    My favorite sequence in a Sherlock episode is when he was shot and has to decide whether to fall forward or backwards, then the viewer is taken thru the stages of what it's like to have been shot.

      The scene is nicely done, but there's one thing very annoying, that ruins it for me. There's litterally no point in deducing if the bullet passed through. If it didn't, yes it's good to fall backwards, but if it did, doesn't really matter what you choose, so he might as well fall backwards anyway.

      @@LechuvPL Found this after googling (which you should do if you have questions or think something is illogical): "Exit wounds tend to be larger than entry wounds. That being the case, if you have to have one or the other wound pointing down, with gravity draining blood from the body, you want it to be the smaller wound. So, if there had been an exit wound, you would want to fall forward. Since there was no exit wound, the only one he had to worry about was the entry wound, hence his decision to fall backwards." Sounds reasonable to me, hbu?

I know it's not very "business", but some more Sherlock analyses would be awesome, in particular his "mind pallette", like in the wedding episode and when Mary shoots him. This is already quite a bit like that, but a more deconstructed version of that if you will.

      +Salty Taco they both give you physical, and generally shitty withdrawals and therefore they both work for the plot device. But that aside in my personal opinion I think the show only depicts him as doing heroin. Coke gets you super up and stimulated, and I don't remember any scenes where he was very stimulated seeming when he was apparently on drugs. Also just seeing the drug den at the beginning of season 3 I think it is; it's a total opium den everyone is just laying there, and when they woke him up he just seemed high on some opioid, very relaxed, and spacey.

    The moment Sherlock realizes there is a murderer at the wedding is, without a doubt, the most achieved and better realized moment in that show. You see how Sherlock goes from nothing to "Someone will die at this wedding and I know who will" in a matter of minutes.

      Yes! They tried to be too clever with the writing previous episode! I really didn't buy the Mary/Spy story. It was too convoluted as a plot. And the scenes in I guess India felt like a massive detour. It is nice to see another location but it all felt so unecissary. They should've stayed in London. Although that was not the biggest problem with the episode. And Mary's death scene was the stupidest and most easilly avoided death ever. I get what they were trying to do, trying to show how overly cocky Sherlock has gotten. But I really don't buy that the whole police force, Watson, Mary who is a intelligent spy and Mycroft and his national security team just stood there and let the Norbury just stand there with a gun and all.

      1. Sherrinford puzzles ended up being so cheesy, think of Eurus installing flat screen TVs in a bunch of interconnected rooms so she can use them to terrorize her brothers later
      2. And who was there dropping the strung up men from the ropes when Eurus pushed her little buttons anyways?
      3. Imagine Eurus ordering a custom engraved Molly-sized coffin on ebay, and then installing a camera in her flat
      4. Imagine Eurus loading the three men's unconscious bodies into a chopper and flying them over to the burnt down Holmes estate, chaining John to the bottom of a well, installing more flatscreen TVs, making sure John and Sherlock both have their ear mics in
      5. Imagine Eurus then going up to her room to wait for that hug she's wanted for 20 years
      6. Imagine Mary before her death trying to figure out how to time her posthumous DVD delivers perfectly

      Don't worry, just piling up original gimmicks is not the same as creating a good movie. This is why a movie like Fight Club, as fancy as it seemed in the beginning, did not mature very well.
      Also keep in mind that the main thing Sherlock shows is how original its creators are. The early episodes were about telling the Holmes stories in a modern way, but not anymore... So maybe a less original idea which expresses more clearly the point you have (and of course: having a point at all) can be the better solution for a movie than the perfect three minutes of visual wankery.

      Sergeant Pickles When a guy says that a basic shot-reverse shot followed by a piece of cloth falling at the back of the screen is "the best leapfrog transition of all time" then you know something's wrong. I don't understand how people fall for such artificial devices such as those used in both the Sherlock series and this video.
      I like some of the nerdwriter's videos, and I consider some of them to be actually great. But, as a rule, half of them or more are just pretentiously delivered bullshit. But I guess that's what happens when you give yourself only one week (or in this case, two days) to write and edit a video essay.

    The stories behind every new episode become more and more unreal. Same with the characters' motivation. Like to get Watson back Holmes did drugs, trapped himself into the killer's hands just to be saved by Watson in the very last moment, relied on Watson's predictivity to get that mic... And these are just some of many. You really say wow by looking at great visual solutions, but then again you've got a sour feeling that overall it's a BS.

      Same here, I thought this last season was really the last straw. Problem with Moffat, as always -- does great individual episodes (like Blink, and a Study in Pink), but when he tries going for all-encompassing story arcs it's just a major disaster. Every. single. time.

    I'll just place that famous 4chan critique of Sherlock here just in case it hasn't been brought up:
    (Sherlock wasn't a good show) Because it has smart characters written stupidly.
    Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men is a smartly written smart character. When Chigurh kills a hotel room full of three people he books to room next door so he can examine it, finding which walls he can shoot through, where the light switch is, what sort of cover is there etc. This is a smart thing to do because Chigurh is a smart person who is written by another smart person who understands how smart people think.
    Were Sherlock Holmes to kill a hotel room full of three people. He'd enter using a secret door in the hotel that he read about in a book ten years ago. He'd throw peanuts at one guy causing him to go into anaphylactic shock, as he had deduced from a dartboard with a picture of George Washington carver on it pinned to the wall that the man had a severe peanut allergy. The second man would then kill himself just according to plan as Sherlock had earlier deduced that him and the first man were homosexual lovers who couldn't live without eachother due to a faint scent of penis on each man's breath and a slight dilation of their pupils whenever they looked at each other. As for the third man, why Sherlock doesn't kill him at all. The third man removes his sunglasses and wig to reveal he actually WAS Sherlock the entire time. But Sherlock just entered through the Secret door and killed two people, how can there be two of him? The first Sherlock removes his mask to reveal he's actually Moriarty attempting to frame Sherlock for two murders. Sherlock however anticipated this, the two dead men stand up, they're undercover police officers, it was all a ruse. "But Sherlock!" Moriarty cries "That police officer blew his own head off, look at it, there's skull fragments on the wall, how is he fine now? How did you fake that?". Sherlock just winks at the screen, the end.
    This is retarded because Sherlock is a smart person written by a stupid person to whom smart people are indistinguishable from wizards.

    • @Lily.valkyrie
      @Lily.valkyrie 8 років тому +42

      amazing. Well, I guess not really amazing, because being smart isnt, really. the thought the person put into this is good, but you have to remember, the majority of the world is stupid. Thats why bad tv shows and bad movies are hugely popular and get famous and large credit. I think moffat and gattiss know that, so they only add a smidgen of Sherlocks true brilliance, because, lets be honest... they wouldnt get as much attention if they made facts and sherlock's intelliegence the main interest of the series. people wouldnt watch it and they wouldnt have money left. There are no limits for Sherlock, but there are for BBC. Ive never heard of the show "No Country for Old Men" before- Im guessing thats because its not exactly popular.

    • @DejectedCat
      @DejectedCat 8 років тому +75

      "No Country for Old Men" is a 2007 movie based on the book of the same name, directed by the Coen brothers. Wisecrack did a Thug Notes episode on the book. • @nano7586
      @nano7586 7 років тому +46

      I totally agree with what +danshyu wrote. This is basically why I don't like the series that much. All these "smartness" actions are just totally invented out of nothing in a very cringy way. It is just lacking in realism so much that it could be considered a superhero tale. Smart persons aren't people who scan their surroundings like a scanner or some shit, they think throughly about how to act with little information they have.
      Nevertheless, and the same applies to Dr. House (very similar just a little bit more realistic), in order to like this series you have to get rid of your smartassness for a second and just enjoy as the storyline proceeds. You have to fully ignore your cognitive dissonance if you want to enjoy more things in life. Usually you end up liking movies/things that you would have never thought of. Of course some criticism is good, but you have to at least try with everything. While the show lacks in realism it has other good aspects that 'smartass' movies don't have.

    • @hajarmdn4883
      @hajarmdn4883 7 років тому +5

      Really a prick for calling a movie unpopular because reality check, it really isn't with main stream people,it may have won an oscar but just like many others, it didn't become a classic and therefore unless you were born in the late 80s and got to watch in cinemas, you'll probably never hear of it.

    • @shaimaashalaby9081
      @shaimaashalaby9081 7 років тому +26

      This critique, while not entirely wrong, remains only superficially true in one part. It ignores that the point of departure in this specific rendition of Sherlock Holmes, according to its writers, is that Sherlock really isn't genius-smart, but more book-smart. He doesn't have a record-breaking IQ, just vast knowledge of obscure facts and a very good eye for detail. I agree, though, that the way Sherlock is filmed sometimes makes an ordinary thought process seem much flashier. It turns the whole thing into self-parody, a dig at generations of fans obsessed with the "genius" of a man who hoards hyper-specific information and processes them in a logical/pragmatic way, like everyone should, except they don't, which's why he's "great" etc.

    I absolutely loved Sherlock and how it mapped out his thoughts...
    I also liked the Robert Downy Films for the same reason, but for the combat. How he would plan out his attack in slow motion before showing it in real time. In the second one, it used that magnificently to show how Moriarty was his equal by having them both planning their attacks on each other and countering them, and having that connect to their verbal chess match they had played.
    I believe something like that but with the reasoning thing that Sherlock has in the show, but I can't remember when

      "hey, how should we end the series?" "how about we almost completely remove the stuff that makes Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes, replace it with a cop-out resolution to the conflict that doesn't even make any sense with what's going on in the rest of the episode, then have a transparent and shallow attempt to manipulate the viewer's emotions without really doing anything to earn such a shift, to make the ending seem better than it was." "sounds good to me!"

    Amazing analysis!
    I was so taken into the storyline that even my interests in film-making were absolutely forgotten and I couldn't notice this brilliance.

    The greatest part of Sherlock is the cinematography. There's great writing, great acting, and great score, but the cinematography and direction really takes the cake, which is why I love the show so much compared to other shows. I'm really gonna miss it.
