  • Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. (April 2, 1939 -- April 1, 1984), better known by his stage name Marvin Gaye, was an American singer-songwriter and musician with a four-octave vocal range. Starting as a member of the doo-wop group The Moonglows in the late fifties, he ventured into a solo career after the group disbanded in 1960 signing with the Tamla Records subsidiary of Motown Records. After starting off as a session drummer, Gaye ranked as the label's top-selling solo artist during the sixties.
    Because of solo hits such as "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Ain't That Peculiar", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and his duet singles with singers such as Mary Wells and Tammi Terrell, he was crowned "The Prince of Motown" and "The Prince of Soul".
    His work in the early and mid-1970s, including the albums What's Going On, Let's Get It On, and I Want You, helped influence the quiet storm, urban adult contemporary, and slow jam genres. After a self-imposed European exile in the early eighties, Gaye returned on the 1982 Grammy-Award winning hit, "Sexual Healing" and the Midnight Love album before his death. Gaye was shot dead by his father on April 1, 1984. He was posthumously inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
    In 2008, the American music magazine Rolling Stone ranked Gaye at number 6 on its list of The Greatest Singers of All Time, and ranked at number 18 on 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

    Even when the overlord himself (BERRY GORDY) controlled and just aproved music that would sell, MARVIN GAYE was a diamond in the rough. But when he and the biggest talent/genius ever (when it comes to music) STEVIE WONDER just said that they had enough of this POP and sellout kind off music that MOTOWN promoted up until then, things started to happen.
    This album What's going On, are in my eyes the absolute! when it comes to music, no one has or will ever come close to to what MARVIN did when he recorded this masterpiece.

      wow what a way to word it , Marvin tried to do that cornball Copa stuff that Sam Cooke mastered hell he even tried being crooner but unlike RCA , Motown saw Marvin ( the ultimate musical chameleon ) as an R&B act thus we got stuff like stubborn kinda , hitch hike but Marvin's depth in music & life which haven't been matched by any soul or R&B artist to date wouldn't allow his talent to be contained the man had a failed suicide attempt in 69 that plus the circumstances of his time , marriage failing , Tammi Terrell's passing , brother in Vietnam the man just snapped & pulled something within him and made musical ecstasy , 5 straight classics I just wonder what Marvin could of been without thar disgrace of a father he had or berry Gordy's restrictions early in his career.

    If Michael Jackson thought he had it bad with a father like Joe Jackson...try having a father like Marvin's father.
    Life lessons: sometimes we need to appreciate what we have because there are people out there who have it worse than you

    • @nathanielsmith6065
      @nathanielsmith6065 4 роки тому +16

      I get what you are trying to say but not where you're trying to go with it. I am not one of those people totally against disciplining your kids physically, but Joe Jackson literally used to beat them for *making mistakes while practicing* on top of the fact that he was emotionally distant as a father overall. These are not things one should "appreciate" just because the next man's father might be worse.

      They both struggled with abusive fathers and it's not a comparison nor a competition. Like one person drowning in 20 feet of water and another drowned in 6 feet of water. They both drown. Marvin and Michael both suffered and it's not up to us who had it worse. Granted, Joe didn't murder Michael (that we know of), but his actions towards him created the circumstances. RIP Marvin and RIP Michael.

    Such an outstanding and superb artist, such a "problematic" personal life..... Anyway a pity that such a talented human being is more than 30 years ago gone.... Mr Gaye, you'll never know how much we miss you

    Marvin was a free spirited , but Marvin was a most exceptional human being. He was a genius and they have complexities unfortunately it really affected him
    but never let his talents ever not be shown to the world and even he suffered he was able to give us all that he had and to mr he will be magnificent Marvin no one else has had the talent he gave to us and lucky we still have his music and what he was trying to get across to people the only thing we never saw him get old ♥️ he had sex appeal. Like no other and didn’t use it was it was the fabric of him.

    Je suis athée, je n'appartiens à aucune religion. Mais j'ai un dieu, Marvin! Chaque fois que je vois son image et que j'entends sa voix, les larmes me montent aux yeux. Et je ne suis vraiment pas du genre à adorer les icônes. L'entendre est une joie et une douleur à la fois. Une sorte de douleur bonifiante. Malgré toutes ces années depuis sa disparition, l'emotion est toujours aussi intense.

I had a zero relationship with him since I was 15(parents divorced) I loved my dad, but never got the same respect from him! As a man and an artist! I know, like Marvin knew, what I'm here for! I have heard this many times in famous families how the father was brutal and how the mother was caring and loving.but here's the thing serious damage was being done to the child/children both physically and mentally Marvin Gaye was a mess for the very same reason.a truly loving mother would get out of the horrific situation yes I know it was hard but the thought that you have to keep in your head as a mother is that your children when young cannot protect themselves.i have been there it took me two years to get my divorce I went from hostel to hostel just so I could protect my child from the demon that I had married so I know how hard and frightening it is and can be.BUT YOU MUST DO IT IF YOU WANT YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN TO STAND A CHANCE AT BEING HAPPY IN LIFE.in my case I never ever got any thanks for looking out for my child but so be it.peace and love 💛

    was troubled with his belief in what the bible taught, so he took it out of all people Marvin jr because he was very much more talented in singing than he was in preaching . The father got jealous because of that
