Why Seniors Quit Golf
Переглядів 48 тис.21 день тому
Some people think seniors quit because they are getting old and the old legs wont carry them anymore. Nope. They quit because they are forced to play 6400 yards with a handicap in the 30's and 40's and that is not enjoyable. Go overseas and you can play 4800 yards par 72 and enjoy your golf. Why can't we do that here? The Herefordshire www.herefordshiregolfclub.co.uk/ Purple Planet www.purple-p...

    I began playing the forward tees when I turned 50. Not because of age, but because of my lack of skill. 19 years later, I still cannot break 90 on a par 72 course. I am about to give up golf for good, as I can no longer hit any golf shot over 100 yards. I am in really decent shape, but my swing mechanics are horrible and apparently unfixable (I have taken many, many lessons trying to fix my swing).

    First time I have seen your video and it's been fun. I'm almost 76 and play of 21 nowadays. Our course is 6300 white, 6100 yellow and 5678 red. Our little group play of the yellow and I very rarely get on in regulation. Occasionally I play on my own and so use the reds and it's far enjoyable. On October the first everyone plays on the blue course for the winter and then I am really looking forward to it. As a single figure golfer who's skill set is much better than mine length is a bigger issue than it is for me. But as I now don't play any competition golf, I have come to peace with my lot and enjoy and will continue to play till the end. In the last 4 years I have lost my two dearest friends and I am much better of than them

    I fully understand your point of view. I'm fortunate enough to play golf in Sweden. Most golf courses have left the mens and women's tee behind them and now all tees are based of course length and I can choose the one that is the best fit. I can now play from a tee where I with good shots can reach most holes on par. You are absolutely right , this is more enjoyable.

    The video emphasised how vital the short game is for getting a good score. You can make up from poor shots by finishing well. Fortunately older golfers can develop the short game to make up for a loss of distance from earlier shots. I noticed you regularly use very few clubs around the green. I use my 5H, 6H, 8 H as well as irons 9 to SW. My selection depends on what the ground, slope , distance etc. I have to play. As an 81 year old , 26 handicap golfer would you advise me to reduce my choice of clubs. I used to use a 42* chipper, but that limited my choice. Thank you.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer 2 дні тому

      Hello Alan, I had no idea what would happen and it just turned into a chip n putt video by chance. Much of videos do that, start one thing and end up another. Yes, I do just use 2 clubs round the green, that's all I have time to practice. I figure be good with 2 rather than average with 4. We are all different though and I would never tell anyone to not use 4 clubs or more. If I was to offer any advice I'll stick with what I've said several times in different videos. One club to go up to a raised green or over a bunker. One club to run out. Plus a 3rd for further out. Then fiddle with ball position until you are happy. Back in the old days Pros would use a load of different clubs. Now they all seem to use a 60 for everything. I think osmewhere in the middle for us. Is that okay?

    • @alangoudie2299
      @alangoudie2299 2 дні тому

      Thank you for your advice. I will give it a try. Today I played 14 practice holes trying to improve my fade instead of a draw. No pressure .Average driver distance 148 yards. If I had been putting in a card for a handicap it would have worked out as 16 off the red tees. Choice play off the reds & score well or struggle to beat 100 off the yellow tees. Your 7 iron goes a lot further than my 125 yard 5 & 7woods. You play a different game to me. HOWEVER I HAVE NOT DIED YET & STILL PLAYING. Tonight I played 2 hours of single table tennis to round off the day. That is why I only played 14 holes in the afternoon. I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR COMMON SENSE ADVICE, WHICH IS DEFINITELY ENCOURAGING ME. Tomorrow afternoon 2 & a half hours of lawn tennis doubles. OVER THE BUNKER IS MY ALIEN 60 * LOB WEDGE. NEED TO SORT OUT THE OTHER 2 CLUBS. POSSIBLY USE MY 42 * CLEVELAND SMART SOLE CHIPPER FOR MOST CHIP SHOTS. Have you heard the saying He's got all the gear but no idea. FURTHER OUT 6 H OR 5H.

I played with my nieces husband who had just taken up the game. I turned up with my battery trolley, all the gear, matching bag as you have seen and he gave me heartache. All the gear and no idea. I told him I was a 5 handicap which didn't mean a thing to him. Par 5 1st got a birdie. Very short par 4 next, 4 iron and gap wedge, got a birdie and it started to dawn on him he may have been wrong. I ran out at 7 over as the course gets harder. A number I was very pleased with. Made me laugh, don't know what he shot, a zillion I think. He quit golf shortly after. It's easier on the play station apparently.

    I found on the internet where the length of the course for an individual is based on how far you hit your 5 iron. I'm 74 and was able to calculate at my course that I should play the "forward" tees. But that was a little too short for me, so I move back one set of tees on the par 3s and the total distance is perfect for the length of a course for me. It makes it fair an enjoyable!

    Great vid! I laughed so hard about the "tap-in" on 17th. Unless im coming over a bunker or something i tend to use the same club, 8 iron for all my bump and runs, i noticed you switch clubs according to the slope uphill or downhill etc. I kinda know how the ball is going to land and run with the 8 iron every time whereas i would have to learn 2 or 3 other clubs for the same shot. Im not saying either way is wrong or right or better it just works for me. Btw ive got a pretty decent short game. My putting was dire for a while it just left me and i was missing 2 footers and leaving lag putts halfway. I had a putting lesson from the pro and omg! Hi Finbar, nice little cut off there on 17. Because the camera makes me slow I just want to keep moving so sometimes I just don't finish it off. As I practice 4 footers all the time I know I don't miss them often. I knock a lot in back handed or one handed. I just use 2 clubs then I only have to practice 2 clubs. The one I got wrong was on 18 when I used the sandy instead of the pitch. That was a mistake. I always say just use 2 clubs, one up and over and the other run out. It doesn't matter which 2 clubs people use. Not going to tell anyone to stop using their favourite club. I had an issue with short ones a long time ago, I just wasn't commiting to a line properly. I'd over borrow and then hit it through the break. Long putts I think is tension and I think that tension comes from not practicing short putts. Inside 4 feet. Just a guess. Cheers

If you want a chat it's hairy.golfer@btinternet.com Time is always an issue but it's mostly weather. I can't record in wind or rain. And the next thing is a quiet golf course. The camera slows me down. Typically I play 18 holes in 3 hours 50 minutes. I can't play on a saturday morning amongst a full golf course. I would be a pain to everyone else. That is the hardest part of filming. The forecast for the next 2 weeks is pretty dire. Of course it's dry now as I'm at work. You can't win! At least you are local which means we have a chance. To be that consistent throughout your round is great to watch. And your chipping process is so simple - straight back, straight through, bingo!!! This was before the lesson, I'm worse now. Hitting it sideways and losing balls. But it will get better. I hit 3 easy drives at the end and that's it. Bizarre.

    You need to work on your short game you should be looking to hole chips and your putting is abysmal that can be rectified on the carpet if you have about 8ft and you have a small shiny button. 5puts with left hand only then 5 with the right hand then 10 puts with both hands. if you miss then you start again its hard its difficult but if you start in the winter by the next spring you wont think anything under 8ft and 30 footers will have the chance of going in the following year and your mates will be giving you 5 footers and a reputation is born.

    On the 9th, it's not a lucky bounce if you play for it! Like I said in a recent comment, if my long game isn't firing, the wedges and putter can rescue me, and that's what happened here. BTW - which Mizuno putter are you using? I do like the look of it.

      I've got a fair bit of experience using the rough as a brake. The idea that you should land every chip on the green is wrong. Needs must when you're short sided. Got to chip and putt, I was using most of the face of the driver and quite a few other clubs. That round had 85 written all over it. But there you go. Putter is a Domino from 1990 model 8811. They do come up on ebay but they look like they have been dragged behind a car the length of the M1. I have no idea why people don't look after their gear. It cost me £35 which was a lof of money back then. I'll never change it. A Scottie isn't going to make me better. Cheers

    We have green tees here in County Dublin , ahead of the yellow ones and behind the red (ladies) tees,but nobody plays them! Our club (Skerries GC in Co Dublin) is top heavy with members in their 70's (and 80's) but only a tiny minority will even look at the green tees!! How silly is that? with the young bucks hitting the ball up to 300 meters ( or so, I don't know but stratospheric anyway) yet we (and I include myself) never even consider the green tees. "I guess it's just an ego problem" as the song says. PS , you talk about long par fours, both the third 391 meters and the fifth 395 meters (off the whites) are par fours!

      Trouble with being in Ireland or Britain is if we play forwards we get ripped in the bar after! The banter is the same. Ego is an issue. Whne i have the choice I play upto 6500 on a dry course and 6000 on a wet course. But so many people need 5000. I've never hit it 300 on a flat hole with no wind to help me. I need a bit of elevation, some wind behind and a baked fairway. I never used to worry about 395 metres. Now I do. Our longest is 460 yards in a competition, 455 where I normally play it from. It's getting a bit of a stretch now. Cheers

I came to golf 2&half years ago ( now approaching 71yrs old ) I have no thoughts of how far I use to hit the ball so it's all new. I have often thought how the top pro players would fair on the courses we play, no practise rounds no caddies or green books just turn up and play. Wow that is late to the game. Better than rotting on the sofa though in front of the tv. I wonder how they would cope on slow and bumpy greens. Plus the out of bounds so close to fairways. They would have to reign in the driver a bit. But in reality they take apart a short course. Would be fun to watch. AP? I'm going to see if I can work out where that is. Of course, Alexander Park. I drive past it. If the weather had been kinder this year I would of played it already. It does help being at a tough course, your handicap will travel well. Thanks for joining the regulars.
