Sherlock - How Creative Transitions Improve Storytelling

- I tried to breakdown as many scenes as possible, even though the show is quite long. I hope you enjoy it, and learn something from it.
If you never heard about, this is the Nerdwritter:
• Sherlock: How To Film ...
In it you can see a breakdown from what probably is the best episode in the series. He has lots of other videos, so you should go and check it out.

This sherlock holmes series , just worth to watch for transitions !!
Not just the transitions. ;)
Kursad TV true.
Kursad TV totally! loved them too!
True.
Not just a transitions. Dont forget the story :)
Nice! Agree with you 100%. Sherlock is creative storytelling at its finest. How to tell a story we already know? How to engage audience in more than a mystery? How to engage audience into telling the story of solving a mystery.
Loved it. Cheers
Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment, I really apreciate it.
I just want to know: where did you find out about this video? I really enjoyed making this one, and it would be nice to share my content directly to the groups that like it too.
Thanks
Konrad Schmitz i know the question was not adresses to me but i just stumped on this video because of UA-cam recommended videos and i got to say i really appreciate your work put into this video and very informative and interwsting aproach. I'm definitely going to check your other videos.
Cheers, Adam
"All car scenes are taken from outside of the car when they discussed about case.."

Konrad Schmitz this was suggested by you tube.. great work man!😎
this is why i love bbc sherlock holmes.
nice video, im an editor tbh i didnt realize how detail they put into sherlock transition, probably because its just so pleasing for me to dive into the story and enjoying the show lol
Ukii Yuuki , Hi I would like to know how to get great sense of Editing as a director coz I'm very serious about becoming a film director... kindly share where to learn things...
Hey Ukii, May I know how did they edit the food plate sequence #4:09. Is it time lapse effect? But I am confused as the camera seems to be moving/sliding and how did they achieved the effects. Thankyou
@@rhamo100 i think it's more like an execution of a fast forward on a jump cuts edited footage
and the camera movement on the original footage probably sliding very slow that is why it does't feel that rough even after the jump cuts applied
result in a "violence" shot with a smooth camera movement
@@kannana5991 lot of edit, lot of watching.. by watching i mean every element in the footage that you are going to edit , The setting, The characters, their emotion, their eye, their movement.. if you want a book i recommend cutting rhythms by Karen Pearlman
Thank you for this very informative breakdown of the transitions used ☺️🙏🏻
can someone please advise me. is it true that video editing is all about transition and thats it! i do many nice transitions and i can consider myself a world class video editor. is it something like that
It's all about stories. Transition helps to connect clip A and clip B

You missed the transition effect used in last season. The one where he is with drug dealer in middle of street then to his room.
Shreyansh Jindal Yes indeed. I decided not t include that one, because it would take to long just to explaine it, and a guy that I respect a lot, already did it; you can see it in the "nerdwritter" channel. Please check it :D
This was extremely informative , as a teen who just loves binge watching shows , I never thought about the importance of transitions or other effects , it really changes my perspective and well , nothing can make me feel disappointed about Sherlock , it is the still one of the best TV series I've ever seen
This is how you analyse a movie!!! Not how we have done it in school...

Konrad Schmitz a friend of mine recommended it, so nothing you can about that, please don't go ahead and say: "share, like, subscribe" that makes every video seem unprofessional, if i know a guy who likes that stuff i'm gonna share great content anyway, hope i could help you
Nicolas Benzing thanks a lot for your reply. I agree and I'll try to make more like this soon.
Thus is why Sherlock Holmes makes the perfect Dr Strange
This is so great - it reminded me of a Nerdwriter breakdown!

Konrad Schmitz A bit late, but I'm a Nerdwriter fan and UA-cam popped this up in my feed today, as their algorithm likely determined this was compatible with my tastes, but not sure how common this automatic recommendation was in your view count. Thanks and keep up the good work.
I am a huge nerdwritter's fan as well. Thanks a lot for the reply, I love every word you guys write me.
Excellent analysis Konrad, worthy of Sherlock Holmes himself!
Wow I'm amazed to see you have so few subscribers. Maybe this video will blow up :D
Keep up the awesome work!
Radu the goat!!!
one of my favourite shows and i've never witnessed it like this. Thank you

Hey hi . U WILL NOT BELIEVE ME ! This lockdown made to watch many web series .. So came across Sherlock . At first I thought of the same thing as u did . The length of the episode. Eventhough I gave a try. And by the end I was more attracted to THE TRANSITIONS !! And from yesterday I was searching all over the net to learn about the transition ..and just now UA-cam brought me to Ur video. And it's wow !! U have upload it 3 yrs back and now am watching ...
Man it's such a blessing that you exist! I'm very into all the various methods of visual storytelling, film, design etc. and often my fascination with such details and craft seems misplaced as if I start rambling about it... well you know for sure what I mean :) I've been wanting to start writing or talking somewhere about it, because I couldn't find too many of these things well made and because it's good to channel the nerd I guess. But it's amazing and inspiring to see someone else with a broad view on visual communication and beyond visual, thanks for the effort you put into this!
Oni Berugu Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment, I really apreciate it.

Cool man, thanks for the response!
I've been binging videos about editing / post production and transitions in particular, and soon enough this video came as recommended - so I guess you're already doing it right with the tags and/or categories.
Good luck!
Oni Berugu , Hi I would like to know how to get great sense of Editing as a director coz I'm very serious about becoming a film director... kindly share where to learn things...
Kannan A on UA-cam it would be every frame a painting, nerdwriter and a few more; but mostly observe and notice what you like, understand what makes it so through analysis or emulation and mostly - practice, practice, practice. Really no other way than to see for yourself and get feedback of others. To most it should be seamless when they watch - in most cases if they can notice the transition then it’s not good.
I’ve spent countless hours editing commercials for advertising working quite simple transistions to near perfection; then I’d move on to more experimental and sometimes not seamless stuff. I’d recommend first practicing simple, getting confident with those.
Kannan A if you want some more specific practical tips dm me
yup. same thing happened to me. after the first episode i got hooked. i got *Sherlocked* .
I agree! sherlock is my absolute favorite show, and the transitions are truly amazing. My favorite is probably when he ducks down and it transitions to the car with the driver.
great job! just 20 seconds in I knew it was going to be good
omgzac Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment, I really apreciate it.

konradnoises not OP, but it showed up in my recommendations. I tend to watch the likes of EFAP, Nerdwriter, LFTS, etc. I also watch video essays about games sometimes, apart from a lot of tech and gaming content. I don't know if this helps, but I already typed it so...
i searched for sherlock holmes and your video showed up :)
amazing deduction! you are sherlock in this era!
When i watched this series i wasn't that big into transitions and cinematography. Now that I'm staring at cinematography and editing i can't wait to watch the whole series again.. Thank you for this video btw 🙏🏼
Thank you for supporting! I'm trying to post regularly, so please check my latest videos and let me know what you think.
Peace
I wanna rewatch Sherlock now just so I can pay attention to the transitions
I think another reason why I like watching it is because we CAN see Sherlock's thoughts it makes us feel as if we have deduced the same things as him and so we enjoy him explaining it to the other characters and what he has made of 'our' deductions
That's a really good point!
Yes! The transitions are a piece of art for itself, I'm always telling my friends that their transitions rock. Beautiful editing
Even a lay man like myself who knows nothing about transitioning and the skills required was completely smitten with it! Mu favourite transition is in S2 E1, when sherlock is seemingly thrown into bed directly from the crime scene. The bed moving upwards was just marvellous.
I should like to say, BBC sherlock is the best series ever produced till date :)
Great video!
It is great show indeed. Thank you for supporting! Please check my latest videos and let me know what you think.
Peace
So I watched this video a few years ago after I first watched the whole of the series, I then just now watched the whole series again and appreciated the transitions so much more and all in all I really enjoyed watching it again which was really down to this video. So thank you!
That's such an interesting story hahaha. Thanks for supporting me!
Is no one gonna talk about how beautiful this mans accent is. Great video by the way!
Your editing is so fun to watch
Awesomeeeeee, I always wondered Why I use to watch those Sherlock Holmes episode with such an attention even if they were so long. My mind loved those episodes. Now you just revealed those information. Once you learn something new, you automatically keep using that knowledge. Now I going to watch my favorite movies once again but now with lot of attention. To findout why I like them the most.
hi. new here and subscribed. Ive never thought about sherlock transitions before, now i get it why i used to enjoy that show. thank you for the breakdown. it was very useful
Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment, I really apreciate it.
I just want to know: where did you find out about this video? I really enjoyed making this one, and it would be nice to share my content directly to the groups that like it too.
Thanks
it was on my feed, so youtube suggested it to me. it happens that i'm teaching myself about video editing.
OK this is amazing! I've noticed how pleasant the transitions are and how much I like them, but I never quite understood why. Now I do. More people need to discover your channel, man.
All this time I am a sherlock fan but never realize all this transition. Thanks dude this is great
I was looking for the names of the transitions I want to use on a script I'm working on and I stumble upon this... which is just what I had in mind. This is brilliant! Genius!
The bed transition was actually done practically to my surprise. In the behind the scenes they showed this bed that is on a pneumatic system to push it up to vertical for that scene. Clever.
Hey I absolutely love this video, I’m a film and media student in college and I was really struggling with transitions but this really helped, i was researching videos explaining transitions and I came across this, so glad this is really good. Subscribed 😊😊
katharine kavanagh awesome to read this! Thanks a lot!
Much as there is reason to criticise season 4 of Sherlock, in terms of visual storytelling it's rly masterful
I know right!!!!! i was just mesmerized by each time by the transition. well, I'm gonna subscribe because the matter of "transition" is really lacking subject on the internet. Good content!
Mira Mineko Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment, I really apreciate it.

Excellent noises Konrad! Red button smashed
That awesome... going to watch the series just for this..!
Nicely put together konrad
Awesome analysis backed by succinct examples. I'll go and watch Sherlock now...
That was a very interesting video. Thank you!! That's one of the strenght of this serie. Now it's not gonna change my point of view on season 4, but honestly, they make a very great effort in the graphics and images, and I love that. Very satisfying.
You’re very articulate and analytical in the way you think and communicate information. I would watch these scenes and probably never give two cents to what just happened or why it did. Perhaps that’s the intention of the producers and editors to make it flow and be seamless for the viewers, but I thinks it’s more that I’m just not that deep. I’m simple.
Thank you for supporting! I'm trying to post regularly, so please check my latest videos and let me know what you think.

Excellent content! I am sure you will be one of the top youtubers real soon!!
Totally mesmerizing series for the quality and style of editing, photography and camera work, I've seen it all more than just once and I always learn something new every time I watch again. Absolute genius, although as you mentioned at one point, it can become too much at times.
Awesome video man. Transitions are my favorite thing to watch for in movies right now. I really like how you related this to story telling. It is way more than just a way in which to be artsy, it enhances the storyline. Awesome work!
This was awesome! I think you really hit it on the head with the entire series being filtered through John Watson's point of view as a storyteller. I think this will be further explored in the final series, whenever that happens!
I knew that SHERLOCK is a fascinating series, but this is such a fresh view. Thanks for this technical review!!!
god i love sherlock. Really love the transition breakdown you did. Made me realize a lot of things I didn't notice before
my favorite show!!! I've watched the whole series five times through haha. as a film student, it seriously excites me for the future.
This is my favorite show and somehow I never really took it and analysed it. I'm so glad someone made this video, there really are so many great and creative elements that make-up this incredible series.
Thank you for making time and working on it... and educating person like me...
A big thank you for breaking down these transitions.
the editing and sound effects is very well put. i didn't even notice that I'm about to finish another episode. that's how much I'm drawn to each episodes. besides the story, it really is the editing and all that makes it so much better and immersive
Oh my gosh I loved the series but I didn't even think about this stuff. I have to go watch series again now, but I'm not complaining. I'll love the show even more.
Omg I LOVE THIS VIDEO! It helped me so much understanding all the transitions. I think I'll include many of them in my videos! :)
Lulus Dreamtown , Hi I would like to know how to get great sense of Editing as a director coz I'm very serious about becoming a film director... kindly share where to learn things...
Ohh cool einen Kommentar von dir hier zu lesen 😄🙌
I have adored this show since I was very little. I recently finally got to go to London and visit the museum at 221b Baker Street and do all the touristy stuff. I am now a film major nearly a decade older than when I first found this amazing show. Stumbling across this random video when looking for transition ideas for a short film I was thinking about writing. These two parts of my life in context with each other made me fall in love with this show all over again. I know this is an older vid, but thank you for this!
awesome..i am also very impressed by the transitions sherlock series have shown..
Hmmm i can see your hard work in this one. Awesome man loved it!
Fantastic observations! Thank you for bringing it to light! This is the true art of "Digital" film making!!
I might have to watch Sherlock just to look out for all the transitions now lol
Thank you. That's exactly what I like Sherlock for!
Guys I don't know what to say! Over 100k views, this is amazing, and it happened so fast! Thanks a lot for watching it, and giving positive feedback.
Do you have any requests of series or movies breakdowns? I have some ideas and will soon be returning to my editing station, but I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks again, and keep making noises.
Konrad, just found this and loved it so much! :) Great job, such informative video and well made, thank you! :)
I love videos about filmmaking and also Sherlock. Guess that’s why it was suggested to me by UA-cam.
On another topic, você é brasileiro cara? Foi uma surpresa tão grande ao ver você cantando músicas em português. Por favor faça mais vídeos sobre filmes e séries! Essas análises são uma das melhores coisas pra se assistir no UA-cam!
Keep up the good work! And more filmmaking videos if you’re really into it!
Nícollas Dias sou sim, mas tento morar fora sempre que posso.
Thanks a lot for the feedback, I'll soon be back at my editing station and will share more content!

This brake down was awesome. Please make more like this one

This is awesome! And seeing the clips now bring feelings from watching the episodes. So dense production on many levels. TV is not stupid anymore. Anyway, in some comment you asked how this video was found. This has never happened before, but the two videos I've now watched in my current UA-cam watching session, both were something I haven't watched recently or won't usually search for. The first one was about making a robot to shoot you in the eye with laser. The common thing was "I don't usually do this kind of..." and that, after you said it in the end, felt quite bizarre and special! I just found these videos, not by searching anything, they were suggested. Thank you for magnificent breakdown! Great stuff.
Now I want to go back and watch the entire series again
this has been floating around my recommended for awhile and i'm glad i watched it! really informative and while i did notice some of the transitions in my initial viewing i feel like i didn't appreciate them enough, haha qvq i'll rewatch the series sometime!
Sherlocks transmission are just pure art
Yeah, the Pass by effect is pretty cool - simple but effective, nice video.
This reminds me of how much I love this series
I always enjoyed the aesthetics of the show but I never quite knew why. Now I know! Great video! I'll definitely be paying more attention to the transitions and sounds now when I rewatch it :D
Sherlock has beautiful framing of scenes.
100% true!
i love love love the way youve pointed out those amazing details..
Thank you for supporting! I'm trying to post regularly, so please check my latest videos and let me know what you think.
Peace
I loved the series. And I loved the transitions in the show. And you broke it down so well. Amazing job.
Whoa I didnt even really notice all these transitions. Thanks for breaking this down!
ugh. made me miss watching sherlock even more!
one of the reason I watch SH Series. Satisfying transition
Loved this! Thanks.
And that UA-cam's recommendation suddenly improved, I need to appreciate that too👧
Thank you for supporting! I'm trying to post regularly, so please check my latest videos and let me know what you think.

This is my very first comment on UA-cam. There are incredibly worthy videos across UA-cam that people often don't realize, and this is one such. You sir, have done an excellent job with this analysis and it'd be so wrong of me if I don't appreciate you for it or encourage you for the efforts you've put in.
This is quality work. Instead of just pinpointing subjective details, you've done an objective analysis as well, and that which I absolutely loved.
I also loved the fact that you wrote, "I hope you enjoy it and learn something from it"
I am fan of people who strive to learn something from everything, and this video is an amazing example.
Thanks for the time and the effort. Keep up the good work. I learnt and enjoyed as well. :-)
That sort of comment only gives me energy to do it again! I'm finishing another video this very moment, and will upload soon.
Thanks for the love!
This is a wonderful insight you are providing narrator.
Sherlock BBC is a good show..
Thank you so much I watched it several time to understand and see in what context they can be used. You broke the transitons amazingly.
Thank you for supporting! I'm trying to post regularly, so please check my latest videos and let me know what you think.
Peace
Thank you. I really enjoyed this. It was fun to think about the transitions in isolation. Of course, I've experienced them many times over, been guided by them, had my emotions stirred by them but I've never looked at them as a "thing". I will pay closer attention the next time I go though the series again.
Thanks for the video!! Definitely going to use these transition aspects in my upcoming Crime Drama!
Watching this series you will learn many kinds of technicalities from video and audio just pay attention in every details.
True
Hey man, this videos is very educative. I don't usually comment but this time you deserve it man. You've earned my subscription. Keep it up. I wish to see more of your videos like this one.
Really nice and informative video. I loved it! You see transitions all the time watching Sherlock but without really thinking about them. Learned a lot off your video. Thank you
OMG! THANK YOU so much that I found that video. It's informative and juicy and helped me out a lot to learn more about transitions and how to use them! ♥
Thank you for supporting! I'm trying to post regularly, so please check my latest videos and let me know what you think.

I dont know why this is in my suggested video list. But this is good.
I looooved how you broke down sherlock's transitions. It was amazing
Klair Jimenez Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment, I really apreciate it.

Thanks
Konrad Schmitz your effort into making this video deserves appreciation! I think it was in my recommended? I love sherlock and your thumbnail and title got my attention so I clicked on it 😊
Superb Konrad!- well done loved your item. Great ideas for frustrated film directors...
Oh my gosh I was so much into the storyline I never noticed the transitions lol
Finally someone can explain this to me. I alr noticed it at the beginning but i couldn't find a way to tell or explain to myself how did they do it. Thank you
After watching your video, I really want to see the Sherlock Holmes series! Thanks!
This is brilliantly put together. Thanks you for taking the time to do this :D
Fascinating & detailed breakdown. Thoughtfully written & presented. Thank you.
I love the Sherlock series. Enjoyed every minute!
Well I also finished watching Sherlock and I am not disappointed a bit. This show is more above than just transition effects. Effects made these series cooler but just effects aren't the only reason that this show gained so much popularity. Great actors, great screenplay, awesome cinematography, great writing all that combines to make a great show and Sherlock series has it all. If you or anyone calls effects are the only reason people watch this then you should check the critics about the Final Problem episode 03 of Season 4, people were quite disappointed with the story but vfx were great.
ugh yes. even just watching this video is so pretty.
