in the interim! great idea:) Joe
Great idea and execution. I absolutely love those vinyl billboard signs. I have a source less than a mile from me for $10 ea. I've used them to enclose my carport.
I really love your videos you are very clear on what to do how to do it and when to do it. I really don’t understand how water can run in a tube down the hill and then go up the side of a holding tank and over and then dropping in without a pump being involved can you explain that to me lol.
Crazy awesome! I have spring water my plants don't seem to like (boron?), so may do this. Already have two 5000 gallon water tanks, so no problem with storage.
Great project and very simple. I suggest a screen over the IBC opening to prevent mosquito breeding. And if you plan to make it potable, then a first flush diverter would be helpful.
I am not sure how my suburban neighbors would feel seeing a huge tarp in the middle of my yard but this is a great simple way to prevent runoff water from my driveway. I am going it a try. Thank you for sharing.
Great idea. Love how there are soo many different ways to get to the same objectives. Thanks for sharing your project with us, I am sure it will def get used by many.
Thanks so much Dillbone34! I appreciate it a lot.. thanks for watching and the nice words too:) btw... I just posted the update to this video today:) joe
Thanks Jason! It's pretty darn simple and without the ibc tote could be made REALLY cheap...like basically only the price of the tarp(mine was $20 on craigslist)... and a little labor to dig a hole for the holding area! thanks for watching! Joe
Greetings. Not sure if your ingenuity is better or your drawing...both pretty cool. I like your ideas and simplicity. Even though this video is a couple of years ago...still relevant. Enjoyed, thank you.
Hey Joe, great way to set up a rain catchment. I was thinking about something like this on our property in Northern Nevada. Might need to put something like this up there and see what I can catch. Thanks for the video - Jeff
hahaha... the last couple I bought had beer logos on them....and I figured that was the most recognizable thing that people would identify with a tarp:) ... but the carquest had to do this time..lol!
Such a good idea Joe! I'm planning on building a large open air shed/barn/community center on our property and was worried I wouldn't have enough catchment roof to fill up the tanks. This would be an excellent way of adding some extra catchment area for a small investment :)
That’s really really cool. I guess you could cover the tarp with lots of round rocks to make it blend in more into your environment. I don’t think that would make the collection less efficient . Again, very cool !!
Great idea! I had the Watershed Management people out to my property and I asked them about collecting on a slope but they said it wasn't practical so I was trying to figure out how to add more expensive roof/patio covers/carports, etc... But with a tarp I can see collecting from the ground could be successful. And I probably wouldn't have to leave the tarp out all year, just certain times of the year (so my neighbors won't get tired of looking at a tarp). Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for checking it out Daizy! Yes, its a great option and much cheaper than a second roof or carport, etc,. I plan on 'dressing' this up with some pea gravel or something like that to help it blend in as well as protect the tarp from the sun. But a temporary set up would be great too! btw.. I see you have a blog and are a desert rat too... gonna go check it out now... very cool:) Joe
+homesteadonomics , gravel is a great idea. I have 4 acres of desert with no water source other than the sky so I am bookmarking all of your water collection ideas. We just got gutters up on half the mobile home two weeks ago. I''m not living out there permanently yet so I have time to research and study the most cost-effective ideas like yours. Keep them coming!
Thanks so much! It's that time of year that us desert rats are just trying to collect as much as well can! I'm already planning one on the back side of the property for deer and other game;) Joe
you have started a movement! Two of the Billboards on I75 South in Detroit Michigan is advertising Bill boards as "yard cloth" then directing you to a website.
I'm going to have to do something for sure... not sure it I want to paint it or wrap it... I've seen some cool ideas. Maybe a pallet board exterior cladding... would look cool too! ... but a lot of breaking down pallets...ugh...lol! thanks for watching! Joe
Thanks Mirza! Will do! I'm actually planning another one of these on the back side of my property now.... oh yes, and I just posted an update to this video with rain footage included:) joe
I have fantasies that a version of this on a much, much larger scale could be used for catching rain and filling tanker trucks for farmers who are losing their crops to drought. I believe that farmers who already have sodden fields would pay to have rain caught by large suspended plastic sheets over their fields when storms come through, and farmers on the receiving end would pay to have the filled trucks come and flood their fields. Win-win.
10* !!!! Not wanting to steal your thunder. Tyvek housewrap moisture barrier (tyvek name up, outside water barrier for house, like gore tex). 9 x 150 foot long (Home Depot $165). Very lightweight and durable. Same for using at night time for morning dew capture. 9 sq ft = 1# weight. Total roll weight
some simple screens on the gutters has been enough of a filter for me, im a suburban food forest grower and am draining 900 gallons directily into suburban swales.
Hi Mark, I actually live off of rainwater for my primary water source (house, cooking, drinking, bathing, washing).... planning a video soon about just that, so stay tuned as I'll be talking about how we filter water for home use too... but here's the quick answer, we use a Berkey Ceramic water filter for drinking and cooking and the rest of the use is just a very small treatment of bleach and sediment settling before pumping into the final storage tanks:) Joe
Thanks Henry! Yes, some areas have received good rain so far... but unfortunately my house has been missed by the majority of it... this week is supposed to be good though! Joe
neat idea.here are my predictions. #1 ) berm at drain is too low, rain tops the berm and much is lost to overflow. #2) drain pipe is too small, making #1 worse #3) it works ! water from rain is caught and stored. #4) screens are added to prevent bugs
Just an idea to make it cheaper maybe. You could just leave out a coren of the berm at the low point and stick the end of a hose there with a sandbag on top of it to close up the missing corner of the berm and make a water tight seal around the hose. You wouldn't have to put a hole in your tarp or water seal the hole. Instead of back filling the edges of the tarp with dirt, you could use short sections of 2x4 to weigh down the edges to keep out the wind. I think that would make the tarp more 'deploy-able' in rainy weather. Fold up the tarp and store it for the dry season, and deploy it quickly when rain is coming.
have You thought about building a small she'd over the totes to keep sunlight off the totes to prevent alge growth and have thought about expanding the number of tarps and totes
I plan to cover them with either a structure or paint but so far I just have them sitting... but it is in the plans for sure:) As for expanding.. yes, I have another on the back side of the property too... feeding a couple barrels for wildlife water:)
Thanks Ian! Yes, my sister lives up there and I was so hoping we'd get some of it... but finally we did, the last few days have been awesome! This IBC tote is filled up and has been overflowing for the last few days!! Got the update video up just a few hours ago:) Joe
Question 🙋🏼♂️ : Why you have added elbow PVC at the bottom side of tank?? , ELBOWS greatly reduce the water pressure which will cases the feeding line before elbow to be full at first and then if the water net force surpass the gravity it will then drain into tank... And thus it won't be that much "Efficient". Instead, if you have buried the tank a quarter or so, so that the feeding line could directly drained into Tank.. That would be more efficient 😊. And as you have a steep landscape you can get an outlet from the tank underground part and will eventually get into air after some way.. Thanks ❤️
Thanks Jay! Yes, these last two months have been crazy with travel, work commitments and some other video commitments that I've been lagging a little. But hopefully I should be getting back on a more consistent upload schedule soon! I've got so many projects in my head... but just gotta weigh family time and work first.. then tackle em' when I have the chance:) Joe
I actually plan to put some sort of gravel to help protect the tarp against the sun... but probably no play ground as its a bit far from the house.... BUT that is a great idea for a dual purpose play area near the house.. .no weeds and a little extra water harvesting:) Joe
ok guy, our land may be very very flat, but YES, i COULD dig a hole... thank you so much and GOD BLESS! this is great, do you have an update for actual rain experience? SHALOM GOD BLESS
I has used, and still do, use Bill Board Tarps for many purposes and I highly recommend the use of Bill Board Tarps!!! The best place, in my opinion, to get your Billboard Tarp is from the supplier in Minneapolis, Minnesota. billboardtarps.com/all-products/ I have gotten many "tarps" from them in the past 10 years and they are a fantastic value for the money. A basic 14' x 48' BB tarp is about $40, BUT since they are heavy, they cost a bit to ship. About $30 shipping, to NC, by FedEx - BUT it's worth it! Trust me.
Here are a few tips to help you out. BB Tarps come in all different sizes, very small to HUGE!!! BB tarps are HEAVY DUTY and weigh a lot! Even the thinner versions. BB tarps are WATERPROOF, not "water resistant" like regular cheap tarps! BB tarps are UV protected, so no rotting like the blue and silver ones. BB tarps are 3 layers thick with the middle one being rip-stop, so no big tears. BB tarps come in various thicknesses, but the thinner 11 mil thickness will serve almost all needs. (11 mil thick = 9 to 11 ounces per sq. yard.) Most are black on one side with the advertisement on the other side. Some are white one one side also. Great for shelters, patio covers or anywhere you need more light transmission. You never know what the "advertisement" on the tarp will be. One time I got 2 that were ads for Crown Royal whiskey and sold 1 to someone else, that loved the look of the ad,for more than the 2 cost me, so I got mine for free! The used tarps have a "tubular sleeve" on all sides that can be used for securing the tarp with rope, tube, pipe, etc., should that be needed. New vinyl tarp material usually doesn't have the "sleeve" and this may suit your needs better than a used tarp. They last for years. I have some that have been doing various jobs for for years and are just like new. One covering an old Winnebago motor home has been up for 7 years through high winds, powerful thunderstorms, 6" of snow and it's still going strong! You can't go wrong for the money - an excellent value!
How does that little bit of water defy gravity and go up the vertical PVC pipe please? I must be missing something. Or is there that much water pressure from only a few gallons?
VERY cool! Just so I understand correctly. Because the collection tarp is at the same level as the top horizontal pipe that flows into the tank, it will flow vertically up that intake pipe?
Hi Travis, the drain at the lower corner of the collection tarp is actually higher that the level of the pipe that fills the IBC tank. So as long as the inlet pipe is 'higher' than the outlet pipe the water will flow out of the pipe. It's weird to envision at first but it's all about water pressure and the fact that water wants to be the same level as it self. So a lower outlet will always flow water out of it regardless of how the pipe is oriented in between the pipes (provided all the pipe is lower than the inlet) lol... I think I rambled a bit too much but I hope that kind of answer it:) Joe
I have a friend who’s been donating these commercial traps to villages in Africa for years now. If you’re still interested you can send me a direct message.
If you live near a metro area read the bottom of the billboards as you drive by (Adam's advertising, Lamar etc..) google search the company and give them a call to see if they sell the used tarps (and have recieved many new unused tarps). I have bought many from my local advertiser.
Simple ideas are often the best, great job
Thanks so much Ally!
Joe
Hey you guys thank you for taking the time to explain that water runs downhill you guys
Colorful tarp! Prickly pears on the cactus are a nice touch- clever! Extra water is always great! Nice vid, Joe!
Thanks Jess! Yes, pricky pears are on the mind as I'm wanting to make a big batch of Jelly this year... since the prickly pear picking video is already made that is! Natural progression is for the jelly video... you game?
joe
This makes my brain want to explode. Crazy how that little bit of water goes UP the pipe!
Creative, you are an amazing human. People think they have to spend millions on collecting water.
4:50 The fly is impressed with your rainwater collection system.

An amazing way to collect water am adding this method to my list. Thank you👏👍

Dang! $10 bucks is a great price! I'm planning on getting a few more just to have around
Joe
I would send you some but I think the shipping from Texas would be pretty expensive. What do you pay out there in AZ?
I really love your videos you are very clear on what to do how to do it and when to do it. I really don’t understand how water can run in a tube down the hill and then go up the side of a holding tank and over and then dropping in without a pump being involved can you explain that to me lol.
this is great! its been 5 years, have you had mosquito or algae problems with the tarp and/or the tote with this simple build?
Crazy awesome! I have spring water my plants don't seem to like (boron?), so may do this. Already have two 5000 gallon water tanks, so no problem with storage.

Glad you liked it Asi! Hopefully your neighbors won't care.... and if you start collecting a bit of water they may want to take part too:)
Joe
Terracing without a tarp might work too.
Great idea. Love how there are soo many different ways to get to the same objectives. Thanks for sharing your project with us, I am sure it will def get used by many.
Thanks OTGH! sorry for the super slow response... been up to my elbows in dirt work and been away from the computuer:)
joe
Awesome channel. Informative. Positive. Easy to watch and digest. Glad I found it.
Thanks so much Dillbone34! I appreciate it a lot.. thanks for watching and the nice words too:)
btw... I just posted the update to this video today:)
joe
Awesome idea!! Thanks for sharing. Perfect for prepped mindset too. Can do this as a fail safe for sure!!
Thanks Jason! It's pretty darn simple and without the ibc tote could be made REALLY cheap...like basically only the price of the tarp(mine was $20 on craigslist)... and a little labor to dig a hole for the holding area!
thanks for watching!
Joe
I plan on using the same concept with my concrete driveway.
Awesome as always-!! Thank you for sharing-!!
Thanks so much Dottie! sorry for the slow response:)
Joe
Fabulous. Followed your plan and now I have water. Wish I could send you a picture!!
Great idea!
This guy is a genius-you should check out his other videos:)
Greetings.
Not sure if your ingenuity is better or your drawing...both pretty cool.
I like your ideas and simplicity.
Even though this video is a couple of years ago...still relevant.
Enjoyed, thank you.
Looks good! Works even better...:)....the rains last night filled up the tote quite abit! I'm impressed! Well done!
thanks mom:)
Hey Joe, great way to set up a rain catchment. I was thinking about something like this on our property in Northern Nevada. Might need to put something like this up there and see what I can catch. Thanks for the video - Jeff
Thanks so much Jeff! So far so good.. just posted an update to this with actual rain running into the system:)
Joe
very innovative, i was laughing at how simple and cost effective it is, but was left waiting for the beer tarp :)
hahaha... the last couple I bought had beer logos on them....and I figured that was the most recognizable thing that people would identify with a tarp:) ... but the carquest had to do this time..lol!
La mosca te has quitado protagonismo.
Gran vídeo.
Really useful !!
Thank you very much.
Simple and effective. 👍🏻
Always a new insight thanks buddy you are amazing
Brilliant and thanks it will work for me...
Ingenious ! I never thought about a tarp, I could throw one over the back of my garage and my rainwater won't have asphalt in it. 😃👍
Thanks M2C's! yep... couldn't hurt! Direct that water over into your goldfish/koi fish pond:)
Joe
Its really great idea. Thank you
Such a good idea Joe! I'm planning on building a large open air shed/barn/community center on our property and was worried I wouldn't have enough catchment roof to fill up the tanks. This would be an excellent way of adding some extra catchment area for a small investment :)
Thanks Derek! I had you guys in mind when I talked about this maybe being an option for tiny houses:) Can't wait to see your TH build too!
Joe
Life Inside A Box I just discovered this channel and thought I'ld point it out to you...
Excellent idea
That’s really really cool. I guess you could cover the tarp with lots of round rocks
to make it blend in more into your environment. I don’t think that would make
the collection less efficient . Again, very cool !!
Thanks Ashley! I actually plan to add some pea gravel for just that reason... and to make the tarp hold up to the sun a bit better:)
Great video....Thanks
Thanks so much Joe and Debbie!
Joe
Thanks brother for giving such a great idea , lots of love from INDIA
Really awesome video Bro.... I have learned a lot from your videos.... Thanks :)
I like it! I enjoy the simplicity of the few projects I've just begun watching. Subscribed tonight. : )
Great job . Have a nice sunday
Thanks Jan! You too sir:)
Joe
great video thank you for sharing take care
Thanks Daniel!
Joe
great idea thank uc
Very cool, and two thumbs up for those graphics.
Man that is awesome great job God bless buddy
Thanks CM! Much appreciated sir! I only regret not being able to find a coke tarp.. you wouldn't have any connections would you;)

We just got gutters up on half the mobile home two weeks ago. I''m not living out there permanently yet so I have time to research and study the most cost-effective ideas like yours. Keep them coming!
Cool simplicity, i would put water tank close to water collection area uphill, to use gravitation for irrigation and cut cost for white 100m pipe.
another great idea and another great video
Thanks so much! It's that time of year that us desert rats are just trying to collect as much as well can! I'm already planning one on the back side of the property for deer and other game;)
Joe
Excellent idea!, Great description!
Thanks so much Carl!
Joe
Brilliant mate.
that was very helpful, thank you!
you have started a movement! Two of the Billboards on I75 South in Detroit Michigan is advertising Bill boards as "yard cloth" then directing you to a website.
Good job brother..I have a property in Montello, Nevada..I'm learning a lot from you're vids..Gracias.Amigo
Love it!
excellent!
Awesome.Thanks
Thanks 1DAAT!

Thanks so much Charlie!
ps... sorry for the slow response sir:)
Joe
Brilliant!
thanks so much Sue!
Joe
I love it! Man truly amazing.
Thanks for checking it out JM! It has been a super successful project... considering the small amount of $ I have into it:)
Joe
hi joe
you might think about blacking the tote to keep algae down
love the vids keep em coming
john
I'm going to have to do something for sure... not sure it I want to paint it or wrap it... I've seen some cool ideas. Maybe a pallet board exterior cladding... would look cool too! ... but a lot of breaking down pallets...ugh...lol! thanks for watching!
Joe
j raner there many UA-cam vids on making pallet break down tools +Izzy Swan comes to mind off the top of my head
Awesome
Amaizing! thank you sr.!
I appreciate your efforts, I hope you continue for same
Thanks Mirza! Will do!
I'm actually planning another one of these on the back side of my property now.... oh yes, and I just posted an update to this video with rain footage included:)
joe
Great video as always Joe! Cheers!
Thanks CSB! Just posted the update today:)
Joe
Kudos! Doug and Stacy off grid linked us to you
Simple n effective
Awesome!
Thanks WTB! Literally looking out the window right now at some potential rain clouds... fingers crossed:)
will say a prayer!!
You're prayers were heard:) Last few days have been GREAT!

Thanks John, no thunder stolen:) That's a great point and tyvek is sure some cool stuff:)

Great video. you should do a video about how you can filter the rain water for house uses
some simple screens on the gutters has been enough of a filter for me, im a suburban food forest grower and am draining 900 gallons directily into suburban swales.

Cool! Great graphics.
Thanks so much Jeanette!
Joe
que maravilla amigo.
Thanks so much Homar!
Joe
Great vid! I think you're getting more rain this summer in Pima County than in greater Boston. Next week we have the UofA send off. Bear Down!!
Thanks Henry! Yes, some areas have received good rain so far... but unfortunately my house has been missed by the majority of it... this week is supposed to be good though!
Joe
Nice work
Thanks Max! Joe
Coolx i am gonna do that in mexico!
neat idea.here are my predictions.

Great idea! I'm sure you'll have some rain footage soon. We've been getting hammered up here in the valley with the monsoons lately.

Hey Joe, welcome back to the Internet :P All kidding aside, thank you for the new video! :D Hope all is well buddy! :)

Joe
+homesteadonomics I completely understand, no worries :) We appreciate any and all that you do. Looking forward to the next one. Take care my friend!
You should build your kids a playground on top of the tarp. Pea gravel and sand should be a good base.
I actually plan to put some sort of gravel to help protect the tarp against the sun... but probably no play ground as its a bit far from the house.... BUT that is a great idea for a dual purpose play area near the house.. .no weeds and a little extra water harvesting:)
Joe
Curious what psi was needed to overcome the height of the IBC tote?
What kind of connection do you use to get the pipe in through the tarp?
ok guy, our land may be very very flat, but YES, i COULD dig a hole... thank you so much and GOD BLESS! this is great, do you have an update for actual rain experience? SHALOM GOD BLESS
Lee Lawrence I think this should be it ua-cam.com/video/6ZUE-OKuxvA/v-deo.html

Here are a few tips to help you out.
BB Tarps come in all different sizes, very small to HUGE!!!
BB tarps are HEAVY DUTY and weigh a lot! Even the thinner versions.
BB tarps are WATERPROOF, not "water resistant" like regular cheap tarps!
BB tarps are UV protected, so no rotting like the blue and silver ones.
BB tarps are 3 layers thick with the middle one being rip-stop, so no big tears.
BB tarps come in various thicknesses, but the thinner 11 mil thickness will serve almost all needs. (11 mil thick = 9 to 11 ounces per sq. yard.)
Most are black on one side with the advertisement on the other side.
You can't go wrong for the money - an excellent value!
wow! that's a lot of great info BJ JB:) Thanks!
Joe
Hi Christophe.. I get mine from craigslist... but many folks get them direct from billboard companies too.
Joe
Where did you get the billboard signage?
How does that little bit of water defy gravity and go up the vertical PVC pipe please? I must be missing something. Or is there that much water pressure from only a few gallons?
be sure to also, put a screen over the top of the holding tank to keep debris from contaminating it.
Great point... I think I'm going to do that! Keep the little bugs and leaves out of it:)
Joe
Collect in an above ground pool for LARGE volume.
Amazing system! What did you use to hold the drain pipe in place against the tarp?
Thanks Charlotte, I used some vinyl caulking and then some silicone... but silicone would be all that you'd need:)
Joe
Cheaper than building a rain roof
Great Idea! Where do you get your IBC totes and your larger water storage containers. Are you located in Colorado and are you off grid? Thanks Vince
So a lower outlet will always flow water out of it regardless of how the pipe is oriented in between the pipes (provided all the pipe is lower than the inlet)
lol... I think I rambled a bit too much but I hope that kind of answer it:)
Joe
I think I get it, thanks for the explanation Joe
Can you tell us where we would look for the billboard tarps?
Thats exactly what I want to know. I have seen loads of folks on UA-cam use these but they NEVER say how they are getting them 😒
I have a friend who’s been donating these commercial traps to villages in Africa for years now. If you’re still interested you can send me a direct message.
If you live near a metro area read the bottom of the billboards as you drive by (Adam's advertising, Lamar etc..) google search the company and give them a call to see if they sell the used tarps (and have recieved many new unused tarps). I have bought many from my local advertiser.
super idea....plus I can finally find a use for those political party advertisements that I tear down when my party gets voted out....
