    The studies indicating that firstborn children are smarter contained a deep flaw. They did not control for the total number of children. There is a pretty strong correlation between number of siblings and intelligence, largely due to the correlation between parental IQ. More intelligent parents are less likely to have accidental children and are more likely to invest in making sure they have enough resources to properly raise their children before getting pregnant.
    The studies showing that the oldest children were smartest always counted an only child as the firstborn. When they reanalyze the same data counting birth order backwards from youngest to oldest, where an only child would instead count as the youngest, then the youngest children come out as smartest. The effect was actually slightly stronger that way.

    Grades don't matter, IQ's don't matter but the way we see the world is how intelligent we are.
    Edit: (what I meant was that grades do matter but not out of school. They don't because the grade or IQ doesn't make you who you are because it's just a way of looking at that you have potential for better things in life than just a grade or an IQ. That's telling you that you have areas you're really good at but will you use a grade or an IQ in the world? No because they're just letters or numbers defining who you are. They only tell you to be responsible with your grades with your own understanding of your learning capabilities. School's don't want students to make mistakes rather than perfect and perform the material they want you to overachiever. Schools or IQ'S are just another 16 personality test to make us more Artificially Intelligent.)

      Agreed. I did…ok in school and I hated tests. It’s frustrating how society rewards the “smarter” kids based on a letter or memorization. My grades also fell when I transferred during my 5th grade. I was so discouraged and everyone around looked down on me, like they say I'm weird and lonely. But I already passed that age/moment. I'm a lot better person now. Ever since my 5th grade when everyone was almost bullying and pressuring me, I always thought "maybe they'll change" (until I transferred again finally to a new school in my 10th grade and everyone treated me fairly and right, and I overheard that my classmates back in my previous school at the time felt guilt about their actions against me). I would also consider a sink or swim scenario when it comes to first born children. When you think about it the interaction between an eldest and the youngest, the youngest is often catered to more than the eldest was. Often you will have that child requested to entertain the younger child so they got to use their mind a little bit more to try to keep their younger siblings attention.
    As well more times than I care to say elder siblings tend to adopt more of a parental role, forcing them to mature faster than the younger siblings.
    I'm the youngest of four. By my time, I would say my mother had more given up and I was catered to very often. It was also the firstborn for my father so I have a mix of firstborn responsibility / expectation and the youngest child's persistent assistance.

    • @ElicrafteeGaming
      @ElicrafteeGaming 10 місяців тому

      I agree, I think it really just matters on the specific child but being an older sister, I definitely had to entertain my brother a lot more and helped out my mom a lot. But this very much caused my brother to retain his childhood and made him a lot more mentally stable than I am because of how much I and my parents helped him.

    I remember seeing somewhere that speech development in the second, third, etc. children in a family lags a bit behind that of the first born's because the older sibling is able to more or less translate for their younger siblings. I feel like that could also have an impact on their viewed intelligence since the first born has to learn to adapt and develop faster in order to communicate effectively from a younger age than their lil bro or sis.

    Hey everyone! I am actually a fairly high functioning Autistic. if you have any trouble with self-esteem about IQ, just know that just because someone may have a very high IQ doesn't make them better than you, nor the other way around.

      Thank you for this. When I was diagnosed with high-functioning autism relatively late in life, I felt horrible about it and the IQ score I was given at the time. But I'll gladly say now that IQ is nothing more than its own test. It's not how good you are, it's just an abstract score number. So, not necessarily deserving of such credit that one might think. And I've wound up doing a lot more than I thought at that time, simply by not giving such things so much credit that they don't deserve.

      Agreed, no one person may be valued over another, and it took me a while to understand why, but now with my own pride out of the way I realize that the only thing that separates the most intelligent man to walk the earth from a uneducated low-life is just a simple knowledge gap

    • @tea-chi9912

      Of course, you're very correct, but I believe IQ changes, because we learn more, and more, as we become smarter, our brain changes its structure, this is why Einsteins brain was shaped different. I'm oldest child. However, it wasn't the parenting that helped make me intelligent...directly. I was emotionally and mentally neglected by my parents. Their repeated 'advice' to go occupy myself sent me to my room. I would play by myself usually by reading. I was super great at reading because it was an escape from the mundane around me. At the age of 12 I got a little brother...and then I realized my life would have been very different and positive if I had only been a boy. Not all trauma is physical, and I learned quickly how screwed up my life was before my brother came along. Couch potato? Does 'bedridden' count? Swear? All the time. You should see my room! But I'm not a big doodler. I stay in my noisy, chaotic brain too much, along with my ADHD squirrels. At least I can assure myself that I'm smarter than my immediate family, even my little brother. He got a Masters in Accounting (boring!) while I got a Bachelors in Arts & Technology. I wanted to be a game designer/developer...video games. No creative person would want to be an accountant...unless the word 'Forensic' precedes it. That might be interesting. Unfortunately, my creative intelligence made it impossible for me to hold down a boring desk job, and now I'm on Disability for severe Depression. My degenerative back disorder keeps me from doing anything physical, hence the 'bedridden'. Now I have all the time in the world to overthink everything that pops into my head. But at least I'm assured that I'm the smartest person in my immediate family. 😁 Small victories. I'm also quite sarcastic and dry in my humor. Monty Python and British humor are to blame. I was definitely born in the wrong country.

    From my experience, physical activity is always a good way to clear my head. I'll hit the gym usually 5 to 6 times a week, and sometimes I'll incorporate running or playing sports. Every fall I'll go out hunting, which involves plenty of physical activity. As long as I keep that consistency, I can keep consistency with everything else in my life. That then enables me to think more critically and abstractly when it comes to solving a wide variety of problems. 🤘
