  • Do you have a family to haul and big toys to tug? Maybe you need something like the Ford Expedition. It gets F-150s aluminum skin and room for up to eight passengers. But maybe, just maybe, you don’t need all this capability. Tom Voelk checks out a mid-level Limited model.

    I just don’t get why 95% of automakers put Hard Scratchy plastic down on the doors and around the foot wells. To me makes it makes a car look cheap when it gets scuffed up and it’s inevitable. They used Carpet and Vinyl for Decades why the switch to hard plastic besides COST CUTTING. I think buyers would gladly pay an extra $100 to have carpet or some durable non scratch mateiral down low. That’s my Rant, and Thank you so much Tom for your usual Awesome Review.

      My guess as to why they did this - carmakers pinch pennies and that part of the door isn't a touchpoint like an armrest or a steering wheel. It's only after you live with it for a bit that you see they put cheap stuff down there.

    This thing is an excellent family hauler. We went New york for the Fourth of July (Which is about 3hrs away from Maryland) and rented one of these for the road. Compared to the Tahoe I can easily sit in the third row without a problem as long as it takes. We average about 17mpg which is what the Epa estimates it at so no false data on fuel economy from my experience. The only reason I'd consider the Tahoe over this is because it has a v8 but everything else the Expedition gets my vote.

    I think Ford made a mistake in not offering a V8 option. At least offer the 5.0 Coyote V8 and I'll bet it would be just as good on gas as the 3.5 EcoBoost V6 WITHOUT the headache of potential turbo lag or even turbocharger failure. Not to mention a bigger engine like a 5.0 or a 6.2 doesn't have to work as hard to generate power/torque.

    • @21divel
      @21divel Рік тому +1

      I've have a 2018 expedition with the 3.5tt. No issues in 100k miles, no turbo lag, and get 23mpg on the highway with 400hp/450tq. That's insane.Turbos were an issue perhaps on earlier models but not later engines. Cam phasers do get replaced under warranty but nothing to do with turbos. The only downside to v6's is the exhaust sound, but since it's a quiet family vehicle, not sure why anyone would want a loud exhaust.

    I'd love to see it be all original around 200k like my old 98 Eddie Bauer model with a 5.4 ...the v6 isn't going to hold up as long or well I don't think.. Ford really should offer a V8 since it runs on f150 platform

    I think we should all just get along as Ford owners but i don't think they like how short it is but can still haul just as much as they can.

      SS S fun fact...if you are even remotely comparing this to a damn tasteless minivan, you must be a minivan customer because no one else in their right mind would even think about a sienna compared to a FULL SIZE BOF SUV

    • @SSS-mp8th
      @SSS-mp8th 6 років тому

      dnice pimpin Fun fact a large portion of people who buy this behemoth would be better served with a mini-van. Unless you tow over 3,500lbs a BOF SUV isn't needed (most unibody CUV's can do 5,000lbs depending on model and spec). I have no problem with people buying these or anything else for whatever they want I just like to point out these massive vehicles are less practical if your intention is to move people and cargo.
      Some people haul trailers, boats and camp in the mountains and so forth. It's a good vehicle for that. The problem is most of these just schlep around suburbia going to soccer and baseball games.

      @sarahann530 6 років тому +4

      The gear ratio from the starter-drive pinion to the flywheel ring gear is optimized to make the starter's motor turn more slowly. This can be done without materially changing the design of the transmission or flywheel at all on existing designs.
      Crucially, this reduces starter-motor speed (in RPM), since 90 percent of starter-motor brush wear occurs not during cranking, but during the coast-down after the start has finished. If a higher-torque motor can spin more slowly, its coast-down time is shorter, increasing its longevity. The composition of the carbon and copper brushes on a start-stop motor differs from its traditional counterparts to increase longevity without accelerating the wear on the commutator. Rather than rely on oil-impregnated bushings for the rotating assemblies, start-stop starters mostly use needle bearings. The solenoid on start-stop starters decouples the mechanical action of engaging the drive pinion into the flywheel from the electrical action of stopping and starting the motor.
      This allows for a dedicated design to turn power on and off to the motor, optimizing contact design and wear, against contacts that have to be integrated as part of a spring-loaded plunger.
      This also reduces the electrical load requires to turn the engine, so that there is enough current available for accessories/lighting to operate during the start event.
      Finally, start-stop motors are integrated with other technologies that identify when each cylinder of the engine will reach top-dead center.
      That lets the fuel injectors pulse and fire during the middle of a complete rotation of the crank, against having to wait for a complete revolution that lets the first cylinder reach that position to start the fuel-spark timing sequence.

    • @baddriversofcolga
      @baddriversofcolga 6 років тому

      Great reply, John. It's well known that's Ford interior quality was quite bad in the era of the Excursion, and this comes from someone who owns a 2006 Explorer.

    • @johnunderwood7361
      @johnunderwood7361 6 років тому

      @@baddriversofcolga Wow....look, the Excursion is nothing like an Explorer. Lol. That's like comparing a Toyota Land Cruiser to a Toyota RAV4, totally different vehicles. I honestly thought you were joking. I just find it funny that my Excursion has real wood and a lot more leather than it does plastic, and to me the new Expeditions carpet also looks unbelievably cheap.
      In fact I was at a Ford dealership recently and when comparing the carpet that came in mine, versus the carpet that's in the new Ford Expedition, you can see the difference up close, they're using some sort of really cheap material, if you're at a Ford dealership try rubbing some of it with your hand, you will notice immediately what I'm talking about. I was honestly shocked with the poor quality, it starts to flake away, this is what happens when you use cheap Chinese knockoffs to cut corners for price controls...
      Yanno if you take care of the interior and exterior of your vehicle, it will look nice for a long time, just saying. Treat your vehicle right and it will treat you right.
      Also, I have Monster torque with the diesel engine, and their latest diesel engine feels a little rubbery to me(like a cvt) Also my Excursion is an inch longer than a Dodge Ram 3500 or a King Ranch Super Duty.
      Since I use it for work a lot, it's a great vehicle for hauling and towing stuff, and when is really bad weather, it goes through it with no problem, it has outstanding four-wheel drive. Whether you're in the mountains or at the coast, it drives like a champ.
      And you've got to love that hand of God torque that comes from the 6.0 liter diesel engine. Oh, by the way, thank you sincerely for pointing that out!! 😎 I've been saying it wrong this whole time, I popped the hood and looked under there and you're right, it's a 6.0, I work over a hundred hours a week so sometimes I make mistakes sir. The joys of being self-employed. I guess I'll sleep in the next life lol.
      Of course you can always upgrade the interior a bit with aftermarket stuff if you don't like the interior of your Explorer. There's a huge quantity of aftermarket material out there and a good bit of it is not very expensive, and then it will make your Explorer look a lot nicer. In the end sir, to each their own.
      So who knows maybe before I got my truck somebody spent a little time upgrading the interior, but it definitely has better quality when compared side-by-side with this Expedition, when I looked in that truck, I was surprised just how cheap the materials were. Anywho, Have a good day. 😎

    Cars this thirsty for personal transport is a perversion. We all know that the climate change is real and should do our best to limit our impact on climate - driving something like this is not doing that.

      Your point is well taken but your ire is more appropriately directed at cars like the Mustang GT than behemoths like this.

      I agree there are other cars where the same can be said, however mileage is just one factor it also matters how many miles a car is gonna be driven. Now I don't have data on this, but I would think that on average family cars drive many more miles on average than say muscle cars.
      I would really wish people prioritized a little different when buying cars and it can start with the small stuff. For example many cars are only really driven by the same person, so why do seat adjustments and steering wheel adjustments need to be electric - why not have a car with manual adjustment that is then a little lighter. It is a small thing, but everything adds up considering millions of cars are sold every year.

      I'll take that as a compliment.
      Does it mean you don't agree many cars these days and especially cars like this huge SUV aren't overweight and overpowered, which makes them using gas like there is no tomorrow?
      I'm not saying people should not buy cars, but merely that when doing so thinking about the environment should be a given. Doing so will not only mean fewer visits to the pump it will also mean impacting a little less on our climate.

      troy smith I like it! I think it modern looking compare to the Tahoe, Escalade, Yukon, Range Rover, which is real dated!

      troy smith yeah. I like the Suburban, Escalade, and Yukon XL interiors better. If you ask me I’d rather buy a GM SUV than the Expedition tbh. Ford just had a massive recall on the expedition.
