It got cold again here and the rain started back up. Maybe I'll get lucky and the weather will be golf worthy this weekend. Tough conditions out there Simon but at least you got out there and played a round. Its still early so its better to go ahead and get your bad shots out of the way. I'm liking that 9 iron chip shot you got in the bag, I may have to try it on those tough yardage approach shots.
We have had rain all week Mark and we played yesterday in a 3 club wind. It was murder. Can we have some spring now please? I'll tell you why I was hitting that long chip and run, it's because I didn't trust my sand wedge. I would of hit it so fat. But it's a good shot to have and sometimes easier to get close than a sand wedge. We get a break in the weather tomorrow and I can get 9 in after work if I run round.
@@thehairygolfer Its suppose to freeze tonight and tomorrow here but at least the daylight saving time is finally here and we can get some twilight golf in. Does your sand wedge have a lot of bounce? I had to get another wedge a few years ago because the ground here use to be solid as a rock. I would top so many shots with it so I got one with less bounce. That looked a chilly one to say the least! You're striking the ball well off the tee. I wouldn't worry about a few fat shots this time of year, its much harder to get a clean contact from the fairway in this weather. A contrast to this week last year, when it was wonderfully sunny and up in the high 60s!
This time last year I was on the other side of the world and complaining it was too hot. I haven't played much so you get what you get. I played yesterday and it was just the same including the score.

Is James giving putting lessons anytime soon 'cos I could do with the help!!! Well done, you do look absolutely frozen, but a birdie is a nice way to end! Yes, I see what you mean about bunkers and parts of the fairway, but those greens are interesting, and the contours of the course are interesting too! At least it doesn't seem to be a flat, boring "there and back" Home Counties type of course, which is a big thumbs up from me!!! The other nice thing is that we saw no-one other than the 3 of you. So no more 5 hour, friendly, rounds!!!! Have you thawed out properly yet???
I could use a putting lesson too. I can't get the ball to the hole. It's not a flat course at all. It is even hillier than Lilleybrook and has far more sloping lies. We had a group behind us, 2 ball, we let them through on 11. Yesterday was not so good. We teed off an hour later behind some visitors who were beginners. They were not ready for a golf course and had no idea they are supposed to call people through when all 4 of them are looking for balls. Gloucester is anything but boring. @@thehairygolfer I get that totally. Home courses are all very well but they do pale after a time as you know exactly what club to take from wherever! That's why, what you do, by playing courses without driver or as someone trying to break 100 is fascinating. As I tell you (probably too often!) the video you did at Tewkesbury in the snow, where you showed the difference teeing off on the same hole with driver/fairway wood/hybrid was eye-opening, made me think, quite deeply as I'm a "driver unless...." and got me hooked to the channel as, as far as I'm aware, that is a unique perspective on a UA-cam channel (certainlyfor us old gits!). You've got all that to do again around Gloucester (including Break 90, Break 80, Break 70, Break 60! etc!). I actually found one of the most interesting videos at Lilleybrook was the "3 clubs and a putter", as it showed a different approach to the question (which is why I like to play that competition around my home course as, all of a sudden, I'm learning about my course through a different eye!!!). I'm also looking forward to the "chipping" video to those greens. That should be fun as the greens don't look simple (and, despite it being March, look in decent condition and are plenty fast enough to cause a problem or two!!!). Looks like some interesting times to come!!! @Neville Hubbard I can hit it 300. The hard part is getting the traffic to stop on the M5 for a minute or two. I try and show different types of shot, especilly with the wind blowing. I was thinking about the 14th at Gloucester on Sunday while listening to Crossfield's hack it out podcast. It was about short par 5s and how amateurs just push too hard on them because we think they're easy holes. The average 5hc player loses something like 0 .2 shots on these holes because they're chasing birds and end up making mistakes. I like your approach on this hole and not taking a driver to avoid the rough, I've had nightmare holes there having to shoot backwards from being down the hill on the left. I played this day at the Forest of Dean and the temperature alone was certainly taking at least 1 club off the ball, they werent traveling.
The 14th can be a nightmare. The landing strip is so tight. OB right and if you've hit driver left the trees are too tall to get over. I know from the white tee I might need a 3 wood if it's blowing but I think just get on the flat, get it 180 more up the hole and wedge it on. I have been on 2 with driver, 3wood but it just isn't worth it. A very long time ago I was playing with a 3 handicap in a medal. We got to the 17th and I hit 3 wood over the corner a bit and he hit a 7 iron to the corner. I asked him why and he said he couldn't make enough birdies on the hole to counteract all the doubles he got by going for it. A very wise man! It was warmer yesterday but too windy to take the camera out. Going to try 9 after work tomorrow and run round.
@thehairygolfer 17 is a bit of a gamble if you go for it. I've lost many balls there. I agree it is easier to make a double there than a birdie. I have a hypothesis that higher handicappers can just take more risks because it hurts their card less. Then your mid handicapper to around your 5 handicapper need to play sensible golf reduce double to not make the doubles. But somewhere low 2-5hc to go much lower they need to need to risk it and just have an amazing recovery game. The really low hc golfers I see can have days where there games blow up in both directions.

@@thehairygolfer I look forward to you filming a few rounds in April/May. I suppose it begs the question of why you ever left Gloucester in the first place?
@@davidwalters313 The owners at the time let it go. It was being poorly managed. I fancied a change. Now it's being leased by the members from the owners and it's getting back to where it needs to be. It had to be redisgned as the owners wanted some of the land. Houses possibly. The club now runs it and is making a healthy profit whereas before it was making a loss. They announced it was going to close and the Pro managed to put forward a package to rent it. I think they have a 25 year lease.
I have had enough of this cold weather myself... you are a brave man filming right now. how are you enjoying Gloucester GC? I may come up for a charity day there later this year.
Hi Oggie, at the moment I'm contemplating a society day type of thing at West Monmouthshire. But with inflation I'm very short of funds and not sure what I can do. I wont know until later in the year. Not sure how to collect green fees and the like or just to get people to book with the course direct.
But you are welcome for a knco anytime you want at Gloucester. It's a bit hilly but you can always take a buggy. Cheers
I don’t like cold weather golfing, damn ball feels like hitting a rock and I feel it from my fingers to my toes…🥶🥶🥶🥶
Gets worse as you get older. Bloody hate it now.
@@thehairygolfer , I’m 63 , not a spring chicken for sure 😂😂😂
@@TWTexasA1 I see guys out in Thailand playing golf at age 82 as if they were spring chickens. Something about the food and the weather keeping them young. Winter shortens our lives!
Here it's been 30-33°c I'm heading to the golf course in about 10mins to remind myself why I hate golf😂 and drink beer
I hate you 🤣🤣🤣🤣 But this time last year I was having a 69 with a cute 28 year old caddie. Beat that! 😜😜😜
@@thehairygolfer Don't mention the Lady Boy
@@Berry-fr5wj Got to spank the ladyboy
@@thehairygolfer You Libertine !
@@thehairygolfer you forget I'm in the Philippines I have a cute 22yr old as my regular caddy😁
Well I was smiling Simon, don't know about you. Actually it didn't look too bad a round. Ron
It was a big number Ron. We played yesterday and that was a big number too! Good to be out with the kids though. Windy yesterday but far warmer. I think we have rain now for 2 weeks.
Who said the English are obsessed with the weather?
Small observation having watched a few of your vlogs.
If you have a fault it seems to be coming across with driver?
Is that fair causing a slice?
So it seems to me if possible, you need to get ypur left shoulder pointing down more towards the ball in the backswing. Your shoulders look a bit too level at the top of the swing?
Bit of a cheek from me because you are a far lower handicap than I was at your age.
Barry, not cheeky at all. The swing is a mess and what you say is spot on. I'm going to start practicing this week even though I might not end up playing this coming weekend. Looks like rain for 2 weeks. Cheers
@@thehairygolfer possibly shoulders a bit open at address? Feet in line though.
Here endeth the lesson:)
@@barryglynnglynn2841 There is a bit of that going on. I think I need to watch my lesson videos before I play again. Get some reminders from Matt.
Nothing like hitting a shit shot into a bunker then barely getting out. Now you’re pissed off and the ultimate humiliation of having to rake the bunker. Been there done that
How do you hit a decent tee shot and walk off with a 6? It's so poor all you can do is laugh at yourself. Or go mad!
No winter gloves and no proper hat at 3 degrees. You maniac.
I wear double gloves probably up to 10 and always in rainy conditions, it works just the same once you get used to it. Used to be very particular with putting and chipping glove-less but now don't care at all.
It's a tough job but someone has to do it 🤣🤣🤣
@@niandralades2 My Dad never wore a glove. But I think that was because he was a bit tight. I've not used the rain gloves myself. I prefer to be indoors! Yep, I'm a dry weather golfer.
@@thehairygolfer Aren't we all? Hey, at least your course is open. Here we are still off carry-around mats and play to winter greens for probably a couple of weeks more. Not very motivating.
@@niandralades2 Carry round mats are no fun at all. I can understand the lack of motivation, when we are on temp greens I can't be bothered to putt most of the time, or chip. I hate it.
I am definitely waiting for the weather to get a bit more consistent. But I hope to get out to the Par 3 course at least by the end of the month!! Yeah playing in cold conditions really effects the ball flight and when wind is envolved as well makes for a tough round!! Still thanks for filming and uploading!!⛳🏌♂
My golf was miserable yesterday Zax. Same score but for different reasons. I've got to start practising now. Triple your handicap is not a lot of fun. I think I can get out for 9 after work tomorrow though. Got to play more.
