That looks awesome Doug. I have fallen in love with Norway recently - an amazing place. My kids are always teasing me when I catch a fish, they say, "I bet it's not as big as Doug Ks". You have now officially ruined me with that massive cod!!!!! How am I going to beat that 🎣🎣🎣😅🤣
Hi David - just tell them that I'm fibbing and holding the cod right out towards the camera... half the time it's probably true! Or you could try for the proper skrei cod in March/April🙂 - I'm definitely not going to be in Soroya at that time of year! The scenery is amazing and dramatic for a reason and you have to be pretty tough to survive the winter up there. We stayed at Breivik, winter population = 5. Cheers, Doug
Well Doug, your account of the Soroya trip is a sight for sore eyes.... The variety and size of the species, the boat, the scenery - including the puffin-headed lure 🤔- all contributed to make this one of your best ever videos. Many thanks for dedicating so much time capturing so many highlights of the trip and introducing us to such a wonderful fishing destination. Oh, that boat.......
Hi Charlie - my daughter was horrified when I told her that we were using puffins as bait, so I had to show her proof🤣🤣 As far as I can tell the boat is ballpark £100k so they're definitely not cheaping out (thankfully, given where we were). However, I don't think I could ever get used to the Scandi style of having the cuddy towards the stern rather than the bow - I guess it's because they don't anchor much so there's no benefit in having a nice cabin up front that you can hide behind! Our boat didn't even have an anchor, which prompted some debate amongst the crew, as it's definitely not the sort of place you want to drift ashore! Cheers, Doug
Thanks 👍 It's only fair to emphasise that these were the highlights of our trip. Overall the fishing was quite slow and not what we'd really hoped for, although I really enjoyed just being that far north and the scenery that went with it. Still, short of spending a few weeks shivering in Shetland, I can't see me catching cod like that in the UK! Cheers, Doug
Glad you enjoyed it - although I wouldn't want to give the impression that fish were just lining up to be caught! We had some quite slow spells and had to work fairly hard to get fish at times. Cheers, Doug
Glad you liked it! It was a bit of a change for me, and my first ever visit to Scandinavia. I'll definitely be back at some point, although maybe on some sort of humungous car camp🙂
Thanks for taking the cameras Doug, a spectacular insight into how the other half live & I hope you all get to return some day. I think Trevor was re-living his EFAD days though.
Hi Ash - it was a beautiful place, in a very rugged sense. I'd like to visit again but perhaps as a longer expedition with car and sib or kayak. Soroya looks great for hiking, camping and trouting too🙂 Cheers, Doug
Well Tony tested out the Angler's teeth and can confirm they are sharp🤣🤣 Strangely enough, I have only ever seen 2 angler fish before and I literally picked them up (alive) from pools in the Ythan estuary one day in winter. Both small, 10-12" long. Over 40 years ago - I took one home in a bucket to show my parents before releasing it again. The Norwegian specimens were altogether more impressive specimens in the mid-20lb range! Cheers, Doug
@@Corkwing-DougK I'll take a look at the Ythan. Last time I was there the Sea Troot were looping as they say. In my younger days I used to scuba dive out of Plymouth. There were some large Angler fish outside the Sound. Once saw a Sun fish from underwater which was quite something.
The Ythan fish were a one-off, probably getting disorientated in cold water and swimming the wrong direction. I used to dig bait at the Ythan regularly and this was the only time I ever saw them, dead or alive. Mind you, there's more species in that area than you might think, especially up towards Rockend and Hackley Bay - I've seen dead conger and lumpsuckers washed up, plus decent bass in the salmon nets (this was back in the 80s), and caught gurnard in Hackley Bay itself. Nets used to catch small turbot too.
That's actually my first serious angling trip abroad, unless you count a couple of trips to Ireland many years ago! The weather was generally excellent and better than the video suggests - and definitely better than the same week back home🙂 Now to plan the next expedition...
🙂 We had this debate with the guides in Norway... Very confusingly for the rest of the world, in Scotland the brosme is called a torsk, whilst your torsk is our cod - uk-fish.info/pages/torsk.html Either way, I was happy to catch a new species! Cheers, Doug
Great video again Doug still some memorable fish landed and cracking weather considering what we have been getting fish locker channel recently posted a Norway trip he got some huge fish aswell
Thanks John. Fishlocker was only a few miles south of us and in the same location we fished on our last day. I think he had a similar experience to us, with some very nice individual fish but pretty few and far between. We definitely seemed to get better weather tho - no need for thermals😀😀 Cheers, Doug
Fantastic video as usual. Will a 2lb Pollock in Loch Sunart ever be the same again! We spent 4 days fishing just south of there in June and had some amazing fish. However this was the first year in 15 that we noticed a real drop in the number of fish. Hopefully it’s not a sign of things to come.
Thanks Peter - I'll no doubt adapt to UK averages quickly enough☹ Just hold the fish closer to the camera 😀 Tony had been to Norway before and he noticed the drop in numbers quite clearly. The guides were open enough about fishing being poor in recent weeks, especially for halibut. With luck it's just a blip! Cheers, Doug
Brilliant video . Fishbjust lit of this world . I’m Not the greatest on boats even in good conditions like them . Wondering if Norway fishing is good from shore . Compared to scotlands east coast which I fish endlessly
I've never fished Norway from the shore but if you search YT for Billyfishing you'll find a load of Norway shore fishing videos and advice on gear, tactics, etc. He catches some very nice fish from the shore - far better than you'll see from the east coast of Scotland these days. Cheers, Doug
Hi, we were there in the first half of August - way too hot for floatation suits most days, and definitely better weather than we're used to in Scotland 🙂. This video was just a simple view into our experience of fishing in Norway rather than trying to advise people on what to do, or not do. I'm happy to answer any questions people have but this was my first trip to Norway so I can't claim any expertise about the fishing (although between the 4 of us, we have about 150 years of boating experience in Scotland🙂) Cheers, Doug
@@Corkwing-DougKThanks for creating and sharing the film. I think fishing was quiet good. Angler fish, big cods, some halibuts... Nice weather and calm sea. I agree that scenery reminds Scotland :) But are there same fishing camps in Scotland?

That looked like a great trip, well done on that Cod and the Angler fish looked fearsome.

@@Corkwing-DougK Thanks for the information. I had some more Haddock today while out on the boat, All very pale coloured fish.
Great wee trip abroad, and very lucky weatherwise.

1:57, it's not a Torsk (Cod) but Brosme (Cusk), but it is a cod-like fish.

Hey, what about safety tips in the boat :) Floatation suits? :) Was this trip in end of August?
