I got curious after I read the book, so I looked at other adaptations and encountered Jeremy Brett's version.
Without having any controversy, Sherlock Holmes is still one of the most influential character as his own sarcastic, but mostly clear-sighted charisma influenced millions of people around the world. And yet, he has also been featured on a series of upcoming movies, TV Shows, stages and books as more people, especially young generation, dreaming of having a very own adventure.
I love the fact that I searched so much about Sherlock that I already knew all of the information in this video! I've read his stories since I was a child and he's been my favorite character since ever!
Is it weird that I knew most of this information already? When the sentence "Elementary my dear Watson" appeared I literally screamed at the screen saying "He never said that!! That was not cannon from Doyle!" And then the guy in the video said it right after. I was relieved. haha
If in the Spanish version he says that, it clearly means that the book itself was poorly translated since in the cannon that was never said. If a work is poorly translated you cannot tell people that the character actually said it in "some other langue version" because it clearly wasn't the author's intention to write it nor it had the author's permission for it to be said. I do think that saying that Joseph Bell "is" Sherlock Holmes is a bit of a stretch. However, I do believe that Doyle was inspired by Joseph Bell's personal nature and work when "designing" his character. Back through history medical practitioners had a more detective-like role, since what a doctor does is literally looking for clues and deducting the most probable cause, something which is true to this day. Today we have specialists in certain medical disciplines, like autopsy for example. This hasn't always been the case. Oh and by the way, Holmes does use the word "elementary", although he doesn't use the phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson". Also, Holmes is described to be wearing a deer stalker cap in "The Hound of the Baskervilles".
That's an underrated Disney film in my opinion. Basil and Rattigan are brilliant and egotistical characters. Also, you cannot fault Vincent Price's performance as Rattigan. He's completely there in the role. Most times with celebrity voices, you can see them in your mind's eye saying their lines into the mic in the recording booth. Try to do that with Price in The Great Mouse Detective. His speech and the animation just blend together flawlessly.
When I first read Doyle's novel, I was very confused. The description of Holmes wasn't even near of what I had in my mind. Imagine someone that never watched Star Wars, and only knows Darth Vader through other people's interpretations of the character, and when he finnaly goes watches the movie, he sees a completely different character. From what I could see, after reading it, is that every interpretation of Holmes is how each autor takes what they most liked in the original Holmes, and works that as his main feature. And after those, we had the ones who took the interpretations of others and made their own interpretations. There are so many different Holmes, it goes from a range of British midle-aged kind of weird man, to an Eastern Europe Blonde Lolita. A Holmes for each taste. I feel like we can all agree that the Holmes of Doyle’s books is the original. But characters, like people, can grow and change through time. I am not the same person I was 10 years ago and, naturally, Holmes isn’t the same as he was 100 years ago. The interpretation you like best is your Holmes. And that’s amazing!

…and after each particular story ends the Doctor rises again a little changed perhaps, but with a new face and fresh mannerisms or turns of phrase but still essentially the Doctor, our Doctor
Sherlock Holmes was one of the first stories I ever read and since I live in Pakistan so as a child I didn't know he was popular. All the things you've mentioned were the things I wondered as well when I started watching characters based on him. 😊
Summary: Sherlock Holmes is the epitome of logic and deductive reasoning. The universal image of our beloved detective comes from our regional and cultural interpretations. Doesn't matter who he or she is, I love Sherlock Holmes
Jeremy Brett is the real Holmes on screen. The Granada series was purposely a canon accurate project, after there being so many takes on the character in the past.
A line from Elementary, a show based on Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock was looking into some comics to solve the murder of a superhero. “Unfortunately, the deaths in the comics involved being sent back in time, buried deep underground, made microscopic, impersonated by an alien and, my particular favorite demise, pushed over a waterfall, locked in the embrace of his nemesis.”
Superbly acted, and with one or two exceptions those Granada adaptations were quite faithful to the canon. Pity he is no longer with us, and more pity he did not did get to adapt all the stories.
As an avid Holmesian I knew all of the less-known facts mentioned at the begining LOL. But it kinda pisses me off how a lot of people associate Sherlock Holmes with BBC Sherlock and not the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books.
Sherlock is a mystery solver. Who is intrigued by the unknown and the unsolved. He digs in deep to find out the truth and is never satisfied, he will still investigate the truth a little further until he absolutely understands, knows and grasp every detail involved. Real thinker who goes above and beyond the call of duty. With cleverness and true wit. Keen observer without leaving anything behind.
i was so confused when people use that phrase "elementary, my dear watson" since i read all original stories of sherlock (4 novels and 56 short stories) because i can't find any. and then i watch this video, well i'm so glad i'm not wrong.
I suddenly find striking similarity between the cultural phenomenon of Holmes and that of Alice (in wonderland). Both based on real-life person, both have iconic features that are not mentioned in the text but are invented by the illustrator (Alice's long blonde hair and pinafore are invented by illustrator John Tenniel, while the real-life Alice was dark-haired), both adapted into countless form, embodying different ideas, and we still recognize them.
It all makes sense now. Sherlock is a TIMELORD! Think about it, he keeps changing in appearance, speech, different points in time, he's all shady, has companions, and solves mysteries!!!
I was going to type that. You were 5 years early! This is the year 2021, we are in need of a Sherlock Timelord to save us from Covid 19. Where is he when we need him!
Though the exact sentence "elementary my dear Watson" doesn't appear in Doyle's work, "elementary" alone is sometimes used by Holmes to qualify some of his conclusion, for instance in "The crooked man" : "Excellent!" I (Watson) cried. "Elementary" said he (Holmes)...
Can we take a sec to appreciate that they included Basil of baker street (from The Great Mouse Detective) in with the other interpretations of Sherlock Holmes?
Very interesting video! I was thinking about this the other day. I remembered that Sherlock never said 'Elementary, my dear Watson" and how I couldn't picture Sherlock without Benedict's face, even if I have read the books and saw first the Robert Downey's movies.
I think this oversimplifies why Sherlock Holmes continues to appeal to generation after generation. If you've ever read the original Conan Doyle stories, you know that Sherlock Holmes in the original stories doesn't stay the same throughout them. The first story was published in 1887. The final collection of stories was published in 1927. That's a span of 40 years. No character has been written by a single author for such a long period of time. And as Conan Doyle aged, Sherlock aged with him. The author's changing perspective is reflected in how Holmes is written. That is why it is so easy for so many adaptations to pick and choose whatever traits they want to focus on. It's why adaptations have varied so much over the centuries. And it's why he has become so endlessly adaptable to any ideology.
I find it funny that I didn't really know of any of the adaptations. I've only heard as well as read about Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Seeing that there have been numerous such adaptations around the world is fascinating, to say the least.
Have your fight about which actor was the best. They'll keep coming and going. But at the end of it all, I'll be having my time of the day diving into the world Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created. The unchanged, precious work of literature. The timeless classic.❤
The best adaptation of Sherlock Holmes is the Livanov movies from the USSR. They stuck to the books very closely, and tried to get actors that looked like the illustrations. They’re so good and accurate that some Holmes statues base their appearance on Livanov.
I have read all that conan doyle has written of holmes , all stories and novels. If you wanna know who Sherlock Holmes is , just read the original conan doyle works . they correapond to a fairly consistent character of Holmes.
I thought Mrs. Hudson was their _landlady;_ she just cooks and makes tea sometimes because she's naturally hospitable and cleans up after them occasionally because she just can't _stand_ the horrifying _shambles_ Sherlock often makes of such a nice apartment.
There is even a great quite underrated manga about sherlock with an anime adaptation but from Moriarty's POV (The villain side). It's called Yuukoku no Moriarty/Moriarty the Patriot
+InMaTeofDeath Holmes seems to be the embodiment of the mastermind personality type. Batman seems to also have the same exaggerated personality so in a way that just might be true.
Love this animation, sound effects, colours, and narration. Thank you Arthur Conan Doyle for Sherlock Holmes. The original look of Holmes is forever my fave. ♥️❤🖊️ 🔍 📚
I wish this video has also included that Sherlock Holmes was at least partly inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's C. Auguste Dupin even though Sherlock himself criticized the latter.
I have read the stories written by Conan Doyle . And in all he had amazing deduction skills. He was able to tell many thing about a person just by seeing them. 1:00 so I don't know where you got that.
the irony that the detective that solves mysteries is one himself in A way.

I was legit about to say that, then I saw this. +1 like
Sherlock Holmes is a time lord.
yes!!!!
+Brandon W What? She said he's a Time Lord, not The Doctor.
+Brandon W Yeah, he is a Time Lord. He's not the only Time Lord though, just one of many.
+Brandon W Ok yeah I'm fine with that.
+Brandon W Awesome sarcasm. -_-
Sherlock Holmes was one of the first stories I ever read and since I live in Pakistan so as a child I didn't know he was popular. All the things you've mentioned were the things I wondered as well when I started watching characters based on him. 😊
The narrator, Addison Anderson, has such a warm n enticing voice.
Part of me why I watch ted-ed is to listen to his voice.😜🤩🤩🤩
4:17 The Great Mouse Detective will always be my favorite adaptation =D
Filtration or density of different substances?
He is cool uwu
Summary: Sherlock Holmes is the epitome of logic and deductive reasoning. The universal image of our beloved detective comes from our regional and cultural interpretations. Doesn't matter who he or she is, I love Sherlock Holmes
Kudos to the animator of this clip!
Jeremy Brett - the ultimate Sherlock Holmes.
I love that actor in Sherlock Holmes
Superbly acted, and with one or two exceptions those Granada adaptations were quite faithful to the canon. Pity he is no longer with us, and more pity he did not did get to adapt all the stories.
As an avid Holmesian I knew all of the less-known facts mentioned at the begining LOL.
But it kinda pisses me off how a lot of people associate Sherlock Holmes with BBC Sherlock and not the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books.
Me personally.. im sad with this fact..
0:49 smiles in Jeremy Brett in the 1984 Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series😌
I suddenly find striking similarity between the cultural phenomenon of Holmes and that of Alice (in wonderland). Both based on real-life person, both have iconic features that are not mentioned in the text but are invented by the illustrator (Alice's long blonde hair and pinafore are invented by illustrator John Tenniel, while the real-life Alice was dark-haired), both adapted into countless form, embodying different ideas, and we still recognize them.
The amazing Sherlock Holmes. He has a huge impact on human imagination. This person of fiction turns to live with and in us forever.
True, how beautifully said!
It all makes sense now. Sherlock is a TIMELORD! Think about it, he keeps changing in appearance, speech, different points in time, he's all shady, has companions, and solves mysteries!!!
+Paul Veilside well A companion really
+Paul Veilside This gives a whole new meaning to Wholock!
I was going to type that. You were 5 years early! This is the year 2021, we are in need of a Sherlock Timelord to save us from Covid 19. Where is he when we need him!
I will now point you towards a story line for the 4th Doctor called "the Talons of Weng-Chiang."
Sherlock holmes is the sacred time keeper?
Though the exact sentence "elementary my dear Watson" doesn't appear in Doyle's work, "elementary" alone is sometimes used by Holmes to qualify some of his conclusion, for instance in "The crooked man" : "Excellent!" I (Watson) cried. "Elementary" said he (Holmes)...
Can we take a sec to appreciate that they included Basil of baker street (from The Great Mouse Detective) in with the other interpretations of Sherlock Holmes?
The best adaptation was clearly Sherlock Gnomes.
Ha , Nice Comment!!
Hahahha
lol
Universally agreed :)
Very interesting video! I was thinking about this the other day. I remembered that Sherlock never said 'Elementary, my dear Watson" and how I couldn't picture Sherlock without Benedict's face, even if I have read the books and saw first the Robert Downey's movies.
I love how they included the great mouse detective at the end.
'will the real Sherlock Holmes please stand up?'
My mind: I think it's kinda hard to stand up in a grave
...🎶 please stand up, please stand up! 🎶
Slim shady
One feature that I remembered very well from Connan Doyle's books is that ShH never ate before finishing a case...
Jeremy Brett is Sherlock Holmes to me
Same, smh these squealing fangirls
linkat | لنكات Same. The one and only.
100% wholeheartedly agree!
Finding this comment😁😁
Yup. Looking for this comment. Brett is the best Holmes.
Casually freaks out when Benedict is shown...
+PSYCHROCKS5 Me too!
+PSYCHROCKS5 No one mentioned him. he is cool right?
Imru I
Yes they did, you need a Sherlock eye to sspot him though...
How come? if you don't mind me asking?
+Jakub Świtalski true :)
Sherlock Holmes is the very first superhero in a way. And he even wore a cape.
he really was, as well as the archetype for batman type superheros with robin sidekicks
Including Basil of Baker Street in their Evolution of Holmes walk, I love it. 😂
Isso foi... lindo! Ótimo trabalho, TED-Ed!
I have read all that conan doyle has written of holmes , all stories and novels. If you wanna know who Sherlock Holmes is , just read the original conan doyle works . they correapond to a fairly consistent character of Holmes.
Sherlock who???
nice joke lol
Sherlock Cumberbatch?
Sherlock Downey Jr
Clearly.
Sherlock the time riser
"Catch me if you can Mr Holmes "
~William James Moriarty
I thought Mrs. Hudson was their _landlady;_ she just cooks and makes tea sometimes because she's naturally hospitable and cleans up after them occasionally because she just can't _stand_ the horrifying _shambles_ Sherlock often makes of such a nice apartment.
There is even a great quite underrated manga about sherlock with an anime adaptation but from Moriarty's POV (The villain side). It's called Yuukoku no Moriarty/Moriarty the Patriot
Sherlock Holmes is Batman.
That just might be true
+InMaTeofDeath And Dr. House. Quite a range of work for Holmes.
+InMaTeofDeath No I am sherlock, see. Ironman tony stark robert downey jr sherlock holmes
+InMaTeofDeath Holmes seems to be the embodiment of the mastermind personality type. Batman seems to also have the same exaggerated personality so in a way that just might be true.
+Irun Mon oh the IRON y
Your last two words sum it all up: "Our Sherlock"
Communist vibe xD
0:29 I remembered Moriarty the Patriot ♡, I screamed
0:30 "Best friend and housemate Dr John Watson" had me cracking up
Love this animation, sound effects, colours, and narration. Thank you Arthur Conan Doyle for Sherlock Holmes. The original look of Holmes is forever my fave. ♥️❤🖊️ 🔍 📚
that subtle benedict cumberbatch reference at 4:31
+Nitish Anand Also Robert Downey Jr at 4:30 . I think they were all references, including the rat.
+Evandro A Indeed it was! A 1986 Disney animated film called "The Great Mouse Detective".
+Evandro A
as I remember, the rat took part in tom & jerry... but I couldnt find the Sherlock Hound
I wish this video has also included that Sherlock Holmes was at least partly inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's C. Auguste Dupin even though Sherlock himself criticized the latter.
No One:
Eminem: Will the real slim shady please stand up?
No One ever:
Ted ed: Will the real Sherlock Holmes stand up?
I am Spartacus. No, I am Spartacus. I'm the real Spartacus. I am Spartacus......
It's been a pleasure re-discovering the original stories.
I have read the stories written by Conan Doyle . And in all he had amazing deduction skills. He was able to tell many thing about a person just by seeing them. 1:00 so I don't know where you got that.
Conan Edogawa is Sherlock Holmes :)
I watched Case closed as a child I am surprised I am not scared for life.
Yes, he is~
heiji hakuba
no, he is a timelord! also the eleventh does play as sherlock Holmes. so it makes sence if he is a timelord
+Artist modro I vote for Victorique as the anime Sherlock Holmes.
