Is the 'BETTER BG' Worth It? | Daiwa SALTIST Spinning Overview
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 вер 2018
- Top-down overview of the Daiwa Saltist saltwater-rated spinning reel ... what many regard as the 'Better BG'. While it shares 95% of the parts of the universally praised Daiwa BG, the Saltist levels up with MAGSEAL, handle washer, 2 additional CRBB's, and a pretty sweet hollow ss Air Bail. But are the upgrades worth twice the price? Watch to find out!

EDIT: to confirm, total differences between the Saltist and BG are the Saltist's MAGSEAL (main shaft, roller bb), a Zaion Air Rotor (not plastic), 2 total additional CRBB's, and the Air Bail. do you think all that is worth Daiwa charging twice the price of a BG?
Nice to hear your opinion and why on the comparison of the two Daiwa reels. Liked your overall view as well. Thanks.
literally just bought the salsist 5000 last weekend...been catching mad rock fish and lingcod in santa cruz and i LOVE this reel!!
Setting in Salinas right now looking up fishing charters in Santa Cruz. Lol
Just ordered the bg and no regrets from what I see in the reviews
This is an excellent detailed review. Helped make my mind up... BG for me. Like you say I can get 2 different sizes if I wanted.
this was some great information
I'm more of a penn guy but I did buy this exact reel for summer flounder fishing here in new jersey and used it this past summer it performed flawlessly I would definitely recommend
right on man. agreed, the BG/Saltist series makes for great jigging spinners. powerful and balanced right.
Saltwater Angler did u use the saltist or bg?
You have the best reviews! Keep it up.
I bought a saltist 4000 and a BG 5000 both new models and both reels got dunked in the salt water and the MAGSEALED SALTIST FROZE UP! Both cleaned and washed equally and the BG is working like it’s new! I THREW AWAY MY SALTIST!
Bs
Ive got the same reels but ive fell off the rocks and into the water , mine survived and its still smooth and have taken it apart, no signs of corrosion. 🤣🙄
The BG is still a nice good reel for the price after a few yrs of surf fishing its looking old but still smooth .
No waysss
Bros lying
Good work here! The only thing left out is the tear-down. Always want to see inside for plastic parts...etc.
This is a great review. I love my BG setup, but I just got a new rod and need a new reel. I'm leaning toward another BG after this review.
thx! BG is so versatile imo that unless your next setup is strictly for surfcasting (where the Saltist is worth twice the price), the BG will meet your needs.
@@ishwithfish what is better for surf casting please
@@danielmedhurst5737 the saltist is a better reel for surf fishing because of the mag seal but they made a new reel called the daiwa bg mq it a upgraded from the bg in my opinion it’s better then the saltist because of the body it has but it does not have mag sealed it has rubber seal but for surf casting only go for the saltist or bg mq they will just last longer because of those seals that the bg doesn’t have
@@JesusLopez-vt6qf thanks and I was looking at the daiwa bg magsealed that’s my budget 6500 or the 8000 I still don no what to get in size for uk beaches that can cast out to rays and for cod and eels conger I don’t no how the 6500 and 8000 will cast in different to the size the 8000 looks big on videos and I don’t need that much line but will it inhance my casting I will be using 17 to 20 1b mono with a tapered leader to 70 1b ?
@@danielmedhurst5737 yeah no problem but for your size it depends how strong they are and how deep they are I don’t know much about eels and rays in the uk but the daiwa saltist is like a 7500 for the penn but you would have to see with someone who has fished them before
Saltist is so nice. Its my ravorite reel
Daiwa reps have come out saying that the wire bail is much stronger than the air bail. I have had some problems with the air bail as well.
I have the BG 5000
I have a buddy that has the Saltist 4000
Can’t go wrong with either. I prefer my Bg 5k, but I’m biased and I haven’t tried the saltist in a 5k size and or bigger. Only tried the 4K, and it was pretty nice.
I have a Saltist 5000 and a BG 4500. I’m starting to use my BG more than the Saltist. I do believe magseal is overpriced.
I purchased the 6500 LTD along with the matching saltiest PE 6 rod mainly to target kingfish and tuna off the rocks. I haven’t spooled it or used yet but I can’t wait to have my first cast with it. What really bought me was the body and the 15kg drag and line capacity. I want to spool it with maybe 65lb braid. Thanks for your review really enjoyed it.
this reel is so powerful and smooth. fair price.
i heard from friends ...the only problem is..bail roller bearing....
i used first model catalina 4500...after almost a decade....no problem at all.
I like anti reverse switches on spinning reels. I won't buy a reel without one. Daiwa makes larger spools which helps you cast farther covering more water. Graphite and metal alloys are not plastic. Stronger materials that are lighter is the trend which is good.
I have previous gen Saltist in 5000H. Smooth like a baby's bottom and built like a tank, fast enough to put 8oz sinker on a plane. I use ballistic (first mag seal gen) on my light action rod. Both are great, but where you need sheer power Saltist is it.
I bought many reels over time and I fish them hard, I still have most of them in working condition even cheaper line once, so I would say if you are money sensitive get the BG series and it would work fine for you otherwise Saltist is great or Saltiga if you can do it without getting divorced.
One thing I would strongly recommend, do not try to utilize one reel for both light and heavy applications. You may not damage your gear but you certainly will not enjoy it. Also, pay attention to the size/weight. I would think the internals are very different between 4000 and 4500as the weight increase ~7oz, even more so at 6500. I am considering you are bait fishing otherwise you have to match your gear to your application a lot more specifically see Rick 0045 - 2 comments below
great feedback, appreciate it!
@@ishwithfish Thanks. If you have any info on where the extra weight comes from on these step up sizes I am curious to know. Also, I could use a better handle as the stock on Saltist could be a pain on long days, what would you recommend?
Nice review, thank you, but has not influenced me since I held and evaluated both BG and Saltist for a long time this week. Tomorrow I’m buying Saltist (3000). The decision was pretty easy for me, but having much more difficulty deciding on a rod. Rod prices seem to vary wildly and far more choices than reels.
I like the blue color
me too. i wish the ballistic came in that color scheme🔥🔥
8:00 about that switch.....I'm against em...but they way it's done on the bg/ saltist/ ballistic etc....isn't awful. Behind the switch is just perimeter body on body. Water and sand would have the same chance to get into the gear case as it would any where else around the body perimeter. Only under pressure would it be able to get up the switches shaft to the underside of the ar clutch (and there is grease and a tight tolerance to get by....so it's not really a problem. A bit of grease there will all but seal it off (but the rest of the body doesn't have that soooooo...yeah...) KEEP UP THE GREAT CONTENT BROTHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thx for the knowledge and support braddah! good to know saltwater splashing up into the reverse switch doesn't lead to (direct) accumulation in the body. i'm still wary of switches though, my older daiwa reels tend to rotate backwards now even with the switch off, i wonder if it's emulsified water/grease in the clutch.
Hey Tackle Advisors... If I'm remembering correctly, in your video of the saltist vs the slammer, I recall you mentioning that the gears in the saltist were made of cast zinc, but Ish here is saying that they're machined aluminum... did I misunderstand whay you were saying in your video... or
Anyway keep up the good work.. and I mean both of you guys
Unless there was a mid model refresh in the black and blue saltist. They are the same exact gear material as used in the bg. The saltist back bay use machined aluminum but lack the higher grade ball bearings and size offerings. There was some mis information early on in their respective life cycles pointed out by alan hawk where daiwa claimed machined alu main gears.....Hope that clears things up.
NP! Does the issue you have only happen in colder temps? Or is it all the time. Chances are you're spot on with the emulsified loooob contaminating the clutch :)
Or just lube that got in and with that clutch design..it's a pain to get out and off of the top and bottom of the cylinders. Which causes them not to move in and out freely. (most think it's the rolling edge of the cylinders that can't be lubed..when it's actually the top and bottoms that slow their actuation. **stick that feather in your cap for whenever your in your reels :)
The switch is the main reason I got the BG in the 4500. Trade off for no switch but more OZ to the reel. Lol, main reason why my reels or more on the shimano lineup. My spheros and gosa weighs less and are sealed then my heavier BG that gets the job done just as well. I count on the BG for when I just want to tank on a fish. Nice review
thx for the feedback. curious, what do you use the switch for? i never use my switches unless i'm storing the reels and i want the line and rotor lined up perfectly lol
Ish With Fish what I meant was I got the 4500 BG because it doesn’t have the anti reverse switch. 4000 does and I wish it didn’t. The only reel I’ll consider buying with an anti reverse would be the theory by Daiwa. #tightlines
@@saltylawaia8958 ahhh gotcha braddah. yeah i like that my 4000 Penns don't have that switch. i feel safer standing in the surf for some reason.
First.............................but forgot to hit enter.............................
Have to be honest though the spinfisher VI blows the BG out of the water now. BG was the best until the release of the VI
What makes it better mateM
Every time I think about going from a BG to a Saltist, I do a little research, and I end up with another size BG ^ * )....I am literally sitting here looking at a BG 4000 I have now had for almost three years, its been waded, fished from bridges, and flat boats, and the thing still looks like it just came outta the box! I'm in Florida, so MAYBE the bigger air-bail may be better up north (50 degree water??? o no), but the BG 1-piece design bail wire seems like more of an advantage than a deficit down here...I can see banging that air-bail into a concrete bridge rail and having it fail at that area where it connects near the end. Any way you go, these Daiwas are ALL the best bang for the buck out there, with the BG series seeming like a total steal for what you get for the money. Daiwa likes to have these incremental improvements as you go up the lineup, like the newer BG MQ, but, hey, they really seem to have gotten it right with the base model BG. Thanks for post here!
great feedback, thx!
I’m thinking of getting a daiwa bg magseieled 8000 but don’t no if to get the daiwa Saltist 8000 what’s the difference and how comes the spool comes off the Saltist but not the bg magseieled?
Does the saltist spool fit on a bg of same size
The BG is a great reel, the best part no Magseal. My 2500 has hauled in tons of fish, big bass, pike, walleyes, catfish, rainbow trout, everything. Smoothly.
I own 8 BGs and 3 Saltists, and trust me, with 2 extra BBs, the Saltist is much smoother. 😁
I feel that the drag on the Saltist is better. I locked the drag on both the BG 8000 and the Saltist 8000 and couldn't turn the spool on the Saltist, but could on the BG. The main shaft on the Saltist has a 360 degree thread and is thicker than the BG's.
great feedback, thx!
Are you going to be able to fish ether of the saltist? Curious how some casting time would affect your opinion.
probably not with either since they're on their way back to the owners. i did fish a BG 4000 for total 10 hours, i liked it ok but had problems with the bail mech spring and bail itself; the spring is on the softer side and thin bail wire is uncomfortable in cold numb hands. i assume the Saltist would be a more comfortable experience plus you get the added protection of magseal. my go to surf casting reel is my Clash 4000, love it. i DID take the BG on a charter though, and it was great. powerful and smooth pulling up fat rockfish. great boat spinner.
Does the saltist spool fit on the bg magsealed 3k
I am not happy with my Daiwa salties 4000 as after a year using in salt water, tgere is an issue. When I active the Reverse stopper it makes noise. I think its mechanism has been affected by the salt water. It is really on my nerve
I'm looking to build a surf fishing setup. I'm debating between this and the BG. Can you rinse a BG off after use to get the salt water off?
Yep, set your hose on mist and you can knock off the external salt on any reel. The big advantage of the saltist is the magseal at the main shaft, prevents salt from trickling into body. If you fish the surf regularly, the saltist is worth it.
What 10ft rod can i use with a BG 4000 reel. Also what braid would you recommend.
I also need a suggestion for a light set up.
Thanks and cheers
St Croix Mojo Surf, 30lb braid
I got 6500 and Love it.. I caught 24 25lbs + Strpers in one day and it handle no problem.
daayum sounds like heaven!
Yes it was 2017 was my Epic year ..
Wow nice. Were you fishing the Canal?
I considered this real but the slammer 3 in my opinion has been so successful for me that I just completely revamped my Arsenal with them
awesome feedback, thx. i reviewed the slammer iii too, great reel.
The saltist has a thicker bail arm than the BG too.
sweeeeeeet
is it possible to change the handle in the 3000 size? i want to change ot to a power knob.. i know you cant do it with the bg..
I doubt it, the bg and saltist handle are basically the same. try an aftermarket screw in knob.
I would say the Diawa BG, along with the Penn Battle are probably the best dollar for dollar value for saltwater fishing. Dont know much about the saltist. I'm going to have to investigate that one.
Penn battle is hot garbage next to the daiwa bg
@@ramboassgoblin you just suck at fishing

Are u sure about the automatic tournament drag on this reel?
yep, it's heavily advertised as featuring ATD.
I love my BG...I surf fish for perch and stipers In the monterey area. The BG is smooth and a work horse at a good price point. Button down the drag when you rinse it off and it will last. Loosen the drag when you store it.👍🤙🤙🤙
great maintenance tip, thx man!
So can you rinse a BG reel after fishing with it?
would this one work for car snaring? I just bought one but thinking of maybe getting the bigger 6500 since its only about 40 dollars more
imo saltist for snaring is overkill, a 6500 bg is good enough👍🏼
For a reel that’s over $200, it should have a quality main gear drive, but it doesn’t. It’s zinc. Stick to BG for that matter. “Tackle advisors” here on UA-cam, does a side by side comparison to the Saltist and the penn slammer3. Go check out the difference.
Jmo. But the saltist is over priced. In aus we double plus for the mag seal compared to the bull it proof big series. It’s not worth it
I just can't pay double for the Mag seal... I just have to hope for the best with grease.
I got my Saltist 4500 for $145
@@Stephens_,
Nice...how did you get it so cheap? It's a solid reel. I've caught several Yellowtail Jacks up to 15lbs and countless bonito up to 7lbs last season on it.
Which reel is better Ballistic lt 2500 or saltist 2500?
depends. ballistic lt for super light setups targeting med game, saltist if you want something more rugged targeting big game. both very good reels.

i do too, i has daiwa bg4000 with super slick 8, oh man, i dont know, its so smooth and lightweight, very very smooth, i will buy super slick 8 for daiwa spinning reel
what you guys think: Penn Slammer III or daiwa saltist???
slammer 3 all day. i had a saltist for one week of kayak fishing and it froze
Penn slammer with that brass main gear drive out performs the Saltist. The Saltist line lay is better though.
Made the mistake 😂😅 bought a 6500 which is a 8000 size In penn standards
Just a quick question I’ve got the saltist ltd 4500 amd just realised there’s no difference with the 5000 other then spool size, would I be able to fit a 5000 size spool on my 4500 body?

Any similar experience ? And any suggestions ?
You are a phenomenon .. Congratulations on your channel .. it's a pass. I would like to ask you whether you've talked so much about the oldest reels and you've dismantled them and also the new ones in the LT range ... which is in your opinion the reel that is worth spending money on ... especially a model 3000 ?? Thanks and sigur asi
ty ty. i've broken down most of my reels for either inspection or maintenance, and the latest daiwas are very impressive. they have large main gears that are machined very well, and wear evenly. if you're looking for a recommendation, for the 3000 range, a BG is a great utility reel for most styles of fishing. if you're looking for something light, consider the fuego lt or ballistic lt, both well balanced and light. i have found daiwas and penns easy to dismantle and service, shimanos a little tougher because they seem to have tigher build tolearnces, so disassembly and reassembly takes patience and precision (that's a good thing!).
I prefer the bg ... until when surf crabbing for dungees, the waves were rough and dunked my reels
Now I can see why magseal can be worth it
Oh and the main gear is zinc, not aluminum,,where do you get your info from?
i recall reading other than the magseal and 2 additional CRBB's, the saltist shares the same internals as the BG which has a big machined aluminum main. i think it was alan hawk that disputes this claim and says it's actually zinc, but i'm going by what i've personally seen inside my BG 4000.
It’s zinc
@@NasalObstruction is zinc good? Is it there for corrosion?
@@ishwithfish it is Zinc as it is for the Saltist Nero, BG, BG JDM, BG Nero, BG Magsealed and the new BG MQ.

Back Bay LT is just a black Saltist with a lighter, skinnier frame (hence the LT = Light Tough moniker).
Ish With Fish thanks for responding and the information. .I purchased the back bay. It's my first diawa. .I've been very pleased. .I've fish 5 or 6 days a week and so far it's handled everything I've thrown at it.. unlike the battle 2..
Do you think it's basically an upgraded BG with MagSealed?
yup! i consider it a surf-tuned BG.
Love the BG but for $60 more the Spinfisher VI is way better.
The Daiwa Saltist or the new Bg MQ 2020 ???
saltist better, smooth, strong, true. i bought bgmq, but it is like shimano,

true that!
So true. I was fishing with my dad and brother. He and I are tackle snobs with thousands invested in gear, and dad shows up with a Walmart combo costing $35. Guess who caught an 80lb tarpon that night. I still won't fish with crap equipment though, but dad always ribbed us about his two ball bearing reel getting the job done
I fished next to a local who used a wooden stick with a piece of fishing line tied to the end, using a wine cork as a float. The guy caught fish and maybe even more fish than I did. Granted I was 10 YO with a bamboo rod and I think he did it for fun. It is a fact that more $ does not equal more < , but proper gear for the species does equal better chances and more fun. Oh and one more thing... If you are not on the water you ain't catching nothing, so stop reading and go fish
A ferrari is nicer to drive than a dodge but they both get you to the destination. I like Ferrari's
I always hate these comments. Everyone knows you don't "need" to spend this kind of money, but people want to. A $4000 car will get you to the same spot as a $20000 car. A $20 pair of shoes protects your feet just as well as a $100 pair.
daiwa saltist or shimano biomaster for shore jigging ??
Biomaster is better

@@ishwithfish cool, l hope to see that Gold Sharky review :)
i love my saltist but the one thing i hate, and i emphasize HATE, is the bail. way too easy to trip over. not enough “click”. sometimes it doesn’t stay open and i’ve had it slam shut on me, luckily no lures lost.
i think i mentioned it in other vids but i agree, compared to penns, the daiwa bail springs are kinda soft. i had a few premature trips the first few times i used a bg4000 in the surf.
The Saltist is not a sealed reel. Saltwater intrusion occurs with just simple splashing into the side plate because there is no seal on the side plate. The gear gets saltwater in it and the zinc and aluminum internals become rapidly corroded. In addition, the shim washers in the handle knob get ground up into shreds with just one use which necessitates purchasing and installing an after market knob. Lastly, you cannot line the spool with stated amount of braid because it will result in braid being caught under the spool rim and/or braid catching on the top of the spool rim; both of which cause major line tangles. You have to line the spool approximately a quarter inch away from the rim of the spool which effectively makes the line capacity a reel size smaller.
Are you sure the Saltist uses aluminum gears? The BG does use cast zinc gears! the Digigear is nothing more than a marketing word nowadays. See: www.alanhawk.com/reviews/bg16.html

Just me...I would get the Penn SS VI instead of the Saltist. The Penn SSVI 6500 and up have brass gear while the smaller models have machined aluminum gear. I do have three BGs, 4000, 4500 and 8000.
good point. ssvi almost full seals and great gears for equal/less money. esp for those yak guys that dunk their gear often.
SALTIST could be today the MOST REDUNDANT (same internal and ratio that bg, should have ALUMINUM gear= as spheros)....then saragosa 10k-20k respect to spheros (updates double brake and only 20k with backup anti-reverse system). Saltiga&catalina
(although I like this option if you do not want the most top)
You are never going to service it because you don't think water will ever get in, but one day it doe,s and then you find it has seized and needs new bearings next time you use it.
It will need all new gears.
Japanですアメリカで買うと何円なんですか?
Quality over quantity. I'd rather have two as to one that can be damaged. I think you also have to have it serviced if you want that mag sealed to be checked out.
DO NOT SCREW WITH MAG SEAL! At least that is what I was told by Daiwa rep
daiwa saltwater spinning reels are sized different than their freshwater spinning reels. you can't compare the two , size wise.
So BG has no Mag Seal? Is BG rated for salt surf fishing?
BG has no Magseal ... and that's a good thing! i think Daiwa intentionally did this because there's a huge market for utility reels that can be self-serviced easily (Magseal reels require servicing from Daiwa or using non-Daiwa spec'd 3rd party magseal-knockoff suppliers). the BG is rated for saltwater because the drag is waterproof and there may be a seal at the handle, otherwise be careful, no internal seals so it'll probably seize if gets heavily splashed or dunked.
Ok. Gearing up for Cape Cod Canal trip in 2019.
Looked at the BG 5000 and that thing is huge..looks like a stradic 6000 or 7000 if there was one.
BG 4000 looks the size of stradic fk 5000.
Thanks for info
if you're going to the canal, hear me out (i have no experience there BUT! i've worked with guys that go regularly). consider a sealed reel in the 5500 Slammer III/ 6000 Saragosa class, minimum. you need a large sealed reel that can retrieve 3-4 oz lures all day, and in the event of a 30lb+ hookup you need a big enough reel that can quickly winch it in through heavy current because you might be shoulder to shoulder with 100 guys. plus the sealing will help things in case you slip on a rock and dunk it. i think a 4000 BG or even the biggest FK might be out gunned. my friends mostly use Saltigas, older Van Staals, and Saragosas which they say are common. hope this helps, and good luck out there!
Would a 5000 ballistic LT be big enough? Maybe a 6000? Looking for something versatile for later usage in California waters.
Ballistic is mag seal..
Northeast fisherman here. Ish got it pretty much covered. Hooking up a 30lber in a heavy current is no joke. 30lber are the average here so expect bigger when they are in. I would not recommend bringing anything under 6000 size shimano reel or similar size from other brand. Sometime my 6000 Saragossa feels outgun and I bring out my vs250. You are going to have to stop the fish, winch it in and not have the opportunity to let the fish run freely as you what because your line is going to get crossed with other fishermen line and make them lose their expensive lure. Most time Fight and argument break out when this happen. The canal can get shoulder to shoulder when the report of fish are in.
Another thing I would recommend is bringing a 10.6 or longer heavy rod. You are going to be jigging or throwing 4oz to 5oz all day
I have the old one ........its a tank not a ferrari
Never used it yet made a review.
Update: Ok I stand corrected this is an overview. I searched review and this came up
hence "overview". any of my full reviews have stated usage hours and are called "reviews"👏👏
Makes sense was a good video either way
@@flyingash cool, thx man
Jay Wack some people don’t listen, just rather comment first. Smh
I just got one and I'm not that impressed, especially with the plastic drag knob and how the drag sounds.
the "better bg" is the bg magsealed reel
Just subscribed! Great in depth review and very informative! I'm about to go get my 2nd BG tomorrow for my other pole! Btw check out my channel, just starting out but I will be making custom rods!
sticking with the BG's
@@TJXHT BG
@@TJXHT yeah the gear case is aluminum the part that matters
I will stay with my 2 BG s this is just upgraded oil with magic whoo haa 🤔 no one needs that and its very difficult to buy the specific oil for these mag reels i wont be getting any of them.
keep your reels out of the water and they will last years 👍 .
I just lost a super nice fish with this reel 😡😡😡😡😡
sorry man😭
I opened a saltist their junk no brass gears at all no heavy duty nothing all looks stick with penn
MADE in China Oo. No!!!
he just compared an $800 reel to a penn battle 2 at $95
That's a saltiga. Saltist is just a step or 2 up from bg
Lol no he didn't.
I gave thumbs down cuz you were supposed to compare saltist to bg and you went on doing infomercial. Not much to gain and you lost your touch dude.
lol never said it was a 1v1 comparison, and this was an overview, not a full review. it's all in the title big guy👍
