Car has now been fixed with a DME (digital motor electronics) software update.
There is a BMW/Mini bulletin titled: B36, B38M, B38U - Rattling noise with light load and coasting overrun mode (62130796).
Same issue appears on the bmw models with that engine. I had the same problem after the Engine update it is fixed and did not appear again. Definitely a software failure / bug.

I think it’s crazy that a mechanical rattle can be fixed with a software update. Happy to hear that yours was also fixed 👍🏻

I've seen other similar videos where people say it may be the butterfly valve or a software update. Sounds like a timing chain problem for me. Anyone has any idea of what's going on?
My wife’s car has exactly the same noise. Did yours stop when hot before going to bmw for the update? Did they charge for the update?
No noise when the car was hot. It was out of warranty so put it to an independent BMW/Mini garage. The update was on the invoice as part of a major service, so unsure how much it cost. £70-80 maybe.
@@epson9946 sounds exactly the same problem as mine then. I’ll check with my local bmw specialist to see if they can do the update as they should be cheaper than at a dealer. Thanks for your help.
Just quote the bulletin number to your independent. Hope it fixes the issue 👍🏻
