Thank you for helping me understand better of this condition. I do not have it, but I think my daughter is dating someone with this syndrome. I must say I love the guy and I am very happy for them.
The fact that you are trying to learn about this syndrome just cause of your daughter's date has it is just amazing and so heartful, I am sure you are an amazing parent and I encourage you to continue being like you are.

My kind of tic is like the ones that this man had and others, but the difference is that instead of physical pressure to repeat some movements or sounds over and over, I've got the mental pressure, which means I can control it, but there are times that my mind feels the "pressure" to repeat those things. Thanks to this man I learnt more about tic and I felt more comfortable, as now I know that there are lots of other people who suffer from it. I hope we all get over it eventually ❤️👍😁
I don't have torretts but I do have Tics. This describes me - don't distrupt my Every day life just embarrasing. And they come when I'm. stressed nervous/anxious or embarrased.
genuinely in tears right now never thought i would hear someone else with this form of tourettes
I was just diagnosed at 28 even though I've had these ticks since i was around 7 or 8. It's never really bothered me other than being annoying and sometimes i get weird looks when I tic in public. As of 6 months ago I've been getting headaches and hearing loss because of the consistency of movement that my tics cause. So I went to see a neurologist and finally got my diagnosis. It feels crazy to have had this my whole life and never know or even consider that this is what is it. Many people have tourettes way worse than me and kudos to them for fighting.
Thank you for getting me through tonite , having a rough time after 50 yrs of this tiresome b.s
Thank you thank you thank you for this video ! As someone with Tourette’s but no vocal tics I’ve never heard someone explain the “tic of the mind” that’s exactly what it is! I always called it ocd. But you are correct. Thank you.
I call them mental tics. I get tics that happen in my brain but they they don't happen physically
Btw.. the whole "tic of the mind"/mental tic thing is not a characteristic of tourettes. It is definitely something that can be experienced by someone with tourettes but, it is in no way part of the diagnosis. Tourettes is simply:
-At least 1 vocal tic
-At least 2 motor tics
-Tics occurring persistantly for at least one year
-Symptoms appearing before age 18
Nowhere in this criteria are there "mental tics" because these are NOT a tourettes thing.. just an fyi.
superbly done jack.
Very well-spoken!
Very informative ! I’ve had ticks but never knew about this condition
i love TEDx so much...
When I was in 7th grade there was always that one kid that would have tics, And at the time I thought he was doing them on purpose. But now I am well informed that he had Tourette Syndrome. I really feel bad for the way some kids treated him but I was not the kid to step in or put my self in a position I would regret. Thank you for teaching others about this, now when I notice some on is having a tic I would recognize it.
Thanks brother.
Great information, well done 👍, yes you right, you are a normal person,
God bless you 🤗😘🙏
Good talk, as someone with the whole shebang at nearly 40 im still learning.... often wondering if I too have some of the bolt ons associated with tourettes such as OCD you speak of.... sums me up pretty well.... exhausted doesn't cover it and that's just in an attempt to keep a lid on myself! Thank you 😊
i have tourettes and i came here to learn more about it since i’ve been recently diagnosed
coming from a 13 year old girl that has it. amazing!
Excellent! Great example to my son with Tourette!
Thanks!
My tics are so severe. If you know who thistrippyhippy is, then mine are the same as hers. But I have no diagnosis yet. Mine only came on 10 months ago
Damn that sucks. Have you gotten any help for that?
@@xandavidson1845 not yet, I've done kind of training them, so alot are easier to suppress in exams now but I have noticed they have calmed down a bit now. I can manage them it's just annoying
I'm 29 and I was just diagnosed with Tourette
i also get mental tics, which are invisible
why not talk about dental GELB help its amazing
Good talk, but I recommend other TED Talks on Tourette's Syndrome because this hardly does justice for those of us in the minority who have very severe forms of TS. This doesn't capture the truth of the condition's struggles enough coming from someone who has a very mild form that has subsided.
Which ones do you recommend? I have a nephew that's struggling with it in high school and i'd love to direct him towards some good ones.
Exactly. This talk or representation seems Disney(ed). I hope he is soon replaced.
M N
As far as I've seen, there are far more Ted talks about extreme/severe tourette syndrome than the more mild form. I have the mild form, and this is far more relatable for me than any other video about tourette syndrome. I'm really sorry if you have more extreme TS, but I'm just saying that I can relate better with this talk, so it isn't as useless or unhelpful for people with TS as it might seem.
I found this good personally because I've seen alot of videos about severe ones and did not think there was minor ones out there.
So applying Nivea Blue Cream on your under chin, perhaps?Above neck.
Is there such thing of tourettes but
Through thought because I have absolutely uncontrollable awful thoughts I just come out of nowhere I tried to control them but it just never works
that sounds like intrusive thoughts, they can be caused by OCD but not always, i have them without OCD.
TS and its associative conditions are not “diseases”.
But I got an abrupt onset at 18 but have had both vocal and motor and have had for 3 months now, so if it’s not Tourette’s, then...what is it?
there are many other tic disorders or conditions that can seem like Tourette's I suggest you see a neurologist
So if i understand he had tourette as a kid but grown out of it like many people do!
wait do you need to have a motor and verbal tic to be diagnosed, or could you just have either or
Danielle PANDA I heard that to be diagnosed with it, you must have 3 or more tics of any kind
+Brianna Soto oh okay thank you

yeah you need to have more then one kind of tic for at least a full year. It is usually 2 or 3 types of tics.
neurologists internationally agree that in order to diagnose tics you must have at least 1 vocal tic and 1 motor tic for at least one year, with no lengthy break in symptoms.
:(
My neck hurts so sometimes i strech it, these ✌️symptomes✌️ only happens 1 month (not straight) in a year. Does this mean i have toerette
Toxic Odding no way near
Um no. Not at all.
No...tics are repetitive...not your neck hurting...
Sorry. I don't think someone who doesn't have ANY of the known/common symptoms of tourettes should represent us. You don't live it as we do. Your experience of tourettes is nothing compared to ours. I doubt you even have tourettes...of the mind. You didn't explain it as if you lived it. And blinds arrange themselves in an equidistant and symmetric manner with their levers and gravity. You can't modify that. All you are is a good speaker at most. It's not easy to laugh at experiences which have hurt you, as you did in this talk. Thank you but you should NOT be an AMBASSADOR, you OBVIOUSLY do not know what it's like to have tourettes.
Gilbert Cardenas
You're right, we don't know what it's like to have it more extreme, but in more mild cases, like mine, I actually can relate to this video, and I know what it's like having mental tics, and they are real.
Gilbert Cardenas
But I do agree with the thing you said about representing the people with TS.
Interesting.... But he doesn't seem like someone who's gone through hardships of tourettes. What makes your mental tics different from OCD??
Gilbert Cardenas
Again, I can't relate with OCD either. Although I used to feel like I had to feel like touching things with the other hand, and other symmetry things with any part of my body. But somehow, I mostly don't feel that way anymore. And I don't know if that was even OCD. Maybe the guy who spoke also had OCD, like with the curtains and all. Maybe he didn't. I don't know.
The mental tics usually happen when I'm more stressed, like he said. I use it as a way to suppress vocal tics. To me, it's shouting vocal tics in my head.
I'm able to suppress my vocal tics most of the time, and have suttle motor tics that are a bit harder to control.
And you are right. He hasn't gone through the hardships of having tourettes. Neither have I. We probably never will.
But, there are so many people without ts. Compared to them, it's still hard for me.
But I can only imagine what it's like for you. I am truly sorry. Please forgive me for writing this long comment, and I'm sorry if I offended you.
@@goatshenanigans6090No offence taken at all. We are merely sharing experiences. I just associate physical repetitive activity to OCD(as having to do certain things and certain ways in order to continue), and repetitive physical jerks (and vocal) to TS. What he explained and you having to touch things with your body sound like OCD. The fact that you can tic mentally in order to suppress visible tics is amazing. Kudos, glad it's helping!
