You must watch the video from the documentary The Last Waltz about the group The Band. The Band and The Staple Singers sing this song. It is a treat to watch.
Yes! I have the Last Waltz on DVD and the "Weight" is watched often. I get goose bumps several times from the various performances during the shared verses. I love the end when Mavis looks over to the Band guys and mouths "Beautiful!"
The Playing For Change videos are just sublime. Seeing all those incredible musicians from every corner of the globe, coming together in literal harmony -- it just makes my soul happy. One World!
YES - I discovered Playing for Change just a couple of years ago.. they are amazing! I contribute a negligible amount monthly.. and try to let others know about them... music.. around the world.. OMG what could be a better way to come together!
The guy at the start with the blue shirt is Robbie Robertson. He wrote The Weight and sang with The Band, who probably sang it first. I saw The Band sing this song live in 1969 at the Isle Of Wight Festival. Great times.
The Band used to play this song on they're repertoire. Robie Robertson(the blue shirt guy) was the main musician of the band called the Band. It recorded and was the Bob Dylan support band on TOUR late 70s. "The last waltz " they're goodbye concert/film directed by Martin Scorcese shows them on stage. ✌☯️ take care
Robbie was NOT the main musician in The Band. He claimed credit for all of the writing and collected the royalties and copyright fees. This is what eventually caused the breakup of the group when the rest of them realized the income difference between him and the others.
Omg… to see these diverse people of the world playing as one on this great song almost brings a tear. If you’re not feeling this you better check your pulse. What a wonderful world this could be!
Playing for Change is a non-profit organization that brings artists from around the world together to promote peace thru music and raise money for building art and music schools. The Weight was written and performed by the group The Band in 1968, Robbie Robertson was the man who wrote this, his son Sebastian was the producer for this video Ringo you of course know, the other principal players include Marcus King, an up-and-comer in Nashville, Congolese singer Mermans Mosengo, a regular contributor to PfC, John Cruz, a popular performer in Hawaii, Lukas Nelson, Willie Nelson's son, and Sherieta Lewis & Roselyn Williams, two longtime backup singers for Stephen and Damien Marley, that little shack they're singing in front of was Bob Marley's former home. Playing for Change is something of a rabbit hole, once you go down it you won't want to come back up. They got too many videos just like this you should see but I recommend their latest, When the Levee Breaks, a Led Zeppelin classic that features Zeppelin's bassist John Paul Jones
When people ask me what kind of music I like, I say good music. This song is a good example of that; part blues-rock, part country, a little gospel thrown in. Doesn't fit any category, but nearly everybody will like it for some reason. Keep checking with Playing for Change, Harri, a good mixture of styles and a positive message, what more can you ask for?
When people ask me what kind of music I play, I tell the kind with notes.😂 This goes back to when my son was 3, a waitress asked him what kind of ice cream would you like? He said the cold kind. HAHAHAH
Robbie Robertson, wrote original while lead singer and guitarist for "The Band". This version produced by his son you saw in "When The Levee Breaks", also Merman's from Congo played harmonica in that one. Playing for Change Project started as non profit raising money to build and support schools for the arts around the world. So successful they have expanded into other charities such as Environmental Justice They have entire African and latino series. Also Jamaican regaee funds going to International Red Cross effort to recover people considered missing under suspicious and violent circumstances. MORE PLEASE!
Um, Robbie was never lead singer for the Band. Vocal duties were shared between Levon Helm, Richard Manuel, and Rick Danko. Robbie did write all the Band's songs, though, which is why the Band never came up with another hit song after Robbie left.
Robbie wrote this song as a member of The Band. Ringo when he appeared The Last Waltz was pale and skin and bones soon after he got clean and sober and his body was able to recover
Hi Harri. The look on your faces will be Priceless..... "TIME HAS COME TODAY" - The Chambers Brothers. Album long version... PLEASE and Thank You. Have a Spectacular Day
I love this song. The Last Waltz. Check it out. The Band. Helpless is another of my favorite songs. Neil Young. Joni Mitchell. Bob Dylan. One thing I love about this version is they recorded it around the world. Each musician was at home.
The verse about "Crazy Chester" was sung by Lukas Nelson, son of country music icon Willie Nelson. Now you need to listen to the original version by The Band, as well as the version by The Band with The Staples Singers.
The Weight was done by The Band. Written by Robbie Robertson of The Band. He is the first guy after Ringo playing the guitar. There is a live version of this song with The Band & The Staple Singers but that is not the original. I love how this is done with people from all over the world.
Robbie and the Band supported Ronnie Hawkins in the late 50s-early 60s in Toronto as the Hawks, and Bob Dylan when he went electric, early-mid 60s, again in late 70s-early 80s (?). Robbie was the primary songwriter. How can one not adore Playing For Change? They knock it outta the park, every time.
First time I'd heard Playing for Change and I really enjoyed it. The original is a classic song, of course, and I never tire of hearing it. But the different instrumentation fitted in well and added something to it so I'm going to listen to it again. The Band were one of the great shambling bands of our time, any song by them is welcome.
This song was written by Robbie Robertson, inspired by the people The Band knew or met during their travels. The Band was, for a time, Bob Dylan's backing band, and were introduced as, the band. They ran with it and when the went out on their own again, they were, The Band. The Last Waltz is the greatest music documentary ever. Well, until Get Back perhaps. The original studio version of The Weight shows of Levon Helm's vocals, but The Last Waltz version is pure perfection.
For what it's worth, Rolling Stone magazine ranks this as the the number 58 song of all time. You need to check out Robbie Robertson's solo work. I would recommend "Broken Arrow", "Showdown at Big Sky", or "Somewhere Down the Crazy River".
love these videos -- it is a wonderful bunch of people that participate from all over the world. i will watch any that you post because i have watched most on my own and would like to hear others reactions. thanks for the reaction smiles and love
I love these “Playing for a Change” videos. You should check out Listen to the Music. So many great songs by so many talented artists all over the world. It’s a beautiful thing.
"The Weight" is an original song by the Canadian-American group the "Band" that was released in 1968. This is the music of my youth. This is a great rendition of the song & great collaboration by artists from around the world. Proves that Music is a universal language.
One of those singers is Lucas Nelson, who is Willie’s (Nelson) son! Check out the version of this song by “The Band” (the original artist) and “The Staples” it is a fantastic recording of this iconic song!
Robbie Robertson, who opened this song with Ringo, is the song writer and was with The Band on the original song. As noted elsewhere, you have to watch The Band perform this song with The Staple Singers on the Last Waltz. The Last Waltz was a movie documenting The Band's last performances together. They previously also backed Bob Dylan.
Paul McCartney sings a line of this in the Beatles' Hey Jude video. It's in the "na na na" fade out when they show the old guy with the flower in his ear.
I’lol check that one out! Everyone we are hanging out in Cuba, we annoy everyone by getting them to play Guantanamara it’s literally heard on every street corner in Havana and Matanzas
For a number of years, The Band was the back up band for Bob Dylan until they went out on their own. Robbie Robertson wrote this song. Lukas Nelson from Austin, Texas is Willie Nelson's son. You didn't seem to notice the various countries involved~??? This is a classic song, hugely popular and one helluva job of editing.
@@BobSoltis1 It was a little more complicated than that. They didn't tour together long but recorded in collaboration w/Dylan although most recordings went out under his name. They also got together again in '74 for a reunion tour.
@@BobSoltis1 I understand the difference. I merely meant that they weren't just a studio band, but collaborated on the songs and recordings. I wish you well.
YOU MUSE REACT TO THE BAND>>>>Canadiana meets Americana…They were back up for Dylan and were founded by the great Rocking Ronnie Hawkins in Toronto…Genius’s, pure genius. YOU MUST watch THE LAST WALTZ!
@HarriBest Reactions Your next Playing for Change reaction should be "Biko". Peter Gabriel, Yo Yo Ma and Anjelique Kidjo among a lot of street musicians. Ripple would be another great one.
You haven't reacted to The Weight from the Last Waltz? Why Not? Do it now! I do love this clip. It introduced me to Lukas Nelson (One of Willie's sons) and Larkin Poe...and I have enjoyed so much of their music since.
If you’re interested there are two videos about PFC recording that version of “The Weight”. Here’s the first one ua-cam.com/video/m7C6TlQC8Y8/v-deo.html
Yea, the band was THE BAND -- check them out ..... they grew out of musicians in a band that backed Bob Dylan up when he went electric..... they have QUITE a HISTORY - little background research NEVER hurts - But, NO - it wasn't a Blues delivery originally - pretty much like this
You must watch the video from the documentary The Last Waltz about the group The Band. The Band and The Staple Singers sing this song. It is a treat to watch.

I have to agree, this is a must see and hear.
I know Ringo sits in for some of the songs in The Last Waltz.
The whole movie is a must see!
A must see!!!

Yes--watch the video with The Band and The Staple Singers. You will not be disappointed (and Robbie Robertson hasn't changed much either).

The Weight is a great song by the BAND. They do an excellent job here. Many years ago Duane Allman convinced Aretha to do this tune. One of her best.

Playing for Change is a great collaboration. I love the kids in the one video covering Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World"
Yes, a great one. The world lost Grandpa Elliott last month. He sings in What a Wonderful World also.
@@kayh7982 I was wondering about him when this came up.
An incredible video. To coordinate the recordings themselves then to mix them so it sounds as if it was recorded in a studio is amazing!
"The Weight" was a song by The Band - a pioneering 60's Us band. They worked with Bob Dylan quite a bit.
One of those singers is Lucas Nelson, who is Willie’s (Nelson) son! Check out the version of this song by “The Band” (the original artist) and “The Staples” it is a fantastic recording of this iconic song!
I love Robbie’s smile at the end.
that blue and white shirt guy is John Cruz, a practitioner of Hawaiian music and culture

Jackpot Playing for Change has multiple videos and they are all great. All there proceeds go to keeping the arts in the classroom.
Really thought this was gonna be Ringo's The Weight of the World (which is a superb song btw).
The Band was Bob Dylan's touring band for a time in the mid 60s.
I just love the Playing for Change productions
They were also the final version of The Hawks from Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks weren't they and the band on The Basement Tapes?
Glad to see you react to this particular cover, but I think you should always listen to the original before you listen to a cover.
Incredible cover of this incredible song! Thanks Harri!!
Always tryin to think outside the box. Thanks Harri for this. A cover works or it doesn't the POC guys always make it work
This song was written by Robbie Robertson, who's featured in this video, & was originally recorded with his group, The Band.
Paul McCartney sings a line of this in the Beatles' Hey Jude video. It's in the "na na na" fade out when they show the old guy with the flower in his ear.
I'm addicted to playing for change videos. The "Walking Blues" cover of Robert Johnson's classic is my favorite.
Beautiful version of this classic. The "Playing for Change" edition of "Guantanamera" is at least as worth listening to.
I’lol check that one out! Everyone we are hanging out in Cuba, we annoy everyone by getting them to play Guantanamara it’s literally heard on every street corner in Havana and Matanzas
FYI, the Band backed Bob Dylan for a while.

Love PFC! This one & there is another with Kieth Richards are musts.
I was pleased to see Larkin Poe (around 1:35). For those who are unfamiliar with them, it's worth visiting their channel.
@HarriBest Reactions Your next Playing for Change reaction should be "Biko". Peter Gabriel, Yo Yo Ma and Anjelique Kidjo among a lot of street musicians. Ripple would be another great one.
Great song!!
these Playing for Change videos are amazing, thanks for continuing to choose them Harri!
I always thought that song was beautiful until the day is still is whoever sings it so take the Lord because the Lord is for free
One of my favorite renditions of this song is from the Bands Last Waltz with the Staple singers
They said they spent 6 months editing and the result is magical.
Robbie Robertson was a founding member of The Band.
