The man's story was about killing his wife after she "provoked" him for saying he wasn't a real man. He later tells John that it wasn't worth his time. Why? Because he'd already confirmed that the man had no self control and would have likely killed Sherlock if he'd had another knife in his hands. Plus, if you remember from A Study In Pink, he told John that he helped Mrs Hudson with ensuring her husband's execution after a similar situation.
