"Dentist" from Little Shop. Certainly there are two villains in that movie, and both have great songs. Steve Martin's performance of "Dentist" easily eclipses at least half the songs on this list for the embrace of pure villainy.
Yeah, I had to tell my mother the same thing once. Admittedly, she had a habit of falling asleep every time I tried to watch the film with her, until last year, when I finally got her to watch the whole thing. But the clue IS in the title.
I'm bummed that the 1999 version of Annie didn't even get an honorable mention. Kathy Bates, Kristin Chenowith, and Alan Cumming do an amazing rendition of "Easy Street". As well as Kathy Bate's version of "Little Girls".
Omg SO HAPPY FOR THE OLIVER MUSICAL MOVIE LOVE!! It’s one of my new favorite movies, saw it not too long ago & I always listen to the songs every once in a while! Reviewing the Situation is so deserved for this list! 🙌🙌
YES! One of the first movies my twin brother and I were taken to as kids by a brother 11 years older. After that, if we wouldn't behave, he'd say "I'm gonna break your Oliver! record!" 😂 Once he even put another album in the sleeve, pulled it out and broke it over his knee! 😄 We both started crying! 😱😱😭😭 🤣
I always have a laugh at Rocky Horror; I played Riff Raff for performances and the guy playing Frank N Furter really got into character and at one point teasingly smacked me with a whip; fast forward about 4 years, I was at work and we had a new trainee and my acting experience came up in conversation, it was the same guy. All he said was "wait...that was you?!?" and we both bust out laughing and nobody else really knew why until we explained it. We became good friends
It’s not just the Nazis that used such intense nationalism when singing “Tomorrow Belongs to Me”. We see the same intensity on the faces of those singing La Marseilles in Casablanca. We understand the intensity of those singing La Marseille in Casablanca, particularly when you realise many in that scene were actual Franchised refugees from the Nazis. I make the point to show it is a matter of perspective- one man’s terrorist is any man’s patriot. Cabaret is set in 1929/30 before the Nazis had rose to power. It is an accurate reflection of the feelings of a certain proportion of Germans. It is showing how easy it is to appeal to patriotism and justifiable dissatisfaction with the ways things are going in a country, particularly economically (it was the Great Depression). It reflects how people’s dissatisfaction can be manipulated. Hitler was voted into power. But interestingly the other group, who were also gaining support electorally at the time were the Communists. The same was happening across Europe at the time - the parties representing the extremes were gaining support. It is also a lesson we need to remember to avoid what happened in the 1930s. Hating people because they have different perspectives from you is the thin edge of the wedge.
@@brianthomas2434 A loveable one, but yes, I'd say so. He murders Eddie and then serves him as a meal to his guests (so cannibalism too); he tricks both Brad and Janet into having sex with him; he takes control of Dr Scott's wheelchair (which is both ableist and elder abuse); he turns everyone into statues (which is arguably a form of assault); and he totally ruins his makeup at the end, which if it isn't a crime it should be! But yeah, also a tragic hero.
Singing Little Girls from Annie is the best song ever. Also, how many can relate with her? Cell Block Tango in Chicago is so catchy Tim Currey in and singing in The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the best thing ever done
All of Regina's songs from the Mean Girls musical are pure fire, especially "World Burn" and "Someone Gets Hurt." Renee Rapp has such a powerful voice.
12:00 is my favourite song in OLIVER! I've lost count how many times I've seen this film. I used to watch it at least once a week from the ages 6-10 years old. I still watch it every Christmas when it's on TV. Sweet Transvestite by Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter will always be the number one 'villain' song in my opinion. It's ICONIC!
I often have thought for my favorite "villain" piece, "Molasses To Rum" from the award wining show "1776". Sadly, it falls off the radar for some inexplicable reason.
We have a very loose definition of “villain” here, I think. I’ll give a couple examples. The Marley’s were villains in life, but their entire reason for being present is to urge Scrooge to change. Maybe not for the right reasons, but they are being helpful there. And Fagin… he’s a criminal, but not really a villain. Though he does it by teaching them to be criminals themselves, he’s caring for kids with nowhere else to go. We’ve seen the workhouse life. It’s no life at all. And given the way the system seems to work during that period, there’s no way for them to advance in the world. Oliver only got a good life in the end because his mother’s uncle turned out to be a kind, rich man. By and large, Fagin raised kind people. The exception, and the true villain of the film, is Bill. Fagin may not have been willing to risk his neck for Oliver in the same way as Nancy, but he was also trying to convince Bill not to hurt him. Hell, Nancy sings about the things people have to do to get by in life. Of all the adults Oliver knew in his short life, we can say Fagin and Nancy were the first (after his mother) to actually give a crap about him.
I have to admit I always see Oliver Twist as a sugared up version of a boy brothel, which was rife in Victorian times. It's sort of an elephant in the room once you think of it.
Meryl Streep nearly died after having an accident during filming. They were filming in the Bakery and she was leaping and jumping up on things. She leapt onto the table, caught her shoe in her dress and started to fall back headfirst towards this stone floor. Thankfully, Emily Blunt saved her.
MsMojo saying 'cocky dentist' as though being cocky is the dentist's worst trait. You know, worse than the fact that he breaks Audrey's arm and probably also sexually assaults her, not to mention all the stuff he does to his patients.
I agree, I just saw it for the first time last Saturday. I would never not laugh at it. I found that it existed when I got to where it was showing because I was told I was seeing Jesus Christ Superstar. Thankfully I was not disappointed by the comedic musical.
The current Cabaret productions rendition of “Tomorrow Belongs to Me” was one of the most haunting things I’ve ever experienced, it was so beautiful and so terrifying at the same time.
You clearly need to know the difference between antagonist and villain. Javert is the antagonist to Valjean, but he is NOT a villain. The Thenardiers are the real villains and even then the worst they do is desecrate corpses for monetary gain. One could argue that everyone is just morally gray, including Valjean Similarly, Fagin is not a villain. He's immoral, but Sykes is the bad guy of the story. I think Fagin even redeems himself by the end but Sykes is a murderer and kills Nancy. He also has his own song that coincidentally acts as a precursor to Gaston 30 years earlier, but strangely it was nowhere to be found here. Also, why the hell was Across the Universe on here? And no mention of either of Poor Jud Is dead? (Yes, I know Curly sings most of it but Jud has a role in it too and it's about him) Not including the title song from JC Superstar is also a glaring omission especially considering how mediocre a lot of the list is. Lola is also not the villain. She's forced to do work for Satan otherwise she spends eternity in hell, and ultimately makes that sacrifice when she realizes Joe isn't like everyone else.
Sorry, Alone in a Lonely Room is Jud's real song, and is wonderful. It also is a better fit of what I think of as a villain song. I think it highlights the villain's character so much better.
Is "Friends on the Other side" (Princess and the Frog) on the list and I just missed it? Also I know they had "Gaston", but "Mob song" from Beauty and the Beast is a great one too as far as villain songs go.
Absolutely brilliant putting Sweet Transvestite at the top of the list. I loved many of the show tunes here. Thanks for bringing back such happy memories!
You do realize that a couple of the songs here are from Disney films that never had an animated version, or if they did were completely different? Pete's Dragon was a Disney film from the 1970s, the 1997 version of Cinderella, was a Walt Disney Television production, but it originated from Rodgers and Hammerstein.
"Hey, Torquemada, whadaya say?" "I just got back from the auto de fe." "Auto de fe? What's an auto de fe?" "It's what you ought not do but ya do anyway!"
There are several songs from the Descendants movies. "What's My Name" and "It's Goin' Down" from Descendants 2 are very good. "Do What You Gotta Do" from Descendants 3 is awesome. But the top pick has to be "Queen of Mean", also from Descendants 3. (One could claim that "Rotten To The Core" and "Ways To Be Wicked" are villain songs .... except they are sung by the protagonists.) ;-)
In defense of the stepsisters in the Brandy/Whitney Houston version of Cinderella, they actually do get along with Cinderella. It pays respect to the original story where one of the stepsisters is kind to Cinderella while her sister and mother are cold and cruel. In this case, they're socially awkward and under pressure by their mother to correct their flaws to get married and join her in bullying Cinderella, but when it's just the three of them, they are nice to her
Honestly, I think that maybe an aspect of the original writing. The Brandy version was actually the third TV version of that show (iirc, it was actually written for TV). I remember watching the second one in a rebroadcast as a kid. I remember the step-sisters being sympathetic in that version as well.
I also think that the film is seriously flawed because of the singing being live. To me, it is a lost opportunity to make a great musical movie. Tom Hooper was not the best director, which was obvious when you saw Cats. Possibly the worst musical film ever made, but I thought it was a dreadful musical anyway.
I’m glad Cabaret was included it’s one of the most powerful songs in the film it makes you feel so uneasy like seeing an avalanche in the distance trouble is coming
In Labyrinth, the Goblin King only takes kids that are wished away, so he isn't really a true villain. Sarah is the one that wants rid of him and wishes him away. She is merely forced to show she wants him back rather than just handing the baby back to the girl who has been yelling at a baby for being a baby and her stepmother's disregard for Sarah's possessions as if the baby took her bear instead. She was being abusive. When he cries with the goblins, he gets cared for. I know one is meant to see Sarah as the hero, but she's no less a villain than Jareth. He's toxic toward her and Hoggle, and she's toxic to Toby. Thing is the challenge to rescue Toby is built on Sarah's mind meaning she got her fairy tale treatment so his could have been a role she gave him and not his true behavior.
You can count me as a fan of Russell Crowe’s singing voice - when you take into account that he has never done musicals let alone sung professionally, his singing doesn’t look so bad….speaking honestly and brutally: his singing is actually better than that of a few nowadays super famous pop star singers.
I actually didn’t expect Pretty Women to make the list, but to be in the Top 5, it really is an AWESOME song and performance from two great actors ❤️ my absolute favorite song from Sweeney Todd
“Tomorrow Belongs to Me” was not an entirely new composition for CABARET (movie nor show). It was a pastiche stitching together the music of a pre-existing German song with lyrics translated into English from another German song used as the official Hitler Youth anthem. The melody was taken from Friedrich Silcher’s “Lorelei” and the lyrics were taken from “Es zittern die morschen Knochen” by Hans Baumann.
Starting with The Phantom of the Opera, "Why so Silent?" before beginning the countdown. Nice! Marley and Marley. Stars. I want it now! Last Midnight. Cell Block Tango. I Put a Spell On You. Love these villain songs.
You left out: Roxanne from Moulin Rogue, Rizzo's ballad from Grease. Also, you picked the wrong songs! Sweeney Todd's best song is My Friends, Annie's best villain song is Easy Street.
"Those Were the Good Old Days" from Damn Yankees. That song is why Mr. Applegate is the real lead character from that show. Ray Walston did it best, but many others have had a lot of fun with it.

Cartoons not included, unfortunately.
Should be titled "musical numbers" not songs, because the number one villain song is probably The Imperial March.
"Dentist" from Little Shop. Certainly there are two villains in that movie, and both have great songs. Steve Martin's performance of "Dentist" easily eclipses at least half the songs on this list for the embrace of pure villainy.
Unfortunately, I can't think of that performance without Miriam Margolies bewildering against Steve Martin and Frank Oz....

Yh literally it’s Pete’s dragon
Tim Curry is apparently the king of movie villain songs! He was on here multiple times! 😂
Yeah, I saw "Professional Pirate" and thought, "Wait, they give that for Tim Curry and not Sweet Transvestite?" But then...
If they included cartoons, Toxic Love would also be a candidate.

They could have included Easy Street from Annie as well, he was Rooster the brother of the Orphanage lady.

i throw on this channel when i need ideas on what movie i should rewatch
Scott Pilgrim was the BEST!! An epic of epic epicness! At 57, I am hardly its target demographic, but I loved it
In Labyrinth, the Goblin King only takes kids that are wished away, so he isn't really a true villain.
I read that Michael Caine played his role as though the muppets were fellow thespians and Tim Curry played his as though he was one of the muppets.
Great songs!
I love that Tim Curry is on the list twice!
Be Prepared from the Lion King and Hellfire from the Hunchback of Notre Dame are also great villain songs.
It should be a crime that Hellfire isn't on this list.
We met Ron Moody so nice a true gentleman and talented
You can count me as a fan of Russell Crowe’s singing voice - when you take into account that he has never done musicals let alone sung professionally, his singing doesn’t look so bad….speaking honestly and brutally: his singing is actually better than that of a few nowadays super famous pop star singers.
Excuse me? 30 spots and you couldn’t fit in “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News” from The Wiz?
idk if I'd count Marley as a villain in A Christmas Carol ... as they are there to help warn Scrooge and set him on his path
half expected it’s good to be King to be on here. Nothing quite like Antonio Banderas singing as an evil king.
Jabear wasn’t a villain. If any Les miserables song belongs here its master of the house.
