Here's What The World's Cheapest Electric Car Is Like To Drive
Вставка

- You’ve all been so very patient, but, finally, it’s time. The world’s cheapest new electric car you can buy has been ordered from Alibaba, shipped over from China, trucked to my house, unboxed, and now it’s finally time to see if this ridiculous thing actually drives. Are you excited? Of course you are; you’re human. So go ahead and watch that video up there and see for yourself.
Like all of my experiences with the Changli so far, I’m genuinely surprised at how much better it is than I was expecting. It drives! It drives in a perfectly usable manner, not quickly at all, no, God no, but for a neighborhood vehicle, it absolutely works.
I mean, yeah, we got it stuck in the mud almost immediately, but David and I just lifted the back up onto the bricks and were good to go.

General Motors rear view camera: About $900 extra
Chinese rear view camera: Free with purchase of $900 car.
wrong, the Chinese camera does cost same as the GM one, it does however come with a new car.
bout the same quality too lol
The Japanese really know how to do stuff
Drivers with a DUI should be made to drive this for a year.
🤣🤣
With a breathilizer and public service gear.
People with DUI's should be taking the bus or riding their bicycle or maybe taking a cab. I'd much rather be hit by a bicycle than by a car period. 🙂👍
it does look like an excellent car to drink in I agree
The French actually have this concept - the voiture sans permis. They are intended for teenagers and the elderly, and folk in rural areas, and you don't require a licence to drive one. The cars are limited in speed (28mph). But of course they were incredibly popular with anyone who had been banned for drink driving.

-no speeding tickets
-charge this thing with a hand crank
They also give tickets to slow drivers

My grocery store is 3/4 of a mile from home, and that looks like a "grocery getter" to me...
and you only need to refill 5 new batteries every 6 months :)
We use a golf cart to make grocery store runs in our town (small town midwest), and this thing is still cheaper than a new golf cart. We paid $3800 for our used cart that was 8 years old.
Dude you could do deliveries for your neighbours. Pay off the car in 12 months.

I think if you compare this to a golf kart, instead of a car, you realize how amazing the value is
You would die in this faster than you would an electric board in the US. I guess this is legal in China? This would be excellent in a gated community in Florida or make an excellent golf cart. I don't golf but I would love to have one. I would rather have a little 125cc Jeep cart. I seems like it would be safer and about 800 dollars cheaper. Plus you can go about 50 mph if need be.
@@RoySpray buy it without batteries and spend $300 extra on batteries over what the batteries cost and get double the range, double the power, and if you really want to, you could put a generator on the back

In this episode Jason shows off his new backup camera that came with a free car.
This type of “car” was originally designed for people with disabilities or having difficulty moving around. It’s not classified as a motor vehicle so you don’t need a registration or license to drive it. Also for safety reasons some manufacturers would put a speed cap on the motors. Not sure Changli has it though. It’s basically a motorized scooter with roof.
I'd totally drive this time inside of a city that has wide enough roads to keep to the side and out of traffic. Would make a fun "grocery getter", until it gets too hot or too cold, which is like 75% of the year here.
It does come with a speed cap. My friend’s grandpa has one too😂
@@NotSoCrazyNinja he got the lowest cost version. That is the whole point. In reality, Changli makes fancier versions that also include air conditioning and GPS (remember: these are designed for seniors or those who have physical limitations)
I live in Indiana sometimes and they make you have insurance and a plate even on 50 cc scooters/ mopeds so I was wondering about this
Agree. Also designed for the old too

Watch James May’s segment on the original Fiat 500 on his show “Cars Of The People” with its eye-watering 13 hp motor and cloth roof to save money on metal; this is basically the same thing but electric, a car for families around the world who are making the equivalent of a couple thousands per year. This is a big upgrade for folks who otherwise would have to pile families and cargo on top of a bike or a 2-stroke scooter. For not much more $ their families can stay out of the weather and carry cargo inside. The slowness and enclosed cabin makes it a bit safer. This should be functionally compared to bicycles or scooters in the class of the old Honda Super Cubs. If this improves the lives of people in the third world, without a smog-spewing two-stroke motor, then big thumbs up.
true, but at the same time that's what the tata nano tried and failed because people would rather ride a moped than that awful thing
True, most middle class Indian families went for used cars instead, which I think was the smart move given that the Nano was essentially held together by superglue and hope.
the tata nano didn't reckon with indian fashion/class consciousness of people who could actually afford one, despite their poverty. imo it would have been better suited to a government program that handed them out to people truly on the bottom of the economic heap. and likewise, this car is *so* cheap, you could imagine western do-gooders handing them out to remote villages, instead of bibles or whatever it is they usually do. often they just turn up to perform labor, under the impression that poor people are too stupid to solve basic problems. the winning factor is that with a few solar panels, there is no requirement for infrastructure ... no gas stations, no power lines, nothing. there are lots of places on the planet with nearly zero infrastructure. at some point, basic stuff becomes cheap enough for developed countries to simply give it away
this is aimed at the idiots that think this "car"is impressive, if this impresses you then id hate to be your wife or husband as you are clearly a disappointment in every aspect ,i dunno what the debate is about, this "thing" is garbage total garbage, its so unbelievably pish it really is...more Chinese waste that lasts minutes and sold as saving the planet cos its electric, you want to save the planet stop buying e waste like this,or get a diesel golf or jump off a cliff....either way is good for humanity
Completely agree
These videos on this car are the most fun auto reviews I’ve ever seen! ;)))
When his Son flipped him the Bird I lost it😂
This "car" is for elderly people but banned in Chinese cities. You can only drive it in suburb or rural areas in China.
Odd as you’d think the city is the main place it would be useful.
Why is this car banned in Chinese cities?. I would have thought that this type of vehicle would be ideal to use on congested and polluted high population density urban areas.
@@barry-cq4xg probably safety regulation issues.
@@barry-cq4xg 'would be ideal to use on congested ' It would be from the standpoint of the person using that car, but the slow speed would create even more congestion and bottlenecks. I'm in an area where it's OK to use golf carts, and it is a good thing. But they're only allowed on cross and side streets here, they would impact the main roads far too much.

It comes with a speed cap (my friend’s grandpa has one), and you’ll know how fast it can actually go if u have the speed cap uninstalled by a mechanic😂
Wen Xinzhu How fast it goes?
I assume it is a power limit then rather than something that specifically stop acceleration beyond a certain point. If it only has 1.1 hp i don't see it going any faster than in the video with the shape of it. What does it get up to without the limit? 5 hp or something?
Elliott Savva hmmm, I’m not sure cuz my friend didn’t want his grandpa to go that fast lol but he told me the speed cap or the power limit can be uninstalled😳

I had a little Zap Xebra some years ago (bought new), and it was a lot of fun as a new car. However, before the first year was out, the batteries went from poor to awful, and I couldn't justify replacing them that often (both due to the expense and environmental impacts). I passed it off to someone else, and they replaced the batteries but also stopped using it. Then to a third person, and I didn't hear any rave reviews from them. In short, these cars are fun in the beginning and then become albatrosses around the neck, at least in my experience. As at least one other commenter said, yes, turn off anything else drawing from the batteries while you're driving. They're mostly bells and whistles anyway.

Yeah, the, uh, similarities are striking.
In China we call these kinds of cars "老头乐" which literally means “Old man happy” since most of the buyers are the old daddy who wants to experience the driving. About the speed, actually it is limited for safety, but they're always some cheating ways to "unlock" the limit. Take my electric scooter for example, pull the full brake of the right handle and maximum the accelerator when the power is on, you'll unlock the speed limit and it will speed up to about 50km/h which is too fast in the city. I believe the Changli got the same thing in it.

Hi, love from China, I’ve heard your complains regarding with the power and speed, and I have a tip for you: try to contact your retailer and ask for removing the speed limit. Cuz typically these vehicles are consider as illegal going on streets therefore their power has been reduced.

I'd absolutely love to take one of these and put a motorcycle engine in it and try to somehow get it road legal. Not even anything crazy like a hyabusa swap, just like a simple Honda 500-650ish twin. Maybe make it drive the front wheels with the rear still electric for some weirdo hybrid setup? Idk but the possibilities sound fun!
Anything over 20 and this thing'll flip when you steer in the slightest XD
Even a modern 125cc m/bike engine would improve acceleration/top speed enough to make it more usable on the road.... :-)
@@thedarkknight1971 That would be like the original, post WorldWar 2 "Kaijadosha" Japanese "light vehicles". Originally growing out of a motorbike and sidecar with a 125cc engine, modified to be usable as what amounts to a very light truck/delivery vehicle for around-town purposes. Over the years the allowable cc ratings increased to like 350cc, then 500, then 550 then 650cc then 1,000cc etc. Hence those small Japanese cars with small motors (the earliest ones being 2-stroke engines using a pre-mixed fuel/oil mixture).
