    I can corroborate this car's drive-ability. It instills confidence. Its sportiness and agility make it an experience wholly different than any Honda I've ever driven. Quite frankly, I'm blown away. Amazing value.

    I really like the new look of the Civic, and I like the color, which reminds me of the green on my old Mazda 2, although this is a bit lighter. I don't care if it looks strange because it's different. It would certainly be easy to find in a parking lot.
    That being said, if I was in the market for a compact car I would still probably pick a Mazda 3 over this, especially the Mazda 3 hatchback with the 2.5L engine. I would get that great Mazda handling, around the same HP as this car with probably better long term reliability, a better transmission than a CVT, and an infotainment system that is actually user friendly, all at around a similar price.
    Still, I applaud Honda for actually trying to be different instead of just making another econ-o-box. With some more refinement this car could be the best compact.

    • @mattmolloy636
      @mattmolloy636 8 років тому +6

      D Bear yeah, a lot of us would still go for the Mazda 3. This car did a great job, but I think the customer base that prefers function over fashion is definitely going to go for the Mazda 3 every time.

    • @dannydeleney2810
      @dannydeleney2810 7 років тому +1

      matt molloy
      It's the other way around. No offense, but the Mazda 3 has the edge in two things: driving dynamics and styling (subjective). Yes, those two are important, but the car loses to its competition in other areas as well. Take the newest Civic for example, it offers way more space and functionality, better NVH mitigation (i.e. refinement), and better fuel economy. The trade-off is that it only has about 85% of the "fun-to-drive" feeling of the Mazda 3. After that, the competitors are offering better connectivity; though I don't see it as important as the aforementioned features. Anyway, your assertion of Mazda 3 being function over fashion is incorrect.
      The 2017 refresh was commendable, but the Mazda 3 is half a generation behind in aspects other than being "fun to drive" (plus the competition is catching up).

    • @t.k.morris
      @t.k.morris 5 років тому +1

      What I like so much about the Mazda3 is that you get the naturally aspirated 2.5L motor and the body style. I am currently driving the 2006 Mazda3 5sp sedan and wanted to buy a new Mazda this year but they are not offering the manual in either the 3 or 6 sedan!!! Really pissed me off! I don't know if I will take the 5sp hatchback or the automatic sedan or neither one! My 2006 has been very reliable and I still enjoy driving it even though it only has the 2.0L motor. It is still very enjoyable to drive.

    Got the 2018 LX Coupe model a couple weeks ago. Black colour and 6 speed standard. Absolutely love that car. I recommend it to anyone who's looking for a new car. Definitely worth the money and it's crazy fun to drive. Probably gonna stick with Honda when it comes to vehicles. My old car was a Honda Civic as well. CRV's are nice too but don't think they come with a manual transmission. It's too bad because if they did, I would've maybe gotten one someday. Drove a CRV before as well and loved it.

    Holy crap, this is the best video yet! I don't even care about the car, but you just next-leveled it with the Turbowski intro. HO LEE COW that was brilliant. Civic is impressive and thanks for the balanced review- but is really worth almost $30K?! I remember when Civics were half that. They give you more now, but damn... CVT and turbo.. this is not the bulletproof Hondas that will last forever like the old days...

      Car journalists have to say what the MSRP of the car is. You can get a 16/17 Touring for around 26k out-the-door in most places. I paid 24,100 OTD for my 2016 EX-L Sedan with a few accessories.

    Savagegeese, I'm impressed that you are totally honest with the handling aspects of the civic. Trust me, you are one of the very few who drive the car and tell it like it truly is.
    Based on your review, it looks like the new Civic is a great car that probably needs some of the minor-medium flaws worked out. Honda has made such a major change to this car I'm definitely curious to see if they fix them in the next year or two.
    My take: If you're buying new just get the LX hatchback in Manual, buy and install your own 7 inch car stereo. This keeps the cost around 20K. I see no reason to pay more than that for these Civic's.

      That's interesting to hear. I still cling to my 20 year old LS Teg that keeps on trucking totally stock. I am gentle to it but when I want 7k+ to 2nd or 4th gear muckracking around like an ass I can get it. This is 20 years however. I prefer primitive but if I can have more fun... Does Honda keep its acronym namesake with post modern Civics -- "Hold on, not done accelerating"?
      90's NSX is still on the table though. It's such a dream to be in and drive.
      One day there will be a car to rule them all... mostly because you aren't driving it and instead programming parameters. A weird feeling to consider.
      At some point cars driven by the meat limbs of people will not be street legal.

      +MotoBoy Maybe, but I think its more how message gets delivered. This is a very popular mainstream car, so I could probably make a standalone 15 minute video complaining about the CVT, understeer, infotainment, no more NA, but well that would end badly.

    • @DearMajesty
      @DearMajesty 8 років тому +2

      savagegeese Haha yup, just evaluating it for what it is. It's no sportscar, but they put all this effort into making it look aggressive/different and yet it lacks any sport and thus character imo...just another good commuter. The interior is genuinely nice though. The understeer you're talking about is something that's going to be present in all cars from the latest M3 to my Sonata. It's all in the name of safety...understeer is far safer than oversteer and it's just something that you have to accept nowadays.. Fuck that piece of shit CVT though. My Sonata comes with a fucking DCT (it's almost sporty!) and I bought that car for 17.5k before taxes. I know what you mean by the delayed throttle response....seems to be a common problem in many modern cars. Very annoying.

    the "simulated" shifting is two fold, its one to emulate a shift, obviously. and secondly it helps prevent wear on the belt/chain in the trans by closing the throttlebody and shifting the belt position while not under full load making it last longer.

    I've watched dozens of reviews of the 10th gen Civic. This is the best.
    When I bought my 2018 Civic EX-T, I was expecting the under steer. But, surprisingly I found the handling to be tight and responsive. Perhaps I drove at a fairly conservatively pace. As for the turbo lag, yes that was noticeable but expected with the CVT.
    For the money, the Civic with Turbo is nearly best in class if not best in class.

    We just bought a 2017 Civic Touring Sedan. Less than 11,000mi for 17K. Let me say this..UFB! The feel is automatically..Luxury Sport Car. I agree on some points..disable all vehicle controlled assists, they're obtrusive. Cruise control with Collision Warning at longest distance..picks up vehicles in opposite lane and auto slows vehicles "While Passing!" Unsafe. Disagree with interior media and driver control. This vehicle is 100% digital control from steering wheel, voice activation for calls and even texts! Audio controls again, while driving, very simple and 100% controllable on the wheel. Only downside.."No Mute in Drive-Thru's!" But with Bluetooth audio, pause and play easy tap when audio display on.
    Handling: First off, we're averaging 42.7mpg after 3 weeks and 2,000 miles added. When was the last time a tank of premium cost you less than $30? Drop the mic..

    I tried to buy a Civic sedan with the tech package (for my sister) in May this year. The dealer would not drop the price below list! He suggested that I get the non tech package car. Bought a Camry instead (bigger more comfortable non CVT safer, albeit boring). The tech package on the Civic is fantastic.

    Understeer can be reduced by not braking while turning. Weight transfers to the front under braking, and turning just sends that momentum to the outside of the curve, creating understeer.

    Overall a very fair and honest review! I own a 2016 Civic Sedan Touring and I think it's one of the best cars people can buy at this price. Hands down. With this being a complete re-design, they are leaving a really poorly made 9th generation Civic behind, so a hic-up or two with flaws in the info-taiment and driver assist features were kind of expected. Considering these features are unsurpassed in this 10th gen Civic. I do disagree with your opinions on this vehicles CVT. It's the best on the market from what I've gathered, but to each their own, right? Teh car gets off the line pretty quick and passing people and sustaining power on the road is impressive... And people complaining about the ass end of this car, consider this... Most cars on the road are basic as f and A LOT of car-makers copy each other's design. We all know this. But I would rather think of this design as a big middle finger to car designers who are lacking in the originality department.

    Maybe it's taken for granted these days, but... 1) does the passenger seat remember its setting when it's flipped forward for rear passenger access? It did on Neon, but it does not on Wrangler. Front passengers in Jeep have to re-adjust every time. 2) does the door handle unlock locked doors? Unlocks in e.g. Wrangler, but not in tC or xB.

    Honda definitely has a history of being more "Driver-centric" compared other economy cars in the class. I'm glad to see that remains true here from a handling standpoint. Also I think you make a good point focusing on the attention to detail and variety in the interior. It seems to be fluid without coming off as "too busy". Nooks and crannies too. My wife's Honda Pilot has the most functional space I've ever seen in a car. Honda does an incredibly good job with maximizing the usefulness of interior space.

    I took a look at the new civic when it first came out. After seeing the engine and sitting in it, I decided that it's way too messy under the hood and sitting so far down in the car isn't for me.

    Based on what I know from building an 8th gen Autocross car the front/rear disconnect feeling you're getting is from the rear motion ratio sucking.
    The rear shock mr looks to have been improved but the spring still sucks. So, with almost equal rates Honda dials in roll stiffness with the front being stiffer than the rear. I *think* the rear suspension is done this way to keep good camber control and the spring for comfort obviously.

      I replaced my Firestone FT140 all seasons with BFGoodRich Ultra High Performance All Seasons (Comp2 AS), it makes a massive difference. Turn in and grip throughout is much better. Can't wait for the 2017 Si. Might have to trade it up

      I talked about this in a video explaining the past two years of doing these reviews . cars are consumer products and to talk about them without addressing some of the negatives is dishonest I'm not making commercials or sales pitches to buy cars. There is more than enough of that out there.

    Honda needs to realize that we won't even look at their cars if they don't have physical knobs and buttons on the stereo. We went through this back in the 1980's with receiver manufacturers when digital tuners replaced analog ones. They eventually figured it out and knobs and buttons came back. But it was such a pain while it lasted. Those who don't learn from history are destined to repeat it, Honda.
