The Impressive Engineering Behind The Cheapest Electric Car In The World

- The cheapest new electric car in the world, the $1,200 Changli Nemeca from Chinese e-commerce website Alibaba, is a truly amazing machine. This became clear as soon as my coworker Jason Torchinsky unboxed the car and saw its unexpected features, and even more so when he drove it. But it wasn’t until he and I looked at the tech under the skin that we truly realized the Changli’s unbelievable value. Here’s a look at the engineering behind the incredible 1.1 horsepower Changli.
Jason had a vision last year: He was going to buy the cheapest electric car in the world from Alibaba, ship it across the ocean to the U.S., deal with all the customs paperwork, truck the car down to his place in North Carolina, and show the world what the wackiest form of EV ownership looks like. Amazingly, despite uncertainty within our company, and despite the coronavirus and related economic turmoil, he pulled it off. The car that began life in Jiangsu, China now sits in Jason’s backyard in Chapel Hill, where the machine immediately blew us away with its impressive features.

This kind car called 老头乐 in Chinese which means for Grandma or Grandpa. This kind cars are for them move in short distances, such as buy grocery , pick up their grandkids in blocks. The whole concept of this car is for old people move in short distance under a roof with safe speed. This type cars are more likely used at rural areas or old community with really narrow streets. Really love your videos of this car. Enjoy your ride 😀😀😀
I've seen people in USA retirement communities drive around in golf carts. I don't know their top speed but it's a similar experience - but no closed cabin.
Thank you so much for explaining this as I have been trying to suggest these vehicles and similiar for my family's grandpa whom is getting difficulty with speed and finances for new cars and fixes. A machine like this could assure safety reliability and affordability.

I would definitely go lithium-ion and maybe swap out the roof rack for a solar charging type system. We as consumers should demand this be here. The price is right and the mod ideas are plentiful!!
Yea, like a wheelie bar
You greatly over estimate solar charging. I've ran the numbers and if I covered the roof, hood, and back glass of my Chevy Volt with panels, it would take 25 days to fully charge it, assuming no cloudy days and 100% charging efficiency.

Wendy Frederick it would depend on the State regulations ....
This type of car is usually made for old people to get around. But since we Chinese does not like no wheel chair (because that is for weak old people, and No weather protection) this type of electric car was developed. Weather protected, can carry grocery and grandchild to and back from school, can haul decent amount of material. The rear view cam is standard as far as i know, because we Chinese care more about the feeling of sitting in a car instead of the power numbers, so you can see even basic model cars in China has Rear view camera, heated seats, air-con, HUD, all that bells and whistles in a 90hp compact car. Also the screen doubles as a entertainment system, you plug a USB stick in there and it can play the video file in the usb. Very cool in its own way definitely.

Ooh, yeah, imagine if you could buy this as a kit instead of pre-assembled.
Pocket Fluff Productions then it will be even cheaper also cheaper transport fee
@Pocket Fluff Productions having some previous experience with Alibaba, I’d say there’s about a 99% chance you could buy one, or a few of them, unassembled.
Alibaba’s purpose is basically just to connect you directly to factories in China where you then negotiate price and whatnot, so you could probably just ask and they would ship you the parts instead of a whole car no problem.
Alibaba is usually for buying parts in bulk directly from factories whereas AliExpress is for buying single items or smaller batches usually from resellers (basically Amazon but for Chinese made items...so basically still just Amazon I guess haha), but I guess since the car is a high price item-compared to say a microchip-they were also doing single sales.
China’s manufacturing is a bit unique compared to western countries in that there are lots of small factories that build the same product (or slight variations on the same product). I’m sure some smaller factory making these types of vehicles would be more than happy to sell a few without having to put them together. Hell even a bigger one would probably do it. A sale is a sale.
It is impressive! I have really enjoyed your series here.

SteveVi0lence you
In Pakistan rickshaws are everywhere and fully loaded with 6 or 7 people plus the weight of a frame, they often use small 100 cc 125 cc motorcycle engines and easily go 60-80 kmh with room for more. In this small lightweight frame car it would be a lot of fun and practical to have a small moto engine on it
What an awesome review - I haven't the slightest interest in owning the car but I watched both videos in full just because you did such a great job of reviewing it. You are the best auto reviewers I could ever have found! Actually, thanks to you, I also am really impressed by the car too and I hope this means millions of these will be sold to the people who really need cheap transportation and that this will help move the electric vehicle revolution fast forward. Thanks very much!!!
It would be sweet if you guys manage to swap out the electric motor for a more powerful one as well as finding some lithium cells for the batteries.
Make it a wheelie machine.
7:12 those are sealed lead acid batteries of the type commonly used for UPSs.
Brian Leeper thanks, “lead acid car battery” (doesn’t equal) deep cycle UPS battery, and as for the car? Yes I want
I don't know why this was recommended to me, I don't know anything about cars but I absolutely love how enthusiastic they are about it I could listen to it all day hahaha
Would love to see the motor upgraded in this and any additional mods.
would not do anything until this had front brakes. it is already a death trap as it is.
You got your money's worth...
Definitely
微博转发你的unboxing那段视频, 我从那里慕名而来。。没想到后续的还有不停的赞啊。。。这次常力可要火了。。哈哈哈
I'm 4' 11" I want one of these cars! Lol
I'm 4'10", we're both in the Under 5 Club! This looks like it would have very good visibility around the whole car. That is where I have the most problem with cars. I can reach all the pedals and all that, then I can't see anything out the windows except sky and maybe a telephone pole and a very tall giraffe.
I'm 6' 4" and I still kind of want one
Omg totally off topic but I'm 4'11" too and am wondering if you also have small feet. I wear a kids size 2 and have the worst time finding shoes, how about you?
I want to see more about it in the future 🤣
No joke.
I mean it 😳👍
" It's not that crappy". What a compliment.
The gearshift is the exact same one in my daughters power wheel 🤣
😂
I recognized that PW shifter too!
So this is the car the Book „unsafe at any speed“ was written about... a single brake system is my main concern. The rest looks not so bad...
Yes . rear brake only is recipe for disaster.
@@johannes914 This thing can't go over 35 and weighs next to n othing
Then retrofit a secondary brake system on it then, it couldn't be that hard to mod a set of motorcycle brake onto that tiny cart?
What would worry me about the brake is that the rod from the pedal appears to be held on with a single nut on the end of the bar, and doesn't appear to have a lock nut or any other reason it wouldn't just loosen and fall off.
I wonder if that's in addition to regen braking. From what I've read about electric motors, having regen braking is just a matter of connecting some wires differently, although in the simplest form, it kicks in when you let go of the pedal and whatever the actual brake pedal does is a separate operation.
My kid turns 16 this year, perfect L-plate car, I'm not even joking.
Will he get a matching dad and son L for his forehead ?
@@1STGeneral Your mom has my L plate
I don’t suppose you asked your sons opinion about this plan?
@Nilsfried That is a low speed car
you should do a road trip with that car!!! (on a dirt trail or some path) I would totally watch that!! and im sure many other people would too!!
video title: "going on a road trip (with/using) the cheapest car in the world!!"
This needs to be modded into a street legal car!
I thought the whole premise of the series is that it's already street legal (albeit a terrible piece of cheap, underperforming garbage).
@@willenestvedt1376 The only thing I can think of is it needs seatbelts to be (surface) street legal in any US state. I drive a smart car, which is pretty damn stable and safe. This I know is nowhere near that, but it could be fun to have as a car for my right-around-me trips. I work at a university only 2 miles away. I could use it for that commute for sure.
@@willenestvedt1376 ...oh, and I know they showed the horn, but they didn't sample it. It has to be audible at least 200 feet (67 yards) away. That's not a tall order, and I'm guessing the horn provided would meet that, but just a possible thought I had.
Amazing. Kindly have a review on it after 6months of use.😀
Audi would have charged you for the footprint, lol.
That footprint is ORIGINAL.
Ohhhhhh lol
has its own part number
Jason, you really need to start a Changle racing class. Weld the diff and add four battery packs, and invite well know race drivers to see the ultimate auto race...
[ of course, we'll watch it with the video speed at 500% so we don't fall asleep...]
Just make it a small road course and stick 20 of them in the race. Even slow cars are fun to watch when it's that much chaos.
Uh, you would only weld the diff for drag racing, for autocross that would be a very very bad idea
How far can you drive when it's fully charged.
I would love to see this thing hacked up :D
Changing the battery and then changing the motor.
Front brakes might be inorder as well 😄
LOL. like speed hack?
@@janjoy0529 hehehe, exactly that :D
now you realize just how overpriced Brand Cars are
Protip: it's the same with everything else including Houses
Not really, brand cars gets a lot more like confort, infotainement, aircon, but the most important is the reliability and the security, I don't want to end up in a crash in this car. And it cost a lot to make a safe car.
@@aymericsauzet5077 Right but if everybody would use such tiny cars there wouldn't be any "security issues" anymore... The use of developping security is because we have to drive amongst all kind of different types of vehicles.
You can build a house for $10,000 or $100,000. Which one is gonna be comfortable and still standing in 20 years? Just as good never is.
Are you crazy....a lot of technology and research goes into making cars. There is also considerable investment in safety systems, these things cost a lot of money.
This has probably been mentioned, but your pin that keeps the stearing U-joint attached to the rack is almost out. see 2:01 on the video.
We need to make sure Tesla sees this video and rebadges the car for America!
This is what make the old cars be successful in the olden days.
It might fail every crash tests.
@@hongyangjiang4976 That's why you drive it on the sidewalk
@@hongyangjiang4976 At 20 mph is fine
I am so shocked to have watched the first review of an EV since 2008 not to mention how it compared to a Tesla. The Apocalypse is nigh!
For the price, I can see that for a kid in a small town college just to get around for 4 years, and then give it to somebody else.
in China we call these cars "joy of grandpa", and already forbidden in city
When you think about it $1200 isn't a lot more than the $700 it cost for Peg Perego Gaucho.
(To be fair, with the Gaucho when you open the hood you get a pretend engine to look at so extra value).
Note: No review of safety, speed, access to parts, etc. How about repairing a flat tire?
If it was a tech school it would probably be busa or ls swapped.
After two whole videos, why wouldn’t you post one of you guys actually driving it?
This is the third video🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
That was so funny when he spat his drink out.
