- We test out three different types of mufflers on my 79 C10 Short bed. We've not been happy with the Flowmasters and the inherent drone that they have. I decide to try out a set of turbo's and glass packs to decide which we like the best. Flowmaster vs. turbo muffler vs. glass packs.

If you want it throaty, put mufflers near rear; for snappy, bark, put them up front with long pipes. This is especially true with glass packs.
What deep tone throaty muffler do you recommend for a 1987 4Runner 22RE EFI. Dyno max? Cherry bomb? Thrush? Or flow master? I also bought a camshaft for it, it has a choppy aggressive sound to it. Thanks for reading
Here's a video I made of some Flow Monsters. ua-cam.com/video/3HxLThiSqLc/v-deo.html
v-8 is recomemded

This right here is a couple that KNOWS how to make a proper exhaust video! Great work!
Thanks
Definitely the glass packs sound great 👍
Glass packs make me smile 😃
Good vid.
In my opinion, Thrush welded mufflers are very underrated.
Glass packs all the way ! 😁
Well done. I think I'd go the glass packs also.
Great choice on the GLASS PACKS...!!! Will be putting same product on my '79 Chevy C10.
It was really nice to see a video where somebody put some effort into making sure the sound quality goes through on the video. Good job. I like the glass packs
Thanks.
This was the confirmation I needed. I'm putting a glasspack on my ram tomorrow.
Had glasspacks on my 69 f250, loved them so much, quiet while idling or cruising but when you got on it wakes up the dead. I actually got well known as the kid with the loud old truck cause of the exhaust lol.
great video . location was awesome for the sound . beats the hell out of a shop video . I agree with your choice as well .
I put a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler on every vehicle I own. Love the deeper tone. I always have the pipe(s) sticking out 3" past the rear bumper. Takes care of the drone sound, inside of the cab. IMHO.
good and helpful video - great comparison ! I recently installed a FlowMaster Super 44 on my Xj 4.0 and I love this muffler for the deep - raw - raucous tone !
Fantastic video! 06/30/20 Beautiful scenery in a world that was a mess!
Truly an accurate representation of the sounds of these three mufflers.
Reading through the great comments it seems you helped people decide
the direction for their own exhaust. Thanks for your efforts!
I'm sorry you lost all your video footage! That really sucks. Love your videos. Appreciate all your information and you sharing with all of us!
Great, and well produced comparison video. Thanks man!
Thanks. I try to get a decent video with the outdated equipment I have
GREAT VIDEO!! I'm working on a car, not a square body, but this was very helpful. I loved the chambered muffler. But then you mentioned a droning. But then someone mentioned a fix for that. Made my decision harder. But I think I'll go with a turbo. A bit quieter and I have a small block so no need in pretending with more noise.....lol. Thanks again. This was exactly what I needed.
Glass packs have always been my favorite, might be because I was born in the 60's. They were what all of us ran growing up.....& I still run 'em.
Cory... Jacob... Smokes lets go
There ain't nothing that sounds like a pair of burnt out glass packs and that being said there isn't a car or truck running a V8 today that has the body rattling ground shaking loppy sound of the true muscle motors from the late 50's to the early 70's there were some MONSTERS made and many that did not get the credit they deserve and have since been long forgotten unless your a car geek like myself that loves to no anything about them old heavy irons a good example would be a 1958 Plymouth Fury with a 350 Golden Commando Big Block dual 4 barrel's from the factory witch were of the cross ram design this monster made 305 HP and I'm sure that was numbers being dumbed down
As always great video, looking forward to the next one
Thanks
I've got dual glass packs on my 71 Cheyenne
Thanks for your input, l think l’m going with the glass packs. Again thanks. Joe
I have an 86 Chevy Blazer with a 77 400sb, quadrajet carb and hooker long tube 2 1/2 inch headers. Right now I'm running her wide open. I'm definitely considering the glass pack. You have the perfect truck to use as a reference. Thank you for the video!
The glasspack sound better i was thinking. Thanks for the video.
Nice video! I appreciate the effort that went into making it
Thanks, I appreciate that.
Nice comparison! I really like the sound of glass packs, but for daily driving and highway use, I had the Summit turbo mufflers on all my trucks. Thanks!
Glass packs, around town, drive easy, and they quiet up.....get on it hard for a bit, they get twice as loud!!! Love em'
Thanks for the video. I was always a flowmaster guy. But now i like the moroso spiral flow muffler
Just ordered a pair of 29” glass packs and turn downs for my 1977 f250 with a mildly built 460. Can not wait.
Helping me out slot lately, thanks brotha, subscribed
Awesome! Glad to help out. Thanks for the feedback, reading comments like this makes it all worth it.
I think the glass packs sound the best. Definitely at idle.
After 45 years of fiddling with small block V8 Chevys, I have found that the cherry bombs sound best when used with 2 1/2 inch head pipe, 2 inch tail pipe and 18 inch long 3 inch diameter "can" tips. No X or H pipe. Idle rumble, acceleration bark and relatively little drone at cruise speed.
The "turbo" muffler design was original equipment on Corvair Turbo cars in the 60s. Another old method of quieting an old hot rod was using a pair of 500 CI Cadillac mufflers installed backwards.
Glass packs continually get louder... By 30,000 miles they're horrible.
@@hotrodray6802 So? Whip out the air chisel and replace them. Takes about the same time as a thorough lube, oil & filter and it's a refreshing change.
This is a great video. Well done and I can appreciate how long it took to do everything to make this, when you might have not done it otherwise if you weren’t making the video.
Thanks
Thanks for this great test! I prefer Flowmaster for V8 but Glass packs are good option anyway.
Great test and comparison.......
My vote for glasspack also. Best sound at idle I thought. Great video.
Great comparison. Thanks for taking the time to put it together. That's a sweet truck! Hardly ever see any with the factory bumper guards.
Thanks a million for taking the time out to share this video, now i know exactly which way to go with choice of muffler, i have a hummer h2,and I'm looking for that rumble, that deep bass, and that glass pack sounds like it may just do the job. Awesome video footage, keep up the good work 👍
Thanks
Glass packs on an h2 🤣
Good video taught me a lot , glass packs I like the best
Thanks for compairing those three.I have short glasspacks under the cab and turbo mufflers mounted at the end of the bed behind the bumper. Its quiet with that combo.Gets roudy with just the short glasspacks. Its easy to remove the turbo mufflers in the rear when you want it louder.
Had a ,69 GMC 1 ton ( 12 ft. flat deck ) ,327 ci ,out of a ,60 s Camaro ,turbos ending , just , passed the cab. The drone was too much, shoulda extended out the sides or farther back . Could still slightly spin the 18 in. duals. , 18 mpg, Canadian ,with a back wind . What a truck.
Good video. This one is more helpful than most. Thanks.
Nice of you to do an example of a few of the styles.
Thanks for making this video! It’s very helpful to have an example to go off of. I’m trying to decide which mufflers you put on my ‘80 squarebody (have to keep the neighbours happy)😆
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
So I've got to say ,! I put my glass pac on reverse, on my 04 5.3 silverado and man let me tell you that is the most Awesome low growl I have had on any of my 7 trucks of all .. you will love it trust me it is worth the time and effort to check it out .. I would send you an email of it but at the moment its getting a BTR stage 3 cam and other sorts of goodies to go with that growl !!
Thank you for your diligence and hard work on the video ! Ones like you really help others in hard decisions..
Back in the 80s we ran glass packs in our trucks in high school. So I put some on my 2002 silverado HD man it was loud at full throttle. It was a work truck so I didn't mind. Now I have a 2012 silverado 6.2 and I put magnaflows. Kinda have a drone but if you go fast enough it goes away 80mph.
Awesome video. I'm here cause I'm gonna put exhaust on an old Ford and I think I'm going glass packs now. I had Flowmasters on an old Chevy I used to drive and I had the same thing, the drone was really annoying but the truck sounded great.
Really appreciate you taking the time man, especially having to redo a lot of it again!
It's all part of it. Thanks for watching.
i guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account?
I stupidly lost my login password. I love any tips you can give me.
@Scott Hank Instablaster =)
@Mario Jagger I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Mario Jagger it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my ass :D
It sounds amazing with them glasspacks
Thanks
Glass packs sound great 👍
big help, thanks
Glass packs just belong on square bodies. The turbos seem to sound a little better after a few months use but glass packs just have that good old school sound.
Glass packs always sound best on decel compared to a traditional muffler.
Longer glass packs are better then the silly stubby ones. Thrush makes them up to 32inch with a built in turn down. Would be perfect for a truck like this.
Yes glass packs sounds great
I hav an 2005 Tahoe 4x4 5.3. I run a Elec exhaust cut out with a Thrust Hush and 1 side and open exhaust on the other. 3” cutout. 1 way quiet for road driving, and put a button and wake the dead……Love it and only hav $250 in the whole setup. Done it my self……
Awesome idea
Great video! Thanks
Thank you
Without a doubt the throaty glass pack! I’m going to pinch your audio, fit a boombox to my Pride Celebrity XL8 converted Rolls Royce mobility scooter and scare the sheeet out of my Parisian neighbours. Thank you for the tests and the loan of your audio - it should clear the way nicely when I’m shopping inside my local Monoprix supermarket.
Thanks for doing this test , without a doubt the glass packs sounded the best , well the first ones made noise but you said it had a drone, so it clearly was easy to tell the Glass Packs sounded the best .. Thank you
Just finish installing the Summit version of the purple hornies except there SS for 20 bucks more and cant get over headers and header mufflers or hornies could be that quite.
Very helpful. Thanks!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
I dont like the short glasspacks, too loud in my opinion and sound sloppy. But those 18 in. are my favorite. Wont give you a headache and that cackle on deceleration is like Mozart to me lol. Snap, Crackle, and Pop!
I have a 5.3 vortec Tahoe and have my exhaust cut from the cats back with dual M80 Cherry Bombs. I love the sound of it its definitely a head turner. Plus side is when im coasting or not on the gas its not loud at all just a deep gurgle. But if i floor it you will hear it from several blocks away
I've never ran turbo mufflers. I've ran glasspacks and flowmasters. Each flowmaster and glasspack is different. To help with drone, full tail pipes out the back and some sort of crossover pipe helps. But, turbo mufflers I assume would get louder over time. Since they use some sort of packing material around the perf tubes in the main chamber of the muffler. Turbo mufflers have other little small chambers inside as well. That's why its so quiet inside. It can cancel out more frequencies like drone, etc.
Had glasspacks on my old 83 f100 and it was so loud, I would set off car alarms with it. Had 40 series flows on my 84 305 Camaro loved the tone, but nothing sounds as good as a glasspack to me.
Glasspacks have that old car sound
I personally like the glass pack, I've got a set of shortys that I had on my k10 and I think I'm going to put back on it, I have some knock off Flowmaster super 10s but I just don't like them. Same with the drone and they are just not that loud!
I used to hate glasspacks, but I guess my tastes are changing with age.
The glasspack mufflers sounded just like the General Lee...YeeHah ! Just a good O' boy makin' some noise...
I still like that Flowmaster. Something about that low rumbling really travels far when punching that throttle.
I like the sound of them too, just the resonance in the cab was not enjoyable for us.
@@SquarebodyStuff I have a set of early 1990's era Thunderbolt mufflers. They sound like a Flowmaster that hit puberty! Love them and nothing else I've ever heard has the sound of my 87 C10
Nice!!
turbo sounded the best by far, but i would've went for an oval glass pack muffler instead of the hotdog.
Yep the glass pack.
I have a 1973 Super Cheyenne with dual 8' Glasspacks.....The best sound ever!
An 8 foot glasspack. That's one long muffler! :D
Nice shootout!
Thanks
@@SquarebodyStuff I wonder what kind of sound would be if you put two glasspacks in a row per side.
ありがとうございます🙌
Shit, im sold on the glasspacks
I've always liked glasspacks
Haha 2 years later. I still looking at exhaust videos with my tited 305 engines 😂
I got glass packs on my 86 and it sounds good to me to.
NOW THATS HOW TO DEMO MUFFLERS WELL DONE
COOL
Thanks. That took us two days to film. I can't thank my wife enough for the support.
Dual glass packs on my 87 305 custom deluxe.. sounds good. Engine is tired though.
Good ole Chevy 350, everything sounds good :-)
Cool video and thanks for you providing this to the masses.
Now I’m a Flowmaster fan and have been since I’ve seen at the beginning of World Street Car Finals at Orlando Speed World.
I’m sure you know 40 series Flowmasters are their classic muffler.
The delta series Flowmaster might be something to consider.
Although this looks like a budget exhaust system you are going for.
Question: have you checked out the Hush power Flowmaster line up?
Those flow straight through also like the glass pack you like the most.
Currently working out a 78 Scottsdale c10 and a 86 silverado c10 😎
Glass packs for me, thanks for going to the trouble of doing it twice
Recently did a muffler delete on my 2010 Kia Forte sx it was extremely loud I think I’ll go with the turbo mufflers
Thanks because I felt the same I bought cherry 🍒 bomb muffler love the sound I agree 👍
I USED 12-INCH REVERSIBLE CHERRY BOMBS ON MY 350 CHEVY ;
I LOVE THE SOUND " WHEN THE LAKE PIPES ROAR "
I had a Studebaker Hawk with a V8, and dual glass packs. The sound was nice, but I had a cross over pipe put in, and it made a mellower sound, plus I picked up some low end torque. I liked it.
I have the stuff to put a cross over, just haven't made the time to get it in.
@@SquarebodyStuff I was surprised at the increase in torque it gave. The sound was also quite pleasing. Best wishes on your project. I had the Hawk back in the '70's, and now that I'm retired, I bought a '59 Ford Fairlane 500. It needs some work, but fortunately not a lot.
Thanks for putting in the time, was extremely helpful info. I'm at a crossroad between the the Magnaflow 10416 or the MF-13743. Both are straight thru design except one is chambered (which I dont really understand if its straight Thru). Hard decision!
That could be a tough decision.
The Magnaflow XL isn't straight through, it uses 2 separate perforated tubes that are offset from each other. Look up pictures of it to see what I mean. Search for inside, cutaway, or something like that.
You got a second gear scratch in the other two but the glass pack you didn't.
Or am I wrong
They all sounded great. I don't have a preference really.
Thanks bro I’m trying to figure out what to put on my 69 c10. Currently I have dual 40 series flows with electric cut outs for open headers. I hate the drone sound so I’m looking to take them out and switch to packs
No problem. I love the sound of chambered mufflers, but hate the drone inside. The glasspacks give it a good old school sound.
I gotta agree with you on your truck. the glaspacs sound better and at idle with that cam youre got a nice lope. Butt 6-8months from now thes gonna make alot more noise! CHEERS
If you're a snow cruncher all in together now!
Just built a 355 sbc, little hotter cam , going in a 1970 c10 step, going with cherry bombs, best sound ever, can’t wait
Awesome, it's gonna sound great
i got super 10s on my 84 k5 on a 307 with a big ol crank and cam, gonna go 383 stroker soon with an efi
Honestly I really like the sound of Flowmaster!!!
I do too, but the drone on the inside was more than I liked.
@@SquarebodyStuff Totally!!.,
Have a great Sunday!!!
That test mule is a Georgia moon runner! Flow master more rumble, turbo OEM,the cherry bomb my choice!
I've been on that road many times
FINALLY MY QUESTION ANSWERED!
(Do glasspacks produce drone)
Manboob sweat...the struggle is real my friend. I feel your pain 😂
1 day soon u will get old will then how funny life is baldy...
Might try dynomatting the floor, firewall, and behind the seat. My K5 was the worst until the mat. Really helps keep the heat out too. Sounds less like I'm driving inside of a 5g bucket....
Just roll with some cherry bomb glass packs
Glasspacks definitely
