30:00 is the first Elevator in Brasil The Lacerda Elevator (Elevador Lacerda) is a public urban elevator located in Salvador, Brazil, connecting the lower city (Cidade Baixa) to the upper city (Cidade Alta).[1] The 72 metres (236 ft) elevator was built between 1869 and 1873; it was named after Antônio de Lacerda, director of the Commercial Association of Bahia.[2][3] It was a hydraulic elevator at first; later operating by electricity since 1906. The elevator towers were renovated in 1930, in an Art Deco styling. The Lacerda Elevator has two towers, one that pierces the stone slope of the Ladeira da Montanha, and the other, more visible, goes to the Cidade Baixa level. The elevator has four lifts, carrying 27 passengers each on a 30-second ride costing 0.15 reais. In 2019 it transported more than 33,000 passengers per day.[4]

Kurt, a tip about the "farofa": Farofa is generally made out of cassava flour and by itself it's pretty dry, but when you combine it with some meat or rice and beans in your fork, it gives a good balance. Also, there are "egg farofas", sausage farofas and just "pure" farofa with no eggs or anything else. The GOOD ones will have something more in them, like eggs or sausages. If you eat it again, try to eat it in a BBQ. Shove the meat in the farofa and then eat it, I think it will taste much better xD
you're very kind for explaining but this guy doesn't care and would rather eat his ultra-processed americanized unhealthy trash fast food off-camera so it doesn't run his street cred. I agree 100% with respecting a homeless person wanting food or drink instead of money. I’m not afraid to admit I don’t ever give money to people begging on the streets but I would help someone who asked for food or a drink. Whether those bracelets are a scam or not I would highly suggest to any person out touristing to never accept a “gift” or free picture or anything on the streets from anyone no matter where you visit in the world. It’s a popular scam in Vegas, NY an I’ve even heard in Paris too with the people working on the streets. Whether it’s a magician or a guy dressed in a costume do not accept anything for free. I wouldn’t recommend you stop to watch them, talk to them or take anything they are offering. If they aren’t trying to scam you then you have to always be aware of pick pocket thieves working with them. And remember nobody is out on the street working for free. They are getting something out of standing on the sidewalk doing magic or dressing in a costume.
Don’t even look them in the eye. I walk straight past these people and don’t give them a second of my time. Having lived in Johannesburg I learnt that there. Giving homeless people food is ok if you are coming out of a place with food for them without them even asking, but I never engage with anyone homeless otherwise. Each to their own though.
I gave a homeless guy a full pizza once and he threw it on the ground and said where's the dip? I then came out of a restaurant with 40 wings and NOT ONE homeless guy wanted them, just wanted money. Tried about 20 people right outside the doors. No takers. Another had handcuffed himself to my gf when she was with her mom. It goes on and on.

This hurts. Salvador is where my father is from. Fond memories but reality is it’s 10x dangerous since the 90s when I would visit. It’s a major source of brazilian culture, unvarnished. It’s also Official sister city with New Orleans Louisiana, my home city. Slaves were brought either to Salvador or New Orleans and the food, African influence and culture they brought to these cities created a unique mixture not found elsewhere. I enjoy your videos immensely. Hope you visited the Mercado modelo and tried a Prato da Bahia original

It's nice to get the idea of what's the standard in the country and city you're in. You should start doing it again. How much was that haircut for example?
That’s Brazil brother. They will sell you things EVERYWHERE. I was walking down a random street in São Paulo and a dude tried selling me socks. Lmao. Always hustling something. My favorite is when I was on the beach and the guy was screaming out “QUIEJO! QUIEJO!” He had a tiny fire grill he was carrying with grilling cheese, or quiejo coalho. It’s pretty good.
At 52:40 the guy charges 50 reais (10-12 US dollars) for the moto-taxi. What a rip off! I don’t know if it’s because it’s an island and everything is more expensive. But I found this to be too expensive. This is what I hate about my country Brazil. There are many people ripping off tourists.
Was there just a few months ago and actually had to think about you! Everyone was always like "don't walk by yourself, it's dangerous!". Every single taxi driver, shop owner, policeman etc. would say the same. We (me and my Brazilian gf) walked around everywhere by foot and there wasn't ever any trouble or sketchy situations. But the fact that everyone was always warning us, made the whole experience kinda tense. Enjoyed it a lot more in other places in Bahia. I'm about to start the video - so I'm excited what your experience was/is! Edit #1: I was laughing out loud when you tried Acaraje. Completely agree - one of the worst looking and tasting things I ever tried haha.

@@bengaliinplatforms1268 You have a point. Yet a lot of the "don't go there, it's dangerous" comes from a place of fear through stories they heard, or things that perhaps happened to them once or twice. And fear is a pretty strong emotion and often one that makes us pretty irrational. If I'd succumb to all fears that people have and share with me, I'd be missing out a lot on life. However, if something did happen, I'd surely feel pretty stupid ;) Yet I have never had anything happen to me in the 50+ countries I have travelled to and partially cycled through. Like that one local said, you are like a modern day national geographic camera man. I love it because thats how i feel when watching your videos. So much bravery to post this documentary about a place where few would dare travel.

30:00 is the first Elevator in Brasil
The Lacerda Elevator (Elevador Lacerda) is a public urban elevator located in Salvador, Brazil, connecting the lower city (Cidade Baixa) to the upper city (Cidade Alta).[1] The 72 metres (236 ft) elevator was built between 1869 and 1873; it was named after Antônio de Lacerda, director of the Commercial Association of Bahia.[2][3] It was a hydraulic elevator at first; later operating by electricity since 1906. In 2019 it transported more than 33,000 passengers per day.[4]
Kurt showed little respect in this video. I watch all his videos, but when he finally goes to my city he doesn't even bother to read a thing or two about the place he's in. And we're talking about Salvador, the culture capital of brazil. Sad to watch this.
@@pisquilah He needed to take a guide, but it's not his thing on this channel.

This was like a classic Kurt video! Keep feeding the streets bro!
What an experience, and what an ending man.
You finishing off the modt brazilian way possible, just spontaneously joining a football game with the kids fucking class act man.

Good to see you back in South America doing your thing, you're the man!!
But honestly, I admire the fact the taxi driver took you form Pelourinho to Engenho Velho da Federação and you seemed so chill
Fantastic video, fantastic adventure. Thanks!
But I appreciate your interesting reply, I hope when i go to Brazil I get to meet detailed and helpful people like you ✌

This man has made it his job to travel the world and supposedly "explore" local culture. And he can't even be bothered to research the local staple foods and how to eat them, and then starts complaining. Why would you think he cares? He's a mean, exploitative person and if it suited him, he'd treat you with the same disrespect with which he treats the people from the countries he visits. @@stianjohansen7555
I'm glad to see Kurt has started getting sponsored by AG¹ and others because he deserves it! You're a legend, Kurt! I love watching your videos of your travels!
Exatamente!.. concordo com você 👍
This scam involves a mother with a child on her lap (sometimes a teenager carrying a baby) asking tourists to buy diapers or powdered milk for her as opposed to donating money. The scammer indicates the place where they can buy the necessities, but in fact, there is an agreement between the shopkeeper and the scammer whereby an amount is given to the beggar after the tourist walks away. This scam is widespread in Ipanema, Leblon, and Copacabana. Sadly, in some cases, babies are even “rented” for this crime.
@@BLITZKRIEG1 It doesn't matter, they are getting 4 bucks from this "scam". People do what they have to do in order to survive. Life is tough.

Thank you for this interesting info

Just one remark - in your older videos you used to give us the price of everything - street food, haircuts, beers - everything.

Yeah the grilled cheese on the beach is good
At 52:40 the guy charges 50 reais (10-12 US dollars) for the moto-taxi.
What a rip off! I don’t know if it’s because it’s an island and everything is more expensive. But I found this to be too expensive.
This is what I hate about my country Brazil. There are many people ripping off tourists.
From what I can tell on Google Maps it was at least a 14 km drive from Veracruz to that fortress, so not just a little hop.
Come to Recife, Pernambuco Kurt, you will be welcome in here👊🏻🇧🇷
Was there just a few months ago and actually had to think about you!

Add the combined experience of every local that gave you a tip of seeing Crime and violence, put that against the couple
of days you spend their, and have a think about who knows what they are talking about
@@bengaliinplatforms1268 You have a point.
But at home (Austria & Poland) I got mugged and beat up multiple times. I guess bad things will always happen if you spend a long time there.
