      Thanks, although I doubt anyone learns much fishing technique from me! 👍 Just back from a little kayaking and camping in sunshine somewhere in the back of beyond🙂 Fabulous place, but I didn't do much fishing beyond the essential mackerel for dinner bit! Quite happy to just lap up the scenery and a coffee or two 🙂

    What a great weekend, well done ! Some impressive runs from those big fish too, my 12lb rod would struggle there wll right. NE coast is modest by comparison just now. Thanks for posting.

      Hi Ash, I think Ian was playing his fish on a relatively light drag so they were certainly looking (and sounding) good for the camera. It has the advantage of tiring the fish more, so they're easier to handle on the boat, but they can end up a long way down tide. A 12lb rod would probably cope for most fish in Luce Bay, but not when you hit deeper water and stronger tides out past the Scares. I'm hearing rather mixed reports for the east coast around here, but I've not been out of Dunbar for a few weeks now. School holidays up here, so the weather's gone to pot!😕

      Glad you enjoyed it - pulling the shots together took a lot longer than I expected. More than one camera, with different time settings, made it difficult to be sure I actually had the same fish shown in each sequence🤨 Lesson learnt (again!)

    Good video again, not long back from a holiday down there(ardwell) no fishing though, back down with boat in a couple of weeks if winds drop, a lot of stuff to take just for a few days fishing, I use my car to sleep in but that only takes the tent out of all the gear needed 😊

      A few days in Galloway tends to bring out the glamper in me😁😁 It's about the only place where my carp beds actually get taken on a fishing trip - heavy, bulky things but superbly comfortable compared to the usual alternatives. Good luck with the weather and the fishing - I'm also hoping for another shot if I can line up the time off with calm conditions.

      Can I ask some questions about your car?what year,how many miles,what model,any problems with it?thinking of getting one 4x4 diesel

    • @Corkwing-DougK
      @Corkwing-DougK  Рік тому

      Sure - it's a 2014 Yeti Outdoor SE TDi CR 4x4 with a 2l diesel (just base engine, something like 105hp). 127k miles. The only significant problem I've had with it so far is a broken clock spring, which screws up the controls mounted on the steering wheel - about £550 to fix. Also had rear brake discs renewed a couple of times and a new battery. Bottom of the doors is showing signs of rust (I think this is a common problem with Yetis). Bear in mind my interest in cars is near zero - it's maintained, and not hammered, but has no loving care and attention! I'll probably hang on to it for a couple more years, or until it starts to seriously misbehave. Passenger comfort is fine in the front but a little tight in the back - you could run 5 people for short distances but only 4 in comfort for a longer run. The seats lift out altogether which is really useful at times. If you're towing then its absolutely fine with my Longliner and was OK with my old Warrior (1100-1200kg total), although you did know you had a lump on the back. If they still made it, it would certainly be high up my list for a replacement car, as a flexible car with 4x4 "light" capabilities is what I need just now.

    Plenty of decent fish landed Doug i take the sib down the mull usually the bays east and west of ardwell marine but can be a slog if tides out when time for home port William looks a bit easier in your video might try there is the campsite far from slipway

      @Corkwing-DougK  Рік тому +1

      Hi John, I'd say Port William is usable HW +/- 3 hours, maybe a bit more for a sib. It does dry at LW. We use the Port William/Kings Green Community Campsite which is about half a mile away - perfectly OK for us and nice and quiet. £16 a night for a pitch, including 2 adults and the boat. You'd definitely need to book in advance at this time of year though.

    Another excellent video Doug. I have been struggling with car issues so I couldn't get down during the great weather that you highlighted so well. I was hoping to join you off Port William again this year, but still plan to get down. In the meantime, thanks for reminding me what I'm missing 😔.

      Thanks Charlie, and shame about the car - I was half-expecting to bump into you at Port William. The fishing was definitely a little hit or miss, with most of the tope concentrated in one afternoon/evening session. Better than average size, however. With a little luck there should still be some left for you😁😁

    Brilliant fishing again Doug! Some cracking fish landed. Hows Port William for launching and retrieving the boat? I’ve yet to venture down luce bay, i’m always sceptical as to where to luanch from down there.

      Thanks - I do like fishing Galloway, even though I don't often manage to pull a video together! Port William is usable HW+/- 3 hours, although I'd say 2 hours before or after HW is the sweet spot. With my "soft" 4x4 in the Yeti and a light boat I've not had a problem, but a 2WD might struggle with soft sand near the slipway. With 2WD your options are limited and Isle of Whithorn is probably your best bet (but watch out if the slipway has weed growth - then it gets very slippy). Garlieston, into Wigtown Bay, is also manageable with 2WD but dries at half tide. It's a few years since I tried at Port Logan but it was also OK with care (use boards under the trailer wheels). I think both Drummore and Port Logan also offer tractor launches, but I don't know any details.

      @@Corkwing-DougK Yeah i would be ok as well, i’ve a 4x4 and a Arran 16 so thats also pretty light. Might try and get down at some point over the summer. Thanks for the info its much appreciated Doug 😀

      OK - If you've a roller coaster style trailer then you're fine. If not, then I'd suggest trying +/- 1 1/2 to 2 hours at Port William. Isle of Whithorn is OK for at least 4 hours +/- HW (using the slip beyond the main harbour - drive past the Steam Packet Inn to the end of the road) Strong tide run when you leave the Isle though. Garlieston HW +/- 3 hours max, and stick very close to the harbour wall and other boats or you'll hit a mud bank. We use this area because we can choose to launch Wigtown Bay, Luce Bay or into the more exposed bits of the Solway. And there's fish to catch😁

    Great watch and some great fish how long do the tope stay around long

    • @Corkwing-DougK
      @Corkwing-DougK  Рік тому +1

      Hi Alan, we were fishing relatively shallow water just off Port William and I associate this with large packs of male tope, generally in the 15-25lb range, and basically the month of June. Chuck in huss, rays, smoothhound and the chance of decent bass and you can see why I regard it as an antidote to east coast cod and pollack, and the west coast diet of spurs and skate!
      There are plenty of tope a little further offshore over the summer, and they seem to get bigger towards the autumn months, but you're talking about more exposed, deeper and more tidal water. Next bay along, Wigtown Bay, can be plagued by baby tope

    • @Corkwing-DougK
      @Corkwing-DougK  Рік тому +1

      The harbour dries out towards LW and I can launch HW +/- 3 hours. I think the easiest time is probably around 2 hours before or after HW when the sand is firm and there's a decent gradient.

      I've not had any problems with mine, but it's a bit of a lottery these days. A friend with the VW equivalent has had turbo problems and he's on similar mileage.

    What sort of speed are you getting fully loaded also what pitch prop are you using?

    • @Corkwing-DougK
      @Corkwing-DougK  Рік тому

      So the prop is 9 7/8″ x 10″ which was fitted by the dealer on the basis of 2 people aboard the boat, and I think it does a decent job, allowing me to hit max revs solo and a little under that with 2 aboard. With just myself and gear for the day, and in calm conditions, I'll get 19-20 knots. That drops to 13-14 knots with 2 (fairly chunky) anglers + gear and to 9-10 knots with 3 aboard. The Longliner 2 is fairly small and light so it is sensitive to weight distribution and getting the balance right makes quite a difference to speed.
