  • Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. (April 2, 1939 -- April 1, 1984), better known by his stage name Marvin Gaye, was an American singer-songwriter and musician with a four-octave vocal range. Starting as a member of the doo-wop group The Moonglows in the late fifties, he ventured into a solo career after the group disbanded in 1960 signing with the Tamla Records subsidiary of Motown Records. After starting off as a session drummer, Gaye ranked as the label's top-selling solo artist during the sixties.
Because of solo hits such as "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Ain't That Peculiar", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and his duet singles with singers such as Mary Wells and Tammi Terrell, he was crowned "The Prince of Motown" and "The Prince of Soul".
His work in the early and mid-1970s, including the albums What's Going On, Let's Get It On, and I Want You, helped influence the quiet storm, urban adult contemporary, and slow jam genres. After a self-imposed European exile in the early eighties, Gaye returned on the 1982 Grammy-Award winning hit, "Sexual Healing" and the Midnight Love album before his death. Gaye was shot dead by his father on April 1, 1984. He was posthumously inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
In 2008, the American music magazine Rolling Stone ranked Gaye at number 6 on its list of The Greatest Singers of All Time, and ranked at number 18 on 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Marvin Gaye was a prophet whose words in the album "What's Going On" are still as relevant today as they were when I first heard the album in 1971 as a white woman of the South. He suffered all his life for the purity of his soul, the brilliance of his mind. the harsh call of the flesh and some who sucked money from him while pretending to care for him. The CD that's in my car to this day is "What's Going On". I actually want to play the album at my funeral because, there's really nothing else to say about this earthly life.

Karen A Medford Marvin sucked away most of his own money. A free spirited man who lived in excess suffering from tax, drugs and women issues. Record companies are record companies. They believe that it's their job to sign you, promote you when they hit big take most of the profits and later discard you like soiled cotton balls. Artists are a lot more business savvy these days. Marvin married into the record business. He knew the story. In one of his interviews Marvin admited that he was ever so greatful for what Motown did for his career...even those who worked behind the scenes to help make Motown as famous as it was and ended up less fortunate would still agree.

Marvin should have won at least 2 Grammy awards for What's Going On. He was snubbed in 1972, in my opinion. The album Let's Get It On should've garnered 2 Grammy's, I Want You 2, Got to Give it Up 1, even the 1968 single I Heard It Through The Grapevine, 1. That's a total of 8 Grammy snubs.

Why didn't he just tell his dad that he did not profit the whole world nor did he sell his soul! He wasn't king of any country! And even if he would have been he would have still gone the right way. Who was his dad to judge him. He who is without sin Let Him cast the first stone and his dad did way more than that when he killed him. He committed murder and that will gain him Hellfire according to the Bible. One of The Ten Commandments is, Thou shalt not kill! Marvin just didn't know how to react to his hateful dad.

Nice part 4. Seems like her age changed to 16 instead of what we've heard from other shows or interviews that said 17. Almost like those other interviews/shows were trying to soften her age by saying 17, to make people think it's okay cause she'd be "18" soon. I believe the show saying 16 because of it's serious production.

Marvin meets and later marries a 16 yr old and is still considered a genius and career not smeared or “muted” R Kelly meets 16 yr olds and even married one, now he has to be prosecuted. Both geniuses. Both battled demons. Amazing how we choose who to forgive and who we demoralize. After watching this as well as the surviving r Kelly, I find myself wishing that these so-called friends that were there, didn’t make sure to do whatever was needed to make sure they at least made mad effort to demand they get some help and face their demons with mad love to get them on the right path.

His father believed singing and playing sports was devil's work, and he participated in devil's when he killed his son. He shot him twice!
When you grow up under the kind of control his father used on his family under the name of the Pentecostal Church, you can only leave when you become an adult, and love the man from a distance. This is how you save yourself, however, some people can't do it.
