Thanks! You have a fantastic ear Marty! I could listen/watch you all day man! I don’t even play guitar but you make me want to pick it up! 👍🙏 And you nail the essence of Eddie: emotion. Nothing is every exactly the same musically but it is emotionally!
I saw a live video of EVH playing this & he actualy plays the scraping behind the pickup right next to the bridge. It's on YT if you ever want to search it up
Here’s a quick little tip for the intro riff; watch closely and live Eddie muted the string right at the bridge with his pinky, he didn’t palm mute. It gave the riff a more open sound without the note really ringing out too much. And yes, he uses the edge of the pick like you say here.
Great break down. Really liked the the lead explanation about mood and feeling. Reminded me of Robin Trower when he said he never tried to figure out what other players were playing, he was more interested in what they were feeling or trying to express when they played it. 👍
This song, maybe more than other songs on Balance, has a million ways to be played on the neck. Ed moved his chord shapes around a lot, I think to accommodate Sam's voice. This song has some monstrously high notes, and where Sammy is on any given day probably drove the band to choose their chord voicings....
I’ve been jamming to this song for ten years, and YES, some of those notes are just ridiculous… I’ll be listening to it for the thousandth time, and I’ll hear one of those high notes and just randomly go, “SHIT that’s fucking high.”
Hi, thank you for your awesome guitar class. Would you mind to consider in a future, to teach how to configure the pedals, what kind of effects the songs use? Thanks in advance.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker I actually just watched a show on TV called “Van Halen:The Story of their Songs”,and Sammy stated he wrote that song about Kurt Kobain and his suicide…..Sammy gotta throw “Love”in there somewhere, but this one has a negative connotation…..”Don’ Tell me what Love can do….I don’t wanna hear it”,I thought it was interesting….I had no idea until I saw that show…
Thanks a lot for the lesson, Marty. You helped me to finally tackle this song.. tabs online are way to complicated and probably not accurate. So : THANK YOU!!!
I really appreciate these lessons. It would be helpful if you included some comments about basic tone/effects settings you used to get in the ballpark. Thank you!
This is a really easy & fun song to play n sing. Easiest VH song ever? I thoughts "running w/ the devil" was but this seems just a simple, but with a little more nuances.... I dig it!
Thanks for the video. Just had to put one of my dogs to sleep and still trying to figure out what's left and what's right. This song was never on my radar until you just did this vid. Thanks. Tim and I are still on pickups, just moving a little slow right now.
Sorry to hear about your dog. My 11year old pit mix has been getting acid reflux for 9 months and is taking it's toll on her. Our dogs are family and it hurts to see them suffer.
I have not YET! I almost did that instead of Don't Tell me. I will do it very soon... promise. I love that song too. I kinda catered to the "heavier side" for today. 😎🙌
Great lesson thankx Marty!! I love that song!! I know it maybe sounds weird but i always feel like there are two playing styles for Eddie. Forst up to 1984 and with 5150 he started to shift his style more loose not that „Classic Hard Rock“ riffs, more experimental and „modern“ to that time? Maybe you get it 😅
I agree. As he got older her kept experimenting but got bluesier and really slippery and chromatic. His bends and note selection were really wild. Almost like simple blues licks were there, but his voice and style twisted then around so unusual. Not sure that makes sense lol.
I use a Fractal AX8 with a Freidman BE patch. I am also using Friedman cabinet impulse responses in stereo. My delay and Reverb is run post through ProTools. This is a 1995 Van Halen EBMM. 😎
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker , thank you so much for the response! I have an ax8 and would love any more info! You have given me something to experiment with on my ax8 now! Much appreciated!!
This was the time around where things began not working well for the VH camp. Sammy's divorce, Eddie's battle being sober and a few relapses, the fight over money issues with Cabo Wabo, their manager died, Eddie taking control of everything which starts to piss off Sam, etc. Thanks for the lesson man. I learned this from the GW Eddie issue talking about Balance and there was a tab included. But your lesson cleared some things that sounds good by ear based from the record.
Definitely was a troubled era for the band. They still managed to crank out a really professional album. Too bad life's twists and challenges had to take its toll so heavily for the band. Thanks for watching man! 😎🎵🎵☮️

Forgot to say at the beginning that this song is referencing what happened to Kurt Cobain, Sammy Hagar said he wanted the song by the end to say "I wanna hear what love can do" because he thought love could have saved Cobain but the Van Halen brothers didn't want so he had to sing "Don't wanna hear what love can do". When you realize that that part when he says "I see the damage done, oh no I heard the SHOTGUN" it gets really powerful because you can imagine what he was singing about. By watching the clip you get the idea that this song is about someone that made a bad choice, maybe a robbery, or took some risk, but once you know this it gets a whole new meaning, is about choosing or not to end his life.
I use a Fractal AX8 with a Freidman BE patch. I am also using Friedman cabinet impulse responses in stereo. My delay in Reverb is run in post through ProTools.
