- In this video we test how well the 2018 Ford Expedition does towing. I upgraded to a 2018 from a 2017 Expedition. The 2018 is light years better then the 2017. So follow along as we test the new tow rig with my car trailer.

Just a word to note, you are exceeding your vehicles max tow rating. Without the max trailer tow package your vehicle is rated for 6000 pounds. Based on the Ford towing selector guide PDF. Simply adding the brake controller is not enough, package includes a list of things. 373 axle, larger radiator,,,, manual specifically states premium fuel required for towing also.
We just bought a 2020 max ourselves and had to search hard to find that 536 tow package option.
I have one with the to package and I pull a 6200
I thought its 6600lbs
We tow a 9k 30' travel trailer with our 17' EL...has max tow package. Mileage is 9 @ 65 // 8-1/2 @ 68 // and 7-1/2 @ 70. We typically cruise at 65-67 for best economy. Great mileage considering you can't get 7 people in a Prius and tow 6,000 pounds of gear, even if you made 3 three trips!
Insurance and DOT will chew this guy up when he has an accident overweight.
I have the 2015 EL with factory Tow package and 3.31. It’s rated for 9200.
How do you know if your expedition max has H D towing package, and also if it's 4x4. It has the knob below with only 2low 2high ,

Thanks for the post! Curious - do you know what your trans temp runs while towing?. For comparison, I have a 2016 Expedition V6 turbo w HD towing, 4x4, does not have the 3.75 gears but still rated around 9000lb. I tow a boat total 5000lb and get 20mpg (!) highway while towing at 60mph, drops to 14 at 75mph. Without boat add a good 5mpg to those numbers. Trans temp runs 198 degrees or so towing or not, will hit 201deg in stop-and-go. (Combined highway/ city non-towning 17 mpg). Thinking about a bigger boat pushing 7500lb towed weight. Of course, the frontal area of a car trailer is much more. Durability is a concern w/o HD package. Almost all the 2016-2017 have HD with factory brake controller... surprised that posts indicate it’s hard to find HD on the 2020.
John C most of the time while towing the trans temp is around 200. I plan on adding a large trans cooler in the spring.

Great video! I’m trying to figure out what would be better gas to fill my 2018 Expedition Max with towing a car on a U-HAUL Trailer. I’ll be traveling 800 miles i total. This will be my first and longest towing experience. There will be 7 of us in total along with a car on a flat bed open trailer. The owner manual suggests that for towing I use premium. I’m wondering if a U-Haul trailer can handle such a long tow. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you.
U-haul trailer should be fine. I’ve run both premium and regular and notice no difference. The expedition will tow it that load and carry you guys with ease.
Do you remember what gear ratio your 2017 had vs the one you currently have? That could make a difference too.
looking at his dash , 99.99% sure he has 3.31.or 3.15 his obviously over his tow weight
@@irodrod224The 3.31 was an option with the HD tow package with the 2015’s. The max capacity was still 9300#.

Good to know. I wonder why the non max tow is only rated at 6k? My v6 Grand Cherokee was rated higher than that. Might be so people will pay the upgrade to get the max total. Glad that you were seem to toe great without it.
Trey Salsbury not sure why. Might be softer springs or something. Also it didn’t come with the brake controller.
I just got a 2020 Expy Max, non- heavy duty tow. I had dealer install originally equips for brake controller. Plan to tow my Travel Trailer, 5700lbs, 3.31 rear gear. Glad to know my new Expedition max will be up to the task! Thanks for the video. How was your suspension?

HOWARD it’s the awd. I don’t have the HD towing package. I did add the ford brake controller
@@BringItMuscleCars I'm looking at buying one.. It doesn't have the HD towing .. I will be towing 2 sxs in the pa mountain. And maybe my tractor once awhile. Do you think the non HD towing would do it since weight would never be over what your towing.
Not sure about your math, but the lady sure is cute! I have a 2018 also and pull a 30’ travel trailer.

@@dlloyd6300 he said 7500 lbs with the car in it, which means he's got a car inside the trailer? or does he mean suv and trailer is 7500? i was a bit confused. but likely he means hes towing a trailer with a car inside totalling 7500 lbs
How were you able to access the reverse camera while driving forward? I did not know it could even do that. Thank you
It only does that while you are going slow. I think once you hit 5 mph it turns off.
@@BringItMuscleCars Is there a button somewhere that you push? I don't remember seeing a button on mine. Only engages when I put in reverse.
@@treysals no it just does it when you start in reverse. Or have it in reverse for a second

What mpg does it get on it's own without the trailer attached?
Numberiffic it normally averages 18 on my everyday driving.
What was the trailer weight?
I want to say around 3,000 lbs. might be a bit more.
What motor?
They only come with 3.5 twin turbo
