Another scam to be aware of is men in the area who asked you if you would like to come to their home and see what a traditional home looks like inside , I took the offer from a man who took me to the most filthiest home I have ever seen with clothes lying all over the floor , it was like a dungeon with no windows and he had a very savage dog inside his home that was barking at me , he gave me a cup of tea and wanted to sell all kinds of things which I didn't need , I was glad to get out of the home and he said '' could I buy him some milk '' he took me to shop I gave the shopkeeper the money for the milk and the scammer kept the change . He asked me to come back and stay over night and I declined as I feared for my safety .

As a Moroccan, it makes my blood boil when I see these scammers intimidating tourists into paying crazy prices! I would like to see the Moroccan authorities act to impose heavy fines on all these crooks who give a bad image to my country! Edit Kurt why in hell are you folowing strangers by now you should know better?
As a Moroccan fan of yours for over a year, I appreciate your videos and exploring my country this time. The snake charmers were greedy, and you figured that out by yourself, the amount of money you gave them was more than enough. Even us Moroccans we avoid them, they'd say give whatever you want, then they'd ask for more. A tip of advice, you should have spare change with you in coins, so they won't be greedy when they see cash. As for the Jellaba price, it was reasonable. Try to bargain wherever you go, that's the culture. They're not intimidating as much as being pushy. Also, after you bargain, if they don't succumb to your offer, you can just leave the store, and they'll call you back. Never ride a bike for whatever reason man, don't expect generosity in a touristy place. You won't expect any Moroccan generousity whatsoever, that guy is a fucking jerk.
Love how you expose the scams so whoever goes there knows what's up ahead of time. I'm glad you actually allow a bit of it to happen so we can grasp exactly what is going on.
Those two incense scammers are really disgusting. The way they tried to convince him to pay an absurd price is just mind blowing. I’am a moroccan and when i go to this place i try as much as possible to avoid any interraction with vendors there as they think i’am a tourist and try to charge me more. You paid a lot for what you got kurt even for the snakes charmers

Kurt speaking fluent in Arabic is hilarious! His accent is ON POINT 👌 Like the tone of the letter 7 (soft H in European) and the letter 3 (Deep H is European) is really excellent.
Hi Kurt go to the Berber area of Morocco, people are completely different. Noone will scam you, they will even invite you for dinner. I'm Italian I've been to Morocco last summer from north to south and there is a huge difference
No. They scam as well, especially in the desert. Just came back from Merzouga and the amazighs were professional scammers. There is scamming everywhere, you just have to be confident and know your price. Don’t settle for less.
The berbers are friendly, pick them up and give them a lift on way to atlas mountains, done it twice now and been in their homes in asni having morrocan tea with them
I'm berber and that's true our culture is different we're very chill and respectful and welcoming and traditional. People from the cities dont know what's that like. When you're cut from your roots from nature there is something lacking.
a TIP for you Kurt, as a Moroccan who lives in Marrakech. For the snakes and Monkeys thing, 10 Dh, 20 Dh is enough. If you wanna give them more, 50 DH is way more than enough. They'll keep asking you to give more no matter how much you give them. They just aim at taking the maximum. So just give them 20Dh and say : Lah'yesser or Lah'yaawen. and go away. Same goes for the other Shows in the Jama'a Lefna Place. If you wanna see more Shows, just have change with you. 10Dhs, 5 Dhs. For the Shows in the evening, there is usually a "people circle" around the performers, and when they finish the show they'll go around collecting whatever people give them, so giving them 5dh 10 Dhs 20Dh, it's enough. Be more aware of the people who actually give you a service (food, tattoo, something you consume) If you want anything, ask for the price before hand, because if you take the service first, they might ask for an absurd price, and no matter how much you haggle you'd still waste a lot. So haggle the price first (of course if they already have price tags you shouldn't haggle, like Restaurant Menus for example.) Many people for example go get the Henna tattoo in Jama'a Lefna, and they don't ask for the price first, so they end up paying 500DHs for a simple flower tattoo in only one hand. When they could pay 100DHs for both hands (for simple tattoos, not complicated ones) in traditional markets, always haggle. That's just the way it is. You might also encounter a straight up scam in some restaurants that sell sea food (This one even Moroccans fall for it sometimes) so in traditional sea food restaurants, they have plates by size. So you might order a 50 DH plate, and they'll bring you with it some langoustine or some expensive fish, and when you go to pay, They'll tell you 50Dh for the dish you ordered and 100DH for the expensive fish. They are creative with how they'll upsale the extra dish so be careful. They might even just give you the expensive dish without saying anything. So make sure they give you what you ordered only. (the side dishes like the sauce and olives etc.. are not a scam though, they just come with your order) Of course most restaurants don't do this scam, but some of them do, so just keep it in mind. I hope you have a nice visit. And try visiting Dakhla city, it has some insane beaches.
You're welcome. There is so much more information and details to give TBH, and literally every city has its own culture, and you kind of need to adapt for each one. But overall, as long as you know the price before hand, you're good. I just want to add that Kurt in the next video (Marrakech part 2) did just what I warned about 😅 He went to a Barbershop and he payed at least 10X the normal price. Instead of 20DH to 40DH max, He paid 400 DHs, which is insane. Although to be fair, it was actually Kurt who proposed that price, The barber doesn't know English and simply said "Four", and Kurt thought it was 400 and he paid it. The barber probably wanted to say 40 DHs not 400.
Kurt allows himself to get “humbly” scanned for the camera (he has 2.54 MILLION people behind that camera)... He is showing us the TRUE nature of people, when they are talking one-one, people who have to come-up with a way of surviving and walking that fine balance between right and wrong…Kurt is simply allowing the person TO CHOOSE 🔮 the way he will BE seen by millions: family, locals, government and a lifetime of tourists.🤳
I kinda get the local tourist price tbh because id probably do the same place a small cherry on top of the local one ,, but there is a fine line between taking the pi55 out from tourist, and being able treat urself and or family to an unexpected bonus
18:58 … you KNOW you’re getting ripped off when they say “good price for you…” and then give you a whole explanation as to why it’s a good price BEFORE they even tell you the price
Something similar happened to me also in Marrakesh and with the skins, although I was walked (for easily 5 mins) instead. I had no idea they wanted to show me skins. When I told them I was not interested at all, they got somehow aggressive with me, but I left without paying them anything. It is funny, I had seen videos of yours years ago, about Egypt. Shortly after i went there and your videos (and some from others, and also my personal experience in Marrakesh) helped me a lot to be ready to avoid scams (so thank you so much). I am a bit surprised that after all your experience you are still going through these scam experiences again (although at least you are negotiating somehow the prices).
As a Moroccan i've been to Marrakesh several times cuz I got family there and even as a Moroccan I don't get recognize as a Moroccan especially if i'm on my bike ppl think i'm a foreigner so I got y'all an easy way to get yourselves out of scammers. First of All the scammers cannot harm you physically so there is literally nothing u could lose so when someone puts a show for u even if u don't ask for it you should just tell urself if that was an experience u would never have had or did u enjoy it or ... if nothing meets your taste just ignore em and go by your day if u enjoyed or liked the experience presented tip the amount you feel is ratio'd to your satisfaction not to theirs and if they don't like that amount what I do is take the money back and leave. Y'all are welcome in our country but don't follow what people tell you out of the blue, do what you think is right.
They in fact can harm you and if you dont pay they will act like they will harm you. Man I rode my bicycle through Morocco and wild camped for two weeks a couple years ago and it was incredible. People are incredibly friendly, hospitable, and nice. And the landscape is beautiful. But Marrakesh is not for me. When I landed in Marrakesh I had to GTFO pretty much ASAP. It's nuts. So many people think think you're a money shitting machine. And you never know if the friendliness is genuine or they want to sell you something. The worst is when they try to guilt you into paying for something without prior agreement. Work up a tan, get yourself a turban, and head to the Atlas mountains. It's incredible. The nomads are super nice and even invited me to a wedding. Also, the "potion" you bought is an incense. You have to burn it.
Marakesh is overhyped by the state, don't get me wrong it's a beautiful city that really deserves a visit but it such a tourist hotspot like Paris or Venice. Worth a visit but definitely overcrowded and too many 'attractions'.. Better visit Casablanca, Fes, Al Houcaima or Agadir.
I am Moroccan, and I can assure you that I personally steer clear of those places and avoid those individuals. There is so much more to explore in Marrakech! I recommend visiting the Agafay Desert, do some activities there, then exploring Jardin Majorelle where Yves Saint Laurent established his museum, enjoying lunch at Palais Namaskar (a luxurious spot), and having dinner at Malak Emeraude. However, For the best experience with a tight budget as a foreign tourist, I suggest visiting Taghazout 100%

There's a lot of guys that also shout to tourists saying "this road is closed now, people are praying, you can't go that way, come with me" and then insistently ask for money. I fell for it once, but second time I managed to help other italian tourists telling them not to go.
I'm a Moroccan living in Belgium and I can tell you that those scammers are also scamming me. Morocco has a big problem with pushy beggars and scammers. Morocco is a beautiful country but these practices always make me ashamed to visit my homeland with my non-Moroccan friends.
I am half moroccan living in europe, when i was 15 years old visiting my fathers home country morocco he sent me to the store to buy some food/drinks. When i came back to the car my father checked the change and became furious since i had been scammed. My father went back to the store and told them off very angry and said that ”is this how you treat people visiting the country, you think this is a good image of us ?!” The son of the owner apologized and we got the correct change back. I love Morocco and will always visit but it is unfortunate that some people still acts this way.
You should be ashamed how Moroccans act in Europe. In some neighborhoods they act like this and worse even steel from you. It happened to me several times.
Was in Marrakesh in the summer. Amazing city and Morocco is a beautiful country but my god man just watching you letting them put the animals on you stressed me out, knowing they would try scam you with mad prices. Good of you to show that you need to hold your own with them they can be pretty pushy
Very odd ethical framework. These savages enslave snakes, horses, monkeys, etc. and your only objection is they charged Kurt too much for exploiting the slaves?
The guy that tried to give you the tour at the leather market turned around to come back and get in on the scam. You passed him once you started making the last turns just before arriving at the leather factory. I love to see you refuse to be scammed.
I've been to Marrakech this year and in a few days i've had discussions for unnecessary tips or super high turistic fares with a couple of locals, beggars, monkey man, taxi driver and even the man selling the tickets for a national palace (he wouldn't give me the change back). Those who didn't ask for money were the ones that deserved it the most.

Hey fam , let me tell you something as a moroccan, marakesh is very known of this kind of scams in touristic areas and that goes with every other country, you will get scammed anywhere in the world unless if you didn’t want to , it does take much to educate yourself about a place or to read and watch other people experience so you go with good knowledge about the place and know how to profit and enjoy your trip to the max , for Morocco i recommend the north part of Morocco “ Tetouan “ Chefchouauen “ “ Tangier “ they are way nicer with nicer people and try to explore and enjoy by urself dont seek guides and kids things that how they make theit money by charging tourists extra for nothing
Seems way to tiring to visit places like these where you have a continious feeling of getting scammed and having to discuss each price. Too bad because it may be a beautiful place but they don’t care about giving tourists a safe feeling
This applies everywhere it’s not a specific country problem it’s a tourist reality. In some places they have separate menu for tourist per example. I’ve traveled enough to realize that it’s blessing and curse. You have to be careful and wise enough to do your research and prepare yourself for anything.
@burgerkang3249If you visited theses cities and you had a good experience good for you. Everyone has a different experience that’s what it’s supposed to be everywhere. But I have to disagree with you and I think you are very naive to believe vendors ( scammers ) are not doing shady business overall in any city. I’ve been to Morocco so many times and this never happened to me.
Hey Kurt, I'm originally from Morocco. You can get those Jellaba's actually for 100Dirham , in smaller village"s or in cities even for 50Dirham's bro. 😂
I've been to 40 countries and my personal experience in Morocco was the worst I've ever had. The sad part is that I was looking forward to Morocco more than most of the places I've been to. The men in Fez and Marrakech were so full of shit that it became a very hostile experience. Every day I walked in the medinas there, many locals tried to play me and my gf for a fool. They'd say "the road/restaurant is closed let me walk you to the right place" and it was all lies. As an obvious foreigner I was a walking ATM advertisement...everyone wants your dollars and euros. Sometimes the older shopkeepers would start chatting and they'd know the area where I was from by naming nearby cities where their "friends lived" and it was a nice conversation...they'd ask you to have tea with them and we would say we would love to talk but don't want to buy anything...then they'd say no problem just want to chat...and of course after 10 minutes they would try to sell some carpets or something else lol. A very prolonged sales pitch under the guise of a friendly conversation. Western women get stared at or sexually harassed constantly even in the company of men. I almost got into several fights as s result. Fez was the toilet of Morocco for us. Awful people there. Even an official government "tour guide" just took you to places where he clearly got a commission of any crap we would have bought. His demeanor clearly changed each time we left a store without buying anything. We learned nothing of history or culture on the tour but we learned that the rug store can ship the rugs to anywhere in the world!
I've been to 46 countries, and Marrakesh was my least favorite city by far. I'm well-seasoned in all the scamming bullshit all across the world, but I couldn't believe how incessant it was in Morocco. I gave them zero attention, and they still harassed me everywhere I went. Edit: I should point out that I was there during Covid, and they cut off all incoming flights a few days after I arrived, rendering me one of the only tourists in the entire country. That probably contributed to the harassment being 10x worse than usual.
That’s one of the reasons why i always tell people Morocco is not just Marrakesh, if you haven’t been to the north and the west which is very different people are calmer and less scammers then you would have another image of Morocco
Well at least Kurt didn't get scammed on the large fresh pomegranate juice for $2. I asked my local cafe in suburban Sydney Australia if they could make me a pomegranate juice and I was told each pomegranate costs $5 and it would take 4 to make a glass. Now THAT'S a scam!!😳
Well, it is cultivated locally in Northern Africa while your australian pomegranate was probably shipped from India or Chile so of course it's going to cost you an arm.

@@Amurjojo I didn't have so much fun in Morocco, as a white European guy, the men there just saw me as walking wallet, and not much else, especially on the square in Marrakech. In other countries at least they were genuinly nice to me. I even tried to make a friend in Morocco, he was nice, but when I was back in my home country, he asked me to start a business with me. I refused, and he then deleted me as friend on social media. It doesn't matter if I have money or not, getting treated like that would annoy me anyway. I have travelled to Marrakech, Fez, some places on the beach and the desert. I only liked Chefchaouen, and the remote cities in the desert, I met a few genuinly nice people there atleast, but it wasn't easy.
I was in Marrakesh in February, one guy from Casablanca started talking to me while watching some people dance some traditional Moroccan music, it was my first decent conversation with a local, not a guy trying to sell me something. When I tried to leave, he was charging me 20€ because he started to explain me something that I didn't ask about, a 5 minute chat, then he got angry because I didn't want to pay him, still, I gave him 5€, he felt offended and left angry. Man, they really insist, even with a normal chat with a "normal everyday citizen", which of course he was not. What a shame, he was actually a nice bloke, he was not interested to have a normal and decent chat, it was all about money.
I highly doubt this guy was really from Casablanca. He might have claimed so to dissociate himself from the other scammers and gain your trust. So sad to hear those kind of stories of my country though.

You are obviously a little older than me. You must have some amazing stories from the 60s and 70s.
I got trapped in the exact tannery tour scam and didn't see it coming. It ended with two guys wanting more money and being threatening while there was no one else around. I loved traveling Morocco for over a month but will be fine to never return to Marrakech.
Morocco is an excellent country, explore the wonderful places of Marrakech and Morocco. Explore history and architecture. Everywhere you go, especially touristy countries, tourist prices are always different than local prices. Also there are no bad stories about Marrakech, you mentioned it yourself, some rare people make rumors which you should not encourage spreading as well.
I really was excited for this video bc I’m Moroccan but man the prices were just too much, I got angry in your place. I think you should have picked a guide or someone from the place, believe there is so much to do in Morocco and dangerous places. It sucks
Well he never picks a local guide to help him with getting scammed.. he either gets scammed and let it go, or he keeps haggling with the vendor until he wins.

Racist because berbers are white? What are you trying to say
@@corn2214 Dont comment if you know nothing please
a TIP for you Kurt, as a Moroccan who lives in Marrakech.
So haggle the price first (of course if they already have price tags you shouldn't haggle, like Restaurant Menus for example.)
Many people for example go get the Henna tattoo in Jama'a Lefna, and they don't ask for the price first, so they end up paying 500DHs for a simple flower tattoo in only one hand. When they could pay 100DHs for both hands (for simple tattoos, not complicated ones)
in traditional markets, always haggle.
(the side dishes like the sauce and olives etc.. are not a scam though, they just come with your order)
Of course most restaurants don't do this scam, but some of them do, so just keep it in mind.

Edit: I should point out that I was there during Covid, and they cut off all incoming flights a few days after I arrived, rendering me one of the only tourists in the entire country. That probably contributed to the harassment being 10x worse than usual.
That makes a lot of sense. Nevertheless good you didn't give in to their scams!
That’s one of the reasons why i always tell people Morocco is not just Marrakesh, if you haven’t been to the north and the west which is very different people are calmer and less scammers then you would have another image of Morocco
Must have been a fking nightmare stuck like that 😮
We gonna miss you
As a moroccan better stay away from morocco. People have become scammers
Australia is a relatively wealthy nation, so $2 might not seem much to you, but he did charge Kurt double the local price. Just saying.
Well, it is cultivated locally in Northern Africa while your australian pomegranate was probably shipped from India or Chile so of course it's going to cost you an arm.
Totally!
@@FlyingNachono I'm morrocan living there and it's really cost 2$ for juice medium cup in that place even for locals
@@karljohan3989you don’t know anything about Australian produce. It is far more likely you crap you buy is grown here in Australia and shipped to you.

Go to Berber area of Morocco and people are completely different. Noone will scam you, most likely they will invite you for dinner even
I was in Marrakesh two weeks ago. The majority of the vendors were nice and not that pushy. Sure they try to get a high price but you just gotta be confident and pick your own price of course. In any case I recommend going there! Very interesting city and region
And that my friend is why you live a blinkered life.

By far the worst country I've ever seen. The journey from Casablanca Airport to our hotel there on night 1 and we wanted to go back home straight away.
Everybody in Morocco knows that Marrakesh is the city where you have to be more careful about "scams" and "tourist traps". In the majority of Morocco, people are very nice and calm, cities like Agadir, Tiznit, Essaouira etc. you can see the best of Morocco.

I visited Marrakech with my wife a few years ago and locals tried to scam us every single second. You just walk around and they insist to take you somewhere or show you something special or whatever and then they ask money for nothing... We felt very uncomfortable so we never will recommend to go to this place.
Great video as always, man!
Yeah.. I travelled many countries but Morocco was just annoying me

You juge one case of 1M of beautiful things of this happy country the peoples had an other opinions that are positive.
So sad to hear those kind of stories of my country though.
welcome to africa .... they think you are an Un food truck lol

Hi Kurt, I am from Morocco and I have watched a lot of videos I was expecting you to come to Morocco, welcome, but it seems that it is not a good start😂I wish you the best in the upcoming videos. The most important thing is to keep negative energy away from you, because you always say that you will be exposed to scammers, and this is what always happens to you. 😅
The way they just look at you and make stuff up and tell you what you wanna hear is so comical 😂
Kurt you're very good at pronouncing the lettre ع when you say Salam aalikom
Unexpectedly, niceee, thanks for the upload Kurt, Big fan 😀
Its pretty simple to figure out these places, tell anyone that approaches you that you're not interested repeatedly as you walk away' or say nothing and ignore them, shake you head and say no repeatedly, go to a variety of stalls and get the prices first and buy nothing, dont reward annoying pushy scammy people. How tourists are dumb enough to not even know this is beyond me. Reward good behaviour, punish bad behaviour
31:49 “finish this men” got me😂
Hi Kurt, I am from Marrakesh lived there 15 years, I now live in Ottawa, I can tell you that Marrakesh especially it’s old medina is filled with scams, even for us Moroccans not only just tourists, I would recommend seeing other parts of Marrakesh, and if you can leave the city a bit, go to the berber mountais, the people there, the landscape, it’s ridiculous, if there is anything specific you wanna know about, let me know, i’ll be glad to help!

Just research before you go! Marrakech was just a bit to crazy for me I wouldn't go again but I'm glad I went.
Wow! 1972! Now that must have been an interesting trip for sure. The Vietnam War was not over yet when you took that trip. Back then I'm sure you had sent a lot postcards home or to friends. When I was a kid I always liked postcards. It's like an Instagram post of today but with the added authenticity of the personal message written by the sender. There's a certain feeling you get from holding it knowing it was held by whoever sent it to you. I'm 58. I used to write letters home when I was in the US Army back in the mid 80s.

It sucks
