Jacques Offenbach's fantasy opera "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" in a new Mariinsky Theatre production

The Mariinsky Theatre production of Jacques Offenbach's fantasy opera "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" won the Golden Sofit, St Petersburg's highest theatrical award as Best Opera Production in 2022. The production was directed by Daniel Kruglikov. The principal roles are performed by Sergei Skorokhodov, Antonina Vesenina, Angelina Akhmedova,Tatiana Serjan, Yekaterina Sergeyeva, Gleb Peryazev, Vladimir Feliauer.
Jacques Offenbach created a lot of “light” music and became famous as an unsurpassed master of operetta, but his farewell and main work was a great fantasy opera "Les Contes d'Hoffmann". It remained unfinished, but it was this very characteristic that paradoxically contributed to its popularity.
Here erased the boundaries between reality and phantasmagoria, dream and reality, common sense and the vagaries of stupefied imagination. And the ending of "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" always turns into an intrigue, because there is no single solution - and theaters offer the most diverse variants of the ending.
