Shoutout to everybody old enough to remember what a physical “b-side” was.
I loved that part of the song. "Time to play 'B-sides'" sounds like 'besides' but means something special to people who remember 45s.
And I recall that this was a b-side song of another of their popular singles. I would have been so happy to buy this as a single, two great songs for the price of one!
I’m here!😂😂😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️❤️
I owned, and still have about thirty 45s. I listened to this song since 1980 or so. I had the Fire of Unknown Origin LP.
It literally until 2020 or so and watching the video to realize that it was "b-sides" rather than "besides".
I remember one time years ago I saw BOC playing this song and Buck Dharma stopped playing his guitar to mime turning a record over with his hands while he sang that line. I guess that even back then they knew that many people didn't understand what he was singing.
ME!!!
Brad is finally starting to get it! It's not about the genre it's about good music.
fuck yeah! it's all about good music! period!
Well, this genre is formulaic radio pop rock
Love Brad's breakdown of the lyrics.
Agree. He is catching on
@@jme808 he still likes his simplicity, but at least he is starting to just be in the moment and enjoy the music for what it is instead of trying to categorize it.
My 3-4 year old son used to sit in his car seat singing along with the chorus while it played on the radio around 2000-2001. 😊
My son would be about the same age, and he loved this one and would sing this along with Lenny Kravitz's " I want to get away",
The stories that flew around this bands songs were terrifying and love them all.
Blur Öyster Cult is THE most underrated band ever.
You guys gotta do more of them. "Dancing in the ruins", "Shooting shark"etc.
"Then came the last days of May" by Blue Oyster Cult...
Amazing song
Very weird to hear BOC called "Easy Listening", but I understand. They've a few other mellow songs. My favorite is "I love the Night", which leads to one category BOC belons to: Vampires before Goth was a thing;
Easy Listening... I'm laughing!
I don’t think Brad meant it that way. I think he was referring to how melodic it was and how it’s easy to listen to. It’s not an assault on the ears like some rock.
@@tomgorman748 Regardless of how he meant it, aside from about 1% of their songs, BOC would not be considered easy listening. I think it's humorous how hearing a BOC radio hit gives both Brad and Lex the impression that all of BOC's songs are like this when the reality couldn't be further away.
If they only knew what easy listening meant during BOC's heyday, lol
They were also doing zombies: "Joan Crawford".
BOC has so many fun, weird, and thought-provoking songs that it's hard to recommend just one or two for the next exploration. A few of my personal favorites include "The Marshal Plan", "The Red and The Black", and "Dominance and Submission". Have a Great Weekend, folks!
You have good taste and clearly not just a casual fan.
Another vote for 'Veteran of the Psychic Wars' as your next Blue Oyster Cult reaction. It's a... hell of a song.
This song is definitely one of those most iconic along with Black Blade!
Yes! I second this one!!!
Seconded
I've seen suns that were freezing and lives that were through - greatest line in rock history. I'm a sci-fi fanatic and this hits home in a big way. My favorite BOC song. Well done.
Here's a couple of words for the man who wrote those lines -- Mr. Richard Meltzer -- one of the original rock critics and the author of a shelf of books -- you could look it up. He's probably still drinking on the royalties from this song. A lifelong hero to me. R Meltzer!
The album that this song is from was recorded as a movie soundtrack. The group was asked to do one song for the animated film Heavy Metal, but after seeing an early cut of the film they wrote an entire album. The only song used for the film was the cut Veteran of the Psychic Wars. Which is a really good song and you should give it a listen.
They used to play this on the old rock stations and the girls would sing this to me. Great times.
The life on the road and thrill of being in a rock band or living life with passion. The "you" is their audience. "I've seen suns that were freezing and lives that were through" or "the stone not rolling gathers moss."
Great band, you should check out "Godzilla", "Astronomy", "Shooting Shark", "And Then Came The Last Days Of May"
they already did Godzilla ;)
Fun Fact , when B.O.C was really big, they missed playing small clubs, so they had there agent book them as "Soft White Underbelly" and people who show up expecting a some local generic band.. and get to see the BOC in some small bar ..
They played at a small club on the west side of Detroit that I used to frequent. Wouldn’t you know it, I didn’t go that night. Fml
Love your fun facts!!!
I saw them as SWU in the late 80s at a club in the Bay Area. I knew who they were. ;)
Try some "Godzilla," "Veteran of the Psychic Wars," "Career of Evil," or "Dominance and Submission" for heavier & darker BOC
"Career of Evil" gets little mention in Rock forums et al. but I feel it is one of the more important songs by the group as it kicks off one of the top Rock albums (Secret Treaties) of all time. Not to say it is the best song on the album but it is like a rudderless ship without it.
They reacted to Godzilla. They really liked it. That video should still be up.
ME262
I'm down with "Career Of Evil". Lyrics by Patti Smith BEFORE she made any records of her own. Kind of weird, thinking about a girl writing "I'd like to do it to your daughter on a dirt road."
Whenever I hear this band I think of their song Don't Fear the Reaper. That song has been in a lot of movies and TV series.
And "Godzilla" =)
I like this song more than "reaper"
I honestly prefer Both Godzilla and burnin' for you...but hey that's just my opinion
It's use in "The Stand" tv series set the tone for that show right away.
VETERAN OF A THOUSAND PSYCHIC WARS - live - great lesser known BOC song that was on the Heavy metal soundtrack... the poster for that is right behind me on the wall. The guitar solo a couple minutes in is absolutely legendary. Buck Dharma shows major chops - dude could shred. Gotta watch the live version.
After their cover of We Gotta Get Out of This Place, Veterans is my favourite BOC song, but you would only hear it on the FM dial, sucks that this song didn't get a bigger following.
I will.
This song was all over the radio back in the 80's. BOC were just basic rock & have such a deep catalog. They were around for decades & had tons of hits. Buck Dharma was underrated as a guitarist. Saw them 3x live & they always put on a great show. 🤟
This song is the "intro" to a mixed CD I made for a girlfriend I was dating in 2005...she loved it & would get a little giddy when this song came on & we were together. ❤
5:46 Blue Öyster Cult is Sci-fi, Horror and Cthulhu. The best songs and sounds that Blue Öyster Cult produced were from the first three albums.
When I think of BOC, Godzilla comes to mind. A blockbuster tune!! At 64 love that these 2 are open to different vibes of music. Rock on!! 🎸 🎶
58 here an I Totally Agree!! I Raised our 5 children to Love our Old School Music from the 60s to the 80s 🎸🤘🔥 and in turn they introduced me into the late 90s into the early 2000s! Not near as Good but I couldn't Live without AIC or Linkin Park, etc.!!! ❤️ #LoveMusic
Damn you both are a gift. Love the reactions and the total opposite (at times) opinions on music. I love how Brad is low key almost like a poker player.. and Lex is high key spilling her emotions and interpretations. I can't get over how genuine you both are and not trying to please the masses.. but instead you're who you are. Keep doing it!
Oh, Brad. This time you are absolutely speaking my language. Genre fluid, indeed!
The hippie-caravans of the late 60’s would’ve accepted Lex, with open arms….Lex, isn’t afraid to expose her “human-side”….She’s free from the trappings of society’s “mandates”…..Lex almost always “sees” a brighter side, to a dark condition….👏
Ahhh...the days of my youth. I was fortunate enough to have seen them on the "Black & Blue" tour with Black Sabbath on Oct. 17th 1980. (It was a birthday present to myself.) My favorite line; "Time everlasting, time to play B-sides"...is deeper than deep. Anyway...keep up the good work you crazy kids...love ya! 🤟😊
Blue oyster cult had its own sound: smooth hard rock.
Wow this one really brings back great memories as a kid back in the early 80s miss those days so much 🤔
The great thing about BOC is that they have such a varied catalog. If you want easy listening try "In Thee", or "I Love The Night". If you want a more classic rock / progressive sound there is "Burnin' For You", or "Don't Fear The Reaper", or "Shooting Shark", or "Perfect Water". If you want a heavier sound try "Heavy Metal (Black and Silver)", "Shadow Warrior", "I Am The One You Warned Me Of", or "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars", or the entire Imaginos album.
BOC used to perform in small clubs around LA in the late 70's - early 80's under the name Soft White Underbelly. Great club band.
Blue Oyster Cult (formed in 1971) often deals with the darker side of Science Fiction & Fantasy in their lyrics. They are described as being a Progressive Rock Band for Intelligent People. You will want to take a deeper dive into exploring their work from 1971 - 1981 (before their decline from line up changes).
Blue Oyster Cult is a very talented Rock band that knows how to structure their songs. On top of that, their lead guitarist is Buck Dharma.
It is rumored that Jimmy Page (of Led Zeppelin) was in awe and a little bit intimidated by two other guitarists. One being Buck Dharma, and the other was Martin Barre (of Jethro Tull).
Have always loved this song. They were amazing in concert.
Blue Oyster Cult's musicianship and lyricism was always top notch.
8:52 I wonder if Lex is talking about "playing to the band," where regular audience members don't get it but musicians who know about the technical aspects of music are impressed by what a particular musician is doing. There are some musicians who do crazy things with key changes and time signatures and such that make a song difficult to bop your head to but will make other musicians say, "man, how did he do that??? That's incredible!!!"
Check out "Death Valley Nights" for an even moodier, softer side to B.O.C., or "This Ain't The Summer Of Love" for heavier B.O.C.
Never heard BOC described as “Easy Listening”
No, there was a better way to phrase that.
Blue Oyster Cult "I Love The Night" & "This Ain't The Summer Of Love"..Both MUST HEAR.
You guys have come such a long way since you started this. Brad is actually beginning to make sense! 🙃BOC is what most would consider basic classic rock, but this particular song is a little more pop rock than classic rock, relatively speaking anyway.
The lyric "Time to play 'B' sides" refers to playing the less popular (non 'A') side of a 45 record.
Try "Veteran of the Psychic Wars", "Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll", "Dominance and Submission" by them. They have a very diverse sound going back to the early 70's. Maybe earlier but I always liked their sound.
Brad and Lex need to go way deep into the BOC rabbit hole. Totally different sound on those first few albums.
My hometown boys from Long Island. Saw them many times, whose singer/ lead guitarist here was the next town east of me. Buck Dharma!
Good band and song! Don't Fear The Reaper was the other popular hit I'm aware of. This was from 1981. "Take Me Away" and "I Love The Night" are some more from them.
I think you guys totally nailed it with your various comments about this song, it's all of those. I love how well the lyrics in a great with the song structure and the two are symbiotic oh, that's the art of writing a great song and arrangement. And yeah, I loved the reference to the famous Rolling Stone song in the second verse about time. Ain't no time on my side. The Rolling Stones song is, time is on my side. And it's got this insistence feeling of this guy is just on fire for this woman, burn out the day, burn out the night, I don't really care, I'll never have a home anyway and I'm just going to keep burning for you.
And they are definitely Rock but yeah voice record has always had that smooth quality about them but you have to understand, this was a very loud band. If you want to get the full effect, why something so smooth can still be Rock, crank it up to your ears bleed in headphones sometime and you still won't get the feeling of being at one of their shows. You can feel the subwoofers punching you in the chest and also they were known for their laser light shows, which was cutting edge technology at the time.
For something a little less smooth, and to me one of their greatest songs ever, check out Godzilla. It is so fun!
Music makes her happy, and that's awesome to see.
This song is from the '81 album FIRE OF THE UNKNOWN ORIGIN, it was the last BÖC album that was really great. Don't get me wrong, they still rock, but they were younger then
You're right.. BOC can be very smooth when they want to be.. " The Revenge Of the Vera Gemini ", "I Love the Night", "The Vigil", or "Tenderloin " are all pretty smooth. While "E.T.I.(Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)", "Astronomy", "Hot Rails To Hell", or "Black Blade" are definitely on the Heavy side..
This was my first concert I got to go to back in the 70s
The thing that attraced my brother Ray (aka "Wizard") to BOC back "in the olden days" was the twin-lead guitars of Eric Bloom and "Buck Dharma" (aka Donald Roeser). We were working out the guitars to "Reaper" when Ray was killed when a druk driver turned left in front of his motorcycle. Rush was our favourite but we loved bands that had that multiple lead guitar sound. "Hotel California" is one that we worked on one entire summer when we were at school (#GoDawgs #GoZags) -
Huh. That's how I lost a kneecap. Guess I lucked out.
Great perspective Brad. In the years listening to this I never really looked at it that way. Nice. This song for some reason makes the hairs on my arms stand up. Takes me back to many memories. Love it.
Curious, do yall know what he means when he says, "time to play B-sides"? In to olden days we had vinyl records or cassette tapes that you had to flip over to hear the tracks on the other side. A-side and B-side. Artists usually put their best tracks on the A-side so B-sides were more eclectic and less popular. So you could says that taking time to listen to B- sides was the old version of what yall are doing here and listening to music you're not so familiar with.
I don't know why but the bend and release notes at the end of each verse are just perfect.
I think you would like Veteran of psychic wars. If possible try the live version from extra terrestrial live
The definitive version for sure!
As usual, you two knock it out of the park. How about my favorite BOC song, GODZILLA!! You guys will love it and I think you'll both be laughing! There goes Tokyo!!
Blue Oyster Cult to me is classic rock.
I got a chance to hang with Joe Bouchard, the bassist on this track, a few years back. Nice dude.
Great band from New York. Old style rock and roll with super creativity. Unlike many bands - unique. You guys are very perceptive and enjoyable to hear speaking about this and other music.
Love it when that bridge or whatever kicks in "Burn out the day"
When it comes to classic rock I always think BOC has some of the best sound. And by the way when it comes to learning to play guitar. I wish you all the best. Take your time and really pay attention. You'll be fine.
Good 4 u two...BOC baby...im in my 50s and I swear I used to dream that young people in the future would research my era songs... its almost 40 years old song! Glad you two are digging it
Their older albums are incredible hard rock.
Their album from 2020 is pretty rockin too
@@Hartlor_Tayley Good to hear. If it is half as good as any of their first 6 or 7 then I'm sure I'll like it.
@@xaspirate8060 it’s really good.
went to hundreds of concerts in the 70s. BOC by far was the best live show. saw them at least a dozen times. at the end of show they all grabbed guitars and jammed out. they blew Pink Floyd and Zeppelin off the stage and that you would think would be impossible as their records beat everyone, but live it was BOC!
I saw blue oyster cult at a small bar at the Bridgeport airport in Stratford Connecticut
2:16 I have never heard Blue Öyster Cult described as easy listening.
You need to do some early BOC!! “Last Days Of May”,”Wings Wetted Down”,”Before The Kiss””Cities On Flames” such a great and Deep Rabbit Hole that is Terrific!!
Awesome Reaction as always!!
BOC's greatest period! Definitely not easy listening. They were, after all, a rather infamous biker band. The live album, On Your Feet, Or on Your Knees, captures their qualities best.
@@troypeake2573 most definitely!! I wore the live album out!!
Just wish Brad and Lex would listen to the earlier BOC to see if they are still easy listening!!
This fantastic song was put to good, suspenseful, creepy use in the 2010 horror movie "Let Me In" (Chloe Moretz as a chilling child vampire). A film equal parts surreal, brutal, tragic, and introspective, this BOC song was played over a stretched-out suspenseful part as a haunting contrast to what was happening on screen...excellent choice for an excellent film.
I only began to appreciate this song, and BOC's music overall, after learning guitar myself in my 20s. The main solo, and the shorter ones in between the final choruses, are simply awesome.
Thank you for sharing this with me 😊
Liked your breakdown of the lyrics Brad and Lex, I've been hearing this song my entire life but you gave me a new way to look at it. Or at least a way to express it better.
My favorite by BOC was a bit heavier with Cities On Flame (With Rock and Roll)
BÖC have done so many great songs, like. Then came the last days of may, Veteran of the Psychic Wars, Astronomy and M. E. 262
They have also done one of the best live albums, On your feets and on your knees
definitely recommand "Flaming Telepaths" from their 3d brilliant album Secret Treaties. Very different, more 70's hard prog style. "Astronomy" is of course another BOC gem from the same album. Hell, the last 3 songs from Secret Treaties are incredible!
and Flaming Telepaths is NOT easy listening. :) The entire Secret Treaties album is great!
Holy satanic hell, what did I say, the whole Secret Treaties album is incredible! (But Flaming Telepaths remains a MUST) ;)
7:45 "Musical poetry." As in, poetry can be in the music as well as the lyrics. Absolutely, Lex. I can get behind that!
I LOVE THIS SONG AND I LOVE BÖC! GREAT REACTION GUYS!
It's not what you would call easy listening, but it's a pretty smooth, laid back track for B.O.C. Easy listening is like a synonym for soft rock, or really light R&B.
I think they were meaning easy to listen to in the literal sense. No the genre of easy listening. That’s like elevator music
@@joenutz2738 I wasn't sure but I figured I would clarify anyway.
BOC is metal!
@@unclefido6484 Transmaniaconnnn M C!
@@hmpz36911 Rock on!
You nailed it at the end there. It's poetry set to music.
Easy listening? 🎶 nah. 😆 We considered them classic, hard rock back in the days. Some creepy vibes in a lot of their songs too And videos. Kind of original goth rock music. Check out "Godzilla" , "Don't Fear the Reaper", "Monsters", etc. True BTW Brad. 👍
Home in the valley…. Home in the city…. This goes on… the first song of your workout playlist!
Huge hit for them....huge MTV video hit too!
I saw Blue Öyster Cult in a small club in the late 90s. Buck Dharma tore it up...
BÖC - I LOVE THE NIGHT. Vampire love song...another great song by them.
ALOHA.. New GENRE!! "Island Rock". During the 70's a Tidal Wave of Music came over the Radio waves in Hawaii. CECILIO & KAPONO, KALAPANA, OLOMANA. Their Music still hits the radio waves today here in Hawaii. They sound like America and Seals & Crofts. You should React to them. They won't let you down. Mahalo!!!
These guys play at my mid state fair just about every year, I’ve seen em 5 times, they just jam and love what they do. Paso Robles,Ca hope to see them this year again. I’m 32 so they aren’t necessarily my generation but BOC is awesome
Why I love this channel is Brad and Lex compliment each other well. Their angles are usually so different that they sometimes surprise each other. Very intriguing and fun. Great stuff for this rabbit hole app.
Listen to "Cities On Flame (With Rock and Roll)" and you won't ever call Blue Oyster Cult "easy listening" again! It's far more in the vein of "Godzilla" than is this song.
or "Dominance/Submission"
I've seen suns that were freezing and lives that were thru.. ok I never read that B4. Glad you showed the lyrics. Lex made a great argument and almost got Brad to admit it's a great song. That was fun.
All I hear is “I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning a doob”
Thx! In the mid-70s they played in Norfolk. Incredible light show! At the time I thought boc was psychedelic! Genre means what family does this or that belong to. In hindsight I now see boc as popular music or “Pop!”
Then everything is Pop.
Check out BOC's Cities on Flame. I think y'all might like it. Stick with learning to play the guitar you got, you will never regret it.
This song was came out when I was like 15. The 60's 70's , 80' 90's were alot of fun... I can't stop watching your videos.. Another good song by these guys is, "Don't fear the reaper"..
That spoken word part at the end was great! Hilarious.
Thanks.
You guys will like the song Astronomy!!! Great band! Y’all rock too!! 🧡
Love this whole album!!!!!
One of my favorites
That instrumental where the lead guitar came in has like a Steely Dan vibe I never noticed that before huh
Check out Veteran of the Psychic Wars from the Heavy Metal Soundtrack.
Brad said something about playlists or just listen to the album. That's getting at it. Albums were constructed to fit together. Great albums fit best, best songs, best structure, best relationships or moods. Blue Oyster Agents of Fortune is a great album. I would suggest listening to more of it (eg Vera Gemini)
More great music you are on a roll ! Nice to see young people still like classics !
Buck Dharma is a great guitarist. Not only great solo's but they are soo smooth too.
Good song! I like how you guys keyed in on the opening lyrics like that. Quite observant ;o)
Great song and album... I grew up listening to this. Been a BOC fan forever.
