Omar really finessed the whole system. He was able to make the music HE wanted to under a major label, have multiple signature instruments, travel the world... Shit I'm jealous lol. Nah but I'm grateful for the music TMV got me through my teens and young adult life
I was a Junior and met 3 Seniors from my Media Tech class. Blasted TMV all the time. However! They also played At the Drive-In’ music and I got hooked! Hope those 3 are doing well. Sweet guys.
Omar is a genius.
Its like omar saw every color in the universe and said fuck it let me make my own color. If that makes sense
Came across this with no intention of finishing it in one sitting…. Here I am wrapping it up without a break at 3AM. Amazing interview
thank you for tuning in
Cant believe im 2 years late on this. Mars volta is my fave of all time. Omar is a icon
enjoy
@@deandelraywhen was this? What year? If I may ask.
Never really listened to Omar talk, seems like a cool dude. He's obviously a very knowledgeable and experienced guy, but he also has this quite child-like laugh and curiosity that is super endearing.
Interview at 9:30
Why the fuck did I have to scroll down so far for this?
Underrated Guitar Hero ORL
Totally, He is my Hero and he has been paving road to me that to represent and generate myself by music.
The best Omar interview!
this was a great one. Omar is easily one of the most interesting people on the planet. been through many ups and downs and somehow still remains the ultimate level of humble. i got to meet him once and talk to him for roughly an hour. words dont describe how much that conversation moved me. i guess check that one off the bucket list
SWEEET interview man I could listen to Omar forever, dude is so chill, and its weird cuz his music is so damn insane yet he's just like a regular friendly dude.
Why did he call Juan a sociopath? Omar is so fucking toxic. They always talk some shit in interviews about the past members of the band. It was the same with Eva Gardner, Jim Ward, Thomas Pridgen, Jon Theodore.
I waited in the snow to meet the Mars Volta after one of their gigs on the Bedlam in Goliath tour and Omar seemed really nice and chill.
What a fantastic interview. Im shocked I havent heard this gem of a podcast before. Thank you Omar and Dean.
oh shit. this man had jon , juan and cedric. . . . and now omar? fucking LEGEND @23:10 YES i always said TMV was my generations pink floyd/zeppelin/santana all in one with some punk edge.
This was awesome for the level of introspection, self-awareness, psychology, and just plain cultural (and general) consciousness these dudes have
I am loving binging through all the individual members of Mars Volta and QOTSA episodes in the last couple weeks, easily the best interviews I've listened to any of them have.
11:10:30 Is Omar talking about Juan Alderante? I he says "we had this, like, sociopath in The Mars Vola, who played for a while, you know, in the band, who just really got in the way of the communication-" "The drummer?" "-No, uh, our bass player, towards the end, for a while there."
The only TMV bass player I know of is Juan Alderante. That doesn't really sound right. My understanding, though, is that Juan was the bassist for the final lineup. Is there some other bassist that I don't know about? I'm just having such a hard time wrapping my head around this (Although, btw, I wonder why Dean said, "The drummer?" and who he was thinking of when he said that).
I also think it's sort of fucked up that Omar skirts responsibility for that conflict here. When Cedric talks about the conflict, he makes it pretty clear, he was upset that Omar was focusing his time and energy on another band. In this interview, it sounds like Omar is blaming 'the bassist' for the conflict. That's doesn't really make sense to me, it sounds like he's blaming someone else for something he's responsible for.
There's interviews about them having issues with Pridgen being too immature for them/still in rockstar partying stage too much or whatever, so that's probably why he thought that.
Look we don’t know the situation ourselves. We’re in less position to judge than he is by far
@@wesphillips8058 I've worked as a counselor in drug programs for many years, with probationers, parolees, and CWS referrals. There are a lot of sociopaths and narcissists in that population (ie, the venn diagram where criminal justice involvement and substance abuse overlap). I have some exposure to how people with cluster b personality disorders think and act.
That said, I listened to the interview with Juan, and I don't hear anything in his thinking that would indicate narcissistic tendencies. That doesn't mean they absolutely aren't there. They easily could be. But I don't hear it when I listen to Juan talk for a few hours. With Omar, by comparison, I hear a lot of things that make me think Omar is difficult to be around.
Omar doesn't take any responsibility for his fight with Cedric. He says it was Juan's fault. He says his only mistake was listening to Juan. That's is a _classic_ narcissictic technique for _sounding_ like you're taking responsibility, when in reality, you are blaming someone else. Throughout this interview, Omar repeatedly returns to this theme about how unnamed 'other people' are hypocritical for calling Omar a genius, only to revoke that appraisal later. He tends to position himself as being superior to others. He sounds like he holds grudges and makes enemies.
Obviously, they know more about their own lives than I do. But, just based on what I'm hearing, I'm not really buying what Omar is selling.
@@QuigglesayNo what interview exactly did they talk about that?
I thought the same When I heard them talking about the toxicity, couldn't believe they were talking about Juan, even after the band split, Juan was still active with Cedric on Zavalaz so it's hard to believe what Omar saying but I guess u never know
Thank you for bringing Omar and Cedric to your show. It’s great to see how you can relate through the music - the medium which is personally distant and sort of live life on it’s own - to its creators as well. Love it!
Great convo. Love hearing from Omar long form like this
Dude Dean, thanks so much for this! This is the best interview with Omar I’ve heard, by far! Gonna be in SoCal again soon. Looking forward to catching one of your upcoming show dates! Take care dude :)
Amazing musician, artist, director etc etc
1:17:31 ORL's analysis of Metallica's career trajectory following Cliff Burton's tragic death was beautiful.
After PURPLE RAIN, PRINCE released another two albums before SIGN'O'THE TIMES. AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY and PARADE. Both are among his greatest. My faforites are AROUND... and SIGN'O'THE TIMES, psych funk in a retro modern way. He was really weird and prolific. I bet, he left some 50 albums in his vault
Clicked the Thumbs Up before the conversation started. Also, why didn’t I hear this months ago? Pure Laziness, from me. You’re the best, Dean.
Enjoyed this!
I've never seen so much Dean in my feed! Alright with me. Hope you are well man, stay safe and stay rad!

Dean the interviewer seems pretty cool too! I love TMV and ATDI and Cedric and Omar are geniuses, thanks for having these interviews, you said there were two of Cedric? I gotta find the second one.
Great conversation.
I sometime feel like a good intention is to get appear on the high road, an, its not very common to sleep on the floor, but, the good notice Is to keep it real, to maintain that fury of the mars Volta music, I like it
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great interview Dean, by the way, when was this recorded/released ?
Really a treat and a refreshing vibe to hear one of my favorite band members being honest artists and genuinely passionate and excited about sharing.
Looking forward to the Cedric Interview.
Lol @ Dean with his Lucy question at the end hahahaha
This was probably like almost 3 years ago. Theres a Cedric interview already with him
👏👏👏
Pulling up
anyone know what he means by retrospective?
Oooh an evening with…. I love that idea! It could be a festival huh, Omar and Cedric Land! Fuck Astro world!
Was he talking about Juan as a sociopath?
elaborate
i think so. juan is the man.
I also picked up on this. Juan was in the Volta from 2003 until the end and played consistently in the ORL Group. To say he was playing "towards the end" is a bit of an understatement. Juan also went on to play with Cedric in Zavalas, post Volta. Omar is a musical hero of mine, but to call Juan Alderete (if this is who he's referring to - but who else could it be?) a sociopath and discredit his commitment to Omar's music is not fair. Plus, I don't believe it.
That’s what I’m wondering... I wanna doubt it tho.
@@IDKSOMTHIN omar and Cedric have passed judgment on a lot of people. no ones perfect...
Damn, so Juan Alderete is a sociopath, makes sense. I remember talking to him before a gig once and he just seemed 'off'
