Another T1D here, I’ve recently had to deal with more and more people telling me they don’t understand why I ever have blood sugar issues because “it’s so easy once you know what you’re looking for.” All because they are using CGMs for weight loss or marathon training, etc. It’s caused so many problems when trying to explain, for example, why I was late to work because my blood sugar was to low for me to safely drive. She has a normal weight, eats normally, and then someone who should definitely know better insinuates it’s her fault that she got diabetes when it’s genetic?
Or the amount of people who think she’s doing something wrong for eating carbs or at least sweet food like chocolate or cake. No, it’s fine, she just needs to take care of getting the right amount of insulin.

When I was pregnant (gestation diabetes) I went above and beyond to be able to have a CGM (I have Trypanophobia) it had the opposite effect on me - it helped me have more food freedom. With traditional blood glucose testing I felt like I had to be perfect with my numbers otherwise I would spiral and obsess over my foods and became very restrictive. But with the CGM I could see what was spiking me and I could take action to balance myself and I didn’t feel like I was being punished. Might sound dramatic but I was in a very dark place at the time when I was told I would have to test my blood sugar and this really helped me. I don’t think people who don’t have a diagnosis should be able to have access to these items however.

this, coupled with the ozempic, feels like a huge slap in the face to diabetics (specifically type 1). having diabetes in the US is a HUGE life expense, and to see influencers use it because they didn't pay attention the basic nutrition lesson about this that gets taught in school is genuinely infuriating. the US already has an ozempic and ADHD med shortage, and i can't imagine the struggle actual diabetics are about to face because of this tomfoolery

Thats honestly what I think. It’s the same thing when these same types of influencers lie about having certain allergies, use accessibility features on their phone when they don’t need to, use life saving medications as weight loss tools, etc. I don’t know why there’s this weird trend of people that want to feel special in this way, it’s very disturbing to me. I have been waiting for you to do a video on CGMs for months! I briefly jumped on this bandwagon last year. I did learn a few valuable things: 1) bad sleep totally destabilizes my blood sugar, 2) alcohol crashes my blood sugar, 3) walking is GREAT for my blood sugar. I learned all of that within the first week. After that, the CGM caused nothing but feelings of anxiety and guilt. The company I used offered “guidelines” that were impossible to attain (fasting glucose below 85 and no spikes over 110). Moreover, the devices themselves have a huge margin of error, which is why they are not supposed to be used for diagnostic purposes. My first device was extremely inaccurate. The numbers alarmed me so much that I paid extra for a panel of blood work offered by the same company. Thirty seconds before my blood draw, my CGM showed 113. The blood glucose test revealed a fasting glucose of 83! All of my other blood work was perfect. When I contacted customer service about this, they said such discrepancies were normal and that I should pay more attention to the fluctuations than the numbers themselves. That doesn’t seem helpful to me. Eventually, checking my glucose became just as triggering as weighing myself.

I have diagnosed reactive hypoglycemia with lows in the 30-40s. Monitoring my blood glucose is important (and recommended by my PCP + Endocrinologist) as a way to manage my condition. The CGM influencer trend is so weird to me, because even if they see a "high spike" if they still feel fine and their body quickly self regulates the spike....what's the issue? I just feel like it's another metric to obsess over for folks that don't really need to, like don't make your life harder than it has to be.

Thank you for this! I personally use a CGM as a non-diabetic, but only took the plunge when I saw that my hypoglycemic episodes were getting worse post-mono (thanks to my T1D friend for pointing my symptoms out). My doctor has been involved in my monitoring and we opted to keep the CGMs going now that my body is back to normal as I have been successful in using it to stave off my hypoglycemic episodes (I always used to catch them too late).
Ever since I started to use them though, I have seen an increase in advertising for a lot of these CGM "body hacking" companies and always felt put off by it. No one seems to really know what anything means and they're not getting advice from their doctor on it at all. And I think that the Glucose Goddess is one of the worst social media influencers in that she is giving out information based on loose science and strictly personal anecdotes, and people take it as gospel. It seems like the biggest misconception is that the quick increase in blood glucose is the problem, when in fact, if it stayed high, that would be cause for concern.. our bodies have many mechanisms and processes that maintain balance. When those are disrupted, and there is cause or reason to believe that this is dangerous to health, that is a conversation for your doctor, not a company trying to make money, while the popularity of these devices makes access for individuals who need them more impossible.

Great video as usual, really important information shared. My dad, who's diabetic and has heart problems, recently had an annual check up at the VA and the visit went very well. When asked about what was different in his daily routines, he told the GP that my mom had passed away after a few years of health problems and that they both used to eat a lot of "fast food" and because it's just him now, he hasn't had hardly any in the past 6 months. We make him stews, components of meals he can just reheat, etc. He eats fruit and oat cereal everyday, and, he "putters" = gentle movement. I'm hoping that by applying everything I've learned from your videos, I'll get to spend more time with my dad, so far it's going great. He says he feels better and knew the appt would go well because of that. Side note,...I learned he never really liked potato salad, just ate it cuz mum liked it😂

A year ago my new doctor told me my blood sugar number had creeped up from pre diabetes to diabetes level. Other than telling me to “eat more vegetables and cut back on sweets”, she was remarkably unhelpful and offered no recommendations for education or method of tracking the problem. I mean, I’d really rather not glue a needle to my arm, but blood tests every six months doesn’t feel like it provides timely feedback.
Realizing now that supposedly healthy people are basically playing with this medical equipment is annoying. I say “supposedly” because how mentally healthy is it to micromanage your blood sugar with no medical necessity and apparently little or no understanding of how blood sugar is supposed to work?

I do have blood sugar issues and check my fasting glucose in the a.m. on some days, and occasionally check to see how I respond to certain meals. It CAN be very helpful if you truly have a blood sugar problem. But, people stressing out if they go up to 100 is ridiculous and I've seen it. Now, I can spike up into the 220s if I'm not careful.

I was diagnosed prediabetic and checking my blood sugar regularly (without a cgm, although id love to get one) helped me realize what spikes me and also helped me treat my blood sugar issues, and inadvertently reactive hypoglycemia that i had been dealing with for years. My a1c is in a healthy range now, for now! :D I think its important to recognize that diabetes is not just type 1 and type 2, that theres several different things that can mess with our blood glucose. What we need is education on these issues and how diabetes is NOT always because youre "eating badly". I hate the capitalist lens of the CGM and very healthy people using them for funsies. Howeverrrr unfortunately as someone with documented blood sugar issues, i cant get one covered because im not type 1. I think CGMs have only recently (this week i think!) Been approved for insulin dependent type 2s. Therefore i have considered using a CGM from one of these shady companies. I really am wondering if the real issue here is insurance companies and unregulated profit motive on both ends. THAT, and a general misunderstanding on diabetes and blood sugar because of a lack of public education on it. Thanks for covering this.
SIDENOTE when i was first diagnosed prediabetic i was SCARED AF when i saw high numbers. It can be really scary as someone with those issues. So if youre healthy (pancreatically) and looking for something to cling to for having control over your diet... it can seem really appealing.

Since then, (10 years) my food life has been difficult, because of IBS and SIBO. I always had a healthy diet and I was a fit person. Now I find out that I'm pre-diabetic and I have a fatty liver. All of this talk about CGM's and carb-shunning has me absolutely terrified! I have a dietician on speed dial because of all my digestive issues, and she can't even calm me down. I never had to worry about food or weight or blood sugar or FODMAPS or anything before. I am using the Zoe programme at the moment which sent a cgm to collect data for 2 weeks. It was interesting to see how different foods and food combinations created different blood sugar responses. I was also interested to see where my blood sugar fluctuates during the day, but “flattening the curve” when you already have fairly average blood sugar levels is not that easy! I don’t think it would be good for me long term. I did think it would be great for my 78 year old type 2 diabetic dad who struggles with pin prick tests, but they are SO expensive and not available on the nhs for type 2 in the U.K.

I have never put a single thought into blood sugar spikes because of course it will spike! It's when it stays high for a long period that you need to be worried. Someone who doesn't have diabetes will have their blood sugar go down without needing insulin and won't have negative side effects. Your body does all these things without you noticing, so appreciate it and let it do its thing. Leave these tools for the people who need them.

I had no idea that people who are not diagnosed as diabetic can get the same sensors. In my country (in Nordic Europe), the sensors and supplies for T1D are free (covered by the government). Patients need to pay for their insulin, but it's not very expensive as the government covers most of the price. Some companies sell sensors separately for fitness enthusiasts, but as far as I know, they're not overly popular because of the high price tag. Our "free" health care system is in a major crisis, and food prices are very high, but it breaks my heart that people overseas struggle to get their vital medication and supplies. The sensor has been life-changing.

I think they are useful for non diabetics to an extent as they can help us avoid becoming diabetics. I can see how they might not help people prone to eating disorders.
