I just discovered the cinematic feature on mine, but the wind hasn’t been a problem. That said, I was sitting on the beach so there’s only one video where you can hear a bit of wind at all. What really impressed me on the cinematic setting was that absolutely zero of the road noise from the evening commute made it into the video and the road was only 10-15 yards behind me. The second mic you featured sounds more natural, but that’s way out of my budget as a community college professor. Unless you’re full time (4 classes), you’re on food stamps (the bread line, for those in Scotland or Ireland) unless you’re single with no kids.
That’s not a bad idea but there not gonna do it they don’t even know how to add iso shutter speed etc to their stock camera so don’t think they know how to make content accessories but after hearing the soundcore x600 Spatial Audio speaker surprised the don’t. Update the beats pill with usb c and Spatial Audio to appeal to apple and android users
If you think about it, they kinda already do. Ever notice the amount of people who record video with Apple Ear Buds in? This is why. The mics are in the buds.
In many situations I like to hear the wind bashing and whooshing when someone is adventuring or some place exotic. It adds to the scene. The only times I like or expect crystal clear audio is if they're in a studio.
Thanks for mentioning the case issue with the Rode. Far too many mic reviewers fail to point out such problems when in the real world, most people use a case. PS I have a Fulaim X5 wireless mic which offers similar functionality to the DJI while only 1/3 of the price.
yeah..I must keep my 15 pro max in a case...so the Fulaim is a good one? anything more simple...wired is fine...I just don't need a wireless option-thanks
The Saramonic UC Mini is a great option too. I have 2 DJI Mic systems, I have the rode Mic Me and I even have the Rode Wireless Pro system. But that little Saramonic is what I carry with me all the time if I am only taking my phone. It's tiny and works great. You do have to buy the Dead Cat separately, and you will 100% need it, but they make it specifically for it which is nice. It also works with the DJI Action 4 which is a plus. One of the biggest reasons I like it on the DJI A4 is b/c I don't have to remove the door when I want to use it. You do have to swivel it out 45 degrees so it's not in the frame, but it isn't an issue. I would put a link but if I do UA-cam will put my comment in the "held for review" status on your YT studio. So I will put the link in a separate comment.
I’ll take a look at that! I tested the 3.5mm version a couple of years ago and it was good but not as good as either of these. The tiny size is appealing
@@stevestechemporium oh yeah its not near as good of quality as the other two options you showcased, BUT what you lose in quality you make up for in portability.
Hey man... Thank you for this video. I've been looking for the last 12+ months for mics for my iPhone for when I travel to gaming events. This video was SHORT, SWEET and straight to the point and I just purchased the DJI after watching. For concept I never purchase on impulse, when someone promoted a item I truly take my time to research and never end up buying... First time I've been like "wow this dude it legit, he knows the pain of sh*t tech as he does this professionally" Bravo my friend! :)
Thanks for the video. I'm looking for how to connect an SSD drive to my iPhone 15 PRO (for recording PRORES video) as well as an external microphone. Thank you!
I have tried using my phone Bluetooth device with my Android device and it does work and no need to plug any receiver into the phone because it's using the Bluetooth. Another great small device is the BOYA mics for phones that are fantastic quality and signal and very cheap, also you can stick a tiny dead cat over the top mic and cuts out all the wind. Other new option now out is the Hollyland Lark 2, looks great and cheaper than top end mics. cheers
Apple Noise Reduction on MacBook M1 and higher is superb. I think they should also introduce it inside iPhone camera app as well. No matter how much banging happens around you, it will remove all the background noise through AI. Its magical!
AI noise reduction is great I use a plugin all the time. But it can’t fix really bad wind noise as there’s nothing to fix. Using a physical wind shield substantially increases the chances of recoverable audio. I often use both
@@stevestechemporium There's a workaround in post processing. You can use either audition or audacity. Select the area from the waveform which only contains the noise wind and then process the noise. Once done, apply noise reduction to the whole audio clip. It may help you to some extent but again it's not perfect.
Literally heard 5 seconds of the Rode mic and made up my mind! That wind gard is way more appealing than an lav that picks up shirts and still some wind imo.
Thank you for this video! I think the Rode VideoMic Mc-C is exactly what I need! All of my videos have had the terrible wind noise from the internal Mic

Nice comparison. When you use the Rode mic and record video, then playback to preview it with mic still plugged in, does the sound still play through the iPhone speakers? Or do you have to unplug the mic each time? (Does iPhone recognize it’s only a mic and not a headphone / mic combo?)

problem with mic me .. is for vlogging / doc style is you need to record video BOTH in front and behind at same time ... ie capture your voice narrating/commenting on the scene but also capture the audio in front, like people talking or ambient sound of what you are filming
I’ve been using the Rode ME. Works very well for me in a similar situation to yours where I am on a bike with my camera filming others I ride with. Also helps that it is reasonably priced. The only downside is that it doesn’t have internal recording which would have been handy
Great video & yes, in wind, nobody really talks about it. The elephant in the room for me is... I'll want my external SSD connected too & nobody talks about that????
Good point! Personally I use a third party app and shoot high bitrate h.264 in log. It’s been good enough for the majority of my commercial work on my mirrorless cameras. Very few people really need to shoot ProRes Log.
DJI really excel in your test. I do have a question though. Will it capture the surrounding sound? What I meant is that, I would like to capture the ambient sound like cicadas when in nature and the train when in town.
The DJI will be better at this as it’s an omnidirectional mic. If you put it further away from your mouth you will get more environmental audio vs voice

Can you use it if you have a protective case on your iPhone though? That is a problem I had with a Shure mic I bought. I had to file it to clear the case.
Wind noise the bane of any videographer hence the need for some post sound design and sound samples. Only downside I can think off, is the iPhone & many Samsung's record in stereo which can be great on ambient scenes, towns, villages, a car passing right to left etc, both excellent options you show here are mono, is there a recommended stereo mic for smart phones?
not something I've ever really worried about to be honest. I will sometimes animate the direction a sound is coming from during editing if I want it to be off to one side or travel from one side to the other. for example I had a shot where I run from left to right so I started the sound coming from the left speaker and animated it across to the right.
I've used two different Rode VideoMic Me-L (you care using the Rode VideoMic Me-C for iPhone 15 though)with the iPhone 13 Pro and it will stop recording for a split second every 5-10 minutes or so. I contacted Rode and got the software and updated the firmware but same thing. It did work find with iPhone 6 to iPhone 11 Pro.
currently no and to be honest I suspect it might not be possible. Prores is a bit overkill for most of my videos so I'll mostly use a third party app to shoot log video at a high bitrate instead
Is it possible to find a shock mount with a hot shoe and use a cable to connect a Sony camera? Thinking of dual use, USB-C for iPhone and the 3.5mm output jack for Sony camera. But the problem could be the power source :-)
Good vid cheers! Does the receiver for the DJI have a lightning adapter too?? I currently have an iphone with lightning connector but will change later in 2024 when new iphone 16 pro max comes out. So I need to use the wireless mic now on current phone - does that make sense?

Does the microphone record in stereo? I’m looking for one. The ZOOM Am7 stereo mic has the USB connector but it is for Android phones and not the IPhone even though it has a USB. Not many portable options out there.
I need assistance! Whenever I attempt to record a video on my iPhone 15 using a wireless microphone, the resulting video lacks any accompanying audio. I've made every effort to check the settings and ensure my audio input is functioning properly, but I'm feeling quite overwhelmed and uncertain about what to do next.
Hi! I have an iPhone 14 Pro (lightning). Does the lightning version of the Rode mic (Rode ME-L) also work with the iPhone camera app? I recently bought the Rode Lavalier Go but it is not compatible with the iPhone camera app. It works perfectly in lots of other programs (like GarageBand or Voice Memo) - but not with the camera app. The camera app will just use the native iPhone mics, even if the external mic is plugged in. According to Apple support, the iPhone camera app doesn’t support external microphones!

Thinking of dual use, USB-C for iPhone and the 3.5mm output jack for Sony camera. But the problem could be the power source :-)
Indeed, the audio is the most important part of video.
Good vid cheers!
Does the receiver for the DJI have a lightning adapter too??
I currently have an iphone with lightning connector but will change later in 2024 when new iphone 16 pro max comes out.
So I need to use the wireless mic now on current phone - does that make sense?
Yes lightning and USBC
Not sure if there’s a work round but you cannot use the iPhones speakers with the rode plugged in
Excellent explanation 👍👍👍
you are very articulate and sound like a true artist! may your lifeswork be blessed!!! enjoy yourself my kind earthly neighbor. I love you and God loves you too!!! 💙
was super helpful! thanks for it being to the point
Does the microphone record in stereo? I’m looking for one. The ZOOM Am7 stereo mic has the USB connector but it is for Android phones and not the IPhone even though it has a USB. Not many portable options out there.
Thanks hugely much, Steve! Sure ‘n new subscriber here! 🇺🇸💛🇮🇪
Hello, where did you get the windsock from? Thanks
I also scratched my 5-day-old iPhone 15 Pro Max, shooting on top of a granite structure the wind blew it over... Not impressed

You might have to unplug the mic to hear the playback.
can i use it in iphone 14 pro max?
What about the Wireless Pro with iPhone 15?
The iPhone 15 pro doesn’t work with the DJI receiver yet, I have tried and even called DJI and they said they don’t know when it will?
Erm I used it in this video no problem 🤷♂️
Nice blogging sir enjoy and have a good day ❤
was this filmed on iphone?
I have the Rode Me-L and it drops out when used with the iPhone camera app and voice memos. Not often, but enough to p--- me off.
OMG… this is probably the problem I’m having trying get the external microphone to work.
What is the distance you can you use the mic of the person using it away from the phone?
The wireless mic? About 100ft
