Old R5X's use to do this or something very similar. Typically it was the timing chain tensioner getting worn out. Also, a ton of people don't understand how much the MINI's valve train will thank you with very regular oil changes.
Factory 15,000km/12 months is fine for people who lease the car. When you purchase the car 7-8000 km on good oil ( liqui moly) is strongly recommend.... that's what the guy at my mini service department told me

So I have had our mini cooper convertible in this week for exactly the same noise. They said that it's the VANOS valve that controlls the variable valve timing. So we have only had this car for about 3 weeks, I bought it for my Wife and Daughters as a bit of a fun summer car. The issue is this, BMW say that the noise is within the set parameters for noise something of which I disagree with. This was a so called aproved used Mini with 28000 miles on it. They also told me that they tried another 2016 model they had in and that made the same noise. I told them that just because the other one does it doesn't make it right. I have got it in writing that the nose is normal and that it will not effect the cars future running......... Bollocks! So, I have been a Mechanical engineers for the last 27years, 6 years in the motor trade and 21 years I the RAF fixing fast jet A/C. Let me tell you what my experience has taught me. If something Mechanical is making an un natural noise then it's not right! I genuinely believe this to be oil pressure/ viscosity related but BMW do not. What do you all think? I told BMW that I believe that BMW are trying to pull the wool over customers eyes where this is concerned. BMW told me that they have carried out a software upgrade and for all it will not stop the noise, I should make it better. I will be interested to know if it will still do it when the weather warms and raises the ambient temperature. I'm sure this is worth a joint push to BMW.
@@Batinhas strange you say that...... the noise on our seems to be suppressed now just a little chatter from the turbo waste gate when cold. Normally only lasts about 2-3 minutes. They told me that the turbo chatter is due to the tolerance been less when cold and the tolerance becomes correct when warmed up........ I still think b@!!0£$ though! I'm sure, if enough of us press BMW they will have to do something about it. I have it in writing now to cover me in the future when the engine packs in.
Yes young auto mechanic myself and it’s definitely something to do with the Valvotronic system and low oil pressure. My Dad forgot to reset his oil level when I told him to after I serviced his 118i M Sport and changed the Oil filter housing 😅. Noticed the wastegate actuator arm was rattling, numerous gaskets weeping oil, Harmonic Balancer sounds suspicious, Auxiliary belt tensioner pulley is wobbling 😂, engine mounts are lacking from stock due to to trying to isolate the rattle of the 3 Cyl. They just wear quicker as they’re pretty floppy as is. I might replace them and add powerflex inserts. It’s all money racking up though on a 2018 model car it shouldn’t have a list so long.
So did you get a definitive answer or fix to this, only we have the same problem exact same sound coming from the gearbox end of the engine. Car has been back into mini but they have told us it's normal, I'm not convinced in the slightest. The sound only lasts a minute or two then goes. Getting pretty cheesed off with it now!
you should also notice the engine does not have a "fast idle" either.. they didn't program it for fast idle.. which would solve the low lubrication issue (which is what your hearing)... .. the quick fix is to hold the engine rpm to about 2000 for a short period on cold start up to allow proper lubrication..... By the way.. revving a cold motor is very very bad for it.. .. but don't take my word for it.. ask others..
I only made this video to show the problem to the dealer mechanics. I never ever rev a cold engine since I know how a engine works. I wait until the oil (and not the water) is at the nominal temperature.
@@schwinnminibike No harm in trying to help when the statements are correct, like what you said. Still many people dont know that a cold engine should not be pushed hard... Cheers!
I think it is solved. First the fuel pump was changed but it didn't solve the problem. Then they said they performed a software update that solved the problem. At least was what they said. Time will tell. At least I now have the new engine temperature and green mode graphics...
Typical chain rattle, the chain stretched and/or the tensioner doesn t do its job anymore. This was my nightmare on the previous Mini r56, the same problem. The engine must come out to replace the broken parts, as the chain is on the gearbox side. "Software upgrade" is pure BS in your face, sorry....
@@Batinhas just found out their is also a pcu recall for my engine (b38 may 2015) which was making the same sound as well... might wanna check.. not listed on line as far as i know.. I stumbled on the recall by calling the dealer.. cheers..
