Adding a second SSD to my ThinkPad T480s
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 вер 2023
- In this video I will install a second SSD into my Lenovo ThinkPad T480s and talk about what kind of SSD you need to add a second drive to your T480 or T480s.
note: remember to turn off the internal battery on bios

Super helpful video. Thank you
Thank you so much. You got a new subscriber.
Will it work with a 1 TB SSD or will be better a smaller one.
Hi and welcome, it should accept any size SSD.
Great video! So after ive installed both the new nvme and ram will i need to go back into bios once ive reconnected the power cable and starting it up again? Thanks again. Just got a mint t480s from Amazon and i want to beef it up. Cheers!
Hi, no, the battery will be enabled automatically after plugging in the power supply
@@yeoldestuff ok I figured, just double checking. Thanks so much.
Very Helpful, thank you. Liked and subscribed, sir.
Hello! Do these specifications also apply to the Thinkpad T470? Is it necessary to have an SSD with key B and M instead of just key M?
Hi, the T470 accepts only B or B+M-keyed SATA SSDs in the WWAN slot. An NVMe SSD would not work.
Great tutorial! I would like to know if is it possible to run an OS on that ssd or you just use as data storage?
Hi. Yes, it is possible to install an OS on the second SSD, you can choose which OS to boot by pressing F12 when the Lenovo logo appears on the screen.
Helpful video
Hi, does this process also applies to the T480s (type 20L7, 20L8) as mine is a 20L7, I have the regular 256gb SSD, looking to buy a 1TB.
Yes, mine is T480s 20L7
Thank you ;)
sorry for my grammar, you dont need to remove the battery (and bios procedure) to installing the additional ssd? or it is a must to do that procedure before adding additional ssd or adding additional ram or switching the main ssd?
thanks for the tutor
You need to do disable the battery in the BIOS every time you work on your laptop. Otherwise it's very easy to damage the motherboard.
@@yeoldestuff thank you for the answer
@@dhipra it is not a must. No need to do that, unless you are doing something like replacing screen, or soldering.
@@impact0r thank you sir
what is max NVMe/SATA port driver size for T480/T580? and secondary slot max storage ?
Both slots will take drives of any size
@@yeoldestuff 2TB or less?
@@2DAnimax 2TB, 4TB, you name it
@@yeoldestuff 4TB? sure?
@@2DAnimax NVMe specs place no limit on the capacity, and there are many reports of 4TB drives running perfectly fine in the T480/T480s. I don't believe that you would be able to find a B-keyed 4TB 2242 drive though, so the secondary drive will be limited by whatever you can find.
Hello! I have a question, will a coral ai accelerator fit in that slot instead of an SSD? I think they have some models that can fit into a WWAN slot, Thank you)
Sorry, I have no idea. I believe ThinkPads have some sort of whitelist in their firmware which disables devices that are not authorized by Lenovo
does thinkpad t470 also support second ssd like this? please reply.
You can use the WWAN slot to add a second SSD to the T470, but it should be SATA. It won't work with an NVMe drive.
is Transcend MTE400S M.2 2242 SSD NVMe DRAM 3D NAND flash, compatible for this lenovo t480 ?
No, it has only one key in the connector
@@yeoldestuffok, thanks a lot. i got problem to find product that compatible for this machine in my country...
Does thinkpad t490s also support second ssd like this? Reply, pleaaaasee...
I need more storage. Thx
It does not, unfortunately
@@yeoldestuff oh no, so i have to add external ssd
Великолепный акцент)))
which do u recomend, t480 or t480s
I prefer the T480s, it has better cooling and the chassis itself is metal. However, the T480 can take more RAM (64GB vs 40GB) and it has the dual battery system which many people prefer.

Nice Weekend November 2023
@@banphekohsamet2551 I looked at it online and it seems that the SN520 has both B and M keys in the connector, so it should (hopefully) work in your T480.
what the maximum size recommended?
Any size will work
...as long as the _physical_ size is M.2 2242 with B+M keying. Or get a 2230 M.2 M-key drive with a 2230 M -> 2242 M.2 B+M adaptor.

Link to buy SSD in WWAN slot?
I got mine on eBay. There are several suitable models, e.g. Toshiba BG3, Kioxia (Toshiba) BG4, WD SN520
👍👍👍
BTW .. Which Linux Distro is this?
Debian 12 with KDE Plasma
Will it work on T14?
No, the T490 and later models have locked WWAN slots
Just subscribed. When are you coming back?!
Thank you for subscribing. I plan to resume uploading videos in a month or two
@@yeoldestuff Looking forward to it.
