"Hey everyone! A correction needs to be made on what the JHS Overdrive Preamp has replicated. JHS' Overdrive Preamp is actually a faithful replication of the original big box DOD Overdrive Preamp. The slider lets you choose between two variations of the first version's clipping arrangement. In the down position, which is the more distorted and saturated of the two, is the earliest version ever found ("#75"), and the up position uses a clipping arrangement found in later serial numbers (still v1 though)."
Man, this thing just flat out works for that glorious blooming melodic lead sound. The tone here really reminds me of some of Neal Schon’s insanely badass tones on Departure.
Another great video by one and only Shawn Tubbs, amidst all this craziness going on in eastern Europe. Keep rocking and spread love, let love unite the world.
I bought the latest version of the D0D for under 50 bucks. It’s not bad. It’s also not great. Had an original yellow (2nd version?) back in olden times and loved it and lost it. Been waiting for a reasonably priced clone and you can’t go wrong with JHS. Stoked. Great playing and tones, Mr. Tubbs.
If you didn't dig the gold update you won't dig this one either. The gold update was based on the original gray LM741 OPA version. The later older yellow version you had was likely a different OPA (LF351/TL0xx).
Hi Shawn. Great sounding pedal, especially through the Suhr Bella amp while using the pedal with the switch in the up position. Also, killer sounding track at the beginning of the video. Thank you Shawn.
Cool pedal. With the clean amp with the power tubes pushed get that dixie dregs/Steve Morse vibe and the Yngwie Malmsteen using single coils when using the pedal as a boost.
Hey, Shawn, how are you doing? We’ve been seeing you less frequently, I hope all is good. It’s always a treat to see your demos. The tracks you come up with are often unusual and cool, but familiar enough to keep us grounded and hear the tones.
I totally love this pedal, the simplicity of it, the quality of the tone and the amount of drive which is just the right amount. I don't think I would need anymore drive than this.
PUT EVERYTHING ON TEN ON THE BRIGHT 1 HIGH INPUT OF A FULLY CRANKED 50W PLEXI WITH A BOSS NS-2 NOISE GATE IN BETWEEN AND SHRED! IT IS THE ONLY SOUND THAT IS UNIQUE TO THIS PEDAL. ON ALL OTHER SETTINGS MODERN PEDALS SURPASS IT QUITE EASILY! IT IS PERFECT FOR YJM TONE! THANKS
I liked it going into the Bella better. More bark and clarity, but still with plenty of drive on tap. I like the older fatter setting on the pedal too. Sounds like a big fat 70's amp driven thing, like Bad Company or something! lol
Wonderful opening track, chock full of ST licks to try to learn - got my homework cut out for me! I used to have one of the yellow DOD 250 pedals in the early 80s (the graphics had the mistake letter "O" in the 250, instead of the number "0"), used it for a rhythm crunch sound, but eventually sold it. This JHS version sounds great, nice to have both the grey and yellow options!
@@ShawnTubbs huh? I don’t mean your graphics, I mean the old vintage yellow ones were written “25O” instead of 250, that’s how you can tell them from the reissues!
I watch a lot of your videos, and to my ears, you almost get the same tone no matter what drive you are using. Especially when you play an A chord. It always has that same "wack wack" sound to it. Has to be in your hands. Always sounds like you no matter what you play. I love your playing though buddy. A real smoker.
The pedal and player sound fantastic! But I guess I'm never gonna understand the term 'overdrive!' I always think of it as a breakup, where you are still hearing your clean tone. But here, the guitarist has Gain knob cranked ( it sounds fantastic!), but he calls that 'overdrive,' but I think of that as Distortion!?
From JHS Website: We’ve also added a slider switch to this production version, which wasn’t included with the original DOD 250. While researching the #75 “Big Box” pedal, I acquired a second early big-box unit that used a completely different clipping arrangement. It only seemed fair to offer this switch so that you could explore these two variations for yourself.
Dear Shawn, you know I'm a big fan of yours and I've been following your video channel with great interest for a long time. But I have to admit that today, in view of the terrible pictures from the Ukraine and the knowledge that in the moment when we musicians are exchanging ideas about preamps, innocent people are dying there, it is not possible for me to be happy about your video, although I otherwise enjoy it so much. I know this is not a political You Tube channel, but this attack is also aimed at our musician friends in Ukraine. Shouldn't we musicians also show solidarity in some way? Let me know how you do with it. I am deeply affected and unable to go about my daily work as a musician and composer as usual.
I’ll disagree. In fact, I would take anybody else’s version over a similar type of pedal made by Earthquaker Devices. EQD pedals are junk. Bought three and two failed the moment I plugged into them. They have pretty graphic but that is it. They are built by people who have bad beards that play badly and made for people with bad beards who play badly.
No, actually they used 10 dollars in parts, this have surface mounted components, at least they could produce an electronic true bypass circuit, but still uses a 3PDT mechanical switch, at that price point, it reminds me to the VOX Sachturator a very simple pedal incredible overpriced "snake oil"

it all sounds great when you use it!!!!
Yes, I just watched Josh’s very entertaining video about that!

the yellow od250 was my first box. bought it in a pawn shop in fullerton in 84. liquid butter!

The JHS Overdrive Preamp is a recreation of the big box DOD Overdrive/Preamp that predated the DOD 250.

I like this cause you can crank it and doesn't have out of control volume or gain Seems fairly quiet as well
You sound great as always and it is enlightening to hear The Maestro’s tools used in such unorthodox fashion!
You're very kind. Thanks very much!

It's interesting. It seems the cliping is like 2x RED LED vs 2x 1n4148. If it has 2x 1N34a it will get a volume drop.

Is the switch for either silicon or germanium diodes?
